Meetings about the long-term NHS planPeople with a learning disability and people with autism are now listed as important priorities for the NHS plan for the next 10 years.

NHS England is meeting with Learning Disability England to talk about what needs to be in the plan.

Public health and people with learning disabilities: national evidence for local action conference11 October 2018

Birmingham

This conference is about better health for people with learning disabilities.

It will look at:

JJ what public health evidence is availableJJ where there are gapsJJ what is needed to support local systems

There will be speeches from Public Health England, NHS England and a self-advocacy network.

There will be 4 workshops in the afternoon looking at information on the health and care of people with a learning disability.

The day will end with a conversation about how Public Health England should help local systems bring about better health for people with a learning disability.

Health Education England have funded the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD), to help London to develop its Learning Disability Community of Practice.

Skills for Care’s individual employer funding now openPeople who employ their own care and support using a direct payment or their own money (also known as individual employers), can apply for funding.

The money can pay to develop their own skills as an employer and their personal assistants (PAs).

It can pay for training, travel costs or of hiring a replacement PA.

Funding closes on 28 February 2019

Any training must start before 31 March 2019.

New videos on positive behaviour support (PBS)PBS is a person-centred way of supporting people who display behaviours which challenge.

Social care workers need the right skills and knowledge to use this approach. We can help.

Read how PBS can help you deliver high quality support for people who display behaviour that challenges.

Skills for Care has also spoken to Eldertree Lodge about how PBS has meant fewer incidents of behaviours which challenge.

It has also led to better health and wellbeing.

So what, what next? ProjectThis project was set up by the Transforming Care empowerment steering group.

It looks at ways of supporting people with a learning disability or autism who have left hospital.

It explores their skills and passions to find ways how they can use these in their local communities.

Trainee Nursing Associates expansion in Learning Disability servicesFewer people are being recruited to Learning Disability Nursing.

The role of Nursing Associate has been introduced to help deliver nursing care across services.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council will regulate this role.

The first Trainee Nursing Associates qualify in December 2018.

During their training, Nursing Associates develop knowledge and skills across the four fields of nursing.

This enables them to work in health and care settings.

An enhanced training grant is being offer to Trainee Nursing Associates working at least half of their practice time in an NHS Learning Disability service.

People taking part need to start the programme between 1 September until 31 December 2018.

Ordinary Residence guideThe LGA has published their Ordinary Residence guide for local councils.

This guide supports the Transforming Care programme.

It affects how people feel and behave at work.

Skills for Care has updated their ‘Culture for care toolkit’.

It tells you what a workplace culture is, why it is important and how you can develop a positive culture.

Supporting a workforce to work with deaf blind people – reportHealth Education England in the South have supported Southdown housing association to better support deaf blind people.

There is an easy read summary of what they did.
