Learning Communities: A newclassroom experience By Cody Lynch Special Contributor

Learning Communities was a foreignconcept upon entering Collin CountyCommunity College District (Collin) inthe fall 2005. But after completing myfirst semester, I knew LearningCommunities were the mostinteresting, thought-provoking,academically-enriching classes.

When I was signing up for my first 12hours of college classes, I felt like adeer in headlights. I had no idea whatcourses I needed to sign up for until the academic advisorrecommended four courses to take including both historyand sociology.

She informed me that I could take the classes separate ortogether in a Learning Communities class titled “WhatDoes It Mean To Be an American?,” which combined thetwo-hour long courses into one two-hour course, and Iwould still receive six hours of credit. The idea soundedperfect and I immediately signed up for the course, LRCM8605.C03. The first day of classes, I did not know what toanticipate, but within the first 30 minutes, I knew what toexpect out of the course.

Two professors, two subjects, one grade

The course was taught by two professors working side byside integrating the two subjects into one unique class.Professor Pamela Gaiter, sociology, and professor LarryCollins, U.S. history, presided over the class. Theyinformed the class that the workload would be highbecause it is a two-course class, and we would receive thesame grade for both courses. They also gave us a briefoutline of the work expected of us before the semesterends.

We would have to complete two group projects, a midterm, final, weekly quizzes, two field trips, a service learningpaper or book critique and write four experiential learningpapers on either the various speakers or field trips.

Immediately, I knew that the class would not be easy, andthe work would be intensive, but it would be an amazing

course. The course began with an outline of the readingswe would be required to finish for each week.

After two weeks of classes, groups were chosen and ourfirst group project was assigned. The assignment was tochoose an ethnic group in U.S. history from a list includinggroups from the Ku Klux Klan to Vietnamese refugees, andthen to create a presentation to inform the class about theparticular ethnic group. In addition to the presentation, wehad to type up a work-cited page and each member wasrequired to write a process paper informing the professorshow the other members in the group participated in theproject.

The class had five weeks to complete the project and beready to present their 15- to 25-minute presentation. Before the projects were due, we went on our first field tripto the Holocaust Museum, decided whether we were goingto participate in a service-learning project or write a bookreview, and heard our first speaker, who was a Holocaustsurvivor.

The field trip to the museum was informative, emotional, and allowed the class to observe first hand a historicalevent we had been studying. In addition to touring themuseum, we had lunch in downtown, which allowed theclass to communicate outside of the classroom.

The class period after we went on the field trip, we had todecide between the service-learning project and the bookreview. The service-learning project required the student toparticipate in an organization whose goal is to help thecommunity. Our choices included being a tutor at eitherWebb Elementary School or Caldwell Elementary School, being a Legal Aid, or being a conversation partner with anESL student at Collin. If a student chose to participate inservice-learning, that student would be required to attendthe particular organization once a week for a set period oftime followed by a written paper explaining theirexperience. If a student did not want to participate inservice learning, they could write a three to five page bookreview about a book they selected from a list given by theprofessors.

A course with discourse

After giving our first group presentations, our first twoexperiential learning papers were due and we had anotherspeaker attend the college. All of the speakers heldlectures in Pike Hall at the Central Park Campus. Thisspeaker was Ron Cowart, a Dallas police officer and aVietnam veteran who is a major influence in AsianAmericans experience in Dallas. All of our speakers relatedto the subjects we were studying out of our textbooks. Theprofessors’ goal was to give us an out of the classroomexperience to enhance our learning experience.

Following Cowart’s lecture, we took our midterm exam, which was one of two exams we took during the semester. In addition to the exam covering all the material from our

textbooks, the exam also included questions from the firstgroup presentations. Upon completing our midterm, we hadanother speaker, Victor Lewis, who spoke about theAfrican American experience. Like the other speakers,Lewis spoke about a subject we were in the middle ofstudying in class.

The next week, we went on our second class field trip tothe African American museum and the Latino CulturalCenter at Fair Park. Each field trip was taken during classtime and if the trip was to last longer than the time allowedfor the class, the professors would write a letter for astudent to whom ever they needed. Although this field tripwas not as emotional as the Holocaust museum, it didtouch close to home because it explained the AfricanAmerican and Latino experiences in North Texas. TheAfrican American museum had an amazing amount ofhistorical artifacts, paintings, and photography exhibit thatleft a profound impact on me upon leaving the museum.

The next class period, the second group presentationswere assigned, and the professors allowed the class tochoose their groups. The presentations were over culturallyethnic minority groups in America including Mexican,Cuban, Asian and African Americans. This project had thesame requirements, as the first project except the projectrequired us to integrate new terms and ideas we hadlearned since our last project. When the project wasassigned, we were studying Native Americans experience, and we had a Native American flutist, William Gutierrez, asour next speaker. Gutierrez’s flute playing was a highlightof the class because it was extremely emotional andsoothing at the same time.

After Gutierrez came to speak and play his flute, our lasttwo experiential learning papers were due. At this point, wewere in the final stretch of the class. Two weeks later, following Thanksgiving break, our second grouppresentation was due. These presentations were enjoyablebecause in addition to the presentation, groups broughtfood, music and clothing from the particular group theychose for their project.

One class period we had a culturally infused feastincluding Saudi Arabian, Mexican and Asian food. After ourfeast, we went back to work when the professors handedout the final exam take home essay and our final examreview.

The final exam essay required us to explain the fivedifferent groups we had studied over the semester. Thispaper allowed me to reflect back on what I had learnedabout the American experience for African, Hispanic,Asian, European and Native Americans. The in-classportion of the final included all the material from the mid-term to the final, instead of it being comprehensive.

Final thoughts

On the first day of class, the professors asked us to write a

paragraph on why we took the course and what wethought it meant to be an American. My answer to the firstpart of the question was I took the class because Ireceived six hours of credit in one class and as for what itmeans to be an American, I simply stated that “Being anAmerican, is being free.”

After completing this course, my answers have drasticallychanged. Even though I signed up for the class becausethe courses were required, I learned more about myself, our country, and the importance of an education. It is oftenthe belief of students that the professor makes a course, and in this case, we were honored with two amazingprofessors who created an incredible class.

Whether a student is attending Collin for personalenrichment or to further their academic career, LearningCommunities are an essential in enhancing their collegeexperience. [PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION]

Animation giants offer a peek into theirworld By Shawn Stewart Special Contributor

The Industry Giants 2006:Giant Steps Forwardcomputer graphics, animation and gamingforum at Collin offeredstudents and guests a rare,behind-the-scenes glimpseinto the imaginative worldof digital movie effects andvideo game design, not tomention a sneak preview ofsome of the summer’sbiggest blockbusters.

Industry Giants took place June 10 in the John Anthony Theatreat Spring Creek Campus. Hosted by Collin’s Applied GraphicsDesign Technology department and the regional animators’ guild,A Bunch of Short Guys, Industry Giants included presentationsby a distinctive lineup of speakers working in all areas ofanimation and special effects for film, television and games.Geeks ruled the day.

The audience at the John Anthony Theatre was full of self-proclaimed animation, gaming, film and computer nuts--myselfincluded. It’s easy to tell fans apart from the “norms,” both by ourcasual dress code, (baseball caps, T-shirts, sneakers, socksoptional) and by the number of acronyms and technical gibberishwe sprinkle into everyday speech: Maya, MMORPGs, FACS,“parenting,” “ambient occlusion pass,” “mo-cap,” etc.

An impressive amount of technology was brought to bear on theforum. The Short Guys brought with them three cameras and adigital switcher to record the day’s events.

Christian Lorenz Scheurer – Visual Storytelling and UniverseCreation Conceptual Art Director

Scheurer offered a unique glimpse into the thought processesbehind creating conceptual art for feature films "The FifthElement," "Titanic" and "The Matrix," and video games like "FinalFantasy," "Spore" and "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King."Scheurer is one of many team members whose work falls intothe realm of conceptual art or pre-visualization, part of the pre-production process for most movies and video games.

He’s a graphic artist by trade, one who likes to dream upfantastic people, places and things. The more freedom he isgiven, the more outlandish his designs are. His work resemblesthat of H.R. Geiger ("Alien").

“All my pictures tell a story,” he said. “I always leave the viewerwanting to know more about the universe I’ve created.”

That’s why his concept art always has people in it, boarding atrain or walking around, involved in some action... low-techgliders mixed with high-tech cities. He calls this adding “drama”to a picture--the element of the unknown, the curious. On thevideo game "Final Fantasy IX," Scheurer moved from painting oncanvas to painting directly into Photoshop, to save time andmoney.

“It was liberating,” he said.

Now, instead of having just one flat canvas, he could have “layerupon layer upon layer of images,” he said, which led him toconclude: “It’s great if you get paid on the job to learn new tools."

Pointing to one drawing, he added: “I could never have createdthat with markers and wash.”

Scheurer believes very strongly in creating back stories for all ofhis people, places and things. In fantasy, he says, this isparticularly important, to help the audience relate to an otherwisealien environment. For example, he proposes that the movieAlien was based entirely on the lifecycle of the creature. There isthe “facehugger” parent, the embryo alien implant, the violent“birthing” scene, and finally the fully grown alien terrorizing thespaceship.

“If the director [Ridley Scott] had told Geiger to avoid all of thishistory of the alien itself,” he said, “then there would have beenno story.”

Scheurer created matte paintings of the NYC library buried underhundreds of feet of snow and concept drawings of the “supercell”hurricane for the motion picture "The Day After Tomorrow." Hemade cutaways of the electromagnetic spaceships for "TheMatrix" and concept drawings of the historic ocean liner breakingapart for "Titanic."

Creating matte paintings is very much “a Zen-like experience,”he said. Since the artist is painting environmental landscapes, with lots of repetitions elements, the artist has to repeat tohimself, “stone stone stone, rock rock rock, sky sky sky,” whilepainting. He told graphic artists in the audience to alwaysquestion why something has to be the way it is, even whenquestioning the producer, the one signing the paychecks.

“They don’t always understand visual arts,” he said.

Why, for example, is it awkward to mix a Japanese building witha European interior? Even the guys who are “on the trigger for$10, $15 million” don’t always understand this. That’s why it’simportant, he said, to occasionally step back from other projects

and create your own material, “your own IP,” he called it.

Copies of his book, "Entropia," a fantasy story told throughstamps, is available at Amazon.com. Examples of his work canbe seen at www.christianlorenzscheurer.com.

Loni Peristere – Zoic Studios – Visual Effects Creation for“Serenity” Peristere is co-founder and creative director of Zoic Studios(www.zoicstudios.com) in Los Angeles. His work includescreating special effects for commercial, episodic and featureanimation projects, like "Battlestar Galactica," "CSI" and "BuffyThe Vampire Slayer."

He received a 2003 Emmy Award for his visual effects work onthe series "Firefly."

Peristere graduated magna cum laude from the University ofMassachusetts in 1995. He won the Paul Tucker Award for hisshort film “Twilight” in 1996. That brought him to the attention ofcompanies in Hollywood.

“You must have a consistent vision of where you’re going andwhat you want to do in this business,” he said. “Otherwise, it’seasy to get off-track and lose your way.”

Though he discussed at length his work as visual effectssupervisor on the film "Serenity," the theme of his presentationwas actually “persistence of vision,” a double-take on the old filmphrase, meaning “the phenomenon by which still images, whenprojected in rapid succession, give the appearance of motion.”

This is what makes movies and TV possible. Peristere redefinethis phrase to mean “keeping a consistent vision” about who youare and where you are going, both in life and in the film industry. In the mid-1990s, through his work at a visual effects company,Peristere met Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy The VampireSlayer." The two became fast friends based on a mutual loveaffair of old movies, including ironically the musical "Seven Bridesfor Seven Brothers." A scene from the movie became inspirationfor a fight sequence in one episode of "Buffy." (In fact, Whedonwas such a fan of old musicals that he created an entire song-and-dance episode of "Buffy" in season six. As comical as itsounds, vampires dancing and singing, the episode is actuallyquite touching.)

The two hit it off so well that Peristere was promoted to visualeffects supervisor on the second season of "Buffy."

“Going to Joss Whedon university for my grad school was thecoolest thing that I could ever have asked for,” he admits.

It took Peristere only a few minutes to use his first Whedon-ism,“uber-photo-reality,” to the delight of all us geeks, whendescribing a special effects shot. In "Buffy," everything is calleduber-this or uber-that, for something extraordinary, like Buffy’sarch-nemesis “the uber-vamp.” During season two, Peristereperfected the technique of “dusting” vampires, or killing them.Dusting was a digital green-screen/morphing technique usedwhenever a vampire, after being staked through the heart, would

fly apart like a cloud of dust. In creating the effect, Peristereadmitted that he was inspired by the 1960’s Hammer Draculamovies. Often in Hammer films, Dracula would die either bysunlight or by staking and dissolve into what looked like a puddleof bubbling, wet, green sand.

In his effect, Peristere took that notion one step further, making itmore visually exciting, by allowing this to happen in the middle ofa fight sequence, on the fly. (This probably also kept the networkcensors happy, by cutting down on the amount of blood in whatwould have otherwise been a bloody TV series.) Dusting becamea "Buffy trademark"--even made its way into pop culturevernacular, “I dusted him,” became a favorite saying, so much sothat the Zoic website states, “[d]usting demons is our specialty.Zoic has proven themselves to be the experts on vampireeffects.”

This is no idle boast. "Buffy" probably did more in its seven-season run to expand the vampire mythos than all the Hammerfilms combined. The series is a lovely example of pre-millennialparanoia.

“We have an ethical responsibility to create stories which livebeyond our lifetimes,” said Peristere, who not surprisingly was aliterature major in college and frequently references Homer andAristotle.

“We must create stories that last.”

As a result, Peristere’s company, Zoic, won several awards forthe series: nominated for outstanding special visual effects for aseries, 2003 Primetime Emmy Awards; and winner foroutstanding visual effects in a television series 2003 VESAwards. The company created many other digital effects for theshow: magic potions, disintegrating demons, giant caverns andthe “flat out destruction of Sunnydale” in the final episode.Peristere went on to serve as visual effects supervisor andsecond unit director for the movie "Serenity," another film by JossWhedon, based on the TV series "Firefly." Over the past nineyears, their working relationship progressed to the point wherethe "Buffy" scribe will often write into his script, “Spaceship fliesthrough space. (Loni will come up with something really coolhere!)”

Undoubtedly, Peristere hopes to work on the next Whedonproject, the one about “that chick with bracelets,” as he called it,Wonder Woman. Peristere believes that the future of storytellingis in “the birth of the interactive narrative as a very realistic wayof life. The technology that we are developing today in videogames is going to allow us in the very near future to create veryrealistic worlds, people, places, things. It will enable us to haveworld-creation become the normal part of entertainment.” Let’shope there’s still room for traditional narratives like "Buffy."

T. Dan Hofstedt – Sony Pictures Imageworks – Animating“Monster House” Hofstedt is animation supervisor with Sony Pictures Imageworks(www.sonypictures.com/imageworks/company/bios/thofstedt.html).Hofstedt discussed his work on the animated “performancecapture” feature "Monster House," due for release July 21.

Collin News: Animation giants offer a peek into their world

Hofstedt is a wonderful and gifted animator. His gift forcaricaturing both likeness and action of a character has servedhim well over a 21 year career in feature film animation. (Triviaquestion: His first job after graduating from Cal Arts, the Disneyfarm school, was as an animator on the Emmy Award-winningTV series, The Smurfs.) And he does wonderful voiceimpressions of his characters as he is giving presentations.

He is a delightful presenter. Hofstedt is a 12-year veteran of WaltDisney Feature Animation. "The Lion King," "Aladdin" and"Pocahontas" are among his credits. Hofstedt served as seniorcharacter animator on The" Polar Express" from Director RobertZemeckis. "The Polar Express" was the first film to employImagemotion™, the motion capture system developed byImageworks. In regards to "The Polar Express," I have to admitnot being overly impressed with the technology originally.

Unfortunately, the few scenes I saw from "Monster House,"though beautifully animated and full of character, did not changemy mind about the underlying technology, Imagemotion™."Monster House" makes extensive use of “performance capture,”a new digital motion-captured technique in which actors arecovered with luminescent dots and those dots are then recordedby the computer to create a representative wireframe image ofthe character’s body and facial movements.

Hofstedt called this a “rig.” Recording broad gestures--walking,standing, sitting--go back to "Titanic," 10 years prior, butrecording facial gestures is relatively new. The computer uses analgorithm, called the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) toestimate emotions on the live-action actors and to transposethose onto the animated characters. (By comparison, in moretraditional a keyframe animation, every nth frame is actuallydrawn by hand and then filled in by other artists who are knownas “inbetweeners.”)

One lovely example of keyframe animation is the “monsterhouse” itself, which is personified as a character in the movie, eating people and spitting them out. The monster house isanimated as a traditional character, with facial features: windowsfor eyes, door for a mouth. The full resolution, or wireframe, “rig”for the house included 40,000 controls which could beindividually manipulated to give the house character. Everyshingle, porch board, and slat of siding could be tweaked andtorqued to make the house bristle, frown, talk and even walk. It’sa lovely piece of animation that required no motion capturewhatsoever.

By contrast, Imagemotion™, performance capture, or motion-capture as it is still called (“mo-cap”) is supposed to imbibe theanimated character with movements which are more natural thancan be otherwise achieved by traditional, hand-drawn animation.

Hofstedt calls tracing a “legitimate tool for animators,” going backto the loose interpretations of the early Disney animations to themore tightly “rotoscoped” movies, like "Heavy Metal." Historically, that’s correct. But after seeing several scenes of "MonsterHouse" at the presentation, I’m not sold. I’m not convincedmotion capture added much natural movement to the final look of

Page 17: Learning Communities: A new classroom experience College Links · Learning Communities: A new classroom experience By Cody Lynch Special Contributor Learning Communities was a foreign

the characters in this movie. The characters in "Monster House"are so stylized and exaggerated, caricatures basically, thattraditional keyframe animation would have sufficed.

Hofstedt admitted that his animation team would simply use theactors facial motion data “as a reference point,” and wouldconstantly accentuate movements, gestures and words to makethem more dramatic or emphatic. That begs the question: Whyuse a motion capture at all? Unless the movie is aiming forphoto-realism, like "The Polar Express," motion capture seems awaste of the time and talents of actors like Steve Buscemi andJason Lee, who “play” two characters in "Monster House."

Or better yet, James Cameron’s "Avatar," which may include thefirst fully C.G. character that is indistinguishable from a realhuman being. Watch for a tricky bit of casting on this one.

Let’s hope that Director Robert Zemeckis can make better use ofthis technology in his upcoming, photo-realistic “performancecapture” movie version of "Beowulf."

Scott Peterson - Digital Anvil – Designing for Tomorrow’sGame Platforms Game Designer Peterson, with Digital Anvil/Microsoft Game Studios, gave arather technical presentation on game console improvements andhow designers are using increased power to create more visuallycompelling game environments. Peterson counts "Freelancer,""Brute Force" and "Enwor" are among his game credits and"Spawn," "The Nutty Professor" and "Spy Kids" among his filmcredentials.

DNA Productions – "The Ant Bully" Dallas-based DNA Productions ("Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius")discussed their production and development work on theanimated feature "The Ant Bully," to be released this summer instandard and IMAX versions. The animation was impressive, asone would expect from the makers of Jimmy Neutron, but thereal key lies in the story. The original children’s illustrated book, though imaginative, got less than stellar reviews onAmazon.com. “With the current popularity of the animatedmovies 'Antz' and 'A Bug's Life,' this title is timed just right forsuccess,” writes one reviewer of the original, “but the book fallsshort.”

Adapting 10-page children’s book into a 90-minute feature film isalways daunting... so much story must be added. If anyone is upto it, DNA is. You can find their website at www.dnahelix.com.

Where have you worked in the past and what was yourtitle there? I served as a Presbyterian minister for about five years inNorth and South Carolina before returning to school. WhileI was a student at SMU, I was a co-op at RockwellInternational and then worked at Rockwell as an engineer. After Rockwell, I worked as an RF Engineer at ScientificCommunication and as a Senior Electronic SystemsEngineer at E-Systems in Greenville. From E-Systems, Iwent into teaching, first as a chemistry and physics teacherat Community High School in Nevada, Texas, and nowhere at the college.

What book are you currently reading and what is yourfavorite book of all time? Currently, I am reading The Nag Hammadi Library. It is acollection of Gnostic writings found in a cave in Egypt inthe 1940s, which I am reading for a Sunday school class Iteach. My favorite book of all time is The Sound and theFury by William Faulkner. It is one of the few books I haveread more than once.

In your profession/area of study/discipline, who is yourforemost influence and why? Probably my most important influence has been theprofessors I had in my discipline. I regularly find myselfquoting them in class -- perhaps, hoping that I can havethe same kind of influence on my students.

How long have you taught at the college? I have been here 8 ½ years.

What do you like about Collin County CommunityCollege? I particularly like the atmosphere that is conducive to thefree exchange of ideas. I am interested in a great manythings, some related to the things I teach and some related

to other parts of my life. At the college, there arecolleagues I can learn much from on just about any topic.

What is your funniest classroom story? I once made up a ghost story about how University Hall atPreston Ridge is haunted for Halloween. When I told myclasses the story, I made a point of telling them I made itup. Then when I finished the story, one of my studentssaid very convincingly “I know what you mean. I haveheard that same noise.”

If you could lunch with three people (dead/alive,past/present, etc.) who would it be? I would invite Pythagoras, Rene Descartes and Sir IsaacNewton. These are heroes of mine that I talk about inclass. If there was more room at the table, I would also liketo include Galileo, Martin Luther and Eratosthenes ofAlexandria. Wow, the table talk around that table! [PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION]

Where Are They Now: Tammie Williams Between students transferring or graduating at a college, people can lose contact with professors, their peers andtheir alma mater. This has not really been a problem forTammie Williams.

The 45-year-old Frisco resident earned two Associate ofApplied Science degrees in child development educatorand child development administrator in 1998.

In 2000, she opened Apple Creek Preschool in Allen andone in Frisco in May 2004.

She oversees curriculum, teachers, finances, administrationand training inside and outsidethe school. More importantly, shekeeps in close contact with childdevelopment program directorElaine Boski-Wilkison, and shekeeps even closer contact withCollin’s child developmentstudents.

Williams – affectionately knownas "Miss Tammie" to the childrenin her preschools – currentlyemploys six Collin graduates andhas five current employees in the child developmentprogram. For those employees without an early childhooddevelopment degree, Williams will pay for books and tuitionto earn one at Collin.

“Collin has a great early childhood development programand if they did not, I would not have gone there because Iknew that is what I wanted to do,” Williams said. “I havetalked to a lot of people in the field and the quality andcaliber of Collin’s program is phenomenal. The philosophythat I brought to this school came from the philosophy atCollin. It put me in the position to expect the best inmyself. Both my schools are accredited by the NationalAssociation for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).I follow the mold and pattern of the lab school (at theSpring Creek and Central Park campuses). That is wheremy training came from. I believed it and accepted thephilosophy they have and incorporated it into mybusiness.”

Williams’ philosophy is reflected in her preschools’ role inpreparing children for elementary school. The Apple CreekPreschools are designed for stay-at-home mothers and

Children ranging in ages from 2 to 5 years are primed forpublic school through challenging and fun curricula andsocial settings that prepare the child for interaction withfellow students and teachers. Apple Creek Preschool is nota daycare and is more like a public school.

“Our goal is to have the child prepared to enter the publicschools when they are ready,” Williams said. “I felt therewas a real need for a quality preschool program that wasnot a daycare.”

Williams opened the Apple Valley Schoolhouse in 1987 asa means to not only caring for her own children, but alsoproviding a warm and caring destination for others whowanted the same environment for their children. Years ofremodeling her house and playing the role of janitor, teacher, administrator, accountant, maintenance andmother, she finally opened the Apple Creek Preschool inAllen – inside a stand-alone building.

Divorced and seeking a better education, Williams enrolledat Collin as a “displaced homemaker,” and thus herphilosophy behind child development sprang forth like thefountains at Versaille.

“At the time, you had your choice of a play group at achurch or a daycare, and there was nothing in between,”Williams said. “My business grew very fast and I ended upbuilding an addition to my home. I had 60 students andthree employees before I left my house. When I openedthe first Allen school, enrollment jumped to 250 studentsand 20 employees.”

After she moved to Frisco, Williams was “pressured tobuild a second school” and did so, but she states that thiswill be the last. Eventually, she wants to teach elementaryage children. No matter what lay ahead for Williams, shealways wants to stay connected to the community.

“I love to learn,” Williams said. “I love education, and I wantto continue to grow in my field and become part of thecommunity and make connections.” [PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION]

Book Review -- James Baldwin When James Baldwin – America’s emminent AfricanAmerican writer – published “Go Tell It On The Mountain”in 1953, he probably didn’t know it would resonate soloudly.

Of course, that is the benchmark of greatness – whensomething gains relevancy through time.

“Go Tell It On The Mountain” is an autobiographical novelon Baldwin’s own familial and spiritual environment whenhe was 14.

Given the name John Grimes, the Baldwin characterstruggles with his worldly wants and homosexualtendencies among a family and community that equatesanything not associated with Jesus and God to be sinful.

Baldwin uses the religious themes to not only sketch thestate of mind of African American culture in the early 20thcentury, but to also expose the hypocrisy and moralrighteousness keeping many in shackles. The fine linebetween fundamentalism and fanaticism can be as blurryas it was then and is now.

Elisha and Ella Mae, two young parishioners of John’sHarlem church are brought before the congregation fortaking walks and holding hands.

This standard to which John and his brother Royal fail toreach is set by their evangelist father, Gabriel, who beforeembracing religion, found solace in drinking and membersof the opposite sex.

Although God forgives of one’s transgressions, humanmemories rarely forget, and that’s the crux of Baldwin’snovel. Most of the story is based on Gabriel, his sisterFlorence and his wife Elizabeth and the trepidations theyfaced in their younger days.

Gabriel’s hypocrisy and woeful past never really leave himbe, despite his faith.

“‘Like my aunt used to say,”’ Elizabeth said, smiling timidly,“‘she used to say, folks sure better not do in the dark whatthey’s scared to look at in the light’,” Baldwin wrote.

Baldwin’s strength is his characters and strong commandof a refreshing narrative that penciled in the character’stormented souls, undying pasts and unrelenting fears. Thestrongest caricatures are Baldwin’s women: Florence,

Elizabeth, Deborah, Praying Mother Washington, SisterMcCandless and Sister Price. Beautifully strong womanwho prove to be the true protangonists – spirituallyrighteous, right and compassionate, the women prove tobe the men’s backbone and the moral compasses whichthe men too often ignore.

Baldwin tackled race, religion and sexual orientation withlittle regard to the suburban mentality affecting the UnitedStates in the 1950s all the while teaching a lesson that canbe of great consequence today.

Real People, Real Life, Real Knowledge By Dr. John Glass Special Contributor

As a sociologist charged with the responsibility oftransmitting knowledge about the social world that weinhabit, I am always cautious about ensuring that mystudents receive accurate, current, and relevantinformation.

This is especially necessary when it comes to forgingunderstandings about cultures other than our own. Why?Because there are always opportunities to fomentmisunderstandings and derision when describing a groupof people in general and especially when that group“differs” from one’s own familiar group in particular.

In sociology, we attempt to counter these prejudicialtendencies by relying on empirical data collected throughstandard social scientific methods. Occasionally, by relyingon these types of data however, we run the risk ofengaging in an “ecological fallacy.” This is defined as “…awidely recognized error in the interpretation of statisticaldata, whereby inferences about the nature of individualsare based solely upon aggregate statistics collected for thegroup to which those individuals belong (Wikipedia, 2006).”

Simply put, sometimes we make the mistake of thinkingthat when we know about the general characteristics of asocial group, we inherently also know about all of theindividual members of that group. Or, to put it evensimpler, an ecological fallacy is essentially, “enlightened”stereotyping. With the assistance of a Collin studentassociation, I recently found an effective way to overcomethis, however.

This past semester, I taught a course (SOCI 2319) titled,“Minority Studies,” which explored the current experiencesand past histories of various ethnic and racial groups in theUnited States. To supplement my lectures, group projects,in-class assignments, and videos, I used a standardsociological text on ethnic and racial groups. One of the“dangers” in using such a text is precisely that which Imention above – inadvertently creating and engaging inecological fallacies. To counter this when studying themodule on Arab-Americans, I enlisted the aid of the CollinMiddle Eastern Student Association (MESA). Specifically, Iasked about having a member of MESA come and speakto my class about his or her life as an Arab-American.

Well, MESA (through the mediation of Tatiana Shehadeh,Collin International Student Advisor) did that and more. Iand my students were treated to a MESA member and twoArab-American members of our local community. Luai,Hiba, and Dina (their first names) graciously talked aboutmarriage customs in Kuwait, Palestine, and Syria, somedifferences in gendered behavior in Arab countries, and theimportance of providing an Arabic socio-historical contextfor their children here in the United States.

They also answered our questions, asked some questionsof us, and joked with us about life in this day and age ofglobal “multiculturalism.” It was a fascinating hour andfifteen minutes that could easily have been extended foranother hour and fifteen minutes. What my studentsreceived was an experience of real people, talking abouttheir real lives, exchanging real knowledge about what itmeans to be human in 21st century America and to befrom another country/culture.

No stereotyping, “enlightened” or otherwise. By having atangible experience of alleged “difference,” my studentswere able to understand the commonalities that all peopleshare, despite cultural backgrounds or current, culturalforegrounds.

Collin is giving students a different route toward anassociate’s degree.

Starting the fall of 2006, the college will offer the Mexican-American Field of Study Program. The field of study totals18 hours of core classes with a focus on Mexican-American culture.

This fall, five courses will be offered including English, humanities, history, government and Spanish. The courses, are fully transferable to most Texas universities like mostcourses at Collin.

Dr. Lisa Roy-Davis, professor of English who specializes inLatino and Latina literature, was named the director of theMexican-American Field of Study Program Task Force. The task force has been working on publicity andprogramming for the new field of study.

“We have an opportunity to attract people from thecommunity and have a program that appeals to them,”Roy-Davis said of the field of study. “I think we are offeringa degree program that is exciting as well as accessible andaffordable."

The Mexican-American Field of Study Program is the resultof a Texas bill that requires community college districtswith a substantial or growing Mexican-American populationto create a corresponding program with the approval of theTexas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Collin’s enrollment mirrors the growth of the Hispanicpopulation of the area. About 10 percent of the college’senrollment is Hispanic.

“The program is constructed for several of our divisions, and it is really intended to appeal to a broad section ofstudents interested in Mexican-American literature, politics, history and art,” Gerry Perkus, interim dean of theCommunications and Humanities Division, said. “We are

hopeful the enrollment will be significant because we aremeeting a need that has never been addressed. We havehad Mexican-American curriculum of this kind in bits andpieces but never in a fully articulated program.”

The program will prepare students for careers in education, business, journalism, public service, law, criminology, socialwork, psychology, urban affairs and foreign affairs.

Perkus also cited the avenues for events and programsthroughout the year celebrating the Mexican-American andHispanic cultures instead of just during Hispanic HeritageMonth. Also, Perkus and Roy-Davis want to incorporate allthe campuses and other programs – such as LearningCommunities – into the fold.

“Our hope, eventually, is that we will be able to haveLearning Communities classes within the Mexican-American Field of Study,” Perkus said. “It lends itself to theLearning Communities and we want to develop those kindsof classes in themes related to Mexican-American studies.

“It is not a closed system. The idea is this is where we willbe starting, a firm base on which to build a great program.”

Transfer Tip -- Shop Around Sometimes you make decisions about where to attendcollege without looking at all the options.

Of course, the first priority as a student is to find a collegethat offers the degree program you want and has the otherqualities you prefer in a school.

These qualities may include some of the following:academic reputation, student population, public or private, admission requirements for transfer students, etc.

As a transfer student, you may also want to look for auniversity or college that has a strong transfer relationshipwith Collin. Similar programs at different universities maybe structured very differently.

Shopping around can help you find a program and a schoolthat are most compatible with your needs.

“We are ecstatic about our finishes,” Berryman said. “Thefocal point is at the end of the year, and it is good to havesophomores that have played in the national tournament. That’s what the best teams do and we want to be one ofthe best teams.”

For the fifth straight year, the division I and III NationalJunior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’stournament was held at Collin.

“We have a lot of people who help us – whether it’sadministration or facilities – and it is a pleasure to have atournament of this magnitude and to perform so well,”Berryman said.

Summertime means growth, job searchopportunities By Amy LenhartCareer Counselor

For many, summertime means time for growth. Take, forexample, the recent graduate. Often, the recent graduateis focused on looking for a job, trying to adjust to life aftercollege and trying to “settle in” to a new place.

Being able to plan for these adjustments can be achallenge if you don’t have the right tools to assist you. So,how do you learn to juggle these responsibilities?

First, develop a plan. Devote as much time as possible tofinding a job, and schedule time during the week to plotyour job search. Your job search will then be starting inthe right direction.

“Finding a job is a job,” so making sure that you treat yourjob search this way is crucial.

Second, make sure that you are not relying on just onesource for your job search. For example, do not just relyon looking at the classifieds in the newspaper. Most of thetime when people get a job, it is through networking. Anestimated 80 percent of jobs are found this way. Try to goto local job networking groups in the area to help with this.

Third, stop by Career Services and Co-op on each campusto assist you with your job search. Also, note the followingjob search and interviewing workshops offered to you thissummer through our Professional Development SeminarSchedule.

These workshops are free and open to the public.· " Anger and Rage, Aggressiveness and

Assertiveness" will be from 3-5 p.m.,Thursday, July 6, at the Spring CreekCampus, Room G212. This workshopexplores techniques on handling angerand other emotions in the workplace.Presented by Amy Lenhart, careercounselor at Collin Career Services.

· “Sales Techniques to Get the Job YouWant” is scheduled from 6-8 p.m.,Thursday, July 13, at the Courtyard Centerfor Professional and Economic
