Tallaght to benefit from €1m for new Youth Cafes

constituency. This is a wel-come announce-ment by Minister Fitz-gerald as the availability of these funds reinforces the Governments commitment to the extension of quality youth cafe through-out the country, in particular noting the repeated

emphasis that young people have placed on the need for safe, alcohol-free recreational facili-ties.

“Since taking office Minister Fitzgerald has already provided €700,000 in 2011 and 2012 for youth cafe developments and

I credit her for the good work she has done in this regard. This funding is a much needed boost to youth services in Dublin South-West; in Rathfarnham, Tallaght, Templeogue and across the constituency and the whole country.I am greatly encouraged by the quality of the projects that have already been grant aided under the previous Youth Cafe funding scheme.

“The Youth Cafe Funding Scheme is concerned with pro-moting the structured develop-ment of new youth cafes around the country by giving support to local organisations and groups which are providing youth services. The criteria for the Scheme places a clear focus on both long term sustainability and service plan-ning. The scheme will beadministered by Pobal on behalf of the Department.

“The funding scheme was initial-ly set up in 2010/2011 at a time when the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs launched the publication of two relevant associated publica-tions. The aim of Youth Cafes in Ireland: A best practice guide is to contribute to the formation of a solid policy foundation for the support and development of the youth cafe model of intervention with children and young people in Ireland. In addition, the Youth Cafe toolkit gives advice on how to set up and run a youth cafe in Ireland is designed to assist in the practicalities and day to day issues involved for anybody involved in the manage-ment of a youth cafe.

Ireland XO achieves All-Ireland Coverage

Reaching Out (Ireland XO), the National “Reverse Genealogy” Programme launched by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, on 14th March 2012, announaced that it now has a volunteer network across all 32 counties of Ireland. The volunteer programme recently signed up its 2,000th volunteer and is now present and active in over in 800 parishes north and south.

Ireland XO provides an invaluable service to the development of local communities by welcoming returning members of the local parish Diaspora to their area, showing them where their people came from, and introducing them where possible to living relatives. Volunteers trained in local history and heritage also identify those who left the area, tracing descendants of local emigrants, building up a “virtual” parish community worldwide.

Last year, An Taoiseach stated that “From its beginnings as a pilot project in South East Galway, Ireland Reaching Out has shown how ‘reverse genealogy’ can engage the diaspora to bring real social and economic benefits down to parish level”.

The annual children’s art competition prize giving, hosted by TCC, was opened with a burst of energy and colour in The Abberley Court Hotel on Tuesday night.

The Black Panther Kick Boxers opened the event with an impressive floor display of their moves and high kicks, which was followed by by a burst of colour and elegant ballroom moves by Xquisite Dance, both local Tallaght children’s groups.

After the huge energy opening, it fell to the TCC PRO, Tara, to introduce the presenters of the awards, Mayor Cathal King, current Tallaght Person of the Year, Norman Kelly and TCC chairman, Jim Lawlor.

The winners were from 6 schools and their artworks were unique and used a variety of mediums covering a variety of themes, from the Mona Lisa to rainbows.

TCC were also delighted to welcome 2 Heart of Gold winners, Niamh Gavin and Jack Mc Mahon to share in the celebrations. Councillor Looney, a teacher in St Dominics also came along to cheer on his school’s winner on the night.

TCC emphasized the role local business play in making this competition possible, The Abberley Court Hotel, Jimmy from the Abberley Kitchen, Tallaght Adventure World, Tallaght Leisureplex, Cadburys and Shamrock Rovers sponsors the venue, the refreshments and the winner’s prizes, including a chocolate hamper for Scoil Carmel. A huge thanks goes to these local businesses.

Norman Kelly encouraged children to participate in art in all it’s forms, saying his own brother and sister nurtured their artist talents and now have full time careers in the arts.” Art in all forms should be encouraged and children should be allowed to express themselves and nurture their creativity. It can even lead to full time careers such as acting, painting and architecture”.

The ceremony was brought to a close with the high energy ending, in a sea of bright colours as Nicole Kelly’s Xquisite Dance performers took to the floor to show us their hip hop moves - which left all the adults in the audience exhausted just watching the talents boys and girls.

Some of the world’s leading experts on disability and work will travel to Dublin for the European Union of Supported Employment (EUSE) conference, hosted by the Irish Association of Supported Employment (IASE) and sponsored by the Rehab Group.

IT Tallaght International Week 2013The Institute ofTechnology Tallaght will hold an International Week, within the Institute, from the 11th to the 15th of March 2013. The week’s aims are to internationalise the Institutes Business Degree courses, while also promoting the opportunity for students to study abroad through the Erasmus scheme. This year’s five day event has been organised by a group of budding Advertising and Marketing students of IT Tallaght. The Institute will see fifteen lecturers, from numerous international countries, such as The Netherlands, Poland and Spain, taking to the lecture halls to educate the

students on both international cultures and their Specific area of expertise. Irish guest speakers Peter Nash from Tourism Ireland and Kevin Donnelly from Britvic, will also take to the podium.

The Minister met members of the Tallaght local Drugs Task Force at a special meeting held at the headquarters of the Tallaght Rehabilitation Project in historic Kiltalown House.

JobsPlus will encourage recruitment of long-term unemployed – state will pay €1 for every €4 it costs an employer to recruit a new staff member from the Live Register Fine Gael Councillor Brian Lawlor has welcomed the publication of the Action Plan for Jobs 2013, which targets job creation in small businesses and start-ups, as well as the biggest multinational companies. “The Action Plan for Jobs (APJ) 2013 is an ambitious document containing 333 actions to be implemented across 16 Government Departments and 46 agencies aimed at stimulating job creation. The Plan contains actions to support business, reduce costs, improve access to finance and target key growth sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and ICT. It will help both large and small businesses in Tallaght and across the country to expand and create

jobs,” he/she explained. “The APJ is the Government’s blueprint for boosting the number of jobs by 100,000 by 2016. This year’s plan will build on the progress made in 2012, when 12,000 net new jobs were created in the private sector. 2012 was also a record year for job-creation by Irish and multinational exporting companies. It is clear that progress is being made, and jobs are being created in growing sectors of the economy. But unemployment rates remain far too high, and we are determined to push ahead with radical reforms that will make it easier for people to get back to work. “The APJ 2013 includes seven Disruptive Reform measures which will be implemented in conjunction with senior industry figures and are designed to have a significant impact on job creation. One of the key measures is the JobsPlus initiative, which will provide an incentive for

employers to hire those who have been unemployed for a long time. The State will pay €1 for every €4 it costs an employer to take on a new staff member from the Live Register,” “While there are already a range of measures in place to help employers take on people from the Live Register, there has been low take up on some schemes,” he/she pointed out. “ JobsPlus will provide a simple to encourage employers to give job opportunities to the long-term unemployed. This will come as a huge boost to the small business sector. Many small businesses could benefit significantly by taking on one or two extra staff members; JobsPlus will make that process a lot easier. And most importantly, it should lead to lots more employment opportunities for people who are out of work.”

Using large quantities of plastic packaging, the artist will make variously sized bodies of water. This interplay of the synthetic and the elemental leads to curious physical juxtapositions

and trajectories. What results is not so much a collection of whole objects as dynamic pluralities of matter, held precariously in place by the forces around them. An uncertain materiality presents itself -at once primordial and futuristic - in which the physical properties and durations of

There are a number of differences between operating a business as a sole trader or through a company which we will briefly discuss below. Firstly, a sole trader owns the business personally and is personally liable for all debts of the business. A private limited company is a separate legal person and the shareholders of the company are generally only liable for the debts of the company to the extent of the share capital contributed to the company. This is what is meant by “limited liability”. Directors of limited companies can claim unvouched expenses for mileage and sub-sistence tax free (in accordance with civil service rates). Sole traders can only claim vouched expenses eg diesel receipts but they can claim for the cost of their own car used in the business.Pension funding is also far more flexible through a company scheme. A spouse and other family members may also be employed by the company, paid a reason-able salary and also included in the pension scheme. The extraction of profits from a company is a complex area with many tax consequences but its important to mention that there can be significant long term

based tax incentives with the limited com-pany option for profitable businesses.There are however additional costs involved in setting up and administering a company on an annual basis. There are also incorporation costs and cessation costs for companies if the business does not go as planned.The corporation tax rate of 12.5% for companies is likely to be considerably lower than those for individuals for the foreseeable future. This will mean that there will be more cash available within a company to reinvest into the business than if the business had been carried on as a sole trade where marginal income tax rates could be in excess of 50%. It is important to note however that any retained profits are the companies profits and the owners cannot extract these profits for personal use without paying personal taxes. Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has said that the 70 per cent reduction in cancellations at Tallaght Hospital, shows that the reform of the health service is delivering real results. “The Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly TD, has made significant progress in fixing our broken health service since taking office just two years ago. One such example is the significant progress which has been made in reducing the number of day-case and inpatient cancellations at Tallaght Hospital. In 2010, the combined number of day-case and inpatient cancellations at Tallaght Hospital was 1025, which was made up of 44 day-cases and 981 inpatient cancellations. This is a reduction of 70 per cent in the number of treatments not being carried out on time and as scheduled. “This is significant progress made by Minister Reilly, having been left a health service which was in an appalling state by the previous Government. These figures clearly show that the Special Delivery Unit, which was established 20 months ago to tackle waiting times and the number of people on trolleys, is

delivering real results. “Minister Reilly has driven change in hospitals around the country by significantly improving the management of the health service. This change is now coming to fruition which has contributed towards improvements in waiting lists and the number of people on trolleys. “Other areas of the health service which have shown significant improvement can be seen in the reduction in the number of children waiting more than 20 weeks for day-case or inpatient surgery from 1,759 at the end of 2011 to 89; a reduction of 95 per cent in a single year. Adults waiting more than nine months for day-case or inpatient surgery at the end of 2011, has dropped from 3,076 to 86, a reduction of 98 per cent in a single year. “While the health service can’t be fixed overnight, we are moving in the right direction and I am confident that Minister Reilly’s plan to reform it, will deliver a world class health service that the people of this country need and deserve.”

Bustransport has hastened in recent years and this juncture represents a landmark movement in that process. The days of Tallaght people who were commuting into Dublin on unsuitable buses or being forced to wait until a low floor bus arrived is now thankfully at an end,” stated Cllr Lawlor.

‘This event along with other upgrades on the Dublin Bus service such wi-fi access, are very welcome and represent necessary upgrades to a service that caters for many millions of journeys each year,” concluded Cllr Lawlor.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Trade and Diaspora, Seán Crowe TD, has welcomed the Governments commitment to take a pro-active approach towards the undocumented Irish in America during the St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations, particularly as immigration reform is currently being debated in the American Congress.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, made the commitment after questions from Deputy Crowe in the Dáil this week.

Deputy Crowe said:“I welcome the government’s commitment to ensure the welfare of the undocumented Irish, and that the Irish diaspora in general are key elements of their foreign policy.

“A recently leaked White House draft immigration plan, which included an eight-year pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, prompted negative comments from American Republicans.

“I hope that the Democratic and Republican parties can come together

on this issue and draft a bi-partisan immigration reform bill, which would comprehensively reform the US immigration system and procedures, and create a pathway for undocumented immigrants resident in America to gain citizenship.

“This week the government committed to use the St. Patrick’s Day engagements to lobby American Congress members on this issue, and also on the issue of E3 visas.

“All parties in Leinster House share a concern and a willingness to work together to get progress on this issue which effects about 50,000 Irish citizens.

“The Tánaiste’s commitment to reach out to the opposition parties and members of the Oireachtas to utilise the contacts they have in the American Congress, and to make a cross-party lobby for immigration reform, makes sense and will ultimately benefit the campaign to gain a pathway to citizenship for the undocumented Irish.”

As part of the European Week against Racism, South Dublin County Council’s Social Inclusion Unit and Sports Officer along with the F.A.I. Football in the Community Development Officers, Rugby Officer and Cricket Officer will hold a Sports blitz in Clondalkin Sports & Leisure Centre on Thursday 14th March and Thursday 21st March utilising sport as a medium to highlight the anti-racism theme and to promote cultural integration and social inclusion through sport.

We are targeting 2nd Years in secondary schools in the county area and 6th class in primary schools with an emphasis on

fair play and equality.

One of the main objectives of the Council is to facilitate initiatives to promote integration in the county. This is one of the reasons why we have organised the sports blitz. The day is about having fun whilst being conscious of the need to promote cultural integration and social inclusion through sport. It is about participation together!

Discrimination, racism, the intolerance of others is borne out of ignorance. Be it in our workplace, our schools, our homes, our clubs a willingness to learn about others and to communicate with others is the key to a successful, fair and open society.

Spring has arrived, and with longer days and warmer weather comes a new crop of fresh produce. This is the perfect season to “spring clean” your diet, so out with the heavy fall and winter fare and in with springtime fruits and veggies.

In this issue I am going to share with you one of my favourite spring dessert, Strawberries Ramanoff, it is so easy to prepare treat ,perfect for any occasion. Orange-flavored liqueur complements fresh berries in this classic dessert.

Strawberries are usually available all year-round, but their peak season is from April until June. These sweet, juicy berries are nutritional jewels with just 1 cup offering 3.5 grams of fiber and meeting 100% of your daily vitamin C needs. For the best flavour, buy strawberries grown close to

home since they are likely to be fresher and suffer less damage in transit. Strawberries should be plump, firm, well-shaped, and uniformly coloured. A sweet addition to salads, dressings, or even a main meal, strawberries “take the cake” and save your waistline as a light dessert.

Ingredients:• 4 cups sliced strawberries (about 1

1/2 pounds) $• 3 tablespoons powdered sugar• 1/4 cup Cointreau or Grand

Marnier (orange-flavored liqueur)• 1/3 cup whipping cream, chilled• 3 tablespoons powdered sugar• 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract• Mint sprigs (optional)

Preparation:1. 1. Combine first 3 ingredients in a

bowl. Cover and chill 3 1/2 hours.2. 2. Place cream, 3 tablespoons

sugar, and vanilla in a small bowl; beat with a mixer at high speed until stiff peaks form. Spoon over strawberry mixture. Garnish with mint, if desired. Serve immediately.

Tallaght school girl in running for art competition

TEXACO ART JUDGING UNDERWAY

Judging of the entries submitted for this year’s 59th Texaco Children’s Art Competition is under way. Winners will be announced at a function to be held in Dublin in early-April. Going for judging is one of the entries

received from Dublin – a work entitled ‘Making a splash’ by Amanda Murray, a pupil at St. Joseph’s School, Tallaght. Admiring it is competition administrator Anne-Marie Barnes.

A fundraising event in aid of Kasey Kelly is being held on March 16th . Kasey is a two year old little girl who at just ten months was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour called Atypical Teratoid/ Rhaboid Tumour or ATRT. This type of tumour is very aggressive and extremely rare worldwide.

Kasey is getting treatment in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. This treatment as you can imagine costs several hundred thousand euro, so we would like to raise as much money as we can for Kasey!

Sugary drinks row in New York

Just a day before they were to take effect, limits on large sugary drinks in New York City have been invalidated by a judge, in a significant blow to one of the most ambitious and divisive initiatives of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s tenure.

The mayor’s plan, which is to combat obesity, aroused the ire of the US soft-drink industry, which undertook a multimillion-dollar legal and advertising campaign to block it.

Mr Bloomberg said he would immediately appeal, and at a quickly arranged news conference, he fiercely defended the rationale for the rules, which would have limited the size of sugary drinks to 16 oz (450 mm) at restaurants, theatres and food carts.

Five new “flood categories” are included in a new interactive mapping tool that homeowners or businesses or anyone wanting to lodge a development application in Brisbane can now use.

The new tool, which went online yesterday for the first time, lets users look at proposed zoning, overland water flow, the impact of flooding, proximity to heritage protection areas and land uses of any parcel of land in Brisbane.

Othello record bid

Durban theatre company, Think Theatre, has taken the first step in applying to the Guinness World Records for their production of Shakespeare’s Othello. Not only has the show reached a five-year milestone with its run this year, but as of today, with one show at 9am and another at noon, the company would have staged their 350th production of the Shakespearean classic.

Think Theatre has now applied to Guinness World Records to be acknowledged for staging the most performances of Othello by a repertoire company (a professional, touring company).

wITh The IrIsh FILm InsTITuTeThe library is pleased to host an exhibition of Irish Film posters. These are on loan from the IFI which this year celebrates 20 years in its current location in Temple Bar. So it is fitting that the college library hosts this as part of ITT Dublin’s 20 year celebrations.

This is the second time that we have had some of the posters on loan from the IFI, the first time being back in 2008. This was a very popular exhibition then and we hope this will be just as well-liked this time around.

To coincide with this exhibition we will have a lunch time talk from the head of the IFI Irish Film archive Kasandra O’Connell. This talk will outline the history of the archive of film held in the IFI from feature films, newsreels, amateur films and much more which has captured the changing landscape of the Irish Nation.

This rich resource has been shared with

the public in as many ways possible, nationally and internationally. This event will be of substantial benefit to our Creative Digital Media students but will be of value to anyone with an interest in Irish film or archives. With the new Zip access open this is an exhibition that may be taken in during ones lunch break.

The Heineken Cup made its eagerly anticipated debut at Cheeverstown on 19th February. Cheeverstown, a voluntary organisation, provides a wide range of residential, respite and day services to almost 400 children and adults with an intellectual disability and to their families. This level of commitment shown by the organisation and its staff was evident for all to see when the European Cup arrived at the Templeogue based centre. The sense of excitement was palpable before the Cup was revealed and a sea of Leinster flags and jerseys greeted the famous trophy to lend a carnival atmosphere to proceedings. The clicks of cameras whirred non-stop for the duration of the visit as a myriad of photos were taken with the users of Cheeverstown’s facilities and their families.

Over the past twenty five years Cheeverstown’s approach to supporting people with disabilities has changed significantly, evolving from a medical model to a social model. This change has been driven through by people who use Cheeverstown’s services and has been helped by subsequent changes in legislation. In this time there has been a move from a one size fits all approach characterised by day and residential services to a more personalised approach

to supports. The personalised care available was plain to see as staff interactions throughout the visit were framed in humour, friendship and a sense of respect that are concurrent with Cheeverstown’s desire to provide a service where those with intellectual disabilities are treated free of prejudice or patronisation.

While there was great enthusiasm across the board for the visit of the trophy, it was the members of the De La Salle Palmerstown Eagles

squad present that took the levels of excitement to a different stratosphere. The team, made up of players who use Cheeverstown services , has previous experience of playing at the R.D.S, where they took part in a hugely successful half time showcase when Leinster played Llanelli in the Heineken Cup last month. Even though the squad were old hands at this sort of thing, the presence of the Cup didn’t fail to illicit a response as each member of the team eagerly had their photo taken with the trophy.

Heineken Cup pays a visit to CheeverstownRugby men, one and all, the squad’s interest in the Cup was topped only by their interest in when training was taking place at the weekend! Head coach David Hicks spent the majority of the event fielding questions regarding that Sunday morning’s training and did so with a level of banter and friendship that made it abundantly clear that the relationship between Mr.Hicks and his players was one founded predominately on mutual respect.

Overall the visit was an unmitigated success even despite the absence of Leo the Lion due to a minor wardrobe malfunction. Cheeverstown C.E.O, Brian Gallagher was delighted with the outcome of the day. “It was extremely well received. Everybody was really happy with it. It’s not an everyday occurrence and in the current economic climate you’re always looking for morale boosters and it definitely checked that box.”

Cheeverstown’s mission is based around enabling people with an intellectual disability to have full and meaningful lives through quality person centred services in partnership with families and judging by the success of the trophy visit, the organisation is fulfilling its mandate to the fullest.

After the semi-final round, taking place in venues around Ireland this Friday and Saturday, the table will be set for the finals on March 23rd that begin at 11am with the Nivea Women’s SuperLeague Plate, a competition played between all the teams that fell short of playoffs.

Following that at 1 and 3pm respectively are the Basketball Ireland Women and Men’s Division One finals.

The grade directly below the Nivea SuperLeagues, the division one leagues feature some of the best talent in the country and may well have a pseudo-home-town-team in Templeogue Azzurri, who won’t have far to travel

to Tallaght and the National Basketball Arena should they beat Titans in Galway this weekend in one of the Men’s semi-final

The final two games of the day are the two most high-profile and mark the last action for Ireland’s SuperLeague basketballers. 5pm sees the Nivea Women’s SuperLeague final while the men take the court at 7pm for the final of a new competition, christened the National Champions Trophy.
