protection system. The lightning current safely deflected by the interception and arrester system is routed to the

ground. The equipotential bonding performs an additional task between the arresters and as an equipotential bon-

Planning an earthing system

� Deep eartherA deep earther is an earther,which is generally integrated ver-tically and deep into the ground.The simplest solution for retrofit-ting a lightning protection system.

� Ring eartherA ring earther is a surfaceearther, which if possible isinstalled as a closed ring ata distance of 1.0 m and 0.5 mdeep into the ground around theexternal foundation of thebuilding. The better, although more expensive, solution for retrofitting a lightning protection system.

� Foundation eartherA foundation earther (acc. to TAB1974 specified for new buildings)is embedded into the concrete foundation of a building. It then also acts as a lightning protec-tion earther, if the lugs required for connecting the arresters pro-trude from the foundation.

The earthing system is part of theexternal lightning protection system,which routes the lightning currentinto the ground where it is to bedistributed. The key criteria for aneven lightning current distributionwithout dangerous surges occurringare form and dimensions.

In accordance with DIN VDE 0185Part 3 (IEC 60305-3) Section 4.4.1,a lower earthing resistance < 10 �is generally recommended. An earthing system can be constructed from one of the threearrangements described below. It is possible to connect different

earthing arrangements, althoughthe risk of corrosion must be takeninto account.Important notice: earthingsystems must be connected tothe equipotential bonding.

Deep eartherA deep earther (arrangement TypeA) is an earther that is generally inte-grated vertically and deep into theground.

As single earthers, a deep earther of9.0 m in length is recommended.This should be installed at a dis-tance of 1.0 m from the foundationof the building. As a minimumdimension (acc. to DIN VDE 0185Part 3 Fig. 2) a length of 2.5 m forvertical installation and 5 m for hori-zontal installation apply for Type Aearthers for lightning protectionclasses III and IV. The required earther lengths may be split intoseveral lengths connected in paral-lel. Depending on the soil condi-tions, deep earthers can be driveninto the ground by hand or by usingsuitable electric, petrol or pneumatichammers.

All deep earthers must be con-nected with a ring earther inside oroutside of the building and with alead to the PAS.

The following materials can beused:

� Rods from galvanised steel Ø 20 mm

� Rods from stainless steel Ø 20 mm

� Pipes from galvanised steel Ø 25 mm (2 mm wall thickness)

� Flat conductors from galvanisedsteel 30 x 3.5 mm

� Flat conductors from stainless steel 30 x 3.5 mm

In potentially corrosive areas, stain-less steel must always be used.Detachable connections in theground must be protected againstcorrosion (plastic corrosion protec-tion strip).

Ring earthers (surface earthers)Outside the building, at least 80% ofthe ring earther´s overall length mustbe in contact with the ground. Itmust be installed as a closed ring ata distance of 1.0 m and a depth of0.5 m around the external founda-tion of the building. A ring earther isan earther according to arrange-ment type B.

Foundation earthersA foundation earther is an eartherthat is embedded into the concretefoundation of a building. It acts asa lightning protection earther if thelugs required for connecting thearresters protrude from the founda-tion. The steel strip is to be attached/ connected to reinforcements at adistance of approx. 3 m. DIN 18014forms the basis for constructingexternal lightning protectionsystems.

Wedge connectors must not beinserted into the ground. In order toachieve a clean insertion, the use ofstrip holders is recommended forthe installation of foundation earthers. The holders must be inserted at a distance of approx. 2 m.

The following materials, amongothers, can be used for foundationearthers:

� Flat conductor galvanised steel 30 x 3.5 mm

� Flat conductor stainless steel 30 x 3.5 mm

� Round conductor copper, Ø 8 mm

� Round conductor Ø 10 mm, galvanised steel

� Round conductor Ø 10 mm, stainless steel

In potentially corrosive areas, stain-less steel should always be used atthe entry and exit points on the con-crete.
