DESCRIPTION

TAYO Issue 0.5 is our preview magazine (a sneak preview, if you will), which will be included in BakitWhy.com's 200 swag bags at their One Year Anniversary Party on August 1st. Filipino American celebrities like Allan Pineda (apl.de.ap from Black Eyed Peas), and youtube comedian, Happyslip, will attend. TAYO Literary Magazine is the first literary magazine dedicated to the creative expression of Fil-Am youth - whether that be through photography, digital art, graffiti art, drawings, short stories, essays, and poetry about the young Fil-Am experience. We aim to empower Fil-Ams through the arts, but also by giving them an unique and viable network of Filipino writers, artists, and professionals.

TAYO Literary Magazine

TAYO IS A NEW COMMUNITY OF TALENTED ARTISTS & WRITERS.Supported by nonprofits, businesses and social networks, TAYO is geared towards one purpose: bringing our community together. We empower Filipino-American youth through creative forms of expression, such as poetry, essays, photography, paintings and drawings. We are a grassroots project of the Filipino American Library, a nonprofit organization in Historic Filipinotown, located in Los Angeles, CA. By gathering the creative expressions of young Filipino Americans across thenation, we are painting an intricate anthology for our culture and community.

WHO IS TAYO?

TAYO BLURBSWHAT OUR COMMUNITY THINKS

“TAYO, the new Filipino American magazine dedicated to the literary and visual arts, is not just a worthy venture. It is long over-due. For years, Filipino-American writers andartists have produced works of merit. But often they have labored in obscurity, too often ignored by other Filipinos. TAYO could be a first step to changing this. May its life be long.”

- Award-winning author, professor Peter Bacho

“I am very excited about TAYO magazine. It’s such a fresh idea. I commend the kaba-bayan youth spearheading the project, and am equally impressed with some of those who’ve submitted their works of art. It’s enlighten-ing to see and understand Filipino-Americanperspective on several issues. It’s empowering.”

- Host/Producer of Kababayan LA, Jannelle So

“TAYO helps give voice to our all too often understated community. Itsrefreshing to see a new generation define andexpress the many facets of what it means to be a Filipino American in traditional media.”

- Director of BakitWhy.com, Jeremiah Abraham

BUENA PARK, CALIFORNIAPOEM BY DIANA ARBAS

I.We slide into a corner booth at Imperial Burgers. Coffee sits on the table, cooling off. Ed’s miffed. Th’old guy up front gave me a mean look, baby. I sip at coffee, don’t twist to look. But Ed’s pale blue eyes reflect the table-of-two up front: old people forking hash browns, reading the Register. Ed says, Th’old white guy looked at you then looked at me then gave me one mean look. Ed’s lips curl in contempt, remembering it.

After egg-and-bacon sandwiches, I take our empty cups to the counter.

Ed follows with ourtray of crumbs, grease-spotted paper plates; dumps our trash in the “Thank You” bin.

A big guy with a baseballcap waits with his tray of remains, for his turn; his hair red, like Ed. In the lot, Ed punches his fist into the palm of his other freckled hand: I woulda bashed that motherfucker’s face in. I take Ed’s hand, squeeze it: What’s wrong, what’s wrong.

D’ya see that guy? That “Border Patrol” asshole?

(“Border Patrol,” printed on Big-Red-by-the-Bin’s baseball cap.) I say nothing.

Ed says, Stared at us. Y’didn’t see that?

No.

Ed says, When y’turned away, he glared at me, shook his head like this. Then Ed glares at me, shakes his head like that.

I make a face, the bitter aftertaste of bad coffee. Redneck motherfucker, Ed says. It’s always the old white guys who have a problem with you and me.

II.Years ago, Jay Lee, Santa Monica office, took me out, a friendly beer, got drunk enough to say he hates seeing Asian girls with white boys. Oh, he added, no offense. Back then, I was fucking Christopher Matthew Dow, ancestors come over on the Mayflower. Dow, who didn’t like the smell of “my” food, even though chow mein is Chinese.

Jay burped, Fuck. They’re stealing our women. That shit gets to me, man. The other day, ten-minute break from Bio, I cupped vending machine coffee at a table in the lobby. And Jo-Mike Garcia plunked down beside me, uninvited. He sized me up, another Pilipina forgotten where she come from.

Ed says, Stared at us. Y’didn’t see that?

I sipped my coffee, said, What do you want, and made a face. Drink tasted like metal. Jo-Mike sneered, You don’t date pinoys, do you?
