Hola! I’m Tamara this is my work, its a mixed bag from my free flowing illustrations to my griddy design work. I’ve been working in Dublin for the past year as a graphic designer with Dunnes Stores (who need no introduction). The year’s experience has taught me loads about being a designer and has helped me to develop my skills. They say its a bad idea but I live to work and I love every minute! Most of the projects in this portfolio have seen me with a serious case of red-eye at some stage.

I hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I did creating it! Hasta la vista amigos.

In the year 2020 Cod will be extinct. This piece shows five

statistics on the extinction of cod. These are placed in a

fish and chip wrapper where type is set on a newspaper,

overlapping with the type on the paper and representing

different aspects of how cod is soon going to disappear.

The problem for this brief was to not only make type

legible, but to find a medium that expresses the idea and

statistics given appropriately. The newspaper where the

statistics are placed was also designed, this was called

“The Daily Catch”, where topics on the death of cod are

also stated. The last statistic is pulled out of the wrapper,

representing the last cod being pulled out from the sea.

The main photograph shows the fish and chip wrapper,

made up of the closed newspaper. This project shows the

use of typography working within design, as well

as layout.

created by ART for The World Europa and NABA – under

the patronage of the Office of the High Commissioner

for Human Rights (OHCHR) and of the Italian Ministry

of University and Research, for the 60th anniversary of

the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The main

theme of the competition is “Dignity and Justice for

all of us” and the project’s goal is not only to stimulate

students’ creativity in order to create a poster, but

to form a collective identity, that can help spread

awareness of universal Human Rights. This poster won

the development category and was exhibited in Milan,

Geneva and New York. www.shakeyourrights.org/winners

Gotham Cafe is a well known restaurant off Grafton Street,

Dublin. A competition was held to design the website for

the restaurant. This website won the competition.

The idea behind the website is to recreate the ambiance

of the actual restaurant through its website.

Its navigation makes it easy for everybody from Internet

savvy to not Internet savvy to look at and follow through.

Elements of flash were embedded within this piece to

create the environment of the site. The colour scheme was

mainly based on the name of the cafe and what

it means, as well as the interior decor and original logo.

This is site is currently available on www.gothamcafe.ie

An advertisement campaign for Starbucks was designed to

promote the food sold in the café. Starbucks prides itself

of selling fair trade, natural foods and drinks so the colour

scheme represents this message. Creative typography was

designed to attract the eye of the client, using funny and

interesting quotes to advertise on the street and within the

café. The campaign uses phrases such as:

“Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are”

Flyers, posters, mugs and sugar sachets will all have the

advertisement implemented onto them.

ODelicate trimmings, strong colours and a feminine twist for the modern day woman is what the Spring 2011 collection by Dunnes Stores is all about. Our chic and playful collection is reminiscent of classic 1980’s sophistication and funkyness. Dunnes Stores collection reinvents eveningwear by adding ruffles, detailed trimmings and lace cutouts. The collection also nicely uses accessories such as detailed mesh tights, flower head pieces and bold statement jewelry to reinforce her collection as a bold choice this Spring. Team this look up with sexy red lips!

redTrends came and trends went in 2010, but brilliant, bold color may well be what we remember from the year in fashion—and no color more than red. “Red is inescapable”. Why not add hints of red to your workwear? Red lips or accessories teamed up with your favourite white outfit will make people turn heads to look at you! Dunnes Stores recomends one of our Savida red clutches to glam up your style this spring!

I LOVE TYPE( I REALLY DO)

20 | 35

Page 24: Tamara McCarthy Portfolio

“Typography needs to be available. Typography needs to be felt. Typography needs to be experienced. ” Helmut Schmid

In the digital times we live in, everything seems to be

made on the computer. ‘I Love Type’ is a collection of ex-

perimental hand rendered type, using different styles and

mediums. The pieces range from photography based type

to illustrated type. This collection of images is a

celebration for those who still believe in working by

hand and creating hand rendered pieces as well as my

own love for drawn type. This piece holds a world of

hand rendered type and explores different techniques,

styles and mediums and how different styles can send

different messages.

short and sweet is a children’s clothing brand for

children from 0-6 years old. The logo needed to be

versatile enough to allow different creatives to modify

and customise it, as well as being internationally

recognised, simple and friendly (the logo can be seen

below). The brand acts as a frame to portray creatives

work and give them global exposure and promotion.

Creatives will include: designers, artists, illustrators,

photographers etc. Different promotional materials

were also created for the brand such as a

brochure, bags, swing tags and labels. short and

sweet promotes an eco environment and their belief

is that minimal packaging is a must, however an eco

friendly package for shoes was also designed. The

main photographs show two t-shirt designs, with

they’re matching swing tags, price lags and

organic cotton labels.

Dunnes Stores held a Swimwear press launch where

members of the Irish press were invited to view our new

collection. Invitations for the launch were sent out and press

were welcomed with a press pack and goodie bag. Design

elements were designed to give a 50’s yet contemporary feel

to suit the photography created by Irish photographer, Barry

McCall. A swimwear mark was created to use on labels,

store point of sale. bags etc. Swimwear bags were created

for the press launch and were then introduced into stores

due to their success on the press night.
