With the increase in the build-up of new team building companies, the appeal of team building challenges is apparent. Big and small they are everywhere and the
reasons for their use are more diverse than ever. But since when does the idea of a challenge strike a chord with so
much of the working world? The recorded history of team building stretches way back into the early twentieth
century (although I\'m sure it has been around longer in some shape or form), and yet, it is this century that has really taken team building to the fore. I am sure some
would argue that it appears to be a more commercialised venture these days, but the underlying values at the core of team building challenges are perhaps more important
than ever before.
Team - noun *a number of persons forming one of the sides in a game or contest * a number of persons
associated in some joint action
Thinking about the word \'team\' and its definition - look it up in any dictionary and I am sure you would get
something similar if not the same as above - the first instance will always allude to a game, a contest or a
challenge and the second the joining of people in \'action\'.
Looking at this in an analytical stance, it would be deemed appropriate that joining together in a
challenge/contest/game could precede the joining together in action. Thus - the team challenge preceding a
greater sense of team bonding!
I\'m not trying to state that people cottoned on to the potential of team building challenges from a dictionary -
but the coincidental evidence is rather remarkable.
Team Building Challenges speak for themselves in terms of effectiveness and productivity. No longer merely focusing
on the need for better interaction between peers and colleagues, they also allow for an outlet of social
involvement, reflecting more on team attitudes and progress.
The basis of a team building challenge is simple - getting a working group to accomplish something TOGETHER. The
shared sense of achievement alleviates team morale, spirits and pushes the collective forward.
Team + Achievement + fun = happy team + greater productivity
The maths is simple - no bones about it. Gone are the days of simply telling teams they have to work better together -
you need team relationships to grow, and like the dictionary says - it starts with a challenge.
So let\'s think back to the numerous team building companies out there - the sky appears to really be the limit for choice on team building challenges. Your team
really can do ANYTHING. But take a step back - look at the bigger picture and take note of what you NEED. A team building challenge should not last for just one day, one hour or one session - its outcomes need to last much
longer than that.
DO NOT CHOOSE LIGHTLY, a team building challenge is like a partnership - where YOU and IT can work towards the greater goal (even choosing the right fun challenge can
increase team bonds).
Think about your team, think about what you are building on(your start position) and think about the challenge to
get to the finish line.
