Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland this week will join three other U.S. mayors on a panel to discuss eco-nomic justice.

The event, which will be held in Birmingham, Ala., is part of a larger commu-nity event sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors to commemorate Birmingham's role in the civil rights movement of 1963 and the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, which killed four young girls.

Working with the United Nations Educational, Scienti c and Cultural Organization and the U.S. Department of State, the Conference of Mayors is establishing the U.S. Coalition of Cities Against Racism and Discrimination as part of the Interna-tional Coalition of Cities Against Racism. UNESCO has asked the Conference of Mayors to organize the U.S. Coalition and serve as its secretariat. There are 1,295 such cities in the country today, and each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected of cial, the mayor.

The panel discussion will be held on Thurs., Sept. 12 at 7 a.m. Paci c Standard Time (9 a.m. Central Standard Time). Mayors Michael Nutter of Phila-delphia, Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans and Paul Soglin of Madison, Wis. will join Mayor Strickland on this panel. The event will air live on C-SPAN.
