TheTEFLCert.Courseintroducesparticipantsto,andgivespracticein,modernteachingmethods. Themain content of the course focuses onmethods and techniques to helplanguage learners communicate (speak, listen, read and write) using real-life, usefullanguage. 2 DoIneedtodobothcourses?

No. Youmust do a TEFL Cert. Course accredited by te ELT Council (formerly the EFLMonitoring Board) of the Dept. of Education in order to get a permit to teach EFL inMalta. If you have a Cambridge ESOL CELTA or a Trinity Cert. TESOL (or the higherDiploma of both Cambridge and Trinity) you are exempted fromdoing aMaltese TEFLCert.Course. IfyouhaveanA-LevelpassinEnglish(GradesA-Carepassgrades)youdonothavetodotheTELTExam.ProspectiveteacherswhohaveanA-LevelinEnglishsometimesenrolonTELT Exam preparation courses in order to feel more confident when teaching EFLgrammar.YoudonothavetodoaTELTExamcourseinordertodotheexamination,butyoumustpasstheexaminationifyoudonothaveanA-LevelinEnglish.

The TELT Examination is designed to ensure that candidates have an appropriateknowledge of English grammar and phonology (which theywill needwhen they teachEFL)andthattheirowncompetenceinwrittenandspokenEnglishissufficientlyhightoenablethemtoteachEnglishwithconfidence.Ifcandidatesdonotsatisfythesetwomainrequirements,theywillfinditdifficulttopasstheTELTexamination.Asarule-of-thumbguide,ifyourlevelofEnglishisstrongenoughfor you to be confident about passing an A-level in English (barring the literaturecomponent),itshouldbestrongenoughtoenableyoutopasstheTELTExam(aslongasyourexplicitknowledgeofTEFLgrammarandphonologyisbroughtuptoscratch).

5 DoIneedtobuyanybooksforeithercourse?

TEFLTeacherTrainingCourses(TEFLInductionCourses)

AlanMarshdesignsand leadsprofessionalTEFLTeacherTrainingCourses (alsoknownasTEFLCert.Courses).ThesecoursesareheldinconjunctionwithvariouslanguageschoolsinMaltaandeachcourseisaccreditedandapprovedbytheELTCouncil(formerlytheEFLMonitoringBoard)oftheMinistryofEducationinMaltaanddevelopedintermsofLegalNotice60/96and221/15.These courses are recognised as an employment requirement (see below) by ALL languageschools in Malta and Gozo, irrespective of where they are actually held. They are also

recognised inmany language schools around theworld foremploymentpurposes in countrieswhere no official national TEFL qualification exists (Malta is one of a very small number ofcountries which has such a national qualification for employment in Language Schools). Pastparticipants on Alan’s courses are presently working in various European countries, in SouthAmericaandinAsia.
