HAPPY SOCCER PLAYERS: The boys receiving their training gift from Boots for Dreams.

Jacksons Drift’s own soccer teamThanks to Rene Parker from Lerato Educational Centre a team of disadvantaged boys from the squatter camp Jacksons Drift in Eikenhof have been brought together to make up a soccer team. The team members range from 6 to 14 years of age.

“We were truly blessed to have Tanya and Pano Dimas from “Boots for Dreams” arrange a

donation from Murray and Roberts. Each boy got handed a brand new pair of soccer boots, socks and vests. Their soccer coach, Ronal, was handed

100 cones and 20 high quality balls for

In April 2013, the JSPCA made a change to their look and corporate identity. Happy, the dog rescued by Inspector Lucas from a water reservoir, was the reason for this change. Happy himself, as well as the process in which Happy was rescued and re-homed, embodied what the JSPCA believes in and what they strive to achieve through the work they do – uplifting the welfare of animals and creating those ‘Happy’ endings/beginnings.Uplifting the welfare of animals can be achieved in the following ways: • JSPCA team members living up to their core values of professionalism, respect, education, dedication, support and co-operation throughout their daily activities.• Providing much needed veterinary treatment

to people living in resource poor areas. • Educating community, supporters and fellow pet owners on how they can make a difference in the lives of the animals they come in contact with on a daily basis.JSPCA’s new website will give you information on their daily activities, provide you with information on pet care and the laws pertaining to animal welfare. The

new functionality in the animals available for adoption gallery, allows you to share the photos of the animals available for adoption on your facebook and twitter pages. You can also now donate via a secure payment gateway quickly and easily, with peace of mind that your details are safe and secure. JSCPA would like you to know that not only will your donation directly benefit the animals in your area but through a sharing agreement between all SPCAs nationwide. a portion will be used in other, less fortunate areas to benefit animals over a wider area. The JSCPA feels sure you will approve of this outreach initiative and wish to thank you most sincerely for supporting our SPCA and the movement generally.Visit the new website and make your contribution today. www.jhbspca.co.za.

UPGRADE: The new JSCPA website.

To pay or not to paySo guess what I received in my post box? A tax invoice and correspondence from SANRAL. I received the first sms on 2 January. stating that I owe R99.60. A second sms came through on 10 January with the very same sms. However, the tax invoice I received is for R14.28. I shall add that the tax invoice included two pages plus an extra page of a transaction report, which shows my vehicle passing through a gantry, then the correspondence consists of two pages and the account statement is two pages - all for the same gantry. A total of seven pages plus postage fees must surely amount to more than my R14.28 owed.Maybe that is why in the sms it says I owe R99.60 (six times more) in order for SANRAL to cover the cost of all this paper. tame TIMES sent the press office of NRA (National Roads Agency) a list of questions concerning payments and the process of the e-toll system on 8 January. I have received several read receipts of the e-mail, yet three weeks later still no answers. The first reader came in with his complaint about his account and I bet you he is not the last reader.I like to think of myself as a good citizen. I pay every traffic fine I get (much to my father’s dismay). I prefer doing things the right (legal) way. This must be the inner nerd in me, however I am not eager to pay e-tolls. Yet this leaves me with conflicting feelings: guilt because I am not abiding by the so called rules and anger because I have to pay more money while government squanders millions.I am now avoiding highways where I can, however I attend a church in Bedfordview and go there three times a week, so basically I am now paying to go to church. I avoid the gantry just before Voorttrekker off-ramp by driving through Alberton and only get on the highway at Voortrekker, but I haven’t come up with an alternate route coming back. Taking back routes at night as a single woman isn’t exactly safe.My question is, to pay or not to pay?@laurellewilliam /[email protected]

A male suspect (35), who has been linked to seven cases of housebreaking and one attempted murder case, was arrested after a breakthrough when a residence in Swartberg Street, Glenvista was broken into on 30 December last year while the resident family was away. One of the suspected vehicles used, a white VW Caddy, returned to the scene and was later involved in a pursuit. The Glenvista Community Forum (GCF) transmitted an alert to residents to look out for this vehicle that day. The case was i n v e s t i g a t e d by Mondeor S A P S and the accused w a s traced to a house in Lawn

Street, Rosettenville, where stolen property was recovered. The accused is linked to six other cases of housebreaking and one case of attempted murder and is remanded in custody while further investigations continue. It is likely the suspect’s girlfriend will be charged as an accessory in the Glenvista housebreaking charge. The suspect appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on seven counts of housebreaking and one count

of attempted murder. The GCF has said on their Facebook page that they will be keeping a watching brief on the accused’s appearances in court to ensure that bail is opposed, due to the compelling evidence against the accused. This arrest was the result of determined and quick teamwork between the Glenvista resident concerned, the GCF (GV1 & GV2) and Mondeor SAPS Cst Thwala. Well done to all parties involved.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the custodians responsible for maintaining parks, street trees, conservation areas and cemeteries is appealing for patience from residents as it resolves its seasonal backlogs.“We’re appealing to residents to please be patient as we methodically work towards resolving the peak summer maintenance backlogs,” Sakhile Maphumulo, general manager for regional maintenance said.Maphumulo said summer rains significantly affect City Parks and Zoo’s ability to deliver efficient service. This is largely due to the warm and wet weather, which:

• Accelerates the growth rate of long grass, shrubs and trees;• Impedes on work schedules as employees are not authorised to operate machinery in the rain;• Hinders contractors as it is not cost-effective to commission work in the intermittent rain;• Results in operator downtime as the overgrowth places extra pressures on machinery;• Increases the time it takes to maintain open spaces with long overgrowth;• Generates an increase in the number of residents requesting street tree pruning; and• Boosts the number of visitors to the city parks, resulting in added strain on playground infrastructure and increased bylaw transgressions such as littering and illegal parking.

The seasonal challenges are further related to an ever-increasing portfolio of public open spaces.Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is appealing to residents to look after pavements next to their homes; this will go a long way towards alleviating some of the pressures on the maintenance team and help them attend to problems on time. This will also allow City Parks and Zoo to focus on parks, cemeteries and street trees that require more specialised maintenance services.Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo would like to commend residents who are going the extra mile and have maintained and beautified their verges.

Please be patient

Residents needing assistance with maintenance can call 011 375 5555 or e-mail [email protected]. Maintenance schedules can be viewed on www.jhbcityparks.com.

The City of Johannesburg adopted its first Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Frameworks in 2009, which guides the planning and implementation of NMT infrastructure throughout the City. NMT infrastructure can

be categorised as cycle lanes, sidewalks and other supporting facilities. The aim of NMT infrastructure is not only to address transportation related issues but social, environment and economic issues in the City.

During the City’s previous financial year, the City of Johannesburg Department of Transportation commis-sioned a feasibility study on existing NMT infrastructure around the existing Rea Vaya BRT Station, with the view of evaluating and improving pedestrian accessibility to the BRT Stations Precincts. The outcomes of the study were comprehensive route layout plan of areas that needs NMT infrastructure. COJ Transportation has appointed the JDA as an implementing agent on this project. Extent of the works:The scope of works entails construction of pedestrian

walkways/sidewalks, cycle lanes, soft and hard landscaping and street light upgrades. It is envisaged that 20% of the scope of works will be executed by minimum three (2No) local SMMEs under the supervision of the Main Contractor. All interested SMMEs living in Ward 54 are to please contact Clr Sergio dos Santos on [email protected]. The extent of work around these stations covers a radius of 500m and it is along the following streets:The implementation of this project will start this financial and be completed early next financial year. The construction is envisaged to commence in February 2014. General workers will be sourced from the affected Ward. All residents, businesses and interested parties are to attend a public meeting to discuss the extents of works around Basothong and Mavumbi stations on 30 January at 19:00 at the Crown Gardens Recreational Centre, Ulster Street corner Mourne Avenue in Crown Gardens.

The Miss Earth South Africa organisation has been hard at work distributing stationery to underprivileged schools through their Stationery Drive programme. In 2012 they were able to distribute stationery packs to 12 575 learners, and last year 13 224 packs were distributed. S t a t i o n e r y sets are the easiest and most logistically uncomplicated to distribute. In 2012 and 2013 the greatest contribution and difference was made by the selfless contributions of hundreds of South Africans who participated by collecting from those around them, and going out to buy packs of stationery, books, diaries and files.The programme focuses on children from underprivileged schools, and they also aim to provide stationery that is new, useable and for which there is a demand. This year the organisation aims to maintain or exceed the previous years’ figures, as it has already received requests for more than 7000 stationery packs before the end of last year. A number of schools in the Gauteng region have already been identified as the first schools that will benefit from the campaign, which is now in its 8th year. Some of the areas that will also benefit from the programme include: Orange Farm, Alexandra, Vosloorus and Thembisa, to name a few. “We understand the need for and value of education and we have visited primary schools in underprivileged areas where up to 40 learners share one pencil in a classroom;

this is not conducive to a healthy learning environment. Public contributions make it possible for us to equip these learners with

the stationery they need to make the most of their education,” says

the Miss Earth South Africa National Director, Catherine Constantinides.

Ella Bella, the Miss Earth South

explains that many of the children

were so overwhelmed with joy and pride to have their own stationery sets that during distributions last year many children asked if they had to give it back. Contributions to the Stationery Drive can be made by donating stationery or money towards the Miss Earth South Africa organisation. However, please do not send broken stationery.

The delight of Jiten patel is the culmination of several years of hard work, dedication and absolute perseverance.Jiten Patel is an ex-pupil at the Forest Town School for Children with Special Needs, and he is currently engaged in the Work Experience Programme (WEP@work) at the school. Jiten is determined to create

a viable future for himself regardless of the restrictions of his disabilities, and he has proven the amazing fact that dreams can come true. After completing the two week basic IT course at The Papillon Foundation (ICDL E-Learner) situated in Rosettenville, Jiten decided to register for the prestigious ICDL (International Computer Driver Licence) Core Programme at Papillon in 2007. After six years of dedication and dogged perseverance, Jiten has successfully graduated.“Sickness, strife, operations and a host of other setbacks could not deter this youngster in his aim to complete the ICDL course and every night after watching his favourite TV programme, Isidingo, he would retire to his room to study ICDL until the wee

hours of the morning,” Marian Smith, Papillon management said. The ICDL course consists of seven independent modules. This is where a lesson in life is shown for all to learn from, as whenever Jiten failed one of the module exams, he would simply return time and again until he passed the module.

Jy voel dalk soos ‘n nuwe sikspens!

As the year begins one is inspired to tap into the general aspiration of the entire human race - personal success and excellence.Standing at the back of a long bank queue, I had a thought that basically paralleled the situation I found myself in with where I and 7 billion+ humans want to be - at the front of life’s queue. After a short consideration, I came to the obvious conclusion that if I want 2014 to be the year for me, I’d need to get

in line today. I’d need to get my plans and checklists in place today, because June will be too late and, as Aristotle alluded to in my opening quote, without a proper road-map I and we will always see excellence in others, but never be it.

Street lights on since ChristmasAnonymous writes:

Depression (1)when leading a discussion on depression, the term ‘depression’ needs to be clarified. we can distinguish between three different concepts of depression, namely symptom, syndrome and disorder. A symptom is normally related to the environment and are short lived. This describes the common sad or down feelings all of us occasionally experience in life, caused by minor events. A syndrome encompasses deeper feelings of sadness and are less common than symptoms. This kind of depression also

impacts a person’s life on various other levels, such as motivation and sleep, and is normally caused by more significant life events such as loss of a loved one through death or divorce. This kind of depression can be successfully overcome with therapy. Care should however be taken if the symptoms persist beyond a reasonable adjustment period following the loss of a loved one. Next week more on the disorder.

There was a decrease in housebreaking and theft, theft of m/v and robbery with firearm cases.“The station wishes to thank all the law enforcement groups for assistance during 2013, namely Flying Squad, TRT, JMPD, K9, community patrollers and reservists. We are urging the community to continue assisting us in the fight against crime,” Cst Bila said.Moffatview SAPS would like to advise the community at large that when residents go on holidays, even for a weekend, someone needs to occupy the house during their absence.

Recreating the King of Rock ‘n Roll, the one and only Elvis Presley, is either a hit or a miss. For Nathan Belt from the USA, however, this is second nature, and he is touring the world reliving the music of Elvis Presley. Belt is currently performing in South Africa at the Joburg Theatre; so if you are an Elvis fan and have dreamt of watching him live in concert, then Elvis - The Show is a must see. When the red velvet curtains lift and Belt appears on stage, it is easy to imagine that one has time-travelled

back to the 20th century, to the golden years of Elvis Presley. Belt’s sleek black hair gelled up, his rolling hips and bobbing legs when he does the twist, and the familiar deep voice when he says “Thank you very much” were spot-on. His costumes were also reminiscent of each era in Elvis’ music career - from the white socks with black pants and the grand blazers in his younger days, to the white glitter one-pieces reminiscent of his Las Vegas performances.Belt and his band covered a wide range of songs, which Belt sang live, from the rocking 50s right through to the 68 Comeback Special performance, and the more recent lighter Gospel songs. A few classics that were performed at the opening night included: Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Blue Suede Shoes, Can’t Help Falling in Love, The Wonder of You, and Dixieland. Belt’s energetic performance ensured that he captured each and every audience member’s undivided attention. He frequently interacted with the audience and gave out many scarves to excited female fans. What made the show especially memorable was the many references made to Elvis and his life throughout the show. Belt often explained the history behind a song, which made the lyrics very insightful and meaningful. Belt succeeded in presenting the audience with a sincere celebration and tribute to Elvis, instead of becoming just another imitation of Elvis.Elvis - The Show will be showing until 2 February in The Mandela at Joburg Theatre. Seat prices range from R100 to R250. Tickets are on sale at www.joburgtheatre.com, or by phoning the theatre’s ticket line on 0861 670 670. There are also specials available for groups and senior citizens.

ALL SHOOK UP: A Nathan Belt passionately reliving the golden years of Elvis Presley.

Film has long become a part of Indian culture and with the cu-riosity growing in popular culture. The Indian International Film Festival, along with Ster-Kinekor and Utkarsh Projects, brings a line-up of a number of Indian films, spread across South Africa in Ster-Kinekor Cinemas. The opening film was Astu - Let it be, a Marathi film with a big heart and was screened at Ster-Kinekor The Zone@Rosebank. The film, directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar, and stars actors such as Dr Mohan Agashe, Iravati Harshe, Milind Soman, Amruta Subash, Nachiket Purnapatre, Devika Daftardar and Ila Bhate. The film centres on an old retired doctor who has Alzheimer’s and how this affects his environment and how his environment affects him. It also shares a familiar family struggle when dealing with a loved one that needs 24 hour care, and how a family experiences this in various ways. It explores how differently each family member copes with a sick loved one who does not know who he is.It’s a sweet story, with great acting that leaves you with a smile on your face and thinking the world still has so much to give. All this is given to us through the rich Marathi culture, customs and traditions that lift your soul. The audience had the chance to meet one of the stars, Amruta Sub-ash, who explained just how much the film means to her, “Film has a language that goes beyond languages.” South African actor Joe Mofela, who also attended the premiere, shared how much he loved the film and cinematography.

The sun greeted all the Fast One Mountain Biking Series riders on 12 January at the Lido Hotel as they competed in the summer edition. This is in stark comparison to previous years, when it rained. With the sun came plenty of late entries, pushing the total entries over 900 compared to last year’s 600. All these unforeseen additional cyclers forced the logistical resources to take strain and the start was delayed by 30 minutes. When speaking to Mr PJ Joynt, a member of the Spectrum Sport

management team who hosts the race, he said they had changed the final section from last year’s route to avoid riders having to go through the muddy section twice, if it had rained again. This infamous section caused plenty riders to have mechanical, especially rear derailleur, issues in the mud bath. Great results were achieved in Denmark. Shané qualified in the Adult 2 Section – small group and formation. For the small group Vision she obtained a gold medal, and for the formation Full Circle she obtained a silver medal. Her dancers qualified in the 16 and over section. Their small group Swag came 14th and the formation “Creed Elite” obtained 22nd place.

Due to this being a very young group with five members under the age of 16, it is an excellent achievement.Joshua Buys, a teacher and choreographer of Shané’s School of Dancing obtained seventh place with his Electric Boogie Solo.
