Dr. Spock Dr. Benjamin Spock was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on May 2, 1903.
Throughout the years, Dr. Spock became a very well known and completely trusted pediatrician and best selling author on child rearing practices. He was visionary with his revolutionary idea that parenting could be fun. He spent his life researching and reporting on current life structures and events. In more recent years, he reported on such social issues as daycare, working parents, and single parenthood. He remained a constant advocate for children up until his death in 1998.

May 7 th marks the anniversary that the Pulitzer Prize was established. Joseph Pulitzer was an outstanding 19 th century American journalist. Skillful in his publications, he advocated honesty in government evident in his circulation. Truly a visionary, Joseph Pulitzer reshaped newspaper journalism. In addition to his lasting influence on journalism, he was the first to suggest journalism training occur on a university level specifically in a school devoted to journalism. Sock Day May 8 th marks Sock Day. Socks as we know today help keep feet warm as well as
serve as a clothing accessory. The term sock as we say and spell today is derived from several terms and languages. Sock comes from the Latin term soccus, the Old English word socc and the Middle English term socke. Sock like shoes of early civilization led to new developments throughout the years. It was in 1939 that synthetic fibers were introduced in New York’s World’s Fair. The introduction of nylon stockings in 1940 resulted in more than 72,000 pairs being sold on the first day, ultimately causing a collapse of the Japanese silk market.

worldwide. Nurses make delicate and important contributions each day to society that help people heal from various maladies. Since 1965, the International Council of Nurses has recognized and celebrated this day, yet only in 1974 was the decision made to celebrate each year on May 12 th . May 12 th was selected in honor of the birth of Florence Nightingale (18201910), often thought of as the founder of nursing as known today.

prices today. The tulip is very often associated with the Netherlands yet, this flower is not a native Dutch blossom! Tulips arrived in the Netherlands in about 1953 from another part of the planet. Europeans first noted this flower in Turkey. Today, tulips continue to be among the largest sellers throughout the world! More than 4,000 identified varieties exist. Lewis and Clark
May 14 th marks the beginning of the Lewis and clark Expedition in the year 1804. Meriwether Lewis and william Clark started this journey with a directive from President Jefferson to search for what was termed the Northwest Passage! really a direct water route from sea to sea. Throughout their twoyear journey, they draw maps, collected plant, animal, bird, and fish samples, and study the culture and lifestyles of Native Americans who inhabited the land? Never finding the Northwest passage, due to its nonexistence, they did rovide new knowledge not yet known regarding all the life samples collected and observations made.

Lyman Frank Baum Author Lyman Frank Baum was born on May 15, 1856 in the city Chittennago, New York.
Most well known for The Wizard of Oz, L.F. Baum had an early start in the literary world starting up a magazine and several newspapers as a youngster and teen. In his later teens, interest in theater led his wealthy father to offer several New York and Pennsylvania theaters to him to manage. Eventually pairing up with illustrator William Wallace Denslow, L.F. Baum produced several best sellers, among them “ The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. As Baum continued to write the Oz series, he used several pen names. Many children and adults alike continue to enjoy one of Baum’s most beloved stories, “The Wizard of Oz”.

The Nickel It was on May 16, 1866 that the very first nickel was minted in the United
States. Known more affectionately as the “Shield Nickel”, this five cent coin was designed by James B. Longacre. The nickel has a monetary value of five cents. Tap Dance The New York City neighborhood of Five Points set the beginnings of tap
dance in about 1830. Many different traditional dances of Irish, English, Scottish, and African decent influenced the moves of tap. As immigrants from these cultures began to live and work together, they would spend free time dancing and demonstrating their best dancing moves. As these dances fused, a new style of dancing, called Tap, was born. It wasn’t until about 1900 and up until 1955 that tap really flourished and became very visible in Vaudeville and Broadway.

National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Week National attention is given each May in the United States to asthma and allergies. The
Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) requests that May be designated as this important event from the President of the United States.
Asthma is a lung condition that is characterized by difficulty with breathing. Narrowed or obstructed airways, due to irritation, make breathing very difficult.
Allergies occur when the body is reacting to what it views as a harmful substance, even when it may not be. What results is the body’s immune system reacting with ferocity greater than needed. Often what happens then are symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, and coughing occur.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark started this journey with a directive from President Jefferson to search for what was termed the Northwest Passage, really a direct water route from sea to sea. Page 19 The Ringling Brother’s Circus opened
on May 19, 1884, founded by five Ringling brothers. Starting out as a humble wagon show that traveled from place to place, good business and management decisions led to their acquisition of their circus competitors! In 1907, the brothers bought the Barnum & Bailey Circus and ultimately merged the two together in 1919. By 1930, they were the largest circus act that existed!

Also known for his invention of the electric telegraph, he is often more remembered for the Morse Code he developed verse the machine that allowed its operation.
