Efficient water and electricity use

Possible actions to be taken:Harvesting rain water on roof and channeling it into

tanks for use in toiletsSolar panels

Reparation of damaged tapsSwitching off bulbs, fans, computers & AC when not in

useSensitise whole school about reducing consumption of

water and electricity

PRIORITY !!

Efficient water and electricity use

Step 1: Meeting with teachers of Environment Club and Green School Team

Step 2: Meeting with student Councils and Class Captains Step 3: Create awareness among all students

1. Pamphlets and poster competition2. Film show “An Inconvenient Truth”

3. Assembly talkStep 4: Survey on a daily basis and monitor bills

Step 5: Request administration Office and computer labs to switch off AC and computers when not in use

Meeting of GS team every Tuesday to give a feedback

Problems encountered during action planning:

CEB bill was not availableStudents often failed to switch off lights when

classes were unattended during first term

Linking with curriculum:A major topic in Biology, Chemistry and General

Paper Syllabus

Standardising and sustaining:The above actions are being encouraged both at

school and at home through students. To have a better indication of a change in the

consumption of water and electricity, we’ll take reading from the meter reader rather than from the bill.

The winning posters will be photocopied and affixed in the village of Plaine-Magnien.

Eventually, we’ll try to get sponsors to help in the purchase of solar panels and the necessary equipments required for harvesting rain water.

Page 14: Tap leakage CWA bill too high Wastage of electricity( fans, lights and computers were left on when not in use) Accumulation of large amount of waste

Results achieved:CWA bill has decreased from Rs 9540 to Rs 7146.

COMPOSTINGSteps:1. Cleaning and preparation of compost bin:• Washing and holes were made for constant aeration• Branches were put at the bottom • Grass cuttings from school gardener and organic waste from bins were put in

compost bin• Students were informed to bring vegetables and fruit cutting from home• Compost bin was filled with vegetable cuttings, fruit peelings, tea powder,

bread, etc…• Compost bin was covered

Page 16: Tap leakage CWA bill too high Wastage of electricity( fans, lights and computers were left on when not in use) Accumulation of large amount of waste

2. Posters were designed to inform students not to throw plastics, citrus fruits which may prevent growth of the micro organisms.

Bin is stirred once a week and is also filled constantly

Page 17: Tap leakage CWA bill too high Wastage of electricity( fans, lights and computers were left on when not in use) Accumulation of large amount of waste

Difficulties:1. Not enough materials were obtained to fill

the bin at once

2. Students were throwing citrus fruits, plastic bags in the bin

3. Manure was not obtained as they could have helped in starting the decomposition in the compost bin as it already contains micro organisms

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Steps:• Endemic and medicinal plants were requested from forestry department• Two areas were identified:

1. endemic corner2. medicinal corner

• The selected areas were cleaned by staff members• Sponsor was obtained from Mon Desert Mon Tresor for the purchase of

fence • Fencing was done around both corners• Lower secondary students were allocated specific plant that they have

to maintain(one plant per two students)• Scientific names of plants will be put on cards and tagging will be done

after identification of plant by forestry officer• Each student will get a plant that she will grow at home.

SEGREGATION OF WASTES

Steps :• 3 bins were allocated per class: 1. Green (organic waste)2. plastic3. Paper

Page 22: Tap leakage CWA bill too high Wastage of electricity( fans, lights and computers were left on when not in use) Accumulation of large amount of waste

• ‘green’ waste are sent for composting• Plastic will be recycled. Power plastic limited

was requested to collect the plastic. No response yet obtained.

• A large amount of paper accumulated in administration office has already been sent for recycling

Activities done on the occasion of the World Environment Day (celebrated on the 4th June at school) : • wall painting of the logo UNEP for WED 2010• talk about the World Environment day during the

assembly• Winning teams of poster competition were rewarded.• ten endemic plants sponsored by the Vanilla Crocodile

Park.• further ten plants obtained from the forestry

department. • One student was chosen from each class and was

given a particular plant which they were asked to place in the endemic corner.
