how whilst serving as a trooper with the Warwickshire Imperial Yeomanry he was severely

J. A. Orr-Ewing were going to the rescue of Lieutenant J. S. Forbes and Corporal A. Baxter,
whose horses had been shot from under them whilst crossing the drift on a mission to
reconnoitre a nearby river island. In doing so, both Ashley and Major Orr-Ewing were
wounded and in turn a ten-man rescue party went to their aid. Of the fourteen men
involved in what started as a routine two-man reconnaissance mission, three men were
killed: Major Orr-Ewing, Corporal Baxter and Private W. F. Lane. All but three of the eleven
survivors of the Kheis Drift skirmish were wounded by rifle fire coming from the Boer
occupied island. Ashley rejoined the Yeomanry as a commissioned officer and served in
Palestine in 1917. He retired from the Army with the rank of Major and settled in his
home town, Bedford.
