Measurement toolsEngineers use a vast range of instruments to perform their measurements. e.g rulers, stop watches, microscopes etc.

Measuring Instruments - Vernier Calipers

The Vernier Caliper is a precision instrument that can be used to measure internal and external distances extremely accurately.

Types

Manual - Measurements are interpreted from the scale by the user.Dial - Much easier to use and read compared to manual.Digital - It has an LCD digital display on which the reading appears.

Measuring Instruments – Screw GaugeMicrometer screw-gauge is an instrument used for measuring small dimensions with acute precision. Screw gauge is used for dimensions smaller than those measured by vernier calipers such as the diameter of a thin wire or the thickness of a sheet of metal.

Measuring Instruments – Filler GaugeA feeler gauge is a tool used to measure gap widths. Feeler gauges are mostly used in engineering to measure the clearance between two parts.

Hand tools

A hand tool is any tool that is not a power tool – that is, one powered by hand (manual labour) rather than by an engine.

e.g Carving tools, hammer, files etc.

Lets look at some of those hand tools….


Hand tools – Screw drivers

A screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, for turning (driving or removing) screws.

A typical simple screwdriver has a handle and a shaft, and a tip that the user inserts into the screw head to turn it.

Files are cutting tools for removing metal from surface.

Needle files are small files that are used in applications where the surface finish takes priority over metal removal rates and they are most suited for smaller work pieces.

Carving tools are used to shape something from a material by scraping away portions of that material.

Hand tools – Spanner

Spanner (Wrench) is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects—usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts—or keep them from turning.

Types

Open ended : U-shaped opening that grips two opposite faces of the bolt or nut.

Ring type : enclosed opening that grips the faces of the bolt or nut.

A power tool is a tool that is actuated by an additional power source and mechanism other than the solely manual labour used with hand tools.

Power tools – Hand Drill Machine

A drill is a tool fitted with a cutting tool attachment or driving tool attachment, usually a drill bit or driver bit, used for boring holes in various materials. The attachment is gripped by a chuck at one end of the drill and rotated while pressed against the target material.
