With your support, Charlie’s Angels became one of the largest fundraisers in this year’s Relay for Life in Stratford. The final tally put them at $10,823.07 Saturday morning and elevated them to “Gold” status. “It was an emotional night,” Jessica Harvey said. In memory of her father, Cephas “Charlie” Roth, who passed away on November 11, 2010, the Charlie’s Angels team was made up of family and extended family who came out to walk all night long as a remem- brance and a hope that someday a cure will be found. She and hus- band, Mike Harvey had done the walk five years ago in memory of Jessica’s grandmother. “This year, it had a different meaning,” she said. When Cephas was diagnosed last June, the family thought he would be walking the survivor’s lap with them. “It didn’t work out that way,” she said. “It was a really tough night, but I’m glad we went through with it.” Charlie’s Angels raised over $10,000.00, although they were announced as a “Silver Team” on Friday evening. About $2,600.00 of that was raised at a fundraising yard sale on June 4th. Although it was a rainy day, “people pulled up and got out of their cars in the pouring rain to support us,” said Jessica. Cephas’s wife, Paulette Roth, said it was quite “a bittersweet experience.” Her brother, Rick Morgenroth, came all the way from Alberta to be a part of the event. “I was so glad … it was pretty special,” Paulette admitted. Several Tavistock and area resi- dents participated in the Survi- vor’s Lap in Stratford including Janet Heinbuch who was wearing a ribbon proclaiming 7 years of cancer-free. She walked along with three or four of her Breast Cancer support group, “Circle of Friends” who raised $2,462.45. The Danen family was partici- pating for the eighth year now with more than 30 family mem- bers in the walk. The Tractor Troop, some of every brand, included the children and grandchildren of the Tony Danen and Bart Danen fami- lies. Tony’s wife Jane passed away in 2003 and five of the 10 Danen families have been touched by cancer in some way. Their team raised $2,981.03. Saputo had a team for the first time this year with 10 members led by Jane McKay. The idea came from discussions in their health and wellness programs at the plant. Participation in the Relay is big in other Saputo manufactur- ing centres and seemed a natural fit for Tavistock employees. The team, raised $1,753.50. Mike’s Valu-Tarts raised $2,187 in their third year of the Relay. Lynne Wilker led the team and was inspired to participate when members of her family and em- ployee’s relatives were affected by this devastating disease. This year’s Relay for Life in Stratford raised over $180,000 with 66 teams. They walked around Upper Queen’s Park in Stratford from 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10 until 7:00 a.m. on Satur- day, June 11. The other gold teams were Firm Believers (Famme & Co.) and the Cancer Crusaders. Special, inspirational speaker for the evening’s opening ceremo- nies was 13-year-old Madison Scott of Whitby. She was partici- pating for the first time, in the Survivors’ Victory Lap, after bat- tling Acute Lymphoblastic Leuke- mia (ALL) since age 9. She had been boarding with Tavistock Grade 3/4 school teacher Mrs. Lisa VanOsch, her husband Ken, and their daughter, Madison, in Stratford, while she acted in the Stratford Festival Theatre’s pro- duction of “To Kill a Mockingbird” in 2007. She was diagnosed and spent two and a half years in treat- ment at Sick Kids Hospital in To- ronto before being declared can- cer-free. Her motivational words were an inspiration to all. An original song was debuted at the Relay by Stratford singer and songwriter Stewart Reynolds en- titled “Shine a Light.” Available on iTunes, proceeds go to the Relay. Mrs. VanOsch lost her father to cancer many years ago and has been a member of the Stratford Relay for Life committee for the past 10 years. She and her daugh- ter, and fellow Tavistock school teacher Sandra Alyea and her daughters, Sadie and Ainsleigh, were all part of the Walking on Funshine team that raised $3,000. This Friday evening, June 17, 2011, is the Relay for Life in Wood- stock. Several Tavistock, Hickson and area teams will participate once again in the Oxford County edition of the Relay. It takes place at College Avenue Secondary School beginning at 7:00 p.m. If you haven’t donated, please go online and pledge your support at http://convio.cancer.ca BILL GLADDING / TAVISTOCK GAZETTE Members of Charlie’s Angels walk in memory of Cephas Roth at the Stratford Relay for Life overnight on Friday, June 10, 2011. Congratulations! Down on the farm storytelling Wed., June 22 Not everyone grew up on the farm, but those who have, can tell you stories. And that’s just what the Tavistock & District Historical Society wants you to do. “Down on the Farm” is planned as an evening of storytelling about life on the farm. It doesn’t have to be a chapter out of a Letter from Wingfield Farm, but an anecdote or event that few people simply wouldn’t know about. Take for example the butcher- ing day when families would get together and ready their meat for the season. What about the days when farmers kept six or eight working horses in the barn. There were times for stooking the grain, threshing in the field with an old steam engine, and cutting flax. Pitching hay up onto the wagon was tiring. Back then, cows were milked in the field and cans of milk driven to the cheese factory. Children were often given the task of feeding the chickens and gathering eggs. They also learned how to catch them for supper. If you had a strong back, hoeing tur- nips was your task. Or one of the most unique operations in the area was boiling willow branches and weaving them into baskets of all shapes and sizes. Come and join others as they share in storytelling on Wednes- day evening, June 22, 2011 at the Tavistock Men’s Club Hall begin- ning at 7:30 p.m. A storyteller will be on hand to get things started. W.I.’s hold District Annual by Anya Donaldson, P.R Forty-one Women’s Institute members attended the District Annual meeting May 23rd at Chalmers United Church in Kintore. President, Sheila Greason, opened the meeting with the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect followed by a memorial service which included branch members who had passed on this past year. Louise Baird gave the financial report. Lite and Lively was presented by Evelyn Arthur with a humorous reading about “Bruce” followed by very effective and fun chair exercises led by Evelyn Douglas. Oxford District W.I. sponsored a successful “Spring Fling” fashion show April 9, 2010. As a result, $450 was donated to the Women’s Emergency Centre. Oxford District also organized a bus trip to Toronto to see a W.I. play entitled “Calendar Girls”. Our members met the cast following the play. Greetings were brought by London Area President Bernice Harris, London Area Voting Delegate - Rie VanSteeg, Perth South President Donna Willows and Provincial Board Director Marlene Archer. Carol Innes, FWIO President, was our guest speaker; she is a member of the Brooksdale Branch. She shared several of her visits to other W.I. meetings and conferences across Ontario. Carol explained that the Erland Lee Homestead in Stoney Creek was closed August 2010 due to financial problems. FWIO will let each W.I. member make an informed decision prior to voting on the future of the homestead

and that “Friends of the Lee” are not affiliated with the board of FWIO. Check out the new website at: www.fwio.on.ca. All branches can update their site. Twinning of Oxford W.I. branches was explained by Anne Innes and twinning lists were given to each branch. Each

member present was given an annual report with printed Convenor’s reports. R.O.S.E. co-ordinator, Anne Roxborough, printed reports from this past years programs which may be useful for planning future branch meetings. Joyce Hill, Tweedsmuir Curator, reported on the success of the August 2010 area workshop on photography/cameras spon-sored by the Oxford District W.I. This year’s London area Tweedsmuir workshop will be held August 2nd in Crediton. Registration is from 9:00-9:30 a.m. Please bring a bag lunch, mug and name tag. The theme is “The Changing World of Quilting”.Roll call - each District is to bring a quilt and tell its story in one minute. Anne Innes gave the report for the Scholarship

Committee for 2010. The Oxford District Scholarship was won by Katrina Hart and the Bursary was won by Yvonne Aarts. The Dorothy Futcher Provincial Scholarship was won by Sheena Grieve and Paul Knoops won the Maryn Pardy London Area Scholarship. Nancy Muir had the Advocacy report printed. She encouraged members to let politicians know our concerns by writing letters. At the Provincial level, W.I. has addressed the closure of small butcher shops across the province by meeting with M.P.P. Carol Mitchell, Dr. Deb Stark and a meat inspector representative. The theme this year is “Back to Basics- the Modern Way”. Next years District Annual will be an evening meeting hosted by the Mt. Elgin May 23, 2012.

When your career is determined by a passion for helping people, you can’t help but be good at it. Growing up in northern Ontario, near Thunder Bay, Shannon Bun-nett learned to love sports. She spent her leisure time cross-coun-try skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding in the winter and in the warmer months you’d find her camping, hiking, trail running and mountain biking. Later, she took on the enjoyment of spinning and yoga and playing squash. This led her to receive her Hon-ours Kinesiology degree from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. She joined a competitive row-ing team at that time and that ex-perience caused her to focus on hydration studies. She then at-tended the University of Guelph where she received her Masters of Nutritional Science degree. While attending university, a part-time job turned into an ap-prenticeship at a local lab that made orthotics. She fast-tracked the three-year program and grad-uated in 2000. Then, by chance and circumstance, a business ven-ture arose in Stratford and she hasn’t looked back. She has oper-ated her own Pedorthist business in Stratford since June of 2000. Working out of the Pysiothera-py Alliance location at 276 Huron Street in Stratford, Shannon has previously had clinics in Wood-stock and St. Marys, but is now focusing on the Stratford and Ta-

vistock locations, and opening an office in Waterloo in the fall. “I like multi-disciplinary offices where other health professionals are un-der one roof.” The principles in her practice are customer service, education and communication. “I really want to help people feel better,” she said. There are many individuals who may provide custom foot or-thotics, however, Shannon says she puts the needs of the patient first and maintains a high level of care. Providing footwear educa-tion on features and fit is vital to her practice. She works with local shoe stores to ensure that her pa-tients have a variety of appropri-ate footwear to choose from. Fol-low up appointments help to ensure that the orthotics are com-fortable and helping, and that any new footwear fits appropriately. Pedorthic reports are sent to all referring professionals to main-tain communication between Shannon and the health care pro-viders of her patients. “How do they walk, stand. What is their alignment. I feel I’m very thorough,” Shannon said. And with a beginning background in the manufacture of foot orthotics, Shannon is one step ahead of most pedorthists. “I know how to make it,” she said. “And I can ad-just, fine tune or repair many or-thotics in my mini-lab right on site,” she added. That gives her pa-tients immediate feed back, a true benefit. Based on a number of physical problems with feet, ankles or knees, either through injury or ab-normalities, a physician or other prescribing healthcare provider’s referral is required. As footwear and orthoses ex-perts, Canadian Certified Pedor-thists work as members of the healthcare team to alleviate pain-ful or debilitating conditions of the lower limbs. They can accom-modate foot deformities, help with

the re-alignment of anatomical structures, improve balance, and enhance the actions of the lower limbs for improved control of bio-mechanical function. Shannon has been involved with the College of Pedorthics through proctoring exams and acting in a supervisory role to stu-dents from the Diploma of Pedor-thics program during their practi-cums as well to co-op students from Lakehead University. Oxford County road painting operations are soon to begin for the summer. As seen above, the road painter is a white single axle truck with a ‘caution, road painting’ sign in fluorescent green on the back. This vehicle applies the paint and glass beads to the yellow centreline and the white edge lines. The water-based paint dries very quickly, but may still be wet behind the truck. If you stay back and do not pass, you will avoid getting paint on your vehicle.

When approaching this piece of equipment from behind please avoid passing if possible and continue to obey the signs on the roadway. Slowing down and proceeding with caution will help keep you, your vehicle, and County workers safe.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

On the first weekend in June the Bailey Construction first year Mite boys entered the Mitchell tournament pumped and ready to take the diamond. The first game was against highway 59 rivals Shakespeare and the boys came out on top winning 14-1. The second game against Shallow Lake they also won, 17-6. Going into the 3rd game of the round robin with a chance to secure a spot in one of Sunday’s semi-final games, the boys came

The Amkad/Bailey Construction Mite Girls #1 squad competed in the Mitchell Tournament June 2-5 and came away with the gold medals through 5 tough ball games. Game # 1 saw the local girls play the host team from Mitchell. This tightly contested match saw the host team score twice in the bottom of the last inning to get a 7-6 win. Emma Brown had 3 strikeouts and Brooke Cressman struck out 7 in the tough loss. Morgan Stock led the way with 3 hits for Tavistock with Maddie Hofstetter and Me-gan Bailey chipping in with 2 hits a piece. Emma Brown and Alyssa Forthuber added singles in the loss. Game # 2 saw the Athletics take on the New Hamburg Heat and “walk” away with a 12-8 victory. Leah Bauman struck out 6 and Brooke Cressman outed 3 batters. Leah Bauman collected the only hit of the game in this walk-filled contest. Game # 3 pitted the local girls against a tough squad from Exeter. Kamryn Lamond struck out 2 and Brooke Cressman threw 4 innings of shutout ball striking out 10 for a 9-6 Tavistock win. Cressman also led the way at the plate with 2 home runs while Sarah Bailey collected 3 hits including a 2 RBI triple. Other hitters were K. Lamond (2), L. Bauman, M. Hofstetter, E. Brown, M. Bailey, M. Stock and A. Forthuber. Game # 4 against a strong Fullerton squad, Cressman went the distance striking out 11 with Tavistock prevailing 12-8. Cress-man again led with 2 more home runs while M. Stock also belted a round tripper. Other hitters for this game included S. Bailey (2), E. Brown (2), M. Bailey (2), L. Bauman (2), M. Hofstetter, and K. Lamond.

out swinging with a 15-4 win over Stouffville. With a record of 3-0 in round robin, it was off to Sunday’ finals. They defeated Wiarton 9-0 and it was off to play Kitchener in the finals. After Kitchener led the game with 2 home runs the boys rallied together and tied the game. They then scored 4 runs in the later innings to take the lead and never looked back winning the championship game 6-4 to take home the gold medals.

Mite Girls win at Mitchell Game # 5 was the championship final, a re-match with the Mitchell squad. Tavi-stock’s squeezed out a 7-6 victory. Brown started striking out 9 batters and Cressman struck out 3 to preserve the victory and the Gold Medals for the A’s. Cressman again was stellar at the plate collecting another 3 hits including a home run. M. Bailey con-nected for a big 2 RBI double with single hits going to E. Brown, K. Lamond and M. Hofstetter. The Mite Girls #1 squad is comprised of a majority of first year players, so this victory is a great confidence boost for this young, but talented team.
