On th is play, theX i s going to be the hero. He is theone who is going to score . He is going to run an uproute , jus t as w e worked on in the "pat and go" dr i l l.

On occasion, w e le t h im run the skinny post . The Yreleases inside of the Sam linebacker and over theM ike l inebacker. He is going to run a cross ing route.Whe n he ge t s over the ba l l, he wi l l be abou t13 yardsdeep. As he crosses the hash mark, he w i l l be about17 yards deep. I f he ran out of bounds a t the s idel ine ,h e w o u l d b e22 yards deep. Af ter he crosses the ball ,i f it is zone coverage, h e has the free dom to hook upwhere ver he can find a dead area.

On the back side, the Z starts a good post route. Heturns the route into a post curl, an d a lot of t imes, hetakes it back outside.

We have only one pass protection. W e block man-on-man. We ask the center t o locate the Mike l inebacker. The center, fullback, and halfback are responsible for.the linebackers. The halfback checks the W il l linebackerand releases out on an o ption ro ute off the l inebacker. His patter n is about 4 yards deep. The fullback checksthe Sam l inebacker and runs a swin g route .

'The quarterback takes five long steps and two shortsteps i n his drop. It is a seven-step drop. The differencebetween a f ive- and seven-s tep drop is no t very much.I f you have a weak-a rmed quar te rback ,it doesn ' tmat ter. I 've had plenty of we ak arms throw this p lay.The up rou te i s on ly abou t a 35-yard th row on theouts ide shaulder. The skinny pos t would be throw n onthe ins ide shoulder. That i s where w e are t rying to gowi th the ba l l fi r s t. Wh en the quarte rback h i t s h i s f i f ths tep, he knows wh ere he is going w ith the bal l . He is

go ing over the top to th eX, taking the Y coming acrossthe middle , or h i t t in g the back on the opt ion route . Hehas a 1-2-3 progression on the three-receiver side anda cur l - f la t progress ion on the two-receiver s ide.

    Y CROSS14 zzflr

W e take th i s pa t t e rn and p rac t iceit us ing wh a t wcall "routes on air." W e have taken big, tall dumand p laced them on the f i e ld in pos i t ions to in

defensive drops. In15 minutes , we can go throughour routes an d really rep them hard. You can sedummies up any way you l ike , but I 'l l show thema two-d eep and f ive-under zone.

W e tak e five quarterbacks. They each have a rethrow . One quarterback calls the cadence. They ala t the same t im e and go through their reads . quarterback has a d ifferent read. As the balls are thyou should be a ble to te l l where the reads are. Theba l l th rown shou ld be the th row to theX. The last balthrow n should be to the sw ing route to the fullbacw an t the quar te rback i n a t igh t s i tua t ion when thro win g the bal l . That i s why they are a l l in thearea. I t gets t ig ht in the p ocket sometimes.

    This is also a great con ditioning drill. W e don't runafte r pra ctice at our p lace. Whe n practice is over, it'This d r i l l i s throw n from about the 40-yard l inein. One every p lay the receiver has to score. In f rom this d r i l l on i n every d r i l l w e have, the recor backs have to score. In this dril l , th e receivers the bal l , nooseit, tuck i t away, and score. Also ycan wa tch a l l your quar terbacks a t once.

1SCRAMBLE FOR QUARTERBACK stunts we expect to see. A ll th e receivers know tha tthey are out because there are no linebackers. BeforeThe quarterback the play tells the rest of thequarterbacks which wa y he is going to scramble. Hedoesn't t ell the receivers.

The quarterback takes t he snap, sets up in the pocket,

QB QB and scrambles. All the quarterbacks fol lo w him. Thereceivers go to their scramble routes. The quarterbackscrambles right. We are going to th row five balls. All the\JJ balls have to be perfect and have to be caught. Theoffensive linemen have finished their lit tle deal and arewatching. I f we catch all five balls, they clap one time i

We do th is drill every Thursday during the season and unison. If a ll five balls are n ot caught, the offensiveevery night in two-a-days. After the second practice, we linemen ride the receivers and quarterbacks out.bring our ql~arterbacksn for about 30 minutes of individualdrills. This is one of those dl-ills. TE AM SCRAMBLE DRILL

Our Thursday, practice goes something like this. After ourwarm-up drills, we spend about 20 to 25 minutes onspecial teams. At the end of practice, w e have a big teamperiod where w e go over team game plan. It s with helmetand shorts against the scoutteam. They are barely moving. They just lin e up. We run our entir e game script, whichconsists of 85 plays. We script the whole game. We aregoing to run i t perfectly. If they don't doit right, we do itover. We really don't know how long this period is goingto take. Theoretically, we can run those 85 plays in 40minutes. We do that now. The fir st year, this period tookabout tw o hours because they didn't do i t perfectly.

Between the special period and the game plan period isa five-minute team scramble dril l. This drill is a moralebooster for our offensive line. Those guys work theirbutts off. Basically, wh at we te ll them is that in ouroffense, you are going to have a street figh t about 50

times a game. They are going to have to fight a guywho is faster and stronger than they are. He may notbe as big as they are, but he is madder than they are. They can't lose any of th e fights . They have to win a ll50 of them. They have a tough job.

We line up our team offense on the 30-yard line goingin. The star ting quarterback takes the snap. The otherfour quarterbacks are standing to the side. The linecoach takes the second 0 line and lines them up asdefensive linemen. They jog through the defensive line

We do a "bandit" drill. This is a good thing and can beput into any offense. We mark the practice fieldincluding th e coaches' box. We get our offensive subson one side and the defensive s ~ b s n the other. A

manager spots the ball each time, movingit

from hashto middle to hash mark, all the way down the field. We are going to run 10 plays as fast as w e can. Thereis no huddle for the offense or defense. The defensecan strip the ball from the receivers if they can getclose enough. Otherwise, it just touches football. Wedo this all the way down the field. In a 15-minuteperiod, you can get about three sets done. In our tw o-a-days, we go number 1 s against number 1 s twice andthe number 2s once. It is a good way to train thequarterback to see if he can run the offense quickly.
