Follow along as Tidbits investigates several happenings that have occurred during the first week of July. F Happy Canada Day! July 1 commemorates the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the province of Canada into a federation of four provinces, an 1867 event. This act created the Dominion of Canada, and July 1 was officially declared Dominion Day. It wasn’t until 1982 that the holiday’s name was changed to Canada Day, when the British Parliament relinquished all political rights over Canada. Although countrymen had been singing “O Canada” since 1880, when the song was composed by Canada’s national musician Calixa Lavalee, it wasn’t proclaimed the country’s national anthem until Dominion Day, 1980. F On the first day of July in 1963, the U.S. Post Office instigated its new coding system to enable faster processing of mail. They dubbed it the Zoning Improvement Plan, or ZIP, for short. A five-digit code was assigned to every address across America, with the first number designating the geographical area, the second two digits identifying a regional center, and the last signifying which post office. Today, there are more than 42,000 ZIPs nationwide. F “Don’t you think a stereo cassette player that you can listen to while walking around is a good idea?” Those were the words of Sony’s chairman Masaru Ibuka back in 1979. Ibuka traveled extensively and loved music and pitched the idea to company officials. On July 1 of that year, the Sony Walkman hit retailers’ shelves. Wildlife Seed BlendI like to buy a wildlife seed blend from my local wild bird store. It is chock-full of white stripe and black oil sunflower,

small peanuts in the shell, dried corn and much more. To stretch it out, I mix it

with sunflower chips and unsalted peanuts. The birds love it.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

In the Bible there is only one perfect father and He is God. He is visible, audible, holy, merciful, forgiving, loving, compassionate and He holds us all together. He holds us together, I mean that literally, not figuratively. He, Jesus holds us all together. We are called to take our lead from Him, follow Him and role model Him in our leadership and in our lives.

The God we serve is a great God, a great Father, and does great things for His children and as our heavenly Father He holds us, our communities, our families and His church together.

Think about it, when you find yourself at your rock bottom. When you are feeling angry, depressed, sad, scared, fearful, anxious or disappointed. When you find yourself filled with hurts, habits, hang-ups and holes in your heart. When you need someone to trust who never judges you, your problems/mistakes, your past but always looks at your heart who do most of us go to? In our darkest times who do most of us lean on? Let’s say it together…Jesus.

During these times of trials and storms in our lives we tend to isolate. We often feel as if our only choice is to go it alone. That said, often times when we are going it alone the harder that we try, the more difficult it is to pull it together. The truth is that we all want to appear pulled together, but our brokenness remains just under the surface. Doesn’t it?

Well know this today, there is no need to go it alone. In Colossians 1:15-17 we are reminded that everything has its origin in Christ, that He gives all of life meaning and purpose. While we may be broken

God isn’t intimidated by our brokenness, in fact in our weakness He is strong, in our weakness He holds us together.

Do you get it? God is our example of the one perfect father. Jesus gives meaning to our mess. Jesus gives us a purpose. Jesus gives us hope that our efforts are not in vain. Jesus gives us motivation to work for change. Jesus gathers us — but doesn’t leave us, He also holds us together, maintains and sustains us. We are held together by the loving Spirit of God. We are held together by Christ. Christ is our guiding principle, He is our center. Apart from Him nothing would exist.

It is true that the God we serve was victimized, yes but He was not a victim, instead He was a victor. He gets us thru all things. He is strong when we are weak, He is our binding existence. Yes, He is gentle and humble but He is not timid, He isn’t waiting on events He already knows events, He isn’t waiting on storms to clear up He owns storms, He doesn’t want you to survive life no in fact He wants you to thrive thru life. He gives us strength and He is always our fresh start. He holds us together.

The God I know…The God you know…knows our name. In fact He knows everything about us. He has made each of us a promise that when we surrender to His sovereignty, trusting in Him completely, He literally holds us in His arms, embracing us, loving us and carries us all the days of our lives. He holds us together.

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

A friend of mine is an amazing magician who loves to play tricks on the kids in the neighborhood. One afternoon, I noticed there was a crowd gathered around him watching with great anticipation a magic trick being performed. I arrived just in time to witness his grand finale: pulling a bouquet of flowers out of thin air. The surprise on the kids’ faces — and

mine — was a sight to behold. Here’s another wonderful surprise, and a bit of magic your kids won’t want to miss. It’s a natural transformation that leads to the most peculiar result. This slithery goop appears to be solid one moment, only to ooze out between your fingers, over your wrist and down your arm seconds later.Once you make this concoction, let the school-age kids in your home or at your summer birthday party play with it. Then have a contest to give it a name. For starters, how about “Sublime Slime” or, our favorite, “Ectoplasmic Ick”!
