Artist Statement

My clay work is intended to be useful - this is art that is meant to be touched. In the past everything we used in the home was made by hand. Today our homes are filled with stuff stamped out by machines. When we seek out handmade art we make our surroundings a little more human.

I throw on the potter's wheel or use slabs of clay to hand-build my clay forms - then I add that little something extra. Right now I am making lots of pottery inspired by gardens & forests. I also have a line of handmade ceramic jewelry featuring flowers, leaves & birds.

Tasha McKelvey always knew she

wanted to be an artist. Tasha started her art career as a potter’s assistant when she

was sixteen and was only nineteen she

knew she wanted to be a professional

ceramic artist. Tasha started her pottery business when she graduated from college and has been working away at it ever since.

Today Tasha creates small-scale pottery featuring tiny birds and other woodland creatures. She also makes a

line of ceramic jewelry. Tasha McKelvey sells her handmade pottery and ceramic jewelry in more than 50

shops & galleries across the country.

Tasha McKelvey lives and works in her 100-year-old house near the James River in Richmond, Virginia.

When Tasha isn’t making pottery, there’s a good chance you can find her outside in her garden.

Tasha McKelvey has worked with many brides to

help make their big day extra special. A few of Tasha’s past wedding

projects include: ceramic birdie cake toppers, bridesmaids’ jewelry,

individual bird figurines or ceramic magnets as

wedding favors, beer mugs as groomsmen gifts, and tiny bird bowls for each guest at a small dinner party

wedding reception.

Not to mention, giving Tasha’s pottery as a wedding gift. Tasha specializes in keepsake Love Bird Wedding

Bowls featuring a pair of birds perched on the lip, with the happy couple’s initials and wedding date carved

into the bottom of the bowl.

decrease her business’s environmental impact - from moving her studio to her home and buying from local suppliers to cut down on fuel usage to hand recycling her clay. Tasha’s gift and shipping packaging is made from recycled or re-purposed materials. Tasha’s studio

chooses eco-friendly materials whenever possible.
