Tauranga, New Zealand Beauty and Bounty

Rudyard Kipling, were he alive today, could probably be heard exclaiming that New Zealand is “the eighth wonder of the world.” He visited this country in 1891 during a lengthy sea voyage, the advice of his very wise doctor. Kipling was not wrong about New Zealand. An author, a respected poet, and an avid world traveler with a keen sense of wanderlust, Kipling knew a good thing when he saw one and he viewed New Zealand as absolutely magical.

vulcan fury, a sip of a fine regional wine, a journey back to a time of conflict, or an introduction to New Zealand’s Maori culture.

The North IslandAs easily as one wanders from Dis-

neyland’s Fantasyland to Frontierland, feeling as though you’ve literally traveled through time, one can journey between New Zealand’s North Island and South Island. Though both islands are daz-zling to the eye, the North Island offers up a panorama of explosive geysers and primeval pools of bubbling mud. All around are fissures in the earth shooting steam clouds into the sky.

It is said that the North Island’s creation is rooted in Maori mythology. Long ago, a powerful son of the gods caught a large fish in the sea. Maui, as this lad was known, ordered his brothers to leave the fish alone. But his brothers defied Maui’s order not to eat the fish he had caught. The fish wriggled and writhed and ultimately escaped to create the jagged landscape that is now New Zealand’s North Island. In the Maori language, the North Island is known as “the fish of Maui” or Te Ika A Maui.

A Place Called TaurangaThe town of Tauranga lies perched on

the North Island’s eastern coast where the waters of the Bay of Plenty wash ashore. Captain Cook was so impressed with the congenial islanders in this area that it was he who named this spot the Bay Of Plenty. And, with good reason. The mild climate here supports a boun-tiful agricultural backdrop including large forests used for timber. Though Tauranga is today a busy center for tour-ism and commerce, it also has a very rich history.

Some 150 years ago, Tauranga was a bustling community that relied on flax trading for much of its income. As with so many fledgling towns, along with merchants and traders came the mis-sionaries to spread the word of God. But no faith could stem the tide of conflict. In 1864, Tauranga experienced some terrible battles during the New Zealand Wars. In fact, a compassionate tale is of-ten told about an incident that occurred during the fierce Battle of Gate Pā. It is said that a British soldier, wounded during a skirmish, cried out for water as he lay on the damp earth wracked with pain. A brave Maori woman named Heni te Kirikamu heard the soldier’s weakening cries. Unable to listen any longer, she silently crept behind enemy lines to fetch water to take to this fallen soldier and four others who lay wound-ed nearby.

While in Tauranga, you can visit Gate Pā, site of one of the final battles between the British and Maori people or the Missionary House that dates back to 1847.

Further AfieldRotorua is the highlight for many visi-

tors who wish to experience its bubbling mud pools and steaming thermals. At the Whakarewarewa Thermal Village, geysers fill the air with a mist that mysti-fied early members of the Tuhourangi-Ngati Wahio tribe. Also mystifying is why some people bungee jump, zip along the Kaituna River in jetboats, or raft on the Rangitaiki but they do because this is unmistakably the land of adventure.

berries found their way to the Bay of

Plenty. Three decades passed before a farmer named Jim MacLoughlin set aside an acre of land for the cultivation of this fruit. But it wasn’t until some 25 years later that that this unique, fuzzy brown fruit became a marketable, ex-portable commodity. It became known, quite simply, as kiwifruit. And the rest, as they say, is history.

So, while here in sunny Tauranga, you can wander past the historic sights, take in the local color, or sit under a shade tree along The Strand scooping out the flesh of a perfectly-ripened kiwi while reading a Kipling tale. It’s all rather pleasant, one might say.

Wood Carvings & Pesky CrittersPlease note that when we visit some countries there are certain unavoidable characteristics inherent in the flora and fauna. For example, when purchasing a wood carving, or perhaps a souvenir wrapped in packing materials or a wooden crate, there may in fact be small worms or bugs present, some of which may not be visible to the human eye. To safeguard the risk of infestation, we kindly ask you to do the following:

1.) Wooden items should be surrendered to our Security Staff upon reboarding Crystal Serenity, ensuring that your items are properly labeled with your name and stateroom. They are then placed in our freezers for 48 hours, to ensure all undesirable adult bugs and their eggs are quickly and humanely eliminated. The items are then delivered to your state-room after the indicated “freeze time” has passed.

2) Please dispose of the item’s original leftover packaging.

Thank you for your kind attention and cooperation in keeping Crystal Serenity free of “pesky critters.”

Crystal Serenity’s Master Captain Birger J. Vorland

Raised on the small Norwegian island of Bømlo, south of Bergen, Captain Birger Johannes Vorland spent most of his youth around ships. Growing up on the island, many of his relatives and friends were drawn to careers at sea. Captain Vorland was no exception, having grown up with a father who was a prominent sea captain.

At age 19, young Vorland became a seaman on a cargo ship sailing the North Sea. He then completed his military service and went overseas on cargo ships before making the transition to his first luxury cruise ship in 1983. At first he found life on board a passenger vessel to be very different from that of a cargo ship. However, once he settled in, he decided that a passenger ship was the best place to continue his own career. Captain Vorland then began his officer training in Norway. After returning to sea for practical experience, he subsequently attended nautical college for an additional three years.

In 1988, Captain Vorland progressed to the posi-tion of First Officer back on his first cruise ship that he had left five years earlier. The following year he was promoted to Chief Officer — a position he held on two different cruise ships.

He continued to work his way up through the ranks with two cruise lines, serving as Staff Captain beginning in 1994 and then as Master of his first passenger ship in April 2000.

In 2002, Crystal Cruises approached Captain Vorland to see if he would consider joining the Crystal Family. After a brief moment to think over the matter, he ac-cepted the offer and began his stellar career with Crystal Cruises in early 2003 as Master on board Crystal Harmony. He served on this great vessel until she left Crys-tal Cruises’ fleet in late 2005, when he took a position in the Los Angeles corporate offices of Crystal Cruises.

His tenure as Vice President, Nautical Operations was initially supposed to last just two to three years. However, it ended up being a total of seven and a half years. Dur-ing his time in the corporate office, Captain Vorland retained his licenses and, from time to time, served as master on both Crystal ships when the need arose.

As any Crystal guest knows, the call of the sea is a strong one. And, in mid-2012, Captain Vorland decided he would like to return to the seagoing life he loves. Coincidentally, a vacancy became available for master of Crystal Serenity and Captain Vorland was happy to step in and assume this leadership role on one of his favorite ships. As he says, “To command the world’s highest rated cruise vessel was an opportunity too great to pass up.”

When he is not at sea, Captain Vorland resides with his wife, Dana, in Sherman Oaks, California, and he makes at least one trip a year back to his native Norway. In either locale, he is most often found enjoying the outdoors. An avid hunter and camper, Captain Vorland also enjoys photography and mountain biking.

and first became a Cruise Director in 1984. This year marks his sixteenth World Cruise, and he always enjoys traveling to various parts of

the world, although his favorite region is the South Pacific.

Rick is originally from New Jersey but now hails from Charlotte, North Carolina, where he spends his vacations playing golf and with his four children – Michael, Anne-Marie, Nicholas and Steven. As he moved up the ladder of success, Rick says he always wanted to work for Crystal Cruises: “It’s a pleasure to work for such a wonderful company, and with a crew who love what they do. I’ve always felt that if the crew enjoyed what they did, it would be infectious, hence, the guests would enjoy their cruise experi-ence that much more. It’s great to be part of the Crystal Family.” Often introduced as “Mr. Posi-tive Attitude,” he loves socializing and spending time with guests, and will always have time for you.

Karen Dickson

Hubert Gems, Gemologist and Director of Sales

Karen Dickson was born in Hampshire, England but proud to have been brought

up in Fife, Scotland. Since 2002 Karen has worked on luxury cruise ships managing their boutiques, including most recently Crystal

Symphony and Crystal Serenity.Karen has worked with Hubert’s designs since 2008 after meeting Hubert whilst working on the beautiful Crystal Symphony and enjoys the diversity of working alongside such a talented designer as Hubert. All of Hubert’s designs are artistically and meticulously constructed, from fun fashion pieces, to one-of-a-kind designs. He is one of the few jewelers involved in every aspect of jewelry making, which is one of the main reasons why Karen is proud to represent his company.

In her years of travelling, Karen has visited just about everywhere that a ship can reach. Amongst her favorite places would be Africa, Australia, much of Europe, the South Pacific, Antarctica and most recently the North West Passage voyage which she tells as a truly memo-rable experience. Happiest in warmer climates, Karen loves the beach, which is why you will rarely see her at home during the Scottish winters.

Crystal Serenity welcomes Karen for this “New Zealand Natural Wonders” voyage. “What I love about Crystal is having so many familiar faces, staff and guests to return to, it’s like my home away from home.”

Hubert Gesser Brings Color to The World, One Gemstone at a Time

Hubert Inc. primarily serves clients in the United States, although one third of its business is abroad. The company’s range is vast, accommodating the desires of a broad range of retailers, enthusiasts, and collectors with quality gem-set jewelry that provides great value at

every price level offered.

For nearly 25 years, Hubert Gesser has traveled the globe in search of nature’s most beautiful treasures. Throughout Africa, South America, the Far East and further, Hubert looks for the best the world has to offer in a spectrum of gemstones from classic blue sapphire to exotic Paraiba tourmalines.

Brazilian born and raised Hubert came to the United States when he was 18-years-old, attending the University of Cali-fornia, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree for mechanical engineering. For about a year, he worked for a manufacturer producing aerospace and prototype missile parts, managing a 60-member staff. But when Hubert met someone who travelled the world importing gems, he decided without hesitation, to invest his then entire net

worth into loose gemstones which he could resell and distribute. This decision inspired a career change that he would build into a successful gem lapidary house and jewelry manufacturing company known today as Hubert Inc.

Hubert quickly learned how to develop a keen eye for beautiful color in both the most commonly known gems like amethyst, to rarities like natural color cherry topaz and alexan-drite. Moreover, he soon realized that more clients wanted finished jewelry, motivating him to build his skills as a designer and surround himself with expert cutters, goldsmiths and wax carvers to get the job done in his L.A. based studio. Eventually he learned firsthand the art of buying and faceting rough as well as the intricacies of handcrafting fine jewelry.

Although gemstones and jewelry seem like a far cry from his background in engineering, Hubert notes that his field of study gives him strength in problem solving, which has served him well, particularly when it comes to custom designs that account for more than 50 percent of his business. In addition to the beauty in the gems he sources, Hubert has remained fascinated by the interesting people he meets in the business, from artisan miners in the backcountry of Brazil, to regular jewelry connoisseurs, to royalty such as the Queen of Spain. The stories surrounding these gemstones build a lifetime of memories and symbolism for anyone who comes in contact with them.

All of Hubert’s designs are artistically and meticulously constructed, from fun fashion pieces, to one-of-a-kind designs. He is one of the few jewelers involved in every aspect of jewelry making. Although Hubert is the principal designer for the brand, the company also retains two additional designers on staff. “For me, the most inspiring pieces are the ones I do collaboratively with my private clients.”

Join us in Facets to meet Hubert Gesser, President and Principal Designer from Hubert Gems who will be sailing with us until Sydney.

Modern MixologyThe Latest Drink Trends

Crystal Cruises proudly presents the excit-ing trend of “GinTonica” – the Spanish style freedom to dream up innovative Gin & Tonic recipes using the freshest ingre-dients and garnishes. The ‘new style’ Gin and Tonic was born on the Iberian Pen-insula and rapidly spread across Europe. Gone is the traditional ice and a slice of lemon in a highball glass replaced by the large Spanish “copa” glass. New gins, and an understanding of their identity, help the bartender to create something deli-cious by adding complementing liquors, herbs, spices and even tonic selection. We have added some new gins to our bar-keepers’ portfolio providing more flavors and styles to inspire.

Embracing the leaning towards low and non-alcoholic cocktails, we have created some new offerings for your enjoyment. We have introduced Seedlip Garden & Seedlip Spice, billed as the world’s first non-alcoholic distilled spirits. They are distilled using botanicals in the same fashion as gin, but they are not a gin. They also answer the question of what to drink when you are not drinking.

With their specialized training, Crystal Serenity’s bartenders invite you to sample our exciting cocktail creations!

We invite you to visit all of our bars during your cruise and enjoy our new signature cocktails.
