    TACS Dial-Up Network Option

    I. Introduction

    A. Overview

In some situations, it is preferable to use a modem to connect TACS to the TPS box or equivalent.

Starting with TACS 7.0, you can run TACS under Windows 95. This allows us to takeadvantage of the networking and dial-up systems built into Windows or created for

Windows by Microsoft. Once installed, these drivers are built directly into the

operating system, and use memory and resources Windows allocates for itself. Allcomponents of this option are either free or readily available from a software store.

    1. Hardware Components

    Dial-Up PC With Modem. . . . . . . . . .This Windows 95/98 PC with a modem runsthe dial-up server. This system has been tested

    with a 33.6 speed modem.

This dial-up PC must also have a connection tothe destination of the TACS data, be it TPS or another system. Typically, this connection willbe a network. This network location can beaccessed by the TPS or other system.

Modems For Each TACS PC. . . . . . . .Each TACS PC needs a modem that issupported by the Windows Dial-Up Network protocol. This has been tested with a 33.6modem.

    2. Software Components

Dial-up Networking Client 1.2 . . . . . .Most Windows 95 PCs have an older dial-upnetworking (DUN) driver than this one. You candownload this upgrade for free from the

Microsoft web site. This upgrade program iscalled msdun12.exe.

Windows 98 comes with the updated driver, sono update is necessary.

    Connection Manager. . . . . . . . . . . . . .This is a freeware utility. The dial-upnetworking (DUN) client provided by Microsoft can connect automatically to the dial-upnetwork, but it cannot automate disconnection.

This utility gives TACS that ability.

Microsoft Plus! 95 (on dial-up host) .A relatively little known component of the Microsoft Plus! kit for Windows 95 is a dial-upserver. You only need to install this on the dial-up host, not the individual TACS machines.

This component comes built into Windows 98, and is available as an installation option. Youdo NOT need the Windows 95 Plus! or

Windows 98 Plus! kit for this option - only your original Windows 98 CD-ROM.

II. Installing The TACS Dial-Up Host

    1. Getting Started

You should install the TACS Dial-Up Host first. Also, you need information youconfigure here later when you tell the TACS units what machine to call, and where onthat machine to put its information.

Before starting, make certain the TACS Dial-Up Host box has the followingcomponents:

s Windows 95 or 98 is installed. If you install 98, select Dial Up Server under

    Communications options during the installation.

s The modem is attached and working, and Windows 95 is configured to use it. Pleasetest this before continuing.

s There is a network connection from the dial-up host PC to the system where the TACS data will be copied. This other machine is either of the TPS system or a payrollconnected system.

    3. Install Dial-Up Server

Depending on your version of Windows, do one of the procedures below. Remember this is only for the dial-up server, not the TACS units.

    a. Windows 95 - Install Dial-Up Server From Microsoft Plus!

1- Insert the Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 disk or CD-ROM on the dial- up host PC and star t the installation.

2- Select Custom for the installation process.

3- Select Dial-Up Server from the components list. You don t need anything else off the Plus! disc.

    4. Network Share Installation

Here, you will create a share on the TACS dial-up host to the TPS Data Directory.

A share is a resource on one machine that other networked machines can access. In

this case, it s a directory. This is NOT the dial-up link. The share is a separate link from the dial-up host to the ultimate destination of the TACS information, probably across a conventional network. You must have write access to this directory from the

    TACS dial-up host.

1- Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

    2- Create a file folder called TPS\DATA.

In other words, create a folder called TPS at root, then create a DATA folder inside the TPS folder.

    3- Select the TPS\DATA folder.

4- On the File menu, click Properties.

5- Click the Sharing tab, and then click Shared As.

If the Sharing tab is not visible, you didn t enable file and print sharing services. SeeConfigure Your Network Connection on page 8.

6- Name the share TPSDATA or something similar.

The name you do use should not contain spaces.

The server is now waiting for calls on the modem.

You will notice a new icon in the tray by the clock in the bottom right corner of the Windows start bar. This indicates that dial-up networking is active. You can doubleclick this icon to change settings or close the application when needed.

8- Click OK to close this window. Then close the Dial-Up Networking box.

The system is now ready to take calls. Once you configure a TACS unit to send them, you will be able to test this system.

9- Write down the phone number of the TACS dial-up host.

NOTE: Someone must be logged into Windows on this machine for theconnection to work. If the machine is on but is waiting at a login prompt,

    you cannot dial into it.

A work group must be specified. Both the client and server must be inthe same work group in order to share resources.

    III. Installing The TACS Client

    A. Getting Started

Before starting, make certain every TACS unit has the following components:s Windows 95 or Windows 98 is installed.

s The modem is attached and working, and Windows 95/98 is configured to use it. Please test this before continuing.

s Keep the original Windows 95/98 installation disks or CD-ROM on hand. You may need this later when you configure the dial-up network option.

s Have your disk with the disconnection supervisor (provided by DDI) on hand.

s Have the phone number for the TACS dial-up host PC.

s If you are using Windows 95, have the latest Microsoft Dial-Up Network 1.2 driver downloaded from the Internet. This last element is explained in the next section.

Windows 98 has the latest driver built in, so you can skip this with Windows 98.

x This computer name must be unique among the PCs that can connect to the dial-up host. This includes all of the TACS units and other PCs on the network containing this dial-up host. For example, you CANNOT simply name every

TACS unit TACS , even if they connect separately to the dial-up host.

If you have to change this workgroup or name, you must reboot the PC for the changeto take effect.

You will need this later in setting up your dial-up network connection.

6- Close the Control Panel applications and return to the desktop.

    2. (Windows 95 Only) Install (DUN) Client Version 1.2

If your copy of Windows 95 was purchased before November of 1997, you will need an updated version of the DUN program. You can do this installation on Windowssystems with or without the dial-up networking option installed already.

1- Download the Microsoft Dial-Up Networking Client version 1.2.

You can download this from the Microsoft site below. Enter the full address on oneline in your browser.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/Updates/W95DialUpNetw/default.asp

This page explains what this update is, and gives you a link to the download. If you

do not see it listed, run a search on msdun12.exe on the Microsoft site or another download site.

2- Install this using the directions supplied by Microsoft.

This installation is fairly automatic. Your system will restart twice during this installprocess. You will also need your Windows 95 floppies or CD-ROM at certain pointsin the installation.

    3. Install TACS for Windows 95

See the TACS for Windows 95 manual.

    4. Install The Connection Manager

This allows the TACS unit to disconnect properly. Microsoft s DUN can dial inautomatically, but it cannot disconnect without human assistance. The connectionmanager gives TACS the ability to disconnect automatically. DDI supplies this third-party freeware program to you on a floppy disk. Installation is extremely simple; just copy it to the TACS batch directory.

1- Copy the Connection Manager program from the floppy to theC:\TACS\Batch directory.

The connection manager file name is ConnectionManager.exe.

    Issue Procedure

Does a DUN connection get established?

If not, see the next section ( Unable to find protocol. on page 28 ) .

Does the dial-up host PCappear in the Network

    Neighborhood on the TACSmachine?

If it does, does the share appear? If the shareappears, then TACSINIT is configured incorrectly. Change the computer name and share name in TACSINIT to match what it actually is in the Network Neighborhood view.

If the share you want doesn t appear, but other shares on the dial-up PC do appear, theshare isn t set up correctly.

If no shares appear at all, try Start - Run... thenenter the computer name. A dialog box should appear with the shares listed.

If that doesn t work, launch a DOS prompt. Enter dir \\computer\share , where computer is the computer namehosting the share, and share is the sharename.

Try installing the Direct Connect module.

Make certain you don t havetwo computers in the same

    workgroup with the samename.

Make certain the workgroups for the client and server are the same and the computer names areunique. See Check The Client Network Configuration on page 16. Repeat this for thedial-up host and every TACS unit.

    A. Unable to find protocol.Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set ofnetwork protocols you specified in the Server Typesettings. Check your network configuration in the ControlPanel then try the connection again.

Dial-Up Networking can bind (link to and use) up to three protocols. The NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, and TCP/IP protocols are used by default for a Dial-Up Networkingconnectoid (think, configured icon). However, the fact that these protocols are used by a Dial-Up Networking connectoid does not necessarily mean that these protocols areavailable. Each protocol must be installed from Control Panel and then bound to the

    Dial-Up Networking adapter.

    Dial-Up Network Troubleshooting

    Problem Solution

The network protocols used by the server do not match the protocolsused by the client.

Modify the protocols used by the client so that at least one of them matches the dial-up host. See Select TheCommunications Server on page 21.

The protocol used by the client isunavailable.

Install the protocol from Control Panel (Check TheClient Network Configuration on page 16 ), then select it for the Dial-Up Networking (Select TheCommunications Server on page 21 ).

The line protocolsmay not match. Make sure you have the correct server type selected in theconnection's properties (PPP, SLIP, or RAS).See Select The Communications Server on page 21.

Your computer name is duplicated on the network.

Make sure there are no duplicate computer names on thenetwork. This can include the network where the host isconnected.

    The connectoid is damaged.

Delete the damaged connectoid (dial-up connection icon)and then re-create it. See Configure The Dial-UpConnection on page 18.

    Your port settingsare incorrect.

Verify your port settings are correct.1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control

Panel.2. Double-click Modems.3. Click the modem you are using for this connection,

click Properties, and then click the Connection tab.4. Verify that the settings under Connection Preferences

are correct, click OK, and then click Close.

    Your modem isphysically damaged.

Verify that your modem is not damaged by testing a known good modem in your computer.

    If nothing else works

If a network adapter is installed, try removing the bindingfor TCP/IP from the network adapter. If this works, and

you have other protocols installed, you can leave TCP/IP unbound from the network adapter. If this is the only protocol you have installed, you must bind the TCP/IP protocol to the network adapter before you can use thenetwork.
