Independence Day is the most important national holiday in the United States. It
commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776,
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which broke the formal ties between the colonies and Britain after
the American Revolution had begun. Canada observes its equivalent of Independence Day,
the establishment of its federal government, on July 1. Now known as Canada Day, this holiday
was previously known as Dominion Day and Confederation Day and commemorates the British North America Act of July 1, 1867,
which gave Canadians home rule. Y The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament.Y In May 1775, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June 1776, admitting that their efforts were hopeless, a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress.Y Although Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, John Adams originally thought it would be celebrated on the second. Here is what he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God.”

Too many seniors are considering giving away their pets or taking them to the shelter. Often the senior is on a limited budget, and it’s getting too difficult to pay for pet food. If you’re in this group, help is available. While there doesn’t seem to be a national network of pet assistance for seniors, small efforts have sprung up across the country. In some places, animal shelters have been taking donations of food and money to help people keep their pets. Call and ask for help. (Many have funds available for veterinary care, too.)Call the Humane Society’s national number (202-452-1100) or go online to www.humanesociety.org. (You can use the computers at the library if you don’t have Internet.)Do a Google search for: pets food assistance. Put in your state to find help in your area. Try this search: pet food pantry. Or this: pets food “need help.” Google also has an online article called “Having trouble affording your pet?” It includes a list of help organizations for every state.
Call your veterinarian’s office and ask if they know of a local help organization. Many big chain pet stores are donating food to organizations on the local level. Call the pet stores in your area and ask if they know of local help organizations or if they donate to any. Call your local food bank. Many are starting to take donations of pet food.Researchers say that having a pet to care for can do wonders for our health. We get more exercise as we throw toys for a cat and get to socialize with others when we take the dog on a walk. Having a pet is good for us.There’s also the little matter of love we share with out pets. Before you give up your pet because of the cost of its food, ask for help.

Tidbits Goes Green on July 4: Even though temperatures might be soaring, most Fourth of July parties don’t get exciting until the evening. So take advantage of the cooler evening weather and throw your party outdoors. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and reduce the energy costs of using indoor facilities.

Thought of the Week“Hope is the feeling you
have that the feeling you have isn’t permanent.”
— Jean Kerr
z It was U.S. President Dwight David Eisenhower who made the following comment: “I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens.”z What we call coffee beans are actually the pits of the coffee beans.z The dew that accumulates on May Day was once thought to have near-miraculous qualities. The mother of a sick child might rub a blanket across the wet grass on May Day morning to coat it with dew, then wrap the child in the blanket. May Day dew gathered from a fennel plant was thought to cure maladies of the eye, and itchy skin was sometimes treated by rubbing it with the dew. Dew from under an oak tree supposedly made a woman beautiful for a year, and dew gathered before sunrise on May Day morning reputedly brought good luck.
z Despite numerous arrests and trials, famed 19th-century outlaw Frank James was never convicted of anything and never went to prison. He died in 1915, at the age of 72, of natural causes.z If you’re like the average American, you laugh 15 times every day.z In Germany, Rice Krispies don’t say “Snap, Crackle, Pop”; they say “Knisper, Knasper, Knusper.”z You may be surprised to learn that fast-food giant McDonald’s has trademarked the following phrases: “Made for You,” “Immunize for Healthy Lives,” “Changing the Face of the World,” “Gospelfest,” “Lifting Kids to a Better Tomorrow” and, perhaps most bizarrely, “Hey, It Could Happen!”z At one time in England, there was a unit of length called a nail. It measured 2.5 inches long.

Know the Signs of a Sick CatBy Sam Mazzotta
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to Frustrated in Philadelphia concerning a cat soiling on the top of her bed. I agree that urinary tract issues could be the problem. Something else to consider is diabetes. I had a cat that suddenly starting urinating on piles of clothes and on top of beds. He also had lost weight. Watching the cat, I saw him “camping out” over the water bowl often, which caused massive clots in the litter and wherever he went.Obsessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, so I took him to the vet, and we are now giving him insulin shots twice a day. Hence, the problem with going outside the box has ceased. — Jeanne M., via e-mailDEAR JEANNE: Thanks! That is definitely another possibility to consider. Cat owners, if at any time your cat shows a change in behavior or begins repeatedly doing undesirable things that it didn’t do before — such as going outside the litter
box, eating or drinking changes, or hissing at seemingly nothing — bring your cat to the veterinarian.Other signs of ill health in a cat include a dirty or matted coat — cats are obsessive about cleaning themselves, so this can be a big sign of a problem — wheezing, drooling or lethargy. And if your cat just doesn’t seem like itself but you can’t pinpoint any clear symptoms, check with the vet anyway. Cats are good at hiding illness; it’s an instinctive survival mechanism.

INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued):Y The signing of the Declaration was not completed until August 1776, but the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence. It was not declared a federal holiday until 1941. Today, it is celebrated in all states and territories of the United States. Y The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.Y The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, four days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Some accounts claim that it was The Liberty Bell sounding from the tower of Independence Hall on that day that summoned citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration, which was given by Colonel John Nixon. Y Within a few years of that first commemoration, the Fourth of July was observed throughout most of the new nation.Y The first two versions of the famous Liberty Bell were defective and had to be recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1846, when, according to legend, it cracked as it was being tolled for the celebration of George Washington’s birthday.Y In 1778, General George Washington marked the Fourth with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the sea, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for
their fellow Americans in Paris, France. Y An elaborate Fourth of July celebration was held in Philadelphia in 1788, following the ratification of the Constitution. Y The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1801.Y The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek, Kansas, and was celebrated by the explorers Lewis and Clark in 1804.Y Several important U.S. projects were started on Independence Day. Work on the Erie Canal in New York State began on July 4, 1817. Construction of the first railroad in the United States, the Baltimore and Ohio, was started on July 4, 1828. July 4 was the date
selected in 1848 for laying the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. Y Two American icons who were instrumental in ensuring the country’s independence passed away on July 4. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day in 1826.Y The patriotic poem “America the Beautiful” was published on July 4, 1895, by Wellesley College professor Katherine Lee Bates.Y The July 4 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan’s opened its flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island, New York.Y Now, every July 4, a group of 20 steely-stomached

Mid-Year Financial checkup
Summer is a good time to do a mid-year financial checkup. Rather than waiting until the end of the year and discovering that you should have made adjustments, take a look at your finances now and see how you’re doing.
TAxES:• Did you have to pay taxes on top of what was deducted from your pay in 2009? Or was too much deducted and you received a refund? The key is to do the math and get as close to your actual taxes due and have that amount taken out during the year. • If you’ve added a baby to your household or if you’ve bought a house and will have a mortgage interest deduction, you can benefit from adding a deduction or two to your W-4 form for your employer. And if a child has grown and gone and is no longer a deduction for you, make an adjustment or you’ll owe at the end of the year.• If you received a big refund for 2009, that’s money you could have used during the year for any number of things, such as extra money to pay down credit cards or putting more cash into savings. Remember: The Internal Revenue Service doesn’t pay you interest on the money it borrows from you during the year. • If you have multiple jobs or got married, your taxes will change. If you lost your job and received accumulated vacation or sick pay, that money is taxable. If you then received unemployment benefits, that money also is taxable. While the last thing you want to do the minute you find a new job is increase the amount of money deducted from your new check, it could keep you from owing taxes next spring. To see if you have the right amount of withholding, check the IRS withholding calculator. Go online to irs.gov and put “withholding calculator” in the search box.
MORE TIPS:• Add up your expenses for the year so far. Look at your annual budget and compare all the categories to see if you’re on track for savings, credit-card payments, clothing, food and utilities.• If you’d planned to pay down loans faster by sending larger payments for mortgage and auto loans, have you done that? Even starting now would help in the long run.

SONOMA, California — Jimmie Johnson got a long-awaited road-course victory, but winning couldn’t have meant as
much to Johnson as second place did to Robby Gordon. As owner of his team, Gordon has struggled. His No. 7 Monster Energy Toyota failed to make the field at Pocono. Prior to the runner-up finish, Gordon’s best showing of the season had been a 14th at Phoenix. He has only three finishes in the top 20.“My team needs a little bit of morale here and there,” said Gordon. “This will boost morale back at the workshop. I will say that we will come to Watkins Glen guns blazing. We’ll get a lot of confidence going into the Glen and spend a bunch of time getting more rear grip. At the end of the day, that’s what we struggled on with Jimmie (Johnson).”What a runner-up finish at Infineon Raceway did for Gordon is solidify his position in the Sprint Cup point standings, meaning that he will have a
guaranteed spot in the next race and, quite probably, several more after that.“On a weekly basis, let’s face it right now, we’re (32nd) in points,” he observed. “It’s hard to build morale.…I think this will build us some momentum. I’m not going to say it’s going to push our guys,
After a second-place finish at Sonoma, Robby Gordon may have some momentum
to carry him for the rest of the season. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)
Robby Gordon Builds Momentumbecause the guys have to get on board. “I believe they’ll have confidence going to Watkins Glen (the other road course, on Aug. 8) that we can actually win that race, so we can build some momentum throughout the summer, and hopefully have some good runs. Gordon, from Orange, Calif., has been a winner in NASCAR, off-road racing and Indy cars. At age 41, he continues to compete in major off-road races. He has three Sprint Cup victories to his credit, the most recent occurring on Aug. 10, 2003, at Watkins Glen.“This is a tough sport,” he said. “I don’t know how to say it. Cup racing, when you’re racing against these teams out here, you’re racing against the best teams in America.“Obviously, Cup racing is where it’s at. We’re fortunate enough to be in it. How do you say it? Sometimes we dog-paddle; sometimes we take a few gulps of water. Other times, you have days like this that you can build momentum on for a little while.”

INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued):individuals line up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan’s on Coney Island for the world hot dog eating championship. At 12 noon exactly, crushed by fans and media, the competitors begin the historic 12-minute contest.Y Several places in the United States have “independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents. Other places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these. There is one place named “patriot,” Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202.Y What could be more fitting than spending July 4 in a place called “America”? There are several such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents.Y On July 1, 1867, under the terms of the British North America Act, Canada East (Quebec), Canada West (Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick united to become the Dominion of Canada. Y Canada Day became a statute in 1879 but was
initially called Dominion Day. There are not any records of early celebrations of Canada (Dominion) Day, except for two years. In 1917, it was used to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Confederation. It was also a backdrop for the dedication of the Parliament Building’s Centre Block, which was being constructed.
Y The government extended celebrations beyond the Ottawa region in 1980 by sponsoring the development of festivities on a local level. In 1981, 15 major cities offered fireworks to commemorate the day.Y It wasn’t until 1982 that Dominion Day was officially changed to Canada Day.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I started treatment for asthma for the first time at age 80. At first I took prednisone and albuterol. Then I had a Pulmicort inhaler. Now I am on Symbicort. The material that comes with this medicine advises that this LABA (long-acting beta agonist) may increase the chance of death from asthma. Exactly what is this telling me? — E.S.ANSWER: With asthma, there is a sudden constriction of the breathing tubes (bronchi), along with the production of thick mucus. Both block the flow of air into the lungs, and both cause asthma symptoms — shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Asthma changes are reversible.Asthma medications come in three major categories. One is quick-action medicines, the kind that get to work fast to open the breathing tubes. Many of these medicines are SABAs, short-acting beta agonists. Albuterol is one example. Beta agonists dilate bronchi. Too-frequent use of the short-acting beta agonists indicates poor asthma control. They should be used only for an acute attack, and attacks should be infrequent. The second category is cortisone drugs, the potent suppressors of inflammation. They calm airways and prevent their constriction. They also decrease mucus production. Taken by mouth, cortisone drugs have unpleasant side effects when used for long periods in high doses. Taken by inhaler, the side effects are few.
Pulmicort is a cortisone-inhaler drug. The third category of drug is long-acting drugs, drugs that keep the airways less twitchy for prolonged periods. Long-acting beta agonists, LABAs, belong in this category. LABA drugs have been noted to increase the risk of serious asthma attacks, which ended in fatalities for a few. That was in the days when they were used alone. Now they have been incorporated into preparations combined with cortisone drugs. Since these dual preparations have come to the market, no drug-related asthma fatalities have been reported. The warning still exists because a LABA is part of the drug. You don’t need to worry about your medicine, Symbicort. It’s a dual medicine. The asthma booklet explains in detail this common malady. The Fourth of July weekend was approaching, and Miss Pelham, a nursery school teacher, took the
opportunity to tell her class about patriotism. “We live in a great country,” she announced. “One of the things we should be happy about is that, in this country, we are all free.” Trevor, who was a
little boy in her class, came walking up to her from the back of the room. He stood with his hands on his hips and said loudly, “I’m not free. I’m four.”
