Doghouse 1: Reflections
• I have never used SketchUp before and was under the impression that it would be
hard, however the tools were easy to understand and I just needed to play around
and see how it functioned. Dog House 1 took me a whole class period, 3 hours.
• What I thought the main purpose of this assignment was to create a dog house yet
take it to a new level by expanding our knowledge of SketchUp and learning how to
separate each aspect of the house into separate layers and components.
• I had a lot of fun playing with color and seeing what kind of colors went with the dog
house, I also added brick, roofing, tile aspects into my design.
• Tools I used were: select, rectangle, measuring box, push/pull, arc, move/copy, scale,
tape measure, orbit, pan, zoom, and the paint bucket tool.
• I had a bit of trouble inserting the 3D warehouse trees and dogs yet found that it was
easier than actually creating a tree using lines and shapes.

Doghouse 1: Reflections (cont.)
• Right click dialog box was used to hide selected lines.
• Only 2D components from 3D Warehouse were used to maximize
computing speed. The oak tree was selected for its vibrant colors and
copied three times.
• Having to save 3 separate copies of the same SketchUp file (.png, .skp,
.jpg) was time consuming and extremely aggravating when I lost track of
where my files were going. However, being organized is important and just
having the actual file size of my upload portfolio, reduced would also be
very beneficial.

2.c. Produce a portfolio of work that chronicles student
learning throughout the semester
Yes

SLO 3: Accurately relate each aspect of the drawn visual
language system to three-dimensional reality and human
perception
Use of perspective view with entourage and shade and
shadows communicates the reality of Doghouse 1.
Inclusion of a human figure an other familiar forms gives a
credible scale to the doghouse form.
SLO 4: Visually and verbally explain the process of idea
development using graphic representation
The process of developing the doghouse included a series
of thinking and making cycles. With each completion of a
cycle, fragments and general notions eventually became
whole, unified, and represented a set of full design
intentions. Generating various views emphasized different
aspects of form, space, proportions, and composition of
design elements.
Doghouse 1: SLO Progress Report
SLO 5: Develop an awareness of the relationships
between graphic representations and fundamental design
principles and elements
This initial doghouse is obvious and literal with a
symmetrical organization of a gable roof, Dutch entry
door, and round rear window. This dominant use of
symmetry is balanced by an asymmetrical placement of
the chimney/fireplace and the brick covered dais. The
space below the maple trees creates an intimate context
for the doghouse.

Reflection:
To be honest, I feel like Doghouse 1 lacked the use of
Components, Layers, and Outliner dialog boxes however, even
though Doghouse 2 was systematically constructed using
Components, Layers, and Outliner dialog boxes I don’t
necessarily find it better. I feel like the design lost complexity.
I saw that the use of components really helped the way
Doghouse 2 was constructed because you could construct one
piece like the window and then after making that into a
component one can just import it using the components tab under
Window to the opposite side and rotating it to be a mirror image
or the previous one.
When it came time to show the different aspects of the design the
use of layers was convenient by being able to place each
different component into a layer (usually marked the same as
what its housing).
Within two iterations, I don’t think the second iteration shows
improvement in both design and construction. Although the
windows located on the gable roof on Doghouse 2 may be more
interesting because develops more complexity and use of tools
like layers.
Next step, Doghouse 3, iteration 3 (a mixture of both iterations)
will explore solar orientation and use of symmetry to convey
meaning.
Doghouse 2: Addition of Fido’s Bed

Doghouse 2: SLO Progress Report
SLO 1: Appropriately apply graphic tools, techniques, and conventions to create and communicate ideas.
1.a. Effective management of time & resources SketchUp: 1 hrs. + Portfolio: 1 hrs.
1.b. Draw & Think using analog tools NA
1.c. Draw & Think using digital tools Yes, when making the model construction
1.d. Use Architect’s Scale NA, I used the basic scale
1.e. Use Engineer’s Scale NA, I used the basic scale
1.f. Use Measurements dialog box Yes, when measuring the bed and making it symmetrical
1.h. Apply appropriate Perspective Drawing Technique Yes, to get the right perspective
1.i. Create Paraline Drawing(s) No, not appropriate for objectives
1.j. Create Orthographic Drawing(s) No, not appropriate for objectives
1.k. Understand and apply Shade & Shadow Yes, to show how this piece would look like in the “real
world” and to show how sun orientation and shadow can
contribute to the design phase and iterative process.
1.l. Incorporate entourage to enhance credibility Yes, from 3D Warehouse found now through components
under the Window tab.

Doghouse 2: SLO Progress Report SLO 2: Select and effectively use either manual or digital
means to explore, analyze, and document an evolution of
design ideas in architecture and interior design
2.a. Relate modes of representation; select and apply best
system to explore and communicate design intentions
Used perspective views and isometric views to
communicate and enhance the idea of doghouse 2, an
unrefined form of doghouse 1
2.b. Produce a set of architectural drawings to document a
case study
NA
2.c. Produce a portfolio of work that chronicles student
learning throughout the semester
Yes, a bit late but there nonetheless

SLO 3: Accurately relate each aspect of the drawn visual
language system to three-dimensional reality and human
perception
Doghouse 2 is an iteration of Doghouse 1 in which
refinements to the overall form were the objectives.
SLO 4: Visually and verbally explain the process of idea
development using graphic representation
Using components, layers, outliner, and scenes to
systematically develop Doghouse 2 also provided more
insights and control over the design process. Scenes are
used to explain the constituent phases of construction to
others. See p. 16
SLO 5: Develop an awareness of the relationships
between graphic representations and fundamental design
principles and elements
Doghouse 2: Construction
Sequence using Scenes
1/5/14 16
Each image is a scene that corresponds to a layer Images are simply exported 2D images in .png format if the piece is
to be printed and in .jpg format for lower quality pictures yet easier on file size.
Note that a different color was assigned to each layer where the colors are radically different to show emphasis on
different layers. Compare with images on page 10. Layer color was turned off on image sequence on page 11
