I. LAUNCH CONCERT BRAHMS AND BEYOND7:30 pm, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2019—THE AUDITORIUM

Featuring Heather Schmidt, piano | Paul Haas conducting

The Launch Concert opens with Arvo Pärt’s hauntingly beautiful Silouan’s Song for Strings, a modern masterpiece by the ‘Baltic Mystic’ composer. Next, Heather Schmidt’s virtuosic tour-de-force for the piano——played by the composer herself——features a high-octane orchestral arrangement. The evening closes with Brahms’ astonishingly powerful First Symphony, the master-work that secured his place as Beethoven’s true successor.

II. POWER CONCERT MAHLER–THE TITAN7:30 pm, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2019—THE AUDITORIUM

Featuring Stéphane Tétreault, cello | Paul Haas conducting

Gustav Mahler famously claimed that his symphonies held the whole of life within them. His First Symphony, nicknamed “The Titan”, is no exception, moving from flowing rivers to joyous dances, hauntingly beautiful spells to breakneck sprints of terror. The ferociously talented members of the TBSO will bring it to life, as well as Shostakovich’s perennially popular Cello Concerto No. 2. As a special opener, Music Director Paul Haas brings us Dream, a sublime, ear-bending piece that blends extreme beauty with sheer excitement.

III. NORDIC CONCERT SIBELIUS SINGS!7:30 pm, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2020—THE AUDITORIUM

Featuring TBSYO | Thomas Cosbey, violin | Paul Haas conducting

We’re speaking to our Northern voice. After wowing TBSO audiences last season, we offer another of Airat Ichmouratov’s pieces: the fiendishly difficult Chamber Symphony No. 4. Next, concertmaster Thomas Cosbey thrills again, with Prokofiev’s lush and sparkling Violin Concerto No. 2. Then TBSYO joins the TBSO for Sibelius’ most well-known work, Finlandia. Then on to Sibelius’ Second Symphony, a compellingly gorgeous portrait of grandeur and human warmth in winter.

6 IV. OUTSIDERS CONCERT SH-SHOSTAKOVICH!7:30 pm, THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2020—THE AUDITORIUM

Featuring Tara-Louise Montour, violin | Paul Haas conducting

Music Director Paul Haas calls George Walker an exciting new discovery. His Lyric for Strings is a lush walk through astonishing beauty. Next, we’re bringing the primal Farewell to the Warriors ——which the TBSO recorded on Variations of a Memory——back to life featuring the original soloist, acclaimed virtuoso Tara- Louise Montour. Then Haas’ music, based on the form of a spiral and once performed on a giant staircase, is the journey from oppression to empowerment. The concert closes with a giant of a work, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, composed during the time he was denounced by the Soviet authorities. His music performed something of a miracle, convincing Stalin and his henchmen that he was no longer subversive at the same time as delivering a powerful and visceral condemnation of Stalin’s regime. A must-see concert, thought-provoking and haunting.

V. EARTH DAY AT 50 THE FOWLER EFFECT7:30 pm, THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 2020—THE AUDITORIUM

Featuring Paul Fowler | Paul Haas conducting

The audience walked in to our Wired Concert last season not knowing what to expect. They left with minds blown. Back by popular demand, Paul Fowler joins Paul Haas to blend swim-mingly beautiful soundscapes into a program featuring some of the best and brightest creative minds in orchestral music today. There is something for everyone in this concert: total darkness, radiant light, extreme dynamics, unparalleled beauty, and a feast of the new compositions that references the old. This is a unique and extraordinary experience you won’t want to miss!
