The Dragon of the Snow Kingdom: A fable

by: Osby, 1st grade

Once upon a time, there was a king of Jujubugs. The king is going to order his servant to find a small dragon. The servant finds a dragon, but it is very fluffy, and also very small. The king says, “you are so fluffy, you could be on a sheep farm.” And with that, the king was turned into ashes by the tiny, fluffy dragon’s fire breath. And the moral of the story is “Don’t judge something just by its looks.”

A Short Storyby: Benjamin, Kindergarten

When I was a baby, when I had cherries, I got juicy juice all over my face. I laughed a lot and I smiled and I had a bib on because I was a baby so I didn’t know how to eat my food. Like I said I didn’t know how to eat.

A Seasonal Storyby: Indie, 1st grade

It is dark. It is early. There are pumpkins in the road. One is carved like a jack-o-lantern in front of an apartment building. Kids walk out of FAO Schwartz wearing costumes that look just like toys. The trees are red, brown, and yellow. Some are unusually green. I walk to the boating house. It smells like fog and flowers. I hear trees swaying. I feel really cold breezes blowing past my face. I feel a little chilly on Halloween morning.

Mystery deepens as more San Francisco Bay birds are found

covered in gooReporter: Jesse DistillerProblem: “A rubber cement-like goo is coating diving duck’s feathers in the San Francisco Bay, and they are freezing to death. Rescue efforts are costing between $7,000-$8,000 a day.”What we can do to help: “1. Volunteer, 2. Send ships letters, warning them to be careful with their oil, and 3. Fundraise for the cause- set up a penny drive.”

Me and My Dad’s Ski Weekby: Clara, 2nd grade

This week I went to a cabin up in the mountains with Kaelia and her little sister. I went skiing and my cheeks turned light pink. It smelled like redwoods. When I touched the icy, cold snow, it felt like a gust of wind swept me off my feet. I went up the ski lift with my dad when I peeked down. The height scared me but I wanted to keep looking at the people doing massive jumps. I said to my dad, “hey dad, do you think I could land those massive jumps?” When the fun was over, my dad pulled me along. When I saw the steep drop, this chilly feeling came over me. I was so scared but, without warning, WOOSH!!! In two seconds, my dad had zig zaged me down the mountain and in a flash, it was over. “Wow”, I said.

Untitled Fictionby: Maera, 5th grade

I sat crouched behind a bush with my dad as we watched my mother shoot beams of fiery magic from her palms. She wasn’t much of a mother, abandoning me and Dad when I was young to go fight for the dark side. In her tattered black dress, deep purple eye shadow and heels covered top to bottom with straps and buckles- she was downright evil. The spells smashed into a large bird, giving it an orange burst of power. The bird then soared up to the top of the lush forest canopy, only to fall to the ground with a thud. It silently shed its shiny black feathers, and with a poof, faded away. In its place lay an unconscious pale figure wearing midnight blue robes. “Liam!” yelled Dad, standing up. He was crazy. Mom would hear him! Who was he talking to? I pulled him back down. “Jade, you don’t understand. She’s trying to kill your brother” he said. “Dad, what are you talking about?” I asked, confused. Confused because I didn’t have a brother. Confused because I had never heard of Liam. And scared too, because my mother must have heard us and was whirling around to face the bush.To be continued…

The Advice Column! Have a problem? Ask our resident expert, Bob the Monkey, for advice. You write us a question, we reply with an answer!

Dear Bob the Monkey:

1. I woke up this morning and my hair was green. What should I do? Keep it that way, my fur is a

lovely lavendar and it cost me a lot of money to get it that way.

2. My dog has a bit of peanut butter and jelly sandwich in his nose. What should I do? Eat it, when I

lived in the jungle, we used to eat ticks off of each other, so why not PB&J?

3. This morning, my hat was black and now it is pink. Can you help me explain that? It may have

been a color fairy, you are lucky they just turned it pink.

4. Hello, my name is Fluff. You have probably heard of me from the brave tale of Fluff the Magic

Dragon. You may think I have a great life, full of rainbows and cotton candy, but, it is not. I have a huge

problemo! Here it is. ONE OF MY PRECIOUS TEDDY BEARS HAVE BEEN ABDUCTED BY THE EVIL

WITCH OF THE WEST! ACK! WAH! Can you help me? Thanks a million cotton candies, Fluff T.M.D. I am

not sure where she put it, but in case you don’t know, her weakness is water and I would love some of that

cotton candy you are hiding.

5. Hello, my name is Muse the Bunny, and I live far away in a mysterious land of Cerrito Creek.

From across that great expanse I have heard a rumor of your vast intellect ruling the community. I’m

writing this because I have three very serious questions to ask you. 1. Do you like Hubba Bubba

bubble-gum? 2. Can I have your autograph? 3. This is my most important question, it is the most

serious yet, (the others were really serious too). So here it is, do you like pink sparkly unicorns

dancing on rainbows? Arrivederci, Muse the Bunny 1. No, 2. Yes, 3. Of course, one of them is my very

best friend.
