The new building will also feature special purpose and administration ar- eas, an assembly hall, locker rooms and shower areas, and support functions associated with the facility. Absher Construction Company and Tetra Tech are expected to complete the project by July 2016. The Pierce County Readiness Center aims to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmen- tal Design (LEED) Silver environmental rating standards. The new facility replaces the former Tacoma Armory, a 106-year-old landmark building locat- ed at 715 S. 11th St., which was sold to downtown Tacoma developer Fred Roberson for $950,000 two years ago. "The 96th Troop Command had to move out of our historic Tacoma Armory due to safety con- cerns," said Major General Bret D. Daugherty, the Adjutant General in charge of the Washing- ton National Guard. "We were forced out of that old building because it was falling apart." Daugherty noted the 96th Command was making the best out of a difficult situation in the old Air Guard facility at Boeing Field. "The truth is they deserve a better home and I'm excited to break ground today to give them a better home," he added. "For the next 50 years or so — maybe 100 years, who knows? — soldiers will train here [and] respond to domestic emergencies from here. They'll deploy overseas and protect our country from here." Daugherty paid special tribute to the 96th Troop Command leadership, including Colonel Greg Allen and Command Sergeant Major Abby West, who were both at the event. "Places like this will really help us in terms of retention," said Allen. "When a brand new soldier sees a brand new facility, it will inspire that soldier to think that the Guard really cares about their people." U.S. Representative Denny Heck (D-Wash.), who represents the 10th Congressional District stretching from Olympia to Puyallup, said that he had more than 2,500 soldiers and airmen in his district. "Really, it's in recognition of their needs, their sacrifice, and their service that we are able to get to this day and we should never, ever lose sight of that," said Heck. "The fact of the matter is they answer the call. They answer the call ev- ery time whether it's to be deployed overseas or to be deployed within this state to respond to an emergency like Oso or like wildfires." GuardThe Washington National Guard held a

ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday to mark the beginning of construction of the Pierce County Readiness Center at the Camp Murray military base in Tacoma.

According to Washington National Guard of -cials, the 81,000-square-foot, $28 million facility will offer Washington National Guard members from multiple units the opportunity to perform their full-time and traditional duties, including critical training to help prepare for state and national disasters. The new building will also feature special purpose and administration ar-eas, an assembly hall, locker rooms and shower areas, and support functions associated with the facility.

Absher Construction Company and Tetra Tech are expected to complete the project by July 2016. The Pierce County Readiness Center aims to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmen-tal Design (LEED) Silver environmental rating standards.

The new facility replaces the former Tacoma Armory, a 106-year-old landmark building locat-ed at 715 S. 11th St., which was sold to downtown

Tacoma developer Fred Roberson for $950,000 two years ago.

"The 96th Troop Command had to move out of our historic Tacoma Armory due to safety con-cerns," said Major General Bret D. Daugherty, the Adjutant General in charge of the Washing-ton National Guard. "We were forced out of that old building because it was falling apart."

Daugherty noted the 96th Command was making the best out of a dif cult situation in the old Air Guard facility at Boeing Field. "The truth is they deserve a better home and I'm excited to break ground today to give them a better home," he added. "For the next 50 years or so — maybe 100 years, who knows? — soldiers will train here [and] respond to domestic emergencies from

here. They'll deploy overseas and protect our country from here."

Daugherty paid special tribute to the 96th Troop Command leadership, including Colonel Greg Allen and Command Sergeant Major Abby West, who were both at the event.

"Places like this will really help us in terms of retention," said Allen. "When a brand new soldier sees a brand new facility, it will inspire that soldier to think that the Guard really cares about their people."

U.S. Representative Denny Heck (D-Wash.), who represents the 10th Congressional District stretching from Olympia to Puyallup, said that he had more than 2,500 soldiers and airmen in his district.

"Really, it's in recognition of their needs, their sacri ce, and their service that we are able to get to this day and we should never, ever lose sight of that," said Heck. "The fact of the matter is they answer the call. They answer the call ev-ery time whether it's to be deployed overseas or to be deployed within this state to respond to an emergency like Oso or like wild res."
