TEACHING AND LEARNING New Dementia Care Learning Resource Working with older people with dementia has often been viewed as difficult and challenging work with little scope for satisfaction or development. With the number of people with the condition expected to rise dramatically over the coming years, organisations are turning their attention to supporting this vulnerable group of people in ways which benefit service users, their families and the staff who work with them. In recent years, Mike Nolan, Tony Ryan and David Reid in the School of Nursing & Midwifery have been striving to draw attention to new ways of supporting people with dementia in the community which enrich the lives of all involved. This work has prompted the development of an educational tool which facilitates learning and professional development around the issues of person and relationship-centred dementia care. Our CD-Rom package uses video footage capturing the experiences of people with dementia, their family carers and the staff supporting them, to highlight how active social participation, carer support and care staff satisfaction can be achieved. The video is supplemented by a range of learning tasks and can be used in a group context or by individual learners. For more information about this new resource please contact t.ryan@sheffield.ac.uk In the pipeline…… In the last issue of PULSE there was a list of new programmes that we’re launching in 2011. Here’s some more information about two of them. Don’t forget that you don’t need to have a degree to access these postgraduate certificate courses if you already have an Advanced Diploma, and once you’ve achieved a PG Cert you can continue your studies to diploma and masters level. Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership & Service Improvement This fully online postgraduate programme will begin in September 2011. The course is designed for health care professionals who are leading, advancing or improving services in health and social care. It will enable each participant to explore the underpinning knowledge and skills relating to leadership and service improvement including: analysis of the policy context; leadership; personal influence and empowerment; effective team-working; personal and organisational change; and service improvement methodology. The course consists of four units which can be taken over one or two years. Postgraduate Certificate in Acute Care This new programme is appropriate for all staff working in an acute care setting and will focus on both clinical and organisational aspects of care. The course aims to give practitioners the opportunity to explore the specialist knowledge and skills necessary for proactively managing, promoting and delivering safe, evidence-based care that addresses the physiological, psychological and cultural needs of patients. The course consists of three units which can be taken over one or two years. For more information please contact Tracey Moore, Taught Programmes Coordinator, tracey.moore@sheffield.ac.uk

Project focusSupporting New Practice NursesThe General Practice Nursing Work-based Induction and Preceptorship Programme is a twelve-month programme funded by NHS Yorkshire and The Humber aimed at nurses new to working in general practice. This course is tailored to meet the needs of the individual nurse, the general practice, and the practice population and aims to assist nurses with making the transition into primary care. It is designed to equip nurses with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to practice as competent, confident and independent practitioners in general practice settings. This is achieved through a programme which combines essential skills teaching with a strong support framework.

In the first six months of the programme nurses receive ‘essential skills’ training. This covers areas which are considered vital to general practice nursing and includes cervical cytology, travel health, vaccination and immunisation, health promotion, ear irrigation, and infection control. The second half of the programme focuses on consolidating learning and building confidence and also includes opportunities to visit alternative practice settings. Support is a strong feature of the programme and nurses are allocated a mentor in their practice and work closely with a practice nurse educator.

If you are new to practice nursing or planning to take up a practice nursing post in South Yorkshire within the next few months you might want to consider applying to join the programme. The next course commences on the 11th May 2011. Further information and application forms are available from Elaine Whitton ([email protected]).
