  • Football Linebacker Drills

    Football Linebacker Drill #1

    Agility Drill

Objective - Teach good feet agility and to keep the shoulders square.

Action - Align five dummies on a line. Place a cone about 5 yards away on either side of the

dummies. Line up your linebackers in single-file at one of the cones. On the coach's first

signal, the first player in line sets up in a good hitting position. On the 2nd signal, the

linebacker leads with his right foot as he shuffles over the dummies. At the last bag,

the player turns and runs past the 2nd cone. After each player goes through the bags, have

them repeat the football linebacker drill in the other direction.

Coaching Details - Make sure each linebacker has the shoulders square, head up and is in a

proper hitting position. Be sure they shuffle their feet without crossing over.

    Football Linebacker Drill #2

    "Read" Drill

Objective - Develop foot agility and the ability to read the flow of the ball.

Action - Align 2-3 dummies about a yard apart and at a 45. Then align 2-3 more dummies

the same way so you create a "V" shape. The coach stands between the bags while the

linebackers are positioned in a single-file line at the point of the "V". On the coach's 1st

signal, the first player gets in good hitting position. On the 2nd signal, the coach points

either right or left and the player hits the 2-3 dummies in that direction. After the last

dummy, the linebacker should get back into hitting position again to finish the football linebacker drill.

Coaching Details - Keep your linebackers low in proper hitting position with shoulders square, head up. Be sure they shuffle their feet without crossing over.

    Football Linebacker Drill #3

    Downhill Shuffle Drill

Objective - Improve fundamentals of the downhill shuffle and foot agility.

Action - For this football linebacker drill, set up 5 dummy bags where you have 1 yard of

space between each one and so it forms a line that's at a 45 to the line of scrimmage.

Align the linebackers in a single file on the line. On the coach's signal, the first 'backer

breaks down into the hitting position. At the next signal, the player leads with the right foot as he shuffles over the bags.

Coaching Details - Keep your linebackers low in proper hitting position with shoulders

square, head up. Emphasize an "attack" mentality. Run this football drill for linebackers from both directions so the players practice leading with each foot.

    Football Linebacker Drill #4

    Stay In the Box Drill

  • Objective - Teach linebackers to stay their ground and to deliver a blow after only one step.

Action - Use 4 cones to make a 2 yard square with the linebacker inside the square. Position

2-3 lineman about 5 yards outside the square. On the signal, the linemen try to block the linebacker out of the box. Keep the linemen coming quickly one after the other.

Coaching Details - Make sure the linebacker is in good low position with the head up and

delivers a good strong blow to each lineman during this football linebacker drill.

    Football Linebacker Drill #5

    Step in the Hole Drill

Objective - Teach linebackers to flow to the football and then fill the hole for the tackle.

Action - Align about 6 dummies in a line about a yard or yard and a half from one another.

A linebacker lines up on one side and a running back faces him on the other side. Have the

back run down the line, then come forward into one of the gaps. The linebacker must mirror

the back down the line, then fill the hole and make the tackle when the back makes his move.

Coaching Details - Be sure the linebacker stays low and makes a quick move into the hole

with power to make the tackle. 457809392 footballtips http://www .footb

    Football Linebacker Drill

    #6 Popsicle Drill

Objective - Teach 3-point contact fundamentals.

Action - For this football linebacker drill, position linebackers in a single file in front of the

one-man sled. On the coach's signal, the first player gets in a proper stance about a yard

and half to two yards in front of the bag. On the next signal, the 'backer hits the sled with

correct 3-point contact and continues to chop his feet. On the third signal, the player releases from the sled, take two steps upfield and then get into a proper hitting position.

Coaching Details - Be sure to check stances. Emphasize that the linebackers must roll their hips on contact with the sled and work on getting separation.

    Football Linebacker Drill #7

    One on One Drill

Objective - Teach to react to various blocks in space.

Action - Position 2 cones about 2-3 yards apart with a blocker in the middle. Align the

linebacker about 3-4 yards in front of the blocker. The coach decides which block the

blocker will use (pull, trap, down block, base, pass set, zone scheme, etc) and on the coach's signal the linebacker reacts.

Coaching Details - Check stance. Emphasize the need for proper read and reaction.

  • Football Linebacker Drill #8

    Interception Drill

Objective - This football drill for linebackers develops good hands for getting those desperately needed turnovers.

Action - Position the players in a single-file line. The first linebacker backpedals, then, on

coach's signal, either breaks left or right at a 45 angle. He intercepts the pass and sprints upfield.

Coaching Details - Be sure the linebackers use good hip movement on the break left or right during this football linebacker drill.

    Football Linebacker Drill #9

    Zone Drop Drill

Objective - Teach how to drop back and break on the football.

Action - Position three receivers 12-15 yards off the line (already positioned behind the

linebackers). Put one receiver in the middle of the field, one on the left hash, and one on

the right hash. Line up two linebackers in their proper stance and position off the line. The

QB or coach drops back (3, 5 or 7-step) as the linebackers take their drops, get square and

break on the ball. One LB intercepts the football while the other one blocks the closest

    receiver.

Coaching Details - Check stances and drop technique during the football linebacker drill. Emphasize squaring up when the quarterback sets his feet.

    Football Linebacker Drill #10

    Read Routes Drill

Objective - Teach how to read pass routes.

Action - Put a safety back 15 yards in the middle, a corner about 12-14 yards back on the

right hash and a third defender 5 yards off the ball. Line up a player in the tight end position

on the right side. The linebacker who'll run the drill first lines up between the short defender

and the tight end in a proper stance. The coach tells the tight end to run a flat, cross or

vertical route. At the snap, the quarterback takes a 5 or 7-step drop as the linebacker

reacts to the tight end's route. The QB should throw the ball to the safey, corner or dump it

off so the LB has to square up and make a break on it.

Coaching Details - Check stance and drop technique. Emphasize read, react and break on the ball. Run the football linebacker drill to both sides.

  • Football Defensive Line Drills

    Football Defensive Line Drill #1

    Initial Step Drill (Ball)

Objective - Teach your defensive line an explosive first step at the snap of the ball without

    going offsides.

Action - Align 2-3 defensive linemen on the line in their stances. The football is tied to a

rope. The coach has the rope and barks out the offensive cadence, trying to get the linemen

to jump. At the snap, have the defenders explode out of their stances 4-5 yards up the

field, then have the next group get set for their turn.

Coaching Details - Make sure your defensive linemen have good fundamentals in their

stances and when they take that initial step off the line. Break any offsides habits during this football defensive line drill.

    Football Defensive Line Drill #2

    Initial Step Drill (Man)

Objective - Teach defensive linemen to react off the offensive line's movement.

Action - Divide defensive linemen into pairs (one will be offense, one defense) and have the

first pair line up on a line of scrimmage. The coach coach barks the signal and the offensive

player explodes out into the defender when ready. The defensive player must react on the movement. Repeat drill with the next pair and so on.

Coaching Details - Make sure your defensive linemen have good fundamentals in their

stances and when they take that initial step off the line. Emphasize the need to react off the

    man, not the cadence.

    Football Defensive Line Drill #3

    Six-Point Sled Drill

    Objective - Roll the Hips

Action - Defensive linemen line up single-file in front of a one-man sled for this football

lineman drill. Get the first lineman positioned on all fours right up close to the sled. At the

whistle, have the player explode into the sled with hands up and hips rolled. The defender

then rolls sideways out of the way so the next defensive lineman can get into position.

Coaching Details - Be sure your defensive lineman keep their heads up and knees on the

    ground for proper hip roll.

    Football Defensive Line Drill #4

    Hip Roll Drill (from knee)

Objective - Develop the ability to roll the hips with power.

  • Action - Defensive linemen line up single-file in front of a one-man sled. Get the first

lineman positioned on one knee right up close to the sled. At the whistle, have the player

explode into the sled with hands up and hips rolled, then get back into position on the

opposite knee. Have him repeat the football drill, then roll sideways out of the way so the next defensive lineman can get into position.

Coaching Details - Be sure your defensive lineman keep their heads up, sink their hips and roll forward with the correct hand placement.

    Football Defensive Line Drill #5

    Explosion Drill

Objective - Teach explosion out of the stance.

Action - Position a cone 10 yards to the left of a one-man sled with another cone 10 yards

to the right. Line up the defensive linemen in a single-file in front of the sled with the first

player in his stance about a yard away. On the coach's signal, the defender must explode

into the sled pad and drive the sled up with short, choppy steps. On the coach's next signal,

the player drops the sled and sprints out to the right or left cone, depending on which one the coach points to.

Coaching Details - Allow your players to practice this drill out of the two, three and four

point stances. Check stances take-off technique. Emphasize the need for proper hip roll as the defensive linemen lift the sled on contact. Watch hand placement fundamentals.

    Defensive Line Drill #6

    5-Man Sled

Objective - Develop hand explosion and footwork.

Action - Align the defensive linemen in a single-file facing the first dummy on the five-man

sled. The first player gets in his stance and at the whistle, he explodes up into the first

dummy. The defensive lineman should use good hand position and be leveraged on contact.

Then he moves down the sled attacking the remaining four bags with his hands. Then the

next defender starts the football defensive line drill.

Coaching Details - Your defenders should come out of their stances low, with power and

explode their hands up into the dummy. Be sure they come off the "blocker" well and work on quick feet shuffling as they move down the sled.

    Defensive Line Drill #7

    Shed Drill

Objective - Teach correct hand technique when shedding blockers.

Action - Pair up defensive linemen (one on offense, the other is the defender) and have

them line up on a line of scrimmage. On the coach's signal, the offensive player drives his

helmet beyond the defensive player's right side in order to try and knock him off the line.

The defender should shuffle to the right and shove his hands into the blocker's numbers in

order to try and negate the block. Once he's locked up, the defender should then try to

    escape from the blocker.

  • Coaching Details - Watch for correct starting stances and run the defensive line drill from

both directions. Emphasize quick foot movement to your defenders and correct hand

placement in order to get good leverage.

    Defensive Line Drill #8

    Attack Blocking Schemes

Objective - Teach defensive linemen fundamentals of beating various blocking schemes.

Action - Section defensive linemen into groups of three (two blockers and one defender).

The coach will identify a blocking scheme, such as a pull, double team, reach block, etc., as

well as whether to go off the ball or man movement. On the signal, the defender attacks the whatever block has been called, using the proper technique for that blocking scheme.

Coaching Details - Emphasize and teach proper fundamentals for defeating the various

    blocking schemes.

    Defensive Line Drill #9

    Contain Responsibility Drill

Objective - Teach the fundamentals of keeping contain responsibility.

Action - Align two blockers: one on the line with the other positioned right behind him, both

facing the defender who is lined up "head up" over the first blocker. For this example, we'll

run the drill to the defender's right, so line up a running back behind the blockers and offset

to the defender's left. On the coach's signal, the first blocker tries to hook the defender

inside as the running back sweeps out the defender's right side. After the defender gets

around the first block, the second blocker tries to chop block him as the RB tries to get

outside. The defender gets through the second block, then moves in to tackle the running

    back behind the line.

Coaching Details - Emphasize to the defender the need to keep his outside leg and arm free.

Run the defensive line drill to both sides. Be sure the defender attacks upfield, concentrates

on one blocker at a time until he's free to attack the next block, then takes down the RB

    with an angle tackle.

    Defensive Line Drill #10

    Reaction Drill

Objective - Teach better reaction skills to offensive lineman movement.

Action - Position 3 cones into a triangle, each about 7-10 yards apart. Put a running back at

one cone, with a blocker facing the defensive lineman down between the other two cones.

The coach stands behind the defender and signals to the running back and blocker whether

to run to the right or left cone. On the signal, the RB runs to a cone while the defensive

lineman fights off the block and prevents the ball carrier from reaching the cone.

  • Football Tackling Drills

    Football Tackling Drill #1

    Fit Position

Objective - Teach proper tackling form.

Action - Separate your defenders into 2 groups: ball carriers & defenders facing each on a

line of scrimmage. On the coach's signal, the defender's engage the ball carriers in a fit

position and hold on as the coach checks for proper form - feet about shoulder width apart for good base, knees bent, back flat, butt out and arms wrapped around the buttocks.

Coaching Details - Check for proper fit form during the football drill. Be sure defenders hit

with their shoulder or chest with the head up.

    Football Tackling Drill #2

    Fit Follow Through

Objective - Teach the follow through action of the tackle.

Action - For this football tackling drill, separate your defenders into 2 groups: ball carriers &

defenders facing each on a line of scrimmage. On the coach's signal, the defender's engage

the ball carriers in a fit position - then on the second signal, the defenders should roll their

hips and bring the ball carriers up and back about 5 yards.

Coaching Details - Emphasize hip roll and leverage.

    Football Tackling Drill #3

    Form Tackle Drill

Objective - Teach proper form tackling technique.

Action - Section defenders into two groups that face each other, about 5 yards apart. One

group of players are the ball carriers and they begin moving toward the defenders as the

defenders move in for a proper form tackle. The ball carriers shouldn't resist the tackle during the football tackling drill.

Coaching Details - Check for proper tackling form.

    Football Tackling Drill #4

    Goal-Line

Objective - Teach proper form tackling technique.

Action - Separate your defenders into 2 groups: ball carriers & defenders. Place 2 cones on

the line, spaced about five yards apart. The first defensive player in line lines up with his

feet on the line of scrimmage. The first ball carrier lines up about 3 yards away from the

defender. On the coach's signal, the ball carrier attempts to get past the defender between

the cones. The defender, of course, steps up and makes the tackle before the ball carrier

  • can do so. The ball carrier should get creative and do whatever it takes to score during the football tackling drill.

Coaching Details - Check for proper tackling form.

    Football Tackling Drill #5

    Angle Tackle Drill

Objective - Teach fundamentals of the angle tackle.

Action - Section defenders into two groups that face each other, about 5 yards apart. One

group of players are the ball carriers and others are defenders. Place two cones about five

yards apart and halfway between the first ball carrier and defender in line. The coach should

stand behind the defender, points in which direction the ball carrier should go. On the

coach's signal, the ball carrier begins the football tackling drill by running to the designated

cone while the defender moves in to make an angle tackle. Proper technique is to get the head across the runner's body.

Coaching Details - Check for proper tackling form. Be sure the defenders don't over-run the play and that they stay on the backside of the ball carrier.

    Football Tackling Drill #6

    Open Field Tackle Drill

Objective - Teach defenders how to tackle in the open field. Action - For this football

tackling drill, set up three dummy bags in a line (length-wise)on a line of scrimmage close

to one another. Then place a cone down the line of scrimmage and five yards away from

and to either side of the bags. Then place one cone about 3 yards upfield and away from the

middle bag, then another on the other side (4 cones used total, forming a diamond shape

    around the three bags).

Separate your defenders into 2 groups: ball carriers & defenders. The ball carrier starts

behind one of the middle cones and the defender behind the other middle cone. On the

coach's signal, the ball carrier runs toward the middle cone, then breaks to one of the side

cones set up on the line of scrimmage. The defender must read this action, then close quickly and make the open field tackle.

Coaching Details - Check for proper tackling form. Emphasize staying under control as the defenders close in on the ball carriers.

    Football Tackling Drill #7

    Oklahoma Drill

Objective - Teach defenders to shed the block and make the tackle during this physical football tackling drill.

Action - Separate team up into 3 different groups:

    1) Centers & guards vs. linebackers & nose guards.

    2) Tackles & tight ends vs. defensive tackles & defensive ends.

  • 3) Wide receivers vs. defensive backs

Each group has 2 dummy bags positioned about 3-5 yards apart. Each group also has a

quarterback and a running back. On the coach's signal, the quarterback hands off to the

back, who tries to make it through the space created by the bags. The defender attempts to

shed the offensive players block to "kill" the running back.

Coaching Details - Make this a very competitive football tackling drill. Pit the offense vs. the

defense and challenge each side to do better. Keep score for bragging rights. Many teams begin camp with this drill to set a physical tone right from the start.

    Football Tackling Drill #8

    Chase Drill

Objective - Teach defenders to strip the ball when trailing the ball carrier from behind.

Action - Separate your defenders into 2 groups: ball carriers & defenders. Each line is in

single file: ball carriers at line of scrimmage & defenders alongside but staggered 2-3 yards

behind. On the coach's signal, the first ball carrier starts the football tackling drill by running

about half speed down the field while the first defender sprints up and attempts to strip the football as they come up behind the runner.

Coaching Details - Run the football tackling drill from both directions and give each player

sufficient reps as a defender. Be sure your defenders don't sacrifice a good tackle as they

try to strip the ball. They should come down on the ball or attempt to punch up through the ball as they begin to bring the ball carrier down.

    Football Tackling Drill #9

    Strip Receiver Drill

Objective - Teach defenders, especially linebackers & defensive backs to strip receivers of

the ball as soon as the catch is made.

Action - Align your defenders into two groups about 5-7 yards apart on the sideline. One

group is the receiver group and the other will be the defenders. Put the defenders about a

yard or two out from the sideline. The coach, positioned at the numbers and about 10-12

yards from the receiver group, throws a pass to the first receiver who has run a pattern

across the field. The defender breaks on the receiver and attempts to strip

the football as soon as the receiver makes the catch.

Coaching Details - Give both groups a chance to be the defender group and run the football

tackling drill from both directions. Pass the ball out in front of the receiver and teach your

defenders to break for the interception point and strip the football by bringing the outside arm down on the receiver's upfield arm.

  • Defensive Back Drill #1

    Backpedal Drill

Objective - Teach DB's the proper fundamentals of the backpedal.

Action - Align your defensive backs into two, single-file lines at the sideline. Coach stands

between the two lines and on his signal, the first player in each line backpedals out to the

hashmarks. Continue with the next one in line until each defensive back has a sufficient number of reps.

Coaching Details - Their feet should be shoulder-width apart. Keep your DB's low, bent at

the waist, shoulders over the thighs with their weight distributed evenly over the balls of the

feet. Be sure the players' eyes are locked on yours as they backpedal in a straight line (use

the yard lines to keep them straight).

You need to basically relate to your defensive backs that they're reversing the mechanics of

running forward. Have them swing their arms back as they take each step to help move the body backward (just like you do to get the body going forward when running normally).

    Defensive Back Drill #2

Backpedal & React to Ball Drill

Objective - Teach players to backpedal, then react to where the ball is thrown.

Action - Start this defensive back drill the same as Drill #1. This time, as the DB's get to the

hashmark, the coach points either to the right or left. The backs must break from their backpedal in the direction the coach points.

Coaching Details - Same as defensive back drill #1. Concentrate on getting your players to

make a fast break in the correct direction. As a variation, you can have your DB's react to where you look and then throw the football to one of them.

    Defensive Back Drill #3

    Hip Drill

Objective - Develop flexibility in the hips.

Action - Align your defensive backs into two, single-file lines at the sideline. On the coach's

signal, the first DB in each line begins backpedaling. When the coach points, the players

open up and run in that direction. Then the coach points in the other direction, the DB's

pivot, open their hips in the new direction and run. On the next signal, the defensive backs

break and move to the back of the line.

Coaching Details - During this defensive back drill, be sure your DB's stay low when

changing directions and drive the near elbow to open up the hips. Don't allow the players to

drift when turning and running. Emphasize correct stance, start and backpedaling fundamentals.

    Defensive Back Drill #4

    Zone Turn Drill

  • Objective - Teach DB's the correct zone turn fundamentals.

Action - Align your defensive backs into two, single-file lines at the sideline. On the coach's

signal, the first DB in each line begins backpedaling. The coach points to the right or left and the players then execute a zone turn and run to the hash mark.

Coaching Details - Emphasize correct stance, start and backpedaling fundamentals. Make

sure each DB practices the zone turn to the right and left. Drive the near elbow to open up

the hips. Emphasize the need to get out of the backpedal and into the sprint quickly. Watch for drifting during the defensive back drill.

    Defensive Back Drill #5

    Centerfield Turn Drill

Objective - Teach DB's the correct centerfield turn fundamentals.

Action - Align your defensive backs into two, single-file lines at the sideline. On the coach's

signal, the first DB in each line begins backpedaling. The coach points to indicate which

direction the players should perform a zone turn in. The coach then points in the other direction, at which point the DB's execute a centerfield turn at 45 degrees.

Coaching Details - Emphasize correct stance, start and backpedaling fundamentals. Run this

defensive back drill in both directions so players practice the centerfield turn to both sides.

Make sure the DB's get their heads turned around quickly to find the receiver and football again.

    Defensive Back Drill #6

    Backpedal Tag Drill

Objective - Work on backpedal speed.

Action - Position defensive back five yards from a receiver. On signal from coach, have the

receiver sprint toward the DB to tag him. The defender works on gaining speed to his

    backpedal technique.

Coaching Details - Don't allow your players to break the fundamentals they learned in defensive back drill #1 as they now concentrate on the speed of their drops.

    Defensive Back Drill #7

    Backpedal Weave Drill

Objective - Teach DB's to stay in control and leveraged in their backpedal technique as they

    react to a receiver's breaks.

Action - Align your players at the sideline in two lines just like defensive back football drill

#1. This time, as the players backpedal, the coach signals which direction to weave. The

defensive backs should weave in an "S-pattern" while staying in the proper backpedal

technique (use hips and feet to aid each change of direction). At the hashmarks, the coach gives a signal to break right or left.

  • Coaching Details - Again, don't allow your players to lose proper stance, form or mechanics

as they add this new movement to the defensive back drill. The shoulders should remain

square to the line. Feet shouldn't be crossed during this defensive back drill. This is a drill

you should start slow and work up to full speed so your players have a chance to learn the

correct technique. As a variation, you can throw the ball to one of the DB's on the hashmark break.

    Defensive Back Drill #8

    Zone Protect Drill

Objective - Another backpedal defensive back drill that teaches defensive backs to cover the

deep zone. Shows them it's possible to outrun the football and make the play.

Action - This one begins to incorporate the backpedal into more game-like conditions as

you'll use a QB and two WR's for the DB to cover. Position a receiver on each hashmark with

the defender five yards off the line of scrimmage in the middle of the field. At the snap, the

receivers run go routes straight down the hashes while the defensive back backpedals

ahead of them. As the quarterback turns to one side to throw, the DB rolls his hips in that direction and sprints to the receiver for the knock-down or interception.

Coaching Details - Help your players develop a nice, fluid turn out of the backpedal. Teach

them to accelerate through their turn and break into the sprint quickly. Watch that the

defensive backs take the proper angle, not flat to the sideline. Have the quarterback throw the ball high 20-25 yards down the field.

  • Offensive Line Drills

    1) Stance & Start Drill

Objective - Teach linemen the correct way to "start", or fire out from their stance.

Action - For this offensive line drill, position your linemen along the line of scrimmage. At

the coach's signal, have the offensive linemen "fire out" of their stances.

Coaching Details - In their stance, linemen's feet should be shoulder-width apart and

pointed straight ahead. Teach offensive line players to step out with the back foot to

maintain their base as the first step out replaces their down hand. The head should remain

up, the back flat as they take quick steps out. Be sure your players stay low as they roll

over the up foot with the knee pointing to the ground.

    2) Fit Drill

Objective - To teach the straight ahead base block.

Action - Align three or four defenders in the standing "fit" position with three or four

offensive linemen in front of them. The linemen should be set in their stances. At the snap,

have the linemen explode either right or left into the defenders as they perform a basic drive block.

Coaching Details - Watch for good stances and leg follow-through during this offensive line

drill. Make sure players' backs are arched, butts are down and their heads are up "seeing"

the defender's jersey number. On contact, the elbows should be in with palms near the bottom of the defender's shoulder pad breastplate.

    3) Fit Follow-Through Drill

Objective - To teach proper follow-through when blocking.

Action - Instead of lining your linemen up in their stances, have the offensive line drill start

with them already in the "fit" position against the defender. At the coach's signal, the

offensive line players will roll their hips and accelerate forward. The idea is to teach the

players to drive the defenders back until the coach blows the whistle.

Coaching Details - Watch for proper hip roll and foot acceleration. Don't allow your blockers to over-extend and lose proper leverage during this offensive line drill.

    Sled Offensive Line Drills

    Line Drill #1

    One-Man Drive

    Objective - Improve leg drive.

Action - Get your linemen into a single file in front of a one-man sled, with the first player

about 1 yard away from the sled. On the coach's signal, the first lineman performs a base

  • block (with explosive power) into the sled. On the next signal, the player then does a seat

roll and sprints ahead five yards before going to the end of the line. Repeat offensive line

drill with next player in line.

Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance and takes a correct first step

out with an explosive motion. Make sure they're moving the sled ahead in a straight line

    with power-based, short steps.

    Offensive Line Drill #2

    Hip Roll (2-Man Sled)

Objective - Develop the hip roll.

Action - Divide linemen up into two lines in front of a 2-man sled, with the first player in

each line about 1 yard from the sled. On the coach's signal, each player, without moving the

feet, moves the sled ahead with the forward thrust of the hips. On the next signal, the

players then do a seat roll and sprint ahead five yards before going to the end of the line.

Repeat offensive line drill with next players in line.

Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance and takes a correct first step

out with an explosive motion without the feet coming together.

    Offensive Line Drill #3

    Drive and Roll (2-Man Sled)

    Objective - Improve leg drive.

Action - Line up blockers like in Drill #2. Also, position a player on either side and about 5

yards beyond the sled, each holding a blocking dummy. At the coach's signal, the first

player in each line explodes their inside shoulder into the sled and drives it straight ahead.

At the next signal, each player performs a seat roll and explodes forward to block the

lineman holding the dummy on their side of the sled. The two players who just performed

the offensive line drill, now become the dummy holders while the original dummy holders

now go to the end of the lines. Repeat offensive line drill with the next players in line.

Coaching Details - Be sure each lineman is in a good stance. Make sure they're moving the

sled ahead in a straight line with power-based, short steps. Emphasize "explosion" out of

    the stance.

    Offensive Line Drill #4

    5-Man Drive

Objective - Improve start and drive block with the 5-man sled.

Action - Have the first unit line up in front of the 5-man sled. On the coach's signal, have all

five blocker's hit the sled with the same shoulder and move the sled forward. On the next

signal, have all players sprint out laterally to the side. If they hit the sled with the right

shoulder, they should move out to the left and vice versa. The next unit repeats the

offensive line drill as soon as the group in front of them has moved out of the way.

Coaching Details - Be sure each unit has a chance to block with each shoulder. Be sure each

lineman starts out of a good stance, then uses proper blocking technique.

  • Offensive Line Drill #5

    5-Man Reach Drill

Objective - Improve proper reach block.

Action - Start everything like Offensive Line Drill #4 except that now each blocker is lined

up to the right or left of each sled pad, depending on the direction of the reach block you

want to work on. On the coach's signal, all five players execute a reach block, drive the

sled, then move out laterally on the next signal. The next unit moves in and repeats the

    offensive line drill.

Coaching Details - Be sure each unit has a chance to reach block from both sides. Be sure

each lineman starts out of a good stance, then uses proper blocking technique. Emphasize

driving the sled in a straight line.

Offensive Line Drill #6 5-Man Seat Roll

Objective - Improve agility and explosion.

Action - Align the lineman in a single file just to one side and parallel with the 5-man sled.

The first player in line gets into a 3-point stance in front of the first pad. On the coach's

signal, he fires out into the pad with the inside shoulder, then performs a seat roll and ends

up in front of the next pad. The next player in line, meanwhile, gets into a 3-point stance in

front of the first pad. On the coach's signal, these two players repeat the same drill as the

next player in line gets into position in front of the first pad. Repeat this offensive line drill

until the last blocker in line has reached the far end of the sled.

Coaching Details - Emphasize the need to explode into the sled each time, then get a quick

recovery in order to seat roll to the next pad. Run this drill from both sides.

  • Football Quarterback Drill #1

    Grip Drill

With palm facing down, the quarterback grips the ball and moves the ball up and down.

With each motion, be sure they re-grip the football. After at least 15 reps, repeat drill with

    the other hand.

    Football Quarterback Drill #2

    Drop Drill

Extend arm from the body and hold ball with palm facing down. Drop the ball and then re-

grip instantly. Bring football back to starting point and repeat at least 15 times. Repeat drill with opposite hand. You can also do both hands at same time by using two footballs.

    Football Quarterback Drill #3

    Drop and Rotate Drill

Same as the Drop Drill except that as the ball is dropped, the quarterback rotates his hand

around the ball before re-gripping it. Perform at least 15 reps with each hand, then try with two hands at the same time.

    Football Quarterback Drill #4

    Spin Drill

With palm facing down, hold the ball at one end. With a flick of the fingers, give the ball a

full back spin so it lands on the back of the hand. With the back of the hand, flick the ball

into a full front spin and re-grip the ball with palm facing down again. Do at least 15 reps with each hand.

    Football Quarterback Drill #5

    Basketball Drill

Just like a basketball point guard, move the ball from hand to hand behind the back and

between the legs. Do at least 3 sets that last 25-30 seconds each. Perform this football drill as fast as you can.

The next set of quarterback drills will help develop the proper mechanics of the delivery,

release, follow-through, drop, throwing on the run, etc.

    Football Quarterback Drill #6

    Knee Drill

Objective - To develop the proper wrist snap and release of the ball.

Action - Begin the football quarterback drill with the QB's on both knees. Align them about

five yards apart. The first QB gets the proper grip, lifts the football like he would when

taking the snap and passes the ball to his partner. Be sure the ball is brought up near the

ear, the follow-through is straight at the receiver with palm down. After ten reps back and forth, move the players five yards further apart and continue football drill from there.

  • Coaching Details - Check for proper grip with opposite hand securing the ball. Be sure follow-through is correct and pay attention to accuracy.

    Football Quarterback Drill #7

    Alternate Knee Drill

Repeat QB drill #6 with the right knee down, then with the left knee down.

    Football Quarterback Drill #8

    Wrong Foot Drill

Objective - Teach to throw off the wrong foot when scrambling.

Action - (Reverse this for lefties) The right foot is forward with toes pointed in direction of throw. As the pass is made, shift weight forward onto the ball of the right foot.

Coaching Details - Emphasize the correct rotation of the hips and shoulders to reach the proper "delivery" position.

    Football Quarterback Drill #9

    Release/Follow-Through Drill

Objective - Develop a proper release and follow-through.

Action - Align your quarterbacks with shoulders facing (standing sideways to one another)

and about 7-10 yards apart. As the first player makes the pass, he rotates his hips properly

in order to get the shoulder around for a good throwing motion. Partner repeats the process

and returns the pass. Move the QB's 15 yards apart, repeat the football drill. Repeat at 20 yards.

Coaching Details - Check grip, hip rotation, release and follow-through.

    Football Quarterback Drill #10

    Drop-Back Drill

Objective - Develop the three, five and seven step drop-backs.

Action - Quarterback starts in the pre-snap stance and on coach's whistle, performs a three

step drop. On the third step, he should be set and ready for a pass with the ball held at

chest level. Do the three step 5-10 times, then do the same thing with a five step and seven step drop-back.

Coaching Details - Make sure your QB performs this drill with adequate quickness and that at set-up, most of his body weight is positioned on the back foot.

Very important - Be sure there are no false steps in the drop... Boom, boom, boom, throw.

  • Football Quarterback Drill #11

    QB Clock Drill

Objective - Develop further the drop-back and stance.

    Action - As your quarterback drops back, call out "3 o'clock!", "9 o'clock!", "12 o'clock!", etc.

At each call your QB must turn in that direction, give a pump fake, then step into the next

direction. Repeat this with a each of the three types of drops.

You can also have receivers set up and at each command, your quarterback will turn and throw a pass.

Coaching Details - As with the drop-back drill, be sure your quarterback is taking a quick

drop. Don't allow him to let his throwing fundamentals break down at any time during the football quarterback drill.

    Football Quarterback Drill #12

    Sprint-out Drill

Objective - Develop "throwing on the run" skills

Action - Align a quarterback on a yard line at the sideline 10 yards apart. On coach's signal,

they begin to run down their assigned yard line as they pass the football back and forth.

Once they reach the opposite side of the field, they'll turn around and repeat the football drill back to the starting point.

You can then repeat the drill at 15 yards apart for a slightly longer pass or even five yards

apart in order to practice the pitch-out.

Coaching Details - Be sure they keep their shoulders square and utilize correct hip rotation.

This drill will help develop the skill of leading the receiver. Make sure the follow-through is done correctly.

    Football Quarterback Drill #13

    Circle Drill

Objective - Develop "throwing on the run" skills

Action - Standing about 10-15 yards apart, have two QB's run in a circle as they pass the ball back and forth. On the

coach's signal, they will then reverse and repeat the drill in the opposite direction.

This football quarterback drill will help your QB's get good at leading the receiver as they to

    keep the circle motion going.

Coaching Details - Be sure they keep their shoulders square and utilize correct hip rotation.

  • Running Back Drills For Football "Ball Handling Drills"

    Running Back Drill #1

    Handoff Drill

Objective - Teach correct way to receive handoff, then squeeze ball away properly.

Action - For this running back football drill, separate running backs into two lines, facing one

another about 10 yards apart. Place the ball at the front of one of the lines. The player with

the ball hands off to the running back in the opposite line. As one back takes the football,

he hands off to the next runner. Have backs change lines so they practice receiving

    handoffs from both sides.

Coaching Details - Be sure each player has the inside arm up, elbow out of the way and

locks the ball with the bottom arm. Slowly increase tempo of this running back drill until it reaches game speed.

    Running Back Drill #2

    Bag Drill

Objective - Teach running backs to take handoff, break through immediate contact and hold

    onto the football.

Action - For this running back drill, align two dummy bags next to each other about 2-3

yards from the running back. Have the quarterback or coach handoff. As the back receives

the ball, have them explode through the bags and a bit upfield. Practice with running back

taking handoff from the left and right sides. Have dummy holders take turns hitting the

backs. You can also place a linebacker after the bags to force the ball carriers to make open field moves.

Coaching Details - Be sure your running backs keep a low center of gravity, shoulders down,

knees up. Make sure they practice good ball protection as they move through the running

    back football drill.

    Running Back Drill #3

    Fumble Drill

Objective - Teach backs to protect the ball as well as stay upright on contact.

Action - Position two lines of dummy holders (about 5-6 men in each line) with a small path

in between. Have the running backs take handoff and then sprint into the path between the

bags. The bag holders should hit the back as he moves by and try to knock him down or

fumble the football. As a variation, have the ball carriers hold a ball in each arm during this running back football drill.

  • Coaching Details - Be sure your running backs keep a low center of gravity, shoulders down,

knees up. With the 2-ball variation, your running backs will have to concentrate even more

on protection of the football as they squeeze both into the body.

    Running Back Drill #4

    Strip Drill

Same running back drill as #3 except you have the men in line strip the ball from the

runners rather than hit them with the bags.

    Running Back Drill #5

    Two-Line Bag Drill

Objective - Teach proper hand-off fundamentals.

Action - Using six blocking bags, position them into two rows of three bags each. Be sure

the bags are one yard apart and that the two lines are about five yards apart. Create two

groups each consisting of a few running backs and one quarterback. Each group should be lined up single file behind the first blocking bag.

Begin this running back football drill on the coach's signal. At the whistle, each QB will

handoff to the first running back in his line as the backs cradle the football properly and run

through the three blocking dummies. After the backs break through the third bag in their

line, the coach will signal a direction for the backs to cut to. Have the running backs change lines after each rep.

Coaching Details - Make sure each back sets up in a correct stance and then uses proper

technique when receiving the hand-off. As they run through the bags, be sure they lift their

knees and hold onto the football securely. The cut at the end of the running back football

drill should be sharp and quick.

    Running Back Drill #6

    Football Pitch Drill

Objective - Teach the fundamentals of receiving the pitch.

Action - Align a group of running backs at the sideline on a yard line with another line of running backs lined up at the next yard line so the two lines are 5 yards apart.

Give the ball to the first back in the first line and have him jog in place while the first back

in the next line starts running down the yard line to receive the football pitch. The back with

the football steps out and throws the pitch. When the 2nd running back receives the pitch, he jogs in place as the 1st back runs past and receives the next football pitch.

Continue the running back drill until they reach the other side of the field and then have them repeat it as they come back to the starting position.

Coaching Details - Have your backs practice catching the football pitch with both hands as

they perform this running back drill for football. Also, be sure they look the ball all the way

in and secure it properly before they look back upfield.

  • Running Back Drill #7

    Bad Pitch Drill

Objective - Teach the fundamentals of receiving a bad pitch.

Action - Run this just like the regular pitch running back football drill (Drill #5). Have the player with the ball deliver the football pitch in front of or behind the ball carrier.

Coaching Details - Be sure your running backs pay close attention to securing the football

before worrying about running with it.

    Running Back Drill #8

    Square Cut Drill

Objective - Teach the 90 degree cut.

Action - For this running back drill, position 4 cones in a square with about 5 yards of space

between each. Start by having the running backs go about half speed around the cones,

making a hard, 90 degree cut as they "corner" each cone. When they have this down, push

    it up to regular speed.

Coaching Details - When the drill gets to full speed, emphasize staying low, staying under

control and getting a good push-off with the outside foot. Run the drill both ways so the backs get practice pushing off both the left and right feet.

    Running Back Drill #9

    Trip Drill

Objective - Developing the skill of staying balanced as defenders try to cut out the legs of

    the running back.

Action - For this running back drill, have defenders try to trip up the backs by swinging bags

    at their feet.

    Running Back Drill #10

    High Knee Drill

Objective - Teach backs to keep their knees up high while running.

Action - Lay 4-5 dummy bags down in succession on the field so there is enough space for

the backs to high-step over them. Line up your backs in single file and have them each run over the bags in succession, keeping their knees high.

Coaching Details - Don't allow them to lose focus on proper ball handling during this running

back drill and be sure they keep their eyes looking up and ahead. Emphasize explosive high knee action.

  • Running Back Drill #11

    Stumble Drill

Objective - Teach ball carriers how to keep their balance while falling as well as keeping the ball secured.

Action - Give each back a ball and have them position themselves at the 25 yard line. At the

whistle, instruct them to start running. Every 5 yards, the running backs should place their

palm to the ground as if stumbling. As they get up and regain balance, they should switch

the ball to the other arm. This happens every 5 yards until they reach the goal line, then

repeat the running back drill back to the 25.

Coaching Details - Make sure each running back switches the ball to the opposite arm after

each stumble. Teach proper technique for regaining balance: bring the head up, the chest out and drive the knees forward for power.

  • Wide Receiver Drills

    Receiver Drill #1

    Release Drill

Objective - Teach receivers to release off the line properly.

Action - Align each receiver across from a defender. Use a cone to simulate the QB during

this football receiver drill. Go through different route releases. Teach receivers how to react properly to the defender's positioning and technique.

Coaching Details - Pay close attention to each receiver's release technique. Perform this wide receiver drill with the players lined up to the left of the cone (QB) and to the right.

    Wide Receiver Drill #2

Release, Go Route, Catch High Drill

Objective - Teach receiver to release and then go for the ball at its highest point while

    battling defender.

Action - Have receiver release against a defender playing bump-and-run with a fake or swim

move, then run a go route up the field. Have the quarterback throw the ball high so the receiver and defender battle for the catch.

Coaching Details - Be sure each receiver is learning how to get up and catch the ball at its

highest point. This football receiver drill will also be a good drill for your cornerbacks.

    Receiver Drill #3

    Circle Drill

Objective - Teach hand-eye coordination and the ability to catch all types of passes.

Action - Start with about six receivers positioned in a circle. Give them two footballs and have them pass the ball quickly to one another through the circle.

    Coaching Details - Be sure they are throwing all types of passes to one another in the circle;

low, high, mid-secion, etc. You want your receivers to develop the skill of adjusting to the ball and the ability to "go get it".

    Receiver Drill #4

    Lone Ranger Drill

Objective - Teach hand-eye coordination and basic receiving skills.

Action - Position 4-5 receivers on a line and have them face a lone receiver positioned about

5 yards from them. Give one football to the lone receiver and one ball to one of the others.

The football receiver drill begins with the lone receiver throwing a pass to a receiver in the

line. At the same time, the receiver with the ball in line passes to the lone receiver. Keep

this cycle up for a sufficient amount of reps, then slide everyone sideways until each player has a chance to be the "Lone Ranger".

  • Coaching Details - Make sure each receiver is looking the ball in and catching with their hands.

    Receiver Drill #5

    Tuck-It-In Drill

Objective - Teach to catch with the hands and then tuck the football in to secure it.

Action - For this wide receiver drill, align your receivers in a single-file line. Have the

quarterback or coach throw to the first receiver in line. The receiver should look the pass in,

catch the ball with the thumbs in, then tuck the ball away. After the catch, the receiver runs to the end of the line and the next receiver runs their route.

Coaching Details - Be sure to throw a variety of passes (low, high, etc) so receivers can

practice catching different types of balls. A great football drill for wide receivers where you

    can emphasize great route running.

    Wide Receiver Drill #6

    Sideline Drill

Objective - A wide receiver drill to teach players how to catch the ball at the sidelines.

Action - Position the receivers in a line about 5 yards in from the sideline. At the snap, the

first player runs a short out route and the quarterback throws the ball. The wide receiver then makes the catch with both hands and concentrates on keeping both feet in bounds.

Coaching Details - Run this football receiver drill from the right and left sides. Don't allow

your players to lose proper catching technique because they're worried about getting the feet down. Catch it first, then concentrate on the feet.

Variations - Have the receivers catch, then turn upfield and run up the sideline... Have

them catch it one-handed as they fall out-of-bounds... Have the QB throw high or low passes.

    Receiver Drill #7

    Fumble Drill

Objective - Teach players to protect the ball and to stay upright on contact.

Action - Position two lines of dummy holders (about 5-6 men in each line) with a small path

in between. Have a coach or quarterback throw the football to the first receiver in line. The

wide receiver then sprints between the bags. The bag holders should hit the player as he moves by and try to knock him down or fumble the football.

Coaching Details - During this wide receiver drill, emphasize good body control and keeping

a firm grip on the football.

    Receiver Drill #8

    "Get the Head Around" Drill

Objective - Teach receivers to get the head around and locate the ball quickly.

  • Action - Position the wide receivers in a single file at one of the yard lines with their backs

to the quarterback. The quarterback stands about 12-15 yards behind the line of receivers.

The QB passes to the first receiver in line and yells "Ball!". On that signal, the receiver turns himself around completely, locates the football and makes the catch.

Coaching Details - Be sure your wides receivers get themselves turned all the way around

and are facing the ball during this wide receiver drill. Emphasize the need to get their hands up and in good position to make the catch.

    Receiver Drill #9

    Curl Drill

Objective - Teach the curl route.

Action - Split your receivers into two lines, each line positioned out on the numbers. Put 2

quarterbacks in the middle of the field. At the snap the first receiver in each line explodes

into a 10-yard curl route. At 10 yards, they turn inside and come back to the ball as each

QB passes to the receiver on his side of the field. After the catch, the players should turn

upfield, then go to the back of the line on the opposite side.

A key to this wide receiver drill is to "sell" the go route so the DB is fooled, then lower the

hips, and plant off the outside foot.

Coaching Details - Emphasize to your players that they must come back to the ball. They

should also come out of the break low without any wasted motion. Don't let them use poor catching technique just because they're focusing on the route.

    Wide Receiver Drill #10

    Endzone Drill

Objective - Teach receivers to catch the ball in the endzone while getting their feet down.

Action - Wide Receiver Drill Variation 1 - Have wide receivers run across the back of the

endzone while the quarterback throws the ball high and in front of them. Run the drill from the right and the left.

Wide Receiver Drill Variation 2 - Have receivers run an out pattern to the side of the

endzone. QB throws the ball so the wide receivers must make the catch just before falling out of bounds. Run this variation to both sides.

Coaching Details - Watch their body control. Emphasize getting the feet down in-bounds.

    Receiver Drill #11

    Catch It One-Handed Drill

Objective - This wide receiver drill teaches better concentration by forcing wide receivers to

    catch with one hand.

Action - Position your receivers in a single file line at the line of scrimmage. At the snap,

have the first player run a go route. The quarterback should throw the ball so the receiver can make the catch with his upfield hand.

  • Repeat the wide receiver drill using a square-in route instead of the go route. Be sure to

practice this football drill for wide receivers from both sides so your players can catch with

    the right and left hands.

Coaching Details - Your players should be taught to focus on the football and then look it all

the way in. Make it a point to teach your wide receivers to catch the ball with the hand out

and away from the body. Be sure they then tuck the ball away properly and make their move up the field.

    Wide Receiver Drill #12

    Adjust Drill

Objective - Develop "over the shoulder" catching ability.

Action - Position your receivers in a single file out near the numbers. The quarterback

    stands at midfield with the

ball. Wide receiver #1 runs a go route looking inside for the football but the QB throws a

high arcing ball over the receiver's outside shoulder. The wide receiver must now adjust to

the outside position of the football.

Coaching Details - Be sure your players achieve a quick, fluid motion when turning their

hips, shoulders and head in the adjustment to the ball. Keep the arms up and ready as they

turn. Body control is key during this wide receiver drill!

Wide Receiver Drills - Ball Handling

    Wide Receiver Drill #13

    Cut Drill

Objective - Teach wide receivers to make their route cuts decisively and finish each route.

    Helps develop hand/eye coordination.

Action - After deciding which route to run, place a cone where the cut should be made and

position your receiver about 3-4 steps from the cone. The receiver starts to quickly run in

place with hands pumping (as if running the route). At the QB's signal, receiver finishes the

last 3-4 steps, makes the cut at the cone and catches the football. After the catch, the

receiver should tuck the ball and head upfield.

Coaching Details - Teach receivers to snap their heads around quickly to better locate the

ball. Be sure they have their hands in proper position to make the catch cleanly. Once they get this part of the route down, you can run the entire route out of your offensive sets.

    Wide Receiver Drill #14

    Quick Hands

Objective - Work on developing quick hands.

Action - Have the players lie on their backs while the coach stands at their feet and flips the ball to them. The receiver can only raise his arms up to catch the pass.

  • Coaching Details - Give each receiver a good amount of reps on this wide receiver drill. Make sure they get their hands up fast.

    Wide Receiver Drill #15

    Eliminate!

Objective - Teach hand/eye coordination and how to react quickly to the football.

Action - Line up receivers on a yardline with the coach about 7-10 yards away and facing

them. The coach randomly throws the ball to each receiver with a shovel pass. Anytime a player drops the ball, he's eliminated.

Do this wide receiver drill with the players standing and then down on one knee to get them

used to bringing in a low ball. You can increase concentration by having all eliminated players do pushups while they're waiting for the drill to end.

Coaching Details - Make sure receivers are looking the ball in and catching the football with

their hands, not cradling it into their body.

    Wide Receiver Drill #16

    Dive & Catch Drill

Objective - Similar to the "Eliminate!" drill, except now we're teaching players how to dive,

catch and fall when going after a low ball.

Action - Position receivers in a kneeling position about 10 yards from the coach or QB. Throw the football so the players have to stretch out as they dive for it.

Coaching Details - Teach your receivers to land on their sides when completing a diving

catch. Give them practice diving to the right and left sides.

    Wide Receiver Drill #17

    Difficult Catch Drill

Objective - Improve skills at catching the difficult or poorly thrown pass.

Action - Receivers run 10-yard out or in routes. Have the coach or QB throw passes that are either high, low or behind the receivers.

Coaching Details - Emphasize quick location of the ball and getting the hands into position to make the catch.

    Wide Receiver Drills - Concentration

    Wide Receiver Drill #18

    Gauntlet

Objective - This wide receiver drill will teach receivers to catch in traffic, then get upfield.

  • Action - Line up two dummy bags (with some space between them) about five yards off the

line of scrimmage and about 5-7 yards inside of where the wide receiver lines up. A third

bag should be about 5 yards behind the first two.

At the snap, the receiver runs a short in route, the quarterback delivers the football, the

receiver makes the catch and then turns upfield. He should run through the two dummy bags, then make a move on the third bag.

The players holding the first two bags should hit the receiver as he makes the catch. A key

to this wide receiver drill is that the receiver must make the catch and then explode through

the first two bags before making his final move to get around the third bag.

Coaching Details - Teach your players to maintain proper catching techniqe and to stay

focused on the ball, not the defenders. This will help them become better in "traffic" during games.

    Wide Receiver Drill #19

    Blur Drill

Objective - Teach receivers to catch while a DB is blocking their vision.

Action - Split the receivers into 2 lines at the sideline. The lines are about two yards apart.

The quarterback or coach is about 10 yards away near the numbers. The line closest to the

QB will be the defenders and the other line has the receivers.

At the snap, the receivers run across the field while the defenders stay in front of them,

blocking their view of the quarterback. After about 5-10 yards of this, the QB then throws

the ball to the receiver, but "through" the defender so the receiver has to find it, then catch it.

Coaching Details - Emphasize to your receivers that they must keep their concentration off

the DB and on the football. Don't allow them to break down their catching technique just because the catch is a tough one.

    Wide Receiver Drill #20

    Crossing Drill

Objective - Teach receivers to catch while a DB is blocking their vision.

Action - Align two lines on a line of scrimmage facing each other and about 10-15 yards

apart. One line will be the receivers and the other line is the defenders. The quarterback is

positioned about 10-15 yards back and at the point where the two lines will meet.

The wide receiver drill starts with the first receiver and first defender running across the

field toward each other (the receiver will run a bit behind the defender to avoid colliding).

The defender should wave his hands, trying to distract the vision of the receiver as the quarterback throws the ball to the point where the players will cross.

Coaching Details - Teach your players to maintain proper catching techniqe and to stay

focused on the ball, not the defenders. This will help them become better in "traffic" during games.

  • Wide Receiver Drills - Blocking

    Wide Receiver Drill #21

    Stalk Block

Objective - Teach receivers to block defensive backs.

Action - The receiver breaks off the line with the look of a deep flag route (to get the DB

backpedaling). Once the DB recognizes the run play and slows down to make his move, the receiver needs to make contact for the block.

Coaching Details - During this wide receiver drill, teach your players to watch the defensive

back's feet. Emphasize the need to get close to the DB during the initial drive upfield. Also,

look for proper blocking form - hands inside, wide base, head up, butt down.

    Wide Receiver Drill #22

    Mirror Drill

Objective - Teach receivers to block defensive backs.

Action - Position your wide receivers in pairs about five yards apart. One player of each pair

will be the receiver and the other will be the DB. On coach's signal, have the receivers block

as the defensive backs try to get around them. After 5-10 seconds, have players reverse

    roles and repeat the drill.

Coaching Details - Teach your wide receivers to keep good body balance so they can stay positioned in front of the defender. The feet shouldn't cross. Don't turn the hips.

  • Run Blocking Running Back Drills

    Running Back Drill #1

    Fit Drill

Objective - Teach the fundamentals of basic blocking.

Action - Running backs form two groups. Each group lines up on a line of scrimmage so

there is a long line of "pairs" facing one another. One line of players are the running backs

while the other line will be defenders. At the coach's signal, the running backs move into the defenders and perform the "fit" blocking position.

Fit position: Head up, butt down, flat back, feet providing a wide base, hands inside.

Coaching Details - Emphasize the correct fit position with each movement during this

    running back drill.

    Running Back Drill #2

    Maintain Contact

Objective - Teach backs to hold their blocks once contact is made.

Action - Form two single file lines facing one another (one offense, one defense). On the

coach's signal, the offensive player blocks the defender using the fit position form. The

coach signals the defender to move left or right, forcing the running back to hold his block

during the movement. The back must stay locked on the defender until the coach signals the end of the running back drill.

Coaching Details - Emphasize the proper fit position and to keep the running back's feet moving with the defender.

    Running Back Drill #3

    Popsicle Sled

Objective - Teach how to block correctly.

Action - Line up the running backs about 5 yards in front of the popsicle sled. On coach's

signal, the first back in line will burst out of his stance, hit the sled and drive the sled. The

coach should let the running back drive the blocking sled about 5 yards or so, then blow the whistle.

The proper way to hit the sled during this running back drill is with the head up and

shoulders squared. Once contact is made, take choppy steps and maintain a wide base with the legs.

Coaching Details - Emphasize a quick burst out of the stance. Be sure all backs start from a

    proper stance.

    Running Back Drill #4

    Toss Sweep Block

  • Objective - Teach correct toss sweep blocking fundamentals.

Action - For this running back drill, line up your center, QB, fullback and tailback. Position a

blocking dummy or cone on each side where the offensive tackle and tight end would be.

Then have a linebacker positioned on either side of the formation so you can run the

running back football drill to both sides.

At the snap, run the toss sweep. The fullback needs to identify the defender's position and

make a block on the inside shoulder of the defender as quickly as possible. The fullback

should break down right before the block for strength on contact. Also, the fullback must

"read" whether the defender is attacking the block. If so, perform a chop block on the outside of the thighs. If not, kick the defender outside.

It's the tailback's job to stay behind the block and "read" which cut to take.

Coaching Details - Instruct the defenders to come in from different angles and alignments

so the fullback has to adjust his block. Emphasize correct stances, alignments and proper toss sweep technique. Run to both sides.

    Running Back Drill #5

    Off Tackle

Objective - Teach correct off tackle play blocking fundamentals.

Action - Line up your center, QB, fullback and tailback. Position a blocking dummy on each

side where the offensive tackles would be. Then have a defensive end positioned about a yard outside of each dummy.

At the snap, run the off tackle play. The fullback should graze the outside of the blocking

dummy (tackle) and kick out the defensive end. The end should sometimes use a contain

responsibility and sometimes attack the play inside to give the fullback practice with both

blocks. The tailback needs to read the block for the proper lane to run through.

Coaching Details - Emphasize correct stances, alignments and proper off tackle play technique. Run to both sides.

    Running Back Drill #6

    Isolation Drill

Objective - Teach correct isolation play blocking fundamentals.

Action - Line up your center, QB, fullback and tailback. Position four blocking dummies (2

guards, 2 tackles) on the line of scrimmage. Now, put 2 linebackers holding blocking shields

about 3-4 yards off the line (generally positioned between the offensive guard & tackle).

At the snap, run the isolation play. The fullback needs to find the LB on the play side, break

down and then drive the linebacker back. The tailback needs to follow the fullback through the hole and cut off the block.

The play side linebacker needs to attack the fullback while the center kicks out the back side LB as he tries to come across formation for the tackle.

  • Coaching Details - Emphasize correct stances, alignments and proper isolation play technique. Run the running back drill to both sides.

    Pass Protection Running Back Drills

    Running Back Drill #7

    Mirror Drill

Objective - Teach proper pass blocking to running backs.

Action - Position 2 cones on the line of scrimmage about five yards apart. Put a running

back and defender on the line facing one another. They should be approximately two yards apart.

On coach's whistle, the defender shuffles back & forth between the cones while the RB

breaks down and "mirrors" his movements (running back keeps chugging his legs). The

coach should signal again after about 5 seconds. At that point the defender tries to burst past the RB while the RB steps up, pass blocks him and maintains contact.

The running back needs to keep his knees bent during entire running back drill for a proper low position.

Coaching Details - Be sure the RB doesn't cross his feet during the initial shuffling "mirror"

    drill. Slide, step, slide, etc.

    Running Back Drill #8

    Basic Pass Protection Drill

Objective - Teach running backs to pass protect linebackers off the edge.

Action - Line up your center, QB and two running backs split on either side of the QB.

Position two dummy bags out wide as offensive tackles on the line. Put two outside linebackers just outside the tackles.

At the snap, the two linebackes come in on the rush while the backs come up to meet them for the block.

Coaching Details - Emphasize correct stances and alignments. Make sure the running backs

gather themselves as contact is about to be made and that they stay low.

    Running Back Drill #9

    Sprint-Out Pass Block

Objective - Teach correct blocking fundamentals on the sprint-out.

Action - For this running back drill, place 2 cones on the line of scrimmage representing the

offensive tackles. Position your running back, QB and defender (on the edge). At the snap,

the quarterback sprints out, the defender plays contain and the RB sprints out to block the

    defender from an "outside-in" angle.

  • Coaching Details - Teach your running backs to use the shoulder and to drive it through the defender's outside thigh.

  • Youth Football Drills All Begin With Ready Stance:

The Ready Stance drill teaches one of the proper ready football stances. Line up your team into lines and shout ready stance. Walk up and down the lines as the players crouch into their stances. Correct any players that are not in the correct position. This is one

of the most important, basic football skills needed.

    Quick Hit Drill:

The Quick Hit drill helps team members, such as the blocking backs and linemen, in quickly

moving from the Ready Stance into a blocking position. Youth football drills, such as this

one, are basic to the game. The players will make a circle and stand in their Ready Stance.

On your command, the players will pop into a pass protection position, take a quick step

with the outside foot, and assume the squat position ready to strike a blow. Repeat these youth football drills as needed.

Youth Football Drills With Receiver Concentration:

Youth football drills, such as this one, should ensure the receiver can get the ball, hone in

on the ball, and pat attention watching the ball throughout its flight until it lands clutched in

his hands. Getting hit is not a factor in this drill. Take three players holding hand shields

and line them up ten yards deep, three yards apart from one another in a triangle

formation. Your receiver will run a pattern specified by you, which will land him in the

middle of the triangle. Once the receiver enters the triangle, your quarterback will throw a

high pass that will make the receiver jump to make the catch. As the receiver touches the

ball with his hands, the three players in the triangle will jam the receiver with their respective shields.

Youth Football Drills Teach Good Balance:

Good balance is important to all sports, but especially to all youth football drills. For a Good

balance drill, have your team players line up across from one another on the field. Have

each player grab the shoulder pads of the player situated directly in opposite from them.

Each player should take turns trying to knock his opponent off balance. He will do this by pulling, pushing, and tipping his opponent from side to side. The opponent will get down into a low base, and move his feet around to maintain balance.

There are many youth drills for football players. Each one is meant to help youth teams

learn fundamentals of the game, as well as learn the importance of playing as a team unit.

By improving your team in practice, you will be giving them opportunity to overcome any

    obstacles on the field.
