We are so excited to have you join Susan G. Komen Charlotte as a 2016 Race for the Cure team captain. Starting a team is a great way to honor or celebrate a survivor, remember those who have lost their fight and to help make a difference in our community. As a captain, you act as the team cheerleader to help recruit members, promote fundraising, set goals and motivate the group. Charlotte’s Race for the Cure is a major fundraising event and a true celebration of hope and survival—as well as a lot of FUN! Before we get to the event details, here are a few quick facts about Race day we want to share: • The event will start October 1, 2016 at 6:00am, Marshall Park in Uptown Charlotte. • Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure is a 5k (3.1 miles). There is also a 1 mile route you may choose to walk

or run either route. • Register at www.komencharlotte.org. • Follow us on Facebook! www.facebook.com/komencharlotte• We love animals - but not at the Race. For safety, please leave your pets at home. • Strollers are permitted. • Your registration fee helps defray costs of producing the Race and is not considered tax-deductible. Any

amount that you choose to donate above the registration fee is tax-deductible. • The registration fee covers a Race bib, exclusive Race for the Cure t-shirt, and activity map.

A team can be any size, but we encourage teams to have 10 or more participants. Teams register under a common team name and commit to raising funds, helping to end breast cancer forever. Any company, family, group of friends, club, community organization, school or faith group can form a team. Registration for Race for the Cure on site at Marshall Park is $40.

MONITOR YOUR TEAM’S PROGRESS

How to Start a Team

After you set up your team page online, you can update your page with photos, stories, then e-mail your friends and family to ask for their support. You can even track donor information and view fundraising progress!

Packets include important information such as race maps, shirts, bibs (paper race number), and other necessities. Team packets can be picked up before the race on Race day, but we strongly suggest you pick up your team’s packets beforehand. The team captain or another team representative can pick up team packets. Visit our Race page under the Race Day Information tab to view schedule.

Funds raised by teams and individuals through Race for the Cure allow Komen Charlotte to give back to our community and help find the cures for breast cancer. That’s why we need your team to raise as much money as you can! Team captains are the number one reason why members fundraise. Consider asking your friends, family and co-workers for $20 donations in honor of our 20th Race for the Cure!

Once you’ve created a team, recruit members to join! All team members must be registered by midnight on September 29th. Register at www.komencharlotte.org.

Start your team by registering online or sending in printed forms to the Komen Charlotte office. We highly encourage online registration! Even if your team members register with paper forms, you must create your team online. Visit www.komencharlotte.org, click “Register” under the Race for the Cure tab. Returning team captains must create a team for the current year. If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected]. Also visit our Facebook page or join the Komen Charlotte Race For the Cure Team Captains Facebook page for updates during Race season.

Events are always more fun with friends and family! Teams come in all shapes and sizes, and we want to help you reach your team goal. Now that you’ve started a team, let’s grow it! Check out ways to fundraise on the next page.

How to Grow Your Team

Build Your Contacts! Once you set up your participant center, which houses your individual and team fundraising pages, you will have access to customized e-mail templates asking folks to join you.

Get Social! Let your friends know you have a Race for the Cure team and invite them to join you on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Create a Team Page! Strengthen unity among your team by creating a Facebook page! Once other friends see how much fun you all have together, they’ll surely want to join!

Schedule an Education Opportunity! Have a group interested in learning more about Susan G. Komen or Race for the Cure? Let us know! Our staff is available to present to your group and answer questions.

Follow these simple steps to grow your team and fundraise!

Just ask! Make a list of your social circles—friends, family, co-workers, schoolmates, religious group affiliates, running groups, neighbors, etc, and invite them to join you! Send e-mails, write a hand written letter or call your contacts to ask them to join you for Race for the Cure.

Fundraising TipsUse your personal fundraising page. Once you’re registered, you will have access to a participant center with tools to help you fundraise. Set up your own web page and customize with videos, photos and your personal story. Then email the link to friends and family or share on social media. Donors can make a donation in just a few clicks!

Remember, you set the tone with your donation. Once potential donors see that you also support the cause, they’ll be more apt to support as well. Donors love to know what their money is doing and can be more willing to donate if they have that information.

1. Set up your Participant Center

Be specific when asking for donations. For example, “Will you please join me in donating $50 to help end breast cancer forever and to ensure quality care for all?” Be sure to keep them updated on your progress!

2. Make a selfdonation

3. Name your price

4. Email TemplatesAccess customized fundraising e-mail templates. This is also located in your participant center. Use them as they are or update with your own personal information and messaging.

5. Matching GiftsThis is an easy one. Ask donors if their company matches donations. Usually it simply requires a donation receipt and a form submitted to the company. They take care of the rest. Companies may even match two-to-three times the amount their employees donate!

6. Email SignatureAdditional ways to communicate. Add a link at the bottom of your signature for folks to donate to your fundraising page. It’s an easy and effective way to get your fundraising message out!
