Kailangan maging priorityang human rights dahil araw-araw natin itong dapat na-e-enjoy.

senforced disappearances anghindi nareresolba.Nangako naman si Bise

    Presidente Jejomar Binay, tu-

What are our national andlocal officials doing to pro-tect the Lumad? Te Lumad

evacuees, victims of internaldisplacement, have sought ref-uge in UCCP, yet these para-military groups again provedthat they will stop at nothingto harm them, even resortingto arson in this latest attack, pahayag ni Ridon.

pagkapangulo.

We know that all things work for good for those who loveGod, who are called according to his purpose.

    ROMANS 8:28

Huwag kang magnakaw!

    nese as Filipinos matatanto

Filipino with Chinese decent;a Chinese who happens to bea Filipino at a Chinese withFilipino decent.

to forget that Martial Law wasthe epitome of capitalism, po-litical oppression, and the deathof democracy.

Or are people just really try-ing to forget what happened?Or are we just afraid that allof these stories of torture andrape was true, that if a dictator-ship was to happen again in thecountry, that we have to expe-rience them all over again? Hasthe media really been the agentof false information? Or has italways been us, who are too gul-lible to believe in these made-upnarratives that surface throughour social media accounts?

We should have learnedenough by now: Martial Lawwasnt a fairy-tale story.

It was the start of a disaster.Martial Law will always remainwhat it is a debacle.

Iba naman ang paniniwalani John . Omohundro sapaniniwala ni Dr. Robert il-man. Sinabi niya sa kanyangmaikling sanaysay na Studyof the Overseas Chinese: An

city, and you will find some-one with an arm outstretched, mobile phone in hand, smil-ing widely and clicking away.Even Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi has embraced themedium, posting pictures on-line hes snapped with variousworld leaders.

But the pursuit of the mostepic selfie can have lethal con-sequences.

India is home to the high-est number of people whohave died while taking pho-tos of themselves, with 19 ofthe worlds 49 recorded selfie-linked deaths since 2014, ac-cording to San Francisco-baseddata service provider Priceo-nomics. Te statistic may inpart be due to Indias sheersize, with 1.25 billion citizens

and one of the worlds fastest-growing smartphone markets.Alarmed by the trend, Mum-

bai has declared 16 no-selfiezones across the city, as author-ities warn people against takingunnecessary risks.

Earlier this month, an18-year-old college student on

a class picnic lost his balancewhile taking a selfie atop a rocknear a dam near the centralIndian city of Nashik. He fellinto the water and drowned, along with a classmate whojumped in to try and save him.

Last month, an 18-year-oldwoman fell and drowned inthe sea while taking a photo ofherself at Mumbais BandstandFort, a popular tourist spot.

In Mumbai, police have de-clared selfies off-limits in areasperceived as risky - particularlyalong the coastline in spots

with no railings or barriers.Anyone venturing into off-

limits areas, even if they takeno photos, risks being slappedwith a fine of 1,200 rupees, orabout $18.

After the womans death lastmonth, the citys police con-ducted a survey to identifysuch dangerous places, policeofficial Dhananjay Kulkarnisaid. Te city also plans to runan awareness campaign.

Despite clearly marked signsdemarking the selfie-free zones, people can still be seen clickingaway, and often going to theedges or standing on ledges toget the most thrilling shots.

When you are travelingalone, and do not have any-one to take your pictures, thenits only selfie, said MurtuzaRangwala, a student in Mum-bai.

Mumbai psychologist KeertiSachdeva said she doesnt ex-pect the constant pursuit ofselfies to end any time soon, saying one probable reason isthe need for acceptance andlove.

You know people havethis sort of feeling in adoles-

cent age, especially that theyneed to get this acceptancefrom everyone, that I am a

smart person, I am a good-looking person, Sachdeva

When Love bugsI clearly remember a friend of mine last year. Hewas madly and hopelessly in love with a real ly pret-ty mestisa or simply put isay. He introducedisay to us feeling sooner or later she would be hisgirlfriend. However as the weeks passed by some-

thing disastrous happened. Te girl of his dreamsdumped him. Worse he was milked dry. He spentfor the needs of isays family. It even came tothe point where he would bail out isays nephewwhenever he got into trouble with the law. We keptreminding him that she was merely taking advan-tage of his feelings and that there was no love; foras long as she knew how much he was enamouredwith her then she would dig more into his pocket.

Tis intelligent man became dumb with his foolishemotion. He would always reason out that she wasjust testing him. We wanted to confront her whenwe found out that she got his tablet and his newIPhone. Alas! It was useless this guy was hexed bythis witch. Ten finally something happened, shebegan having calls and sooner she had a picture of ayoung man on her mobile phone. So isay dumpedhim like a hot potato! After all his foolish effortsand wasted money he lost her. He suddenly gotsick; he got himself bouts of drinking and cryingspree. Love can be negative at times.

Tis reminds me of the love life of famous peo-ple in history. Let me begin with Jose Rizal our veryown national hero. His first love is of course LeonorRivera, believe it not or Leonor was his cousin. Hefirst met her when he was taking up medicine inUS at his Uncle Antonios boarding house theCasa omasino. It was love at first sight. He wasamazed by her beauty and intelligence. She was a

well-rounded person. She could sing and play thepiano. She would often entertain great people intheir house. No wonder Jose Rizal was love struck. When Jose Rizal was practically forced into s tudy-ing abroad his brother Paciano made sure he would

not bid farewell to his motherand Leonor Rivera. Pacianoknew that his brother, Jose Ri-zal would cave in if ever thesewomen would shed tears on hisdeparture. So Rizals departurehad to be a secret. Unfortunatelyas Rizal stayed in Europe his re-lationship with Leonor hit rockbottom. It got worse when Rizalbecame famous with his contro-versial novels. Te Riveras wereafraid that anybody related toJose Rizal may get into trouble.

Leonors mother, Doa Silvestra, intercepted all the incoming let-ters of Rizal and bribed the postmaster general notto send Leonors letters to Rizal.Tus the lost communicationprompted Leonor to think itwas the end of her relationshipwith Rizal. She decided to mar-ry an English engineer namedHenry Kipping. However daysbefore the wedding, Leonors

mother became lax, a letterfrom Madrid came in through.Ten Leonor realized that JoseRizal was true to her after all.She confronted her motherabout the letters. Doa Silves-tra showed Leonor the lettersof Rizal. Now Leonor was ina dilemma whether she wouldpush through with her wedding since she was stillvery much in love with Rizal. In an act of supremesacrifice she chose to push through with the wed-ding to avoid family embarrassment. (Engagementswere announced a year ahead before the weddingdate during the 19th century). She gave her mothercertain conditions for her to push through with thewedding. She would never again sing and play thepiano. She also burned Rizals letters and placed theashes inside her wedding gown. On her deathbedLeonor requested that she be buried wearing the

clothes when she first met Jose Rizal and that someremaining letters of Rizal be placed inside her cof-fin. I can say Rizals first real love was more hurtingfor his lover, Leonor, than to himself.

Monarchs too cant escape the love bug. Hereis King Edward VIII of England in the 1930s. TeKing had met an American divorcee name WallisSimpson. During those times the Parliament had asay in the choice of the partner of the king becausethe reigning monarch is considered the Head of theChurch of England. When Prime Minister Stan-ley Baldwin heard rumours of the secret relation-ship between Edward and Willie; he confrontedthe Prince. PM Baldwin warned him that marry-ing a divorcee would violate the constitution of theChurch of England of which he is the titular headand would also create a parliamentary crisis. TePrime Minister gave the Prince three choices - giveup the idea of marrying, marry against the wishes

of the parliament or abdicate. So Prince Edwardhad to choose between her or his throne. Tenin a surprising announcement he told the British

public he would abdicate the throne for he couldno longer serve the duties of a King and that hewould marry the woman he love. Prince Edwardabdicated his throne on December 10, 1936 andbecame the Duke of Windsor. On June 3, 1937the Duke of Windsor married Wallis Simpson ona private ceremony. It was an unpopular decisionfor a well- loved monarch but admirable for somepeople. I wonder if anyone of us would be in hisshoe what would you pick your beloved or yourthrone?Anthony Lim

Why the Spurs will be scary come playoff timeTe present NBA spotlightand all the talk is focused onthe Golden State Warriors. Teimpressive start to the 2015-2016 by the defending cham-pions is unmatched, of courseled by the head of the snakeand their MVP - StephenCurry. However, the old andboring team, the San AntonioSpurs, just keeps flying underthe radar and are set to make

noise late in the season.Everythings quiet for the

Spurs. Tey do what they do.Tey may have the oldest agein the league, in average at 30.1years old as a team, but theyhave been the model of consist-ency in recent NBA memory.Despite the Warriors grabbingall the attention to their superb36-2 start(as of presstime), the

Spurs are breathing in theirnecks, just three games behindat 33-6.

But how are they doing this?Going on a little flashback,

the Spurs won free agency by amile. Tey lost some key piecesfrom their 2014 champion-ship to acquire the biggest freeagent last season in LaMarcusAldridge. Tey followed it upby extending one of the best

perimeter defending duo inthe league, Kawhi Leonardand Danny Green to multi-year extensions. And to top itoff, David West turned downa $12m deal from the IndianaPacers to finally get a chance towin the ring from a legit title-contender.

All these names, includingseveral returnees, are underthe call of one of the most re-

spected coaches in the league,Greg Popovich. All these off-season transactions speak vol-ume about the Spurs system.Te sacrifice portion of theSpurs started with their cor-nerstone, im Duncan takinga 2-year $10m deal to openup cap space for said players tocome and play for them. Teirsavvy, yet still reliable veteran,Manu Ginobili also signed acheap 6-million deal to helpthe Spurs. Wow.

Numbers wont lie as SanAntonio is still a threat to any-one is the league. Te Spurs

rank second in total assists pergame(25.5) behind the Warri-ors(29.0). Tey have the bestdefensive rating at 93.4 andoverall net rating at 15.0. Ofcourse, their league-leading de-fense as of now is led by theirrising star Kawhi Leonard, who by the way, plays only 33minutes a game compared tothe rest of the team, who allgets less than 30. Tis tells a

lot about how Greg Popovichshuffles his players efficiently, while getting their legs healthylate in the season.

Te Spurs are unforgiv-ing and the way they are dis-mantling the other teams intheir wins are eye-opening.In their victories, they beattheir opponents(in the first 39games of the season) by a mar-

gin of 17.8 points. Tis resultsto their core crew to get theirrest and even sit out the entirefourth quarter in blowouts. And by the way, their secondand third unit are no pushovers.

Furthermore, everyone re-members how heartbreakingthey were eliminated last yearagainst the Los Angeles Clip-pers in seven games in the firstround of the playoffs. Playing

in NBA in general(with nowthe Eastern Conference lead-ing the West standings-wise)requires a tremendous amountof effort, toughness and health.

im Duncan and the restof his beloved Spurs are onceagain denied of the chance ofmaintaining their champion-ship status, and defend theirNBA title against Chris Paulsgame-winner last season. Dun-

can wont simply allow to leavehis legacy that way. Instead,he wants to prove in his twoyears(or last) extension thathe could win back-to-back.Teres nothing more to provein Duncans fruitful career. Butas a winner as he is, everyoneknows, he wants to put the ic-ing on the cake on that way.

Well, if the trend continuesthis season, the San AntonioSpurs will wound up to be thesecond team not just in thewest, but in the entire NBA.Tey will gain homecourt ad-vantage, wherein they are unde-

feated at the moment, and ulti-mately can book the west finalsseat against powerhouses Golden

State and Oklahoma City.Te Spurs have one of thetoughest round-up schedulein the 82-game stretch, as 16of their last 18 games will beagainst tough western confer-ence teams, which include onegame against the Tunder, andthree against the defendingchampions GSW. However, the team will once again entertheir annual rodeo road trip

on the second week of Febru-ary, in which they further bond

their team and improve theirchemistry as a unit. Tey usu-ally gather in this handful of

successive road games to gearthemselves up in the postsea-son. Look out.

By that time, Kawhi Leon-ard probably gets his first timeAll-Star game recognition andcontinues to be conversationfor league MVP. Danny Greenfinally breaks out of his shoot-ing slump, while LaMarcusAldridge fits in the system per-fectly. On a side note, Patty

Mills, Boris Diaw, David West,Kyle Anderson, Jonathan Sim-

mons, and Boban Marjanovicall fit the teams style of playwell, and could already be on

par against other NBA teamsstarting crew.Majority are speculation and

forecast at this point. But oncethey peak at the right moment, this well-oiled Spurs teamcould get their coveted sixthring and continue to writebeautiful tales on their storiedfranchise. Were nearly halfwaythrough the season and a lotof things can happen at this

    point. Stay tuned.Jan Gonza-les *stats from NBA.com*
