SONG OF HOUSTON
Through HGOco’s Song of Houston initiative, Houston Grand Opera collaborates with local residents and partner organizations to create the opera of today and to share the stories of Houston’s thriving and diverse communities.
VETERANS SONGBOOKHGOco’s multiyear Veterans Songbook project gives voice to the stories of Houstonians who have served our country and to those of their loved ones, sparking a community-wide conversation about confl ict and courage, strength and sacrifi ce. Through workshops held in collaboration with veterans service organizations, HGOco pairs Houston-area veterans with local composers to create songs representing the range of the veteran’s experience.

Two through-lines propel the story of the opera. The fi rst involves Mrs. de Menil’s dream to create the chapel and her struggles in bringing it to fruition. The second involves the stories of fi ve disparate individuals who visit the chapel between 1972 and the present day, each extolling the signifi cance of the space in their lives.
