Daryl Impey, who hails from Glenvista and currently rides for the Orica Green edge Pro Tour team, proved a strong point by winning his second consecutive South African Individual Elite Time Trial Title held on Thursday 05 February in Nelspruit/Mbombela. Conditions were extremely hot and humid on the day but Impey managed to average an incredible 48km/hr speed to finish the distance in 53min 23sec. He was nearly two minutes faster than the second-placed man. This decisive victory proved without a doubt that he must be regarded as South Africa’s best cyclist currently. Impey, who currently plys his professional trade on the roads of Europe, spent the entire December/January period preparing diligently on his home turf, namely on the roads out South of Johannesburg together with other top southern cyclists like JP van Tonder and Calvin Beneke. Impey will also be competing in the 180km road event and will be hoping to do the “Double,” which so narrowly eluded him in 2014. The tough course, held over 13 laps of an undulating 14km circuit, suits the super-fit Impey and he must feel confident of his chances to win the second Gold. Impey was also the first SA rider ever to hold the coveted yellow jersey in the 2013 Tour De France. Young paracyclist Dylan D Silva (also from the South) managed to secure a bronze medal in the men’s C-5 road category in a time of 1hr 25min also in Nelspruit. These SA Road Championships started on Wednesday 04 February and, still with a long programme to go, it is hoped that a few more medals will be won by our southern riders in this prestigious event.

In Gauteng, Sanral is one of the three most hated parastatals – right up there with Eskom and SARS. So, with elections just around the corner in 2016, it is highly likely that e-tolls will be cancelled. This will have a few implications: the contract with the Austrian supplier of our e-toll infrastructure will have to be re-negotiated; e-tag holders will be angry and our gantries will be useless. Or will they?

According to my mother, when I was knee high I told a paediatrician that I wanted to become a rugby player when I was older (true story). Instead, I chose to become a wordsmith, a journalist with big dreams.This odd yet amusing confession appears in the opening lines of my resume – a clear sign that I’m not afraid to be funny. Apart from humour, I relish in hard facts, and most importantly, the truth – which is rule number one of a journalist’s job.After completing Matric in 2006 I set off to study BA Journalism for three years at the University of Johannesburg and completed my fourth Honours year thereafter. Ever since, my love and appreciation for journalism has ceased to fade and I find myself constantly pushing my goals to all kinds of limits in this vast, yet tough, media industry of ours.I thrive on expressing myself creatively through my words in all aspects and on all platforms. In my career thus far, my experience has been in magazines, writing across a plethora of genres from celebrity, lifestyle and entertainment to business, tourism, environmental and property.My new adventure is, of course, community newspaper journalism. ESKOM: DESTROYING JOBS, CREATING POVERTY Letter by Brian Johnson

Soon it will be election season again and ruling party politicians will again be bombarding the electorate with promises of job creation and poverty alleviation. The chief opposition will again explain how they can deliver job creation and poverty alleviation better than the ruling party, while our MPs in red will promote nationalisation

and minimum wages. Voters since 1994 have been promised the moon and the stars; but, again, in 2014 Eskom is delivering darkness. It will not be long before loadshedding will lead to jobshedding as supermarkets are forced to dump rotten produce, restaurants and hairdressers close their doors and factories have to stop production lines. Sadly, small businesses – which are the greatest job creators – will be affected the most. The fact of the matter is that, while governments are unable to create jobs, they are often extremely good at

destroying them. There is a huge difference between an entrepreneurial mindset and a bureaucratic one. The former is dynamic, innovative and free-spirited; while the latter is methodical, stuck-in-a-rut and rule-bound. The former pushes the envelope; the latter pushes pens. The former works for as long as it takes; the latter works 9-to-5 with compulsory tea-breaks and lunch-breaks. The job of government is not to create jobs but to create a job-friendly infrastructure. This means doing boring things like keeping the lights on, delivering the mail, putting criminals behind bars, educating children to an acceptable level and maintaining the roads.In short, government needs to make business as easy and cheap as possible to do. This will attract more investment and entrepreneurs to our country and jobs will start creating themselves.Of course, this will involve some short-term sacrifices for the sake of some long-term gains.

The amount of litter in our city and suburbs has become quite atrocious. As a caring and responsible resident, it’s concerning and heartbreaking to drive past gutters and pavements that are filled with all sorts of litter and waste! While the City of Johannesburg and Pikitup have slowly introduced the Separation at Source recycling project, residents seem reluctant to recycle – I hardly see those

(provided) additional black wheelie bins with green lids, clear bags, and orange bags on pavements. With bad service delivery, power outages and water shortages having become very problematic in our communities, I personally feel that litter is an equally disturbing matter. Let’s all try to recycle and keep our suburbs clean.

One title that springs to mind is: Giant Zombie Rat Apocalypse.4. Giant solar panels could be mounted on Sanral’s white elephants so that they can help Eskom instead of draining power from the national grid. 5. Advertising billboards could be hung from

the gantries at fees that would re-pay Sanral’s loans.6. They could be used to take group selfies.7. Vegetable gardens could be planted on top of the gantries so that scientists could monitor the effect of carbon emissions on plant life.8. They could be used to re-charge electric cars or bicycles.9. Because of their Wi-Fi capacity, gantries could be re-located to schools without access to the internet. 10. The Gauteng Department of Education should run a competition for high school students to come up with uses for the gantries – to stimulate interest in science and technology.

In 1985, I ran into trouble while doing a bench press - which ended up embarrassing me when the only female training alongside the men in the gym easily removed the weight from my chest. This experience left me red-faced, with a bruised ego. Back then, most men, including myself, believed that women belonged strictly in the aerobics section, but this incident changed my thinking about women and weight training. Not much has changed in 2015, with the majority of females still doing cardio exercises. The myth that weight training will make women muscle-bound is far from the truth. Females produce a hormone called oestrogen, which is the opposite of the testosterone found in males. Oestrogen production is the key factor that prevents females from growing big muscles. Weight training will activate their muscles, increase their strength, help with fat burning and improve the overall look of the body. All the top Miss Figure and Fitness champions owe their fantastic looking

bodies to weight training

and a balanced diet. It is also very important for ladies

to train as heavily as possible, without

compromising good form. I have seen many women using

light weights with very high reps, which is a total waste of time. I have successfully trained many women over the years, including Elsa de Wit from Premium Fitness Centre in Meyersdal, whose body has improved tremendously since being introduced to weight training. I would like to challenge all women reading

this article to enter the tame TIMES 12 week trans-formation challenge to improve their bodies. I have personally designed the ultimate ladies training DVD, including a healthy grocery list and training manual to get you going.

Several upmarket and large-scale residential developments have gone up in the past 10 years and more are being developed and planned. A retail development like Mall of the South is a driver for future residential and commercial developments in an area,” believes Marcus.In terms of traffic and congestion, Marcus says, “A full study was done on the traffic flow prior to finalising the design of the development and also on the parking flow on the property. We are very aware of this – one of the sensitive touch points for a successful retail development is ease of access to and from the mall, so we have spent a lot of time and effort to ensure ease of access from all the roads and to avoid traffic congestion.”With 154 stores planned and over 3 000 parking bays at launch size, the Mall of the South is expected to open on 24 September 2015.

Modern, urban life is lonely. Many of us are too disconnected to greet each other; often we do not know even the names of our neighbours. We may have hundreds of friends on Facebook, but still feel a lack of belonging. There is one guaranteed way, however, to make your cellphone ring – miss a car payment.Feeling as if you are just a number is so 1980s - these days, in the twenty-teens, you are more likely to feel like just another debit order. Of course debit orders provide convenience for customers and make it easier for corporates to do business, thus reducing costs. The trouble is that, when slip-ups occur, customers suffer. When debit orders are deducted twice in one month by mistake, very often it is the customer who has to wade through endless call-centre press-a-number options that devour air-time until he or she hears a real voice at the other end of the line, only to be told to “wait 90 days and you will be refunded.”Sometimes, terms and conditions of contracts are even changed and the poor payer of the debit order is not even informed, let alone

consulted. The Consumer Protection Act often seems to have done more to increase the length of contracts that armed security providers or panel-beaters expect their customers to sign than to protect consumers.Gyms are another typical example. A member who complains about poorly maintained equipment is likely to be asked by management to exercise patience and understanding because renovations are underway or the budget has been exhausted. Imagine if management were asked to be as understanding when members needed to buy new shoes or had a difficult month. It is hardly likely that you would be allowed to train after a debit order bounce - even if your geyser burst and your car battery died in the same month.The amount of legal muscle that corporates are able to flex is hugely disproportionate to that of the average consumer. Corporates have whole legal departments while consumers have a lunch-hour and a little air-time. Any dispute between the two is like a weight-lifting contest between a body-builder on steroids and a five-year-old girl. Hellopeter.com here we come!

Through meaningful partnerships with the private sector, the City of Johannesburg is developing housing developments in the South in order to correct the spatial legacy of the past and bring communities together.Currently in South Africa, there is a looming 2.3-million housing backlog and the demand for decent living units is swelling. Through the leadership of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Mpho Parks Tau, the City of Johannesburg is addressing this challenge by developing and delivering social and affordable housing projects to the city’s communities.Positively, the City of Johannesburg is willing to partner with the private sector on the

development of such housing projects, with one notable scheme set to rise in the South.Situated in the South Hills precinct in Johannesburg South, the South Hills integrated mixed income housing development is a joint venture between the City of Johannesburg and Standard Bank, with Calgro M3 as its development partner and implementing agent.The project comprises approximately 95 hectares while the balance of the land, approximately 100 hectares, will be developed into park facilities. The latest feasibility indicates that the project will realize 5 327 units in total: 2 242 fully subsidised BNG units, 1 525 freehold affordable houses, 1 560 social, finance linked individual subsidy programme (FLISP) and gap housing units. The housing will be developed in several

phases over five to six years.Positioned 6km south of the Johannesburg CBD, the development will be in close proximity to business nodes, amenities, places of work and public transport systems. The project is also characterized by the provision and integration of various land uses, accommodating families from different income categories.“The City of Johannesburg has a long- standing relationship with Standard Bank and the fact that we have been able to partner with them and Calgro M3 to develop the South Hills project, is testament to the potential that public-private partnerships have to unlock value in the city’s property landscape,” said Mayor Tau. “This project is about driving transformation and looking at closer integration across the

different historic communities, ultimately for the benefit of the residents who reside in these parts of the city,” added Mayor Tau.On completion, the South Hills development will provide different typologies of housing as well as offer mixed-use business centres, crèches, religious sites, a community centre, schools, various recreational parks as well as public sports facilities. It will include the rehabilitation of the existing public swimming pool and park. South Hills is estimated to boast a value in excess of R1.95-billion. The City of Johannesburg will invest R750-million in the form of grants and subsidies into the project between now and 2020, the development’s scheduled completion date.

It was reported on Thursday that Sapa, the 70-year-old South African news agency, is to close.Sapa, which was started as a non-profi t entity in 1938, has been facing closure or change since its four funding members, Times Media Group, Caxton, Independent Newspapers and Media24, started pulling out of the arrangement more than a year ago. “The funding model for Sapa has basically come to an end so the board had to take tough decisions,” the former board chairman, Tim du Plessis, told Grubstreet in July 2014 on the decision to look into whether outside parties might be interested in taking it over in some way.Late last year, Agence France-Presse’s (AFP’s) Southern African offi ce pulled out of Sapa. Plans are afoot to transform Newlands Cricket Ground into a precinct of blue-chip offi ces, doctors’ rooms and places of entertainment.Nabeal Dien was appointed chief executive of the Western Province Cricket Association last month, and is helping to steer the ground into a new era.Of the stadium’s 114 corporate suites, only 39 are in use – and only on the 20-odd match days a year.
