6:30-8:00 Lecture – The Baroque: an introduction through art, architecture and music (Taurins - Walter Hall) The baroque style was not only an art of passions, ecstasies, and allegory, but also a political means to convey an energetic image of power and wealth, inspiring awe and respect. Painting, sculpture, and architecture were melded together into an expressive and powerful art form. Join Ivars Taurins for an exploration of baroque art and architecture and its parallels in music. 8:15 Introductions and Orientation (Walter Hall) 9:15 Gathering at Duke of York Pub DAY 2: Tuesday, May 30, 2017 8:50-9:50 Performance Practice: The Basics #1 (Taurins) What do we as musicians do to distinguish the musical languages of Bach or Biber from those of Brahms, Bartok, Britten, or Binchois? With the aid of baroque treatises and scores, we explore the general and specific theoretical and stylistic issues – the “rules of thumb” – of 17th- and 18th-century music, providing an historically-informed basis for the interpretive decisions we make as 21st-century musicians. This series of early morning classes offers an excellent grounding in performance practice, and is recommended for all participants.

Nature further increases the challenge by giving us a system that precludes completely pure intonation. What does “in tune” mean in a baroque ensemble? What temperaments were used in fixed-pitch instruments such as keyboards during the baroque, and what influence do these temperaments have on the tuning of singers and players of other instruments?

12:30-1:30 Lecture: Historical acting techniques, and what early musicians can learn from them (Wentz) Musical treatises from the 17th and 18th centuries encourage the performer to move the passions of the audience just as an orator would ... but how do we know what declamation was like at the time? Should we just take Obama as our model and hope for the best? There is a better way: by examining original exercises for young actors and orators, we can try to reconstruct the passions in their 17th- and 18th-century manifestations The results can be challenging and inspiring, and may lead us to more moving, forceful and varied musical performances of early repertoire today.
