WHERE ARE YOU GOING?WHERE WILL THE NEXT LEGOF YOUR EXPEDITION LIFEJOURNEY TAKE YOU?

And what will your next outdoor adventure be? //Are you

dreaming of long treks in deserted wilderness with plenty of

equipment? Or would you prefer to make more rapid progress

with just the bare essentials on your back? Do you want to

travel the whole world? Or will you be facing the weather

conditions closer to home? Wherever your own personal

Expedition Life takes you with TATONKA products you have

reliable and loyal companions by your side that are suitable for

you and your favourite pastimes. As they are specially devel-

oped according to your individual needs and the special condi-

tions outside: with practical details, but without unnecessary

gimmicks. Made from robust, yet light materials.

And speaking of materials: TATONKA has once again landed a

great coup. Together with Invista we have made the high-tech

materials Cordura 700 DEN and Cordura 100 DEN Dobby

suitable for civilian use and are one of the first brands to have

put them to use for outdoor products. The two Cordura mate-

rials fulfil the high standards of our new EXPrange, which

you can find out more about on page 34.

However, there are of course natural limits to the trend

toward increasingly lighter products. After all, what use is the

lightest lightweight if it ends up being uncomfortable to carry

on the tour or is damaged the first time it scrapes against a

rock? This is whyTATONKA focuses on the combination of light

weights, the best carrying comfort and the longest durability.

The results are products that keep their promises. Products

that will accompany you for a long time to come. On your

next outdoor experience as well as on all further stages of

    your Expedition Life.

The TATONKA quality is no coincidence, but a result of our con-

sistent production strategy //As one of the few companies

in the outdoor industry we develop and manufacture our

products ourselves. At our headquarters in Dasing, near

Augsburg in Germany. And at our own production site in

Vietnam. This means that we have a direct influence on allfactors and are positive that on ly products we would use our-

selves actually leave the factor y.

At our factories in Vietnam we have been committed to the

quality of the TATONKA products with great passion for more

than 20 years, as well as for the long-term, responsible treat-

ment of our workers and environment. Every single one

of them has completed qualified training programmes and

thanks to our vocational training measures, they also have

excellent career opportunities. Which is certainly also a

reason why many of our original employees from the earlydays are still worki ng for us. And as an outdoor brand, it goes

without saying that we have always manufactured our prod-

    ucts in an environmentally-friendly way.

    WE ARE AWARE OF OUR

RESPONSIBILITY TO PEOPLE,NATURE AND OUR PRODUCTS.THIS IS WHY WE ENSURE OUR

AFTER BRAINSTORMING, REFINING, TINKERING AND TAILORING ITS TIMEFOR THE MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF OUR WORK: TESTING THE BEST.

We also send our products on an Expedition L ife //After all, its a long way from the initial idea

to the development and production to its use in the great outdoors. And we take advantage

of the opportun ity to test the new products ourselves before sending them out into the world.

We often return from our product tests a nd make improvements to one or two details here or

there. This has not only resulted i n some outstanding products, but we have also notched up

a few test tours in the most beautifu l and wildest spots on ea rth, like t he Dolomites, Corsica

    and Lapland.

Tours that inspire and have to be repeated. And we also chose a beautiful dest ination for this

years tour: Greece. The land of immortal Gods and myths. According to Greek mythology,

an act of God is behind every natural phenomenon: the strength of winged Hermes in the

blustery wind, in the lightning sky Hephaistos who was thrown down to earth, and in the

rain we can sense the loving reunion of Zeus with Demeter. We wanted to experience this

legendary nature, which provided the inspi ration of the Ancient Greeks for such myths, wit h

our own eyes. So this is why we set off on a journey to the untouched, largely undiscovered

parts of Greece. Read what we experienced there on the following p ages.

The strong TATONKA partners //For many years

now, TATONKA has been accompanied and sup-

ported on its Expedition Life by strong part-

ners. This is why we are constantly coming up

with innovative products that set new bench-

which we developed together with the Bavarian

Mountain Rescue Ser vice. Or t he fi rst-aid sets,

which were developed in cooperation with the

Outdoorschule Sd. You will recognise these

products as they are labelled by the relevant

What is it that makes our products so special? //It is our passion for

outdoor sports, our attention to detail and, last but not least, the

cooperation with our strong partners, for whom, just like us, t he

best is only just good enough. This results in products that have

won multiple awards from independent institutes.

Finding the perfect rucksack is not always an easy task //

But it doesn't have to be difficult either if you know what

you have to look out for. The perfect rucksack has to offer

a lot: high carrying comfort and a light weight, hard-wearing

materials and optimum resistance against adverse conditions

when for example the Greek gods are playing havoc with theweather again. It doesn't just have to suit its area of use, but,

above all, also its carrier. This is why we not only have one

rucksack in our range, but many specialists with different

carrying systems: for example rucksacks for carrying heavy

loads, rucksacks for alpine use or rucksacks for active use

    when you're on the move.

Discover which rucksacks we mean and for which tours and

which backs they are suitable for in the following chapters. But first of all we have compiled details about the different

TATONKA carrying systems. And we're sure that you'll soon

find your perfect travelling companion amongst them.

Flexible for medium to heavy loads:

    THE V2 CARRYING SYSTEM

The construction of the V2 system with specially positioned rods ( 1 , 2 ) provides anexcellent ratio of efficient load transfer and flexibilit y at the same time. The carrier can

still move around relatively well, despite the heavy weight he or she is carrying. The

ergonomically shaped hip strap with lumbar pad 3 and conically shaped hip wings 4 is

comfortably padded and prevents the rucksack from slipping. The back padding with

its concave shape 5 guarantees optimum hold and good contact to the rucksack for

sufficient freedom of movement, even when the rucksack is full. The load control

straps 6 , the comfortable shoulder strap 7 and the lid 8 are adjustable and allow you to

    find the perfect fit.

    As light as possible:

THE X LITE VARIO CARRYING SYSTEM

The X Lite Vario carrying system was designed to be as light as possible. This makesit the right choice on active tours when you don't want to take many belongings. The

special back construction with side stabilisers, three-part hip st rap with lumbar pad 1 ,

two comfortable hip wings 2 and concave-shaped back padding 3 ensure that the r uck-

sack sits perfectly and prevents it f rom slipping out of place. Two X-shaped crossed glass

fibre rods 4 efficiently deflect the load to t he ergonomically shaped hip strap, thereby

transferring it from the shoulders to the hips.

    Good ventilation on hikes:

THE X VENT VARIO CARRYING SYSTEM

The X Vent Vario system is mainly used for hiking and active rucksacks. It combines theclever load distribution of the X systems with the pleasant carrying comfort of a ventila-

ted system. Thanks to the X-shaped construction 1 the load is transferred horizontally to

the hip strap in sturdy Hypalon pockets 2 . The mesh back 3 can be smoothly tightened or

loosened depending on whether ventilation is required or if the rucksack is to sit direct-

ly against the back. Additional back padding 4 makes carrying a tight-fitting rucksack

particularly comfortable, the hip strap 5 has been given a very ergonomic design with

the new padding, and the curved shoulder straps 6 are made from an extremely light,

    comfortable material.

    Compact for alpine use:

THE PADDED BACK VARIO CARRYING SYSTEM

The height-adjustable Padded Back Vario carrying system displays its advantages withlight loads in alpine areas due to its high f lexibility and light weight. With the TATONKA

ladder adjustment system 1 the shoulder straps 2 can be individually adjusted to the

length of your back, and the hip strap 3 can be removed when wearing a climbing

harness, which is of particular advantage in alpine use. When aff ixed to the rucksack, it

transfers the load to the hips t hanks to its special shape. The elaborately manufactured

padding 4 with AirMesh ensures high carrying comfort and good ventilation.

    THE VENT COMFORT CARRYING SYSTEM

Especially during active sports the Vent Comfort carrying system provides pleasant aircirculation with its central ventilation channel 1 and an air-permeable AirTex cover.

Two foam pads on the sides 2 offer a high level of carrying comfort with thi s light back

construction, their concave shape guarantees optimum load control, even when you're

    moving fast.

Essential for very active tours when you have a lot of weight on your back is the waist

strap 3 , which provides additional stability.

    Improves horizon-

    tal load control

We can develop our products as much as we want if a rucksack doesnt sit correctly against the body then its

features cannot carry any weight. ManyTATONKA carrying systems are therefore equipped with an adjustable

ladder system, which allows you to individually adjust the rucksack to your back length.

When purchasing a rucksack, make sure you choose a size that is roughly equivalent to your back length.

S for short backs, M for medium-sized b acks, L for long backs a nd XL for very long backs. Any fi ne adjustments

can then be made using t he adjustable ladder system.

Step 1: Thread the lower Velcro fl ap behind the rung of the ladder that is ideal for your back length.

Step 2: Then thread t he upper Velcro fl ap, leaving a gap of two ladder rung s.

Step 3: Now affi x the two fl aps onto t he centra l section fi rst the top one, t hen the bott om one.

Put the rucksack onto your back. Does everything fi t? Even if its already sitting comfortably, this question should

only be answered after carr ying out a mini practice test. After all, 20 kilos more or less on your back certainly

make a difference. Now fi ll it up and walk a round the garden for a whi le with it on your back to get a feel for t he

rucksack and its weight. Does everyt hing still fi t? If not: simply make some more small adjustments.

    TREKKING IN HELLAS MAY SOUND

SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL. BUT IT'SA REAL ADVENTURE BEYOND THEWELL-KNOWN ISLAND CLICHS.

Greece not only has sunshine, beaches and sea to offer //But also

lots of mountains between 2000 and 3000 metres high. While

at the end of May the Alps at this altitude are still lyi ng under

a thick sheet of snow, springtime is already beginning here.

And that is what magnetically attracts us northern Europeans.

We have chosen a dream trekking tour: it takes us from theVikos Canyon (one of the deepest gorges in the world, which

has even made it into the Guinness Book of Records) via the

scenic mountain village of Micro Papingo and the Astraka

mountain pass right into t he heart of the fascinating world of

    the northern Pindus mountain range.

Cicadas are chirping, it is gurgling and dripping everywhere,

the mountain meadows are in full splendour. Were not sur-

prised when we bump into three nature lovers on the way to

Dragon Lake, their eyes glued to the ground on the lookout for

any creeping and crawling creatures. We meanwhile marvel

at the Astraki massif, which can certainly hold its own in

a comparison with the Dolomites. Todays destination, theDrakolimni, or Dragon Lake, is picturesquely framed by the

springtime snow, and once again we have the feeling that we

are witnessing a un ique moment that wil l be etched into our

memories forever. Tomorrow well be tackling the Gamila 1.

But not until weve made the most of today.

What is it that fascinates us about trekking? //The term trekking

is originally derived from treks, the long, arduous and risky

journeys of the fi rst settlers in North America. And its exactly

this kind of tour that we as trekkers love: they should take us

through extraordinary, unknown landscapes and be full of

    great, unexpected challenges.

Amidst so much uncertainty, however, we should be able to rely

on one thing: our equipment. Admittedly, when we strap on our

fully packed rucksacks for the fi rst time at the Zagori Circuit,

despite the comfortable TATONKA carrying systems we had the

feeling that we had once again packed too much. But that passes

after a few hours. And after feeling the strain in our muscles on

the second day, by the th ird day were used to it.

And yet here we have once again encountered trekkers who

have experienced real tortuous tours. Often all we have to do

is glance at their rucksacks and we immediately know why.

Thats why you should be very sure before you commit to a

    purchase:

How much luggage will I be taking on the tour with me?

What kind of a trekker am I? Cart horse or speedy trekker?

What kind of terrain will I be walking on during the tour?

Which features are important to me?

What is the right carrying system for me?

    And here are our recommendations:

For heavy loads over 20 kg and for extra long tours, where

you need to carry a lot, we recommend the trekking ruck-

sacks Bison (for men) and Tana (for women) with the

X1 carrying system. Globetrotters who dont even want to

leave behind their k itchen sink should go for the Bison with a

    huge 90-litre volume.

For the all-rounders, who carry loads of around 15 kg, the

trekking rucksacks Yukon and Isis are ideal. The comfortable

V2 carrying system efficiently distributes the load and is

one of the best and most tried-and-tested constructions for

    trekking tours.

METEORA: A PILGRIMAGEWITH A GREEK ORTHODOX TWIST.It's doesn't always have to be the Camino de Santiago //If you dont want to make a pil-

grimage with the masses, then wed recommend Meteora. The monasteries here are

strung together like on a pearl necklace and the path leads th rough a mysterious forest

of towering pillars of rock. Its especially impressive in the early hours of the morning

when the mists slowly lift to reveal the rocks and in t he evening when the sun bathes

the scenery in a picturesque golden red light.

We already packed our pilgrim rucksacks the night before and set off at the crack

of dawn to enjoy this spectacle in all of its facets. Long distances are covered on the

Camino de Santiago, whereas a pilgr image to Meteora is a constant up a nd down. We

notch up a fair few metres in alt itude, but we cope splendidly. After all, thanks to the

X Lite carrying system our rucksacks sit perfectly against our bod ies so that we barely

notice their weight and can fully concentrate on the mystical world between heaven

    and earth.

    A STORY ABOUT SHEEP,

WOLVES, SMUGGLERS,AND TWO SUMMITS WITHFANTASTIC VIEWS.

There arent any paths, but just keep to the left of the stream,

continue past a large tree across gravel, over some stone slabs

and a little clambering up onto the Gamila. //We must have

big question marks hanging over our heads. But, as we found

out later, the shepherds gesticulations are actually pointing

us in the exact direction. We have our sights set on two sum-

mits today and are g lad were carrying light active rucksacks.

Especially after a sleepless night: loudly bleating sheep were

being herded onto the upland pastures, which can attract

wolves. But instead of wolves we were faced with four Alba-

nian smugglers, who immediately took to their heels when we

    approached them

Still rather tired we first climb over steep serpentines and

loose pebbles on the Astraka and are rewarded with an

overwhelming view of the almost endless wilderness. Feel-

ing euphoric, we set off onto the Gamila 1. Hours later we

are enjoying an even more superb panoramic view of Dragon

Lake, the Astraka Massif, the Vikos Canyon and the Aoos

Gorge all the way to faraway Albania. But its on the way back

that we experience the real adventure. It starts to cloud over.

Sleet showers drastically reduce visibility. And which way

was it again? At some point, long after darkness has fallen we

finally reach t he Astraka hut, exhausted but happy.

groups //Knee socks and a red checked shirt are the favourite

uniform for some. Others couldnt imagine setting off without

their trendy hiking equipment, electrolyte drinks and energy

bars. But one thing applies to everyone: as long as you are

outside in the fresh ai r, thats all that matters.

So at the end of the day its also a question of taste whether

you decide on a toploader or frontloader rucksack. Some

swear by the classics Breva and Tivano, which have been

part of the collection for many years and whose details are

constantly being improved. Others prefer the modern top-

loader models Karema and Farou or the new frontloader

    models Zefir and Cona.

Whichever TATONKA hiking rucksack you go for all models

    have the following features:

Firstly: a ventilated and, above all, height-adjustable X Vent

Vario carrying system, which serves its carrier excellently

under the hot Greek sun, even when fully loaded.

Secondly: comfortable, ergonomically shaped shoulder and

hip straps, which distribute the weight evenly on the shoul-

    ders and hips.

Thirdly: the many practical details that hugely increase the

carriers comfort. Such as for example the signa l-coloured rain

cover, the first-aid compartment, key holder, hydration system,

hiking stick holder, chest strap with signal whistle and even

    more.

Of course all of our hiking rucksacks are available as ladies

and mens models, which are adapted to the physical dif-

ferences between male and female bodies. And if the men

amongst you are now saying that there arent any differences

(and there certainly are!): we suggest you go to a specialist

retailer and try on a well-filled ladies rucksack to compare.

    And vice-versa for the ladies.

    OUR CAMPSITES CHARGE

NO FEE AND ARE NEVEROVERCROWDED. HOWEVER,THEYRE NOT VERY EASY

TO REACH EITHER.On our 6-day Pindus tour we actually wanted to spend every night

in our tents //But it ended up being only three. We spent the

other nights in t he valley hostels of the Zagorian villages and

at the Astraki lodge. And this was certainly very enjoyable:

the food served at the hostels is simply delicious. And the

stories about wolves, bears and ski tours told to us by the

landlord of the Astraki lodge were just as fascinating. But the

nights we spent camping outdoors were really the icing on

the cake. The fir st campsite was located down in the V ikos

Canyon in the middle of a field of flowers at the springs of

the Voidomatis, the second around 1500 metres above that

directly by the legendary Dragon Lake.

According to the legend there is a dragon slumbering at the

bottom of the Drakolimni Lake. Of course we didnt get to

see it, but we did spot its children: little dragon-like alpine

newts. At this mystical place we pitched up our tents as the

sun was setting and set up a campfire using the little f lamma-

ble material that we could find in this barren landscape. And

just by chance we happened to find a bottle of wine in one of

our rucksacks. What more could a hiker want? Well, perhaps

more sleep: our trekking dog Flora howled like a wolf all n ight

long. But thats already the beginning of another story.

    Truth 1 //There is no such thing a s 100% water-

proof tents. A tent is made from a com bination

of different materials and parts. Depending on

their construction, not all seams can be joined

to make them waterproof, and water can also

penetrate through zip fasteners, and condensation

is supposed to be chan nelled away via openings

    in the tent.

Truth 2 //Tents dont last a lifetime. All materials

age. Especially when theyre subjected to tough

weather conditions and UV rays. Tips on the

right way to deal with external infl uences can

be found in the Tent-ABC and the TATONKA Tent

    Handbook.

Truth 3 //Even in good tents there will be conden-

sation. The formation of condensation is a physical

process, which cannot be prevented in tents. Tips

on minimising condensation can be found in the

    TATONKA Tent Handbook.

Truth 4 //Aluminium poles break. If they are not

handled or stored properly, or if too much force is

applied, even aluminium poles will be damaged.

This is why you should always ta ke at least one

repair sleeve with you when you go camping.1 2 3 4

If you pay attention to the Care and Repair t ips here in the catalogue or in even more detail in the TATONKA Tent Handbook, you will be able to en-

joy your TATONKA tent for a very long time to come. And of cour se we can also of fer you the professional TATONKA repair service for our tents. Within

    the bounds of feasibility.

4 TRUTHS ABOUT TENTSOf course every camping enthusiast wishes that their latest purchase is 100% dry in side, will last a lifetime and su rvive the years without any damage. Tents from TATONKA are top class and are produced with high-quality workma nship,

but we dont want to keep the following four truths f rom you:

Guy ropes //Guy ropes help to make your tent stable when its blowing a gale and rain-

ing cats and dogs. The advantage ofTATONKA tents is that they have a roll-up system for

guy ropes, which makes taking t hem down a lot easier and prevents knots. For better

visibility in the dark t he ropes have refl ective sleeves.

Porch //The porch is the storage space for luggage in the tent between the inner tent

and the entrance. A clean and d ry storage space for everyth ing that you dont need

    inside the inner tent.

Entrances //TATONKA inner tent entrances are wide and simple to us e. Mosquito win-

dows that can be closed separately and ea sily with one hand are ba sic features. When

the tent is open the entrance section can be stowed away in the side pocket or rolled up

    and secured.

Frame //In order to be able to set up t he tent, we use depending on the tent category

two different aluminium alloys. Both var iations are highly break-proof. The individual

segments are hollow, inside is a fi xed rubber ba nd onto which the seg ments are attached

in the right order like beads on a necklace and can be easily inserted into one another.

Tent pegs //There are different tent pegs for different types of ground. Our tents come

with standard pegs. You can purchase special tent pegs for particularly sandy, hard or

    stony ground, or even snow.

Vents //Vents are covered openings in the outer skin of the tent, which provide air

circulation. They are separately tensioned and waterproof. Thanks to a stiff fabr ic band

TATONKA vents can be positioned easily, even after intense use. Mosquito windows and

tension points are standard features on our tents; vents that can be closed from the

inside are available exclusively in our high-end collection.

Pockets //Pockets offer storage space and help you to keep your tent tidy. Side pockets at

head height (when lying down) are perfect for storing items such as spectacles. Almost

all of our tents with porch have an additional detachable porch pocket and a roof p ocket

for sunglasses, insect spray or other odds and ends.

Ground sheets //Ground sheets protect the base of the tent from damages caused by

stones, branches, etc., and also fend off cold and wetness for a long time. The ground

sheet should not be bigger than the guyed outer tent, to avoid funnel effects. Porch

ground sheets make the porch a clean and dry stora ge space, even when the weather is

bad and the ground is damp.

UV radiation //Tent materials, especially the outer fabric, are subject to an ageing process

and lose their resistance over time. The ma in cause of this is UV radiation. Tents with

silicone coating are far more resistant than those w ith PU coating. So its best to choose

a shady spot to pitch up your tent to avoid any risks.

Water column //The water column is a measure of how high the water pressure can be

before the fabr ic lets in moisture. According to DIN, a value of 1500 mm is classifi ed as

waterproof. But a water column measurement is not always a sign of q uality. The outer

tents of our high-end series with 1500 mm have a much lower water column than our

all-round tents (8000 mm) but their special coating mea ns that drops of water dr ip off

immediately and therefore guarantees a 100% watertight surface. TATONKA ground sheets

have a water column of 10,000 mm (al l-round) or 8000 mm (high-end).

With tunnel, dome and geodesic, TATONKA offers three types of tent, each with its own advantages:

CARE AND REPAIROF YOUR TENTIf you pay attention to the following tips, you

will be able to enjoy your TATONKA tent for

    a long time:

//After a trip never store your tent away while

its still damp. Even one or two days could

have disastrous consequences as the moisture

    can attack the coating.

// Dry your tent after every use even if it

hasnt been raining. Condensation occurs in

all weathers, regardless of where the tent is

pitched and what kind of tent it is.

//Never wash your tent in the washing

    machine.

//Never clean your tent with anything stronger

than a simple soap solution and never with

chemical products. Always make sure you

leave your tent to dry properly af ter use.

//Where possible pitch your tent in the shade.

UV radiation will speed up the ageing process

and can considerably shorten the lifespan of

    your tent.

//Always use a ground sheet with your tent.

This protects the base material from wear and

tear and keeps it water-tight for longer.

//After every use, check that the tent, poles

and accessories are complete, and make sure

there are no damages. Make any necessary

repairs preferably straight after your trip to

ensure you dont forget anythi ng.

// Replacement par ts can be purchased from

    specialist retailers.

Dome tents / Geodesic tents //These types of tent are designed to be self-supporting. They get

their shape from the frame arches, which cross at one or for geodesics at several points.

The construction is similar to a hemisphere and offers a high to very high stability in stormy

weather and snow. The floor area of a dome tent is smaller tha n comparable tunnel tents. Thisis why they are particularly suitable for rocky and mountainous regions. They also require

fewer tent pegs. In warm weather the inner tent can be al so erected on its own and offers an

airy and mosquito-free place to sleep.

Tunnel tents //This type of tent is supported by at least two frame arches positioned parallel

to one another. They have to be fixed lengthways, so that the tent holds its tunnel shape.

Of all the tent types, tunnel models offer the best use of space. Or in other words: in relation

to their size, tunnel tents are relatively light. The inner and outer tents are connected with

one another, which means that they can be pitched up quickly and easily. Plenty of space and

the fact that they can be simply put up and dismantled make tunnel tents the best choice forregions with inconsistent weather. When they are erected properly (with the narrow side fac-

ing the wind), tunnel tents are highly resistant to gusts and gales.
