This survey was obtained solely for design purposes and is not a part of the Contract Docum ents. The use

and interpretation of this inform ation for any other purpose shall be entirely the responsibility of the using party.

The Owner is not responsible for variations in the site conditions. B idders shall m ake observations at the site

in person to determ ine the nature and location of existing features to be encountered.

SUBSURFACE INVESTIG ATIO N

A sub-surface investigation has been perform ed at the Project site and the report of the find ings o f this

investigation is on file in the Architect's office.

This sub-surface report was obtained solely for design purposes and is not a part of the Contract Docum ents.

The use and interpretation of th is inform ation for any other purpose shall be entire ly the responsibility of the

using party.

APPLICATION OF GENERAL CONDITIONS

The standard printed A.I.A . Docum ents A-201, 2007 edition, issued by the Am erican Institute of Architects and

entitled "The G eneral Conditions of the Contract for C onstruction" and any other Supplem ental General

Conditions form a part of th is contract by reference and shall apply to the w ork as a whole and to each and

every branch or subdivision of the work w ith the sam e force as if w ritten in fu ll at the beginning of each of the

several sections.

Specific and im plied m odifications hereinafter are supplem ental and additional to the A.I.A . General Conditions

SECTION 01 11 00 - SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

PRO JECT DESCRIPTIO N

The project consists of tow new new one story classroom additions, site im provem ents, and other work as

indicated on the Docum ents to be constructed at Byrns L. Darden School in C larksville, M ontgom ery County,

Tennessee. Structural system s consist of re inforced concrete foundations and floor slabs on grade, structural

steel fram ing and roof decking. W alls are concrete un it m asonry, building insulation and face brick.

Therm oplastic m em brane roofing over rig id insulation w ith m etal coping, downspouts and accessories. Fram es

are hollow m etal, doors are solid core wood, hollow m etal and alum inum storefront and entrance assem blies

w ith finish hardw are. Interiors include m etal stud fram ing, gypsum wallboard, acoustical ceiling system s, vinyl

flooring, ceram ic tile, painting and cabinetry. Specialties include toilet partitions, signage and accessories.

M echanical and electrical system s include plum bing, sprinkler system , HVAC, fire a larm and com m unications,

power and lighting system s.

Specifically excluded from the Project are item s identified as "Not In Contract" or "N .I.C .".

CO NTRACTOR USE O F PREM ISES

G eneral:

L im it use of the prem ises to construction activities in areas where construction is indicated.

Confine operations to areas w ithin the im m ediate areas of construction. Portions of the site beyond

areas in which construction operations are indicated are not to be disturbed.

Schedule deliveries to m inim ize space and tim e requirem ents for storage of m ateria ls and equipm ent

on site.

No work is to be perform ed on adjoining properties.

M ANDATORY SEQUENCING OF W ORK

G eneral:

Erosion control m easures shall be in p lace prior to com m encing dem olition and earthw ork operations.

Construction entrance shall be in p lace prior to com m encing dem oltion and earthw ork operations.

and efficient m anner. Do not overload facilities, or perm it them to interfere w ith progress. D o no t allow

hazardous dangerous or unsanitary conditions, or public nuisances to develop or persist on the site.

TEM PO RARY CO NSTRUCTION AND SUPPO RT FACILITIES INSTALLATION

M aintain tem porary construction and support facilities until near Substantial Com pletion. Rem ove prior to

Substantia l Com pletion. Personnel rem aining after Substantia l C om pletion w ill be perm itted to use perm anent

facilities, under condition acceptable to the Owner.

Dewatering Facilities and Drains: M aintain the site, excavations and construction free of water.

Tem porary Enclosures: Provide tem porary enclosure for protection of construction in progress and com pleted,

from exposure, fou l weather, other construction operations and sim ilar activities.

Project Identification and Tem porary S igns: Prepare project identification sign of the size indicated. Support

on posts or fram ing of preservative treated wood. Do not perm it installation of unauthorized signs. Refer to

specim en sign draw ing follow ing this section.

SECURITY AND PRO TECTION FACILITIES INSTALLATION

Barricades, W arning Signs and L ights: Com ply w ith standards and code requirem ents for erection of

structurally adequate barricades. Paint w ith appropriate colors, graphics and warning signs to inform personnel

and the public of the hazard being protected against. W here appropriate and needed provide lighting, including

flashing red or am ber lights.

O PERATIO N, TERM INATIO N AND REM O VAL

Supervision: Enforce strict discipline in use of tem porary facilities. Lim it availability of tem porary facilities to

essentia l and intended uses to m inim ize waste and abuse.

M aintenance: M aintain facilities in good operating condition until rem oval. P rotect from dam age by freezing

tem peratures and sim ilar elem ents.

Protection: Prevent water filled piping from freezing. M aintain m arkers for underground lines. Protect

from dam age during excavation operations.

Term ination and Rem oval: Unless the Architect requests that it be m aintained longer, rem ove each tem porary

facility when the need has ended, or no later than Substantial Com pletion.

SECTION 02 41 16 - BUILDING DEMOLITION

PART 1 - GENERAL

SUM M ARY

This Section includes, but is not lim ited to, the fo llow ing:

Dem olition of existing structures and im provem ents above and below grade

Extent of dem olition work is ind icated on draw ings.

JOB CONDITIONS

Condition of Structures: Owner assum es no responsibility for actua l condition of item s or structures to be

dem olished.

Conditions existing at tim e of inspection for b idding purpose w ill be m aintained by Owner in so far as

practicable. How ever, variations w ithin structures m ay occur prior to start of dem olition work.

Protections: Provide tem porary barricades and other form s of protection as required to protect general public

from injury due to dem olition work.

Dam ages: Prom ptly repair dam ages caused to adjacent facilities by dem olition work at no cost to Owner.

Traffic: Conduct selective dem olition operations and debris rem oval in a m anner to ensure m inim um

interference w ith roads, streets, shoulders, and other adjacent occupied or used facilities.

SECTION 31 00 00 - EARTHWORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

DESCRIPTION OF W ORK

Extent of earthwork is indicated on Drawings.

Preparation of subgrade for building foundations, slabs, walks, pavements, as well as riprap & retaining walls

are included as part of this work.

Definition: "Excavation" is Unclassified, and includes excavation as required for proper bearing conditions

regardless of character of materials and obstructions encountered. Rock encountered shall be removed at

Contractor's expense.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Codes and Standards: Perform excavation work in compliance with applicable requirements of governing

authorities having jurisdiction.

Testing and Inspection Service: The Contractor shall retain a firm acceptable to the Owner, Architect &

Engineer. The testing laboratory shall perform soil testing and inspection service for quality control testing

during earthwork operations. Submit name of Testing Laboratory to Architect/Engineer for approval prior to

using on job.

SUBMITTALS

Test Reports: Submit the following reports directly to Architect/Engineer from the testing laboratory, with copy

to Contractor:

Test reports on borrow material.

Field density test reports.

One optimum moisture-maximum density curve for each type of soil encountered.

Report of actual unconfined compressive strength and/or results of bearing tests of each strata

tested.

Report of observation of compaction procedure for soil fill and sub-base material

JOB CONDITIONS

Site Information: Data on subsurface conditions is available at the offices of the Architect/Engineer. A soil

investigation report has been prepared by Earth Science Engineering, LLC, Clarksville, Tennessee. It is

expressly understood that the Owner will not be responsible for conclusions and interpretations drawn there

from by the Contractor and that information is made available only for the convenience of the Contractor.

Should the Contractor so desire, additional test borings and other exploratory operations may be made by

Contractor at no expense to Owner.

Existing Utilities: Locate existing underground utilities in areas of work. If utilities are to remain in place,

provide adequate means of support and protection during earthwork operations.

Should uncharted, or incorrectly charted, piping or other utilities be encountered during excavation, consult

Utility or Owner immediately for directions. Cooperate with Owner and utility companies in keeping respective

services and facilities in operation. Repair damaged utilities to satisfaction of Utility and Owner.

Do not interrupt existing utilities serving facilities occupied and used by Owner or others, during occupied

hours, except with prior written notice by Architect and then only after acceptable temporary utility services

have been provided.

Provide minimum of 48-hour notice to Architect and receive written notice to proceed before interrupting any

utility.

Protection of Persons and Property: Barricade open excavations occurring as part of this work and post with

warning lights.

Operate warning lights as recommended by authorities having jurisdiction.

Protect structures, utilities, sidewalks, pavements, and other facilities from damage caused by settlement,

lateral movement, undermining, washout and other hazards created by earthwork operations.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

SOIL AND ROCK MATERIALS

Definitions:

Satisfactory soil materials are those complying with Earth Science Engineering’s subsurface investigation

obtained by the Owner and approved by the Geotechnical Engineer retained by the Contractor.

Subbase Material: Naturally or artificially graded mixture of natural or crushed gravel, crushed stone, crushed

slag, and natural or crushed sand.

Drainage Fill: W ashed, evenly graded mixture of crushed stone conforming to ASTM D448, size No. 57.

Soil Backfill and Fill Materials: Approved soil having a plasticity index (PI) of 28 or less and more than 15. Soil

classified as ML or CL are not acceptable. Soil shall be free or organic matter.

RIP RAP

Machined Riprap shall vary in size from 2 inches to 1’-3” with no more than 20 percent by weight being less

than 4 inches. The thickness of the stone layer shall be 1’-6” with a tolerance of 3 inches.

Geotextile for Use as Riprap Bedding Material: Geotextile shall meet the requirements of AASHTO M 288

for Separation Geotextile Properties Table 3 for Apparent Opening Size and Ultraviolet Stability and

Geotextile Strength Property Requirements, Table 1, Class 2 for grab strength and puncture strength.

PRECAST CONCRETE HEADW ALLS

Concrete: Provide concrete for precast machine-made units meeting requirements of ASTM C 76 regarding

reinforced concrete, cement, aggregate, mixture and concrete test. Minimum 28-day compressive strength

shall be 4000 psi.

Reinforcing Steel: Place reinforcing steel to conform to details shown on Drawings. Provide positive means for

holding steel cages in place throughout production of concrete units.

RETAINING W ALL

Pre-Cast Retaining W all: Provide units based on standard products manufactured by Redi-Rock International

L.L.C or Equal. Provide specials units, corner & end units etc. As required for complete installation as shown

on the Drawings.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

EXCAVATION

Excavation is Unclassified, and includes excavation to subgrade elevations indicated, or excavation as

required for proper bearing conditions regardless of character of materials and obstructions encountered.

Rock encountered shall be removed at Contractor's expense to 8 inches minimum below bottom of spread

footings. Contractor shall backfill with an 8 inches minimum thickness sand cushion between top of rock and

bottom of footings.

Unauthorized excavation consists of removal of materials beyond indicated subgrade elevations or dimensions

without specific direction of Architect. Unauthorized excavation, as well as remedial work directed by Architect

shall be at Contractor's expense.

Elsewhere, backfill and compact unauthorized excavations as specified for authorized excavations of same

classification, unless otherwise directed by Architect.

Proofroll the building, parking and roadway areas with loaded tandem axle dump truck under the observation

of the Geotechnical Engineer retained by the Contractor after stripping topsoil and excavating to the proposed

subgrade level.

If unsuitable bearing materials are encountered at required subgrade elevations, carry excavations deeper and

replace excavated material as directed by the Geotechnical Engineer retained by the Contractor. Removal of

authorized unsuitable material and its replacement will be paid on basis of contract conditions relative to

changes in work.

Stability of Excavations: Slope sides of excavations to comply with local codes and ordinances having

jurisdiction. Shore and brace where sloping is not possible because of space restrictions or stability of material

excavated.

Maintain sides and slopes of excavations in safe condition until completion of backfilling.

Shoring and Bracing: Provide materials for shoring and bracing, if necessary to prevent cave-ins, such as

sheet piling, uprights, stringers and cross-braces, in good serviceable condition.

Establish requirements for trench shoring and bracing to comply with local codes and authorities having

jurisdiction.

Maintain shoring and bracing in excavations regardless of time period excavations will be open.

Dewatering: Prevent surface water and subsurface or ground water from flowing into excavations and from

flooding project site and surrounding area.

Do not allow water to accumulate in excavations. Remove water to prevent softening of foundation bottoms,

undercutting footings, and soil changes detrimental to stability of subgrades and foundations. Provide and

maintain pumps, well points, sumps, suction and discharge lines, and other dewatering system components

necessary to convey water away from excavations.

Establish and maintain temporary drainage ditches and other diversions outside excavation limits to convey

rain water and water removed from excavations to public storm sewer. Do not use trench excavations as

temporary drainage ditches.

Material Storage: Stockpile satisfactory excavated materials where directed, until required for backfill or fill.

Place, grade and shape stockpiles for proper drainage.

Locate and retain soil materials away from edge of excavations.

Dispose of excess soil material and waste materials as herein specified.

Excavation for Structures: Conform to elevations and dimensions shown within a tolerance of plus or minus

0.10', and extending a sufficient distance from footings and foundations to permit placing and removal of

concrete formwork, installation of services, other construction, and for inspection.

Excavation for Pavements: Cut surface under pavements to comply with cross-sections, elevations and grades

as shown.

Excavation for Trenches: Dig trenches to the uniform width required for particular item to be installed,

sufficiently wide to provide ample working room. Provide 6" to 9" clearance on both sides of pipe or conduit.

Excavate trenches to depth indicated or required. Carry depth of trenches for piping to establish indicated flow

lines and invert elevations. Beyond building perimeter, keep bottoms of trenches sufficiently below finish grade

to avoid freeze-ups. W here rock is encountered, carry excavation 6" below required elevation and backfill with

a 6" layer of sand, crushed stone, or gravel prior to installation of pipe.

For pipes or conduit 6" or larger in nominal size, tanks and other mechanical/electrical work indicated, or, if not

otherwise indicated, excavate to 6" below bottom of work to be supported.

Except as otherwise indicated, excavate for exterior water-bearing piping (water, steam, condensate, drainage)

so top of piping is not less than 2'-0" below finished grade.

Grade bottoms of trenches as indicated, notching under pipe bells to provide solid bearing for entire body of

pipe.

Do not backfill trenches until tests and inspections have been made and backfilling authorized by Architect.

Use care in backfilling to avoid damage or displacement of pipe systems. For piping or conduit less than 2'-6"

below surface of roadways, provide 4" thick concrete base slab support. After installation and testing of

piping or conduit, provide minimum 4" thick encasement (sides and top) of concrete prior to backfilling or

placement of roadway subbase.

Cold W eather Protection: Protect excavation bottoms against freezing when atmospheric temperature is less

than 35 degrees F. (1 degree C).

COMPACTION

General: Control soil compaction during construction providing minimum percentage of density specified for

each area classification indicated below.

Percentage of Maximum Density Requirements: Compact soil to not less than the following percentages of

maximum density, unless noted otherwise by Geotechnical Engineer retained by the Contractor.

Buildings: Compact each layer of soil backfill or soil fill material at 95% Standard Proctor (ASTM

D698). Maintain moisture content within 2% of optimum.

Roadways, Parking Lots, and Sidewalks: Compact top 12" of subgrade and each layer of soil backfill

or soil fill material at 95% Standard Proctor (ASTM D698). Maintain moisture content within 2% of

optimum.

Landscaping Areas: Compact each layer of backfill or fill material at 90% Standard Proctor (ASTM

D698). Maintain moisture content within 3% of optimum.

Moisture Control: W here subgrade or layer of soil material must be moisture conditioned before compaction,

uniformly apply water to surface of subgrade, or layer of soil material, to prevent free water appearing on

surface during or subsequent to compaction operations.

Remove and replace, or scarify and air dry, soil material that is too wet to permit compaction to specified

density.

Soil material that has been removed because it is too wet to permit compaction may be stockpiled or spread

and allowed to dry. Assist drying by discing, harrowing or pulverizing until moisture content is reduced to a

satisfactory value.

BACKFILL AND FILL

General: Place acceptable soil material in layers to required subgrade elevations, for each area classification

listed below.

In excavations, use satisfactory excavated or borrow soil material.

Under grassed areas, use satisfactory excavated or borrow soil material.

Under walks and pavements, use subbase material.

Under building foundations, use satisfactory soil materials.

Under piping and conduit, use subbase material where subbase is indicated under piping or conduit;

shape to fit bottom 90 of cylinder.o

Backfill excavations as promptly as work permits, but not until completion of the following:

Acceptance of construction below finish grade including, where applicable, dampproofing,

waterproofing, and perimeter insulation.

Inspection, testing, approval, and recording locations of underground utilities. Removal of concrete

formwork.

Removal of shoring and bracing, and backfilling of voids with satisfactory materials. Cut off temporary

sheet piling driven below bottom of structures and remove in manner to prevent settlement of the

structure or utilities, or leave in place if required.

Removal of trash and debris.

W hen existing ground surface has a density less than that specified under "Compaction" for particular area

classification, break up ground surface, pulverize, moisture-condition to optimum moisture content, and

compact to required depth and percentage of maximum density.

Placement and Compaction - Soil: Place backfill and fill materials in layers not more than 9" in loose depth for

material compacted by heavy compaction equipment, and not more than 4" in loose depth for material

compacted by hand-operated tampers.

Before compaction, moisten or aerate each layer as necessary to provide optimum moisture content.

Compact each layer to required percentage of maximum dry density or relative dry density for each area

classification. Do not place backfill or fill material on surfaces that are muddy, frozen, or contain frost or ice.

Place backfill and fill materials evenly adjacent to structures, piping or conduit to required elevations. Take care

to prevent wedging action of backfill against structures or displacement of piping or conduit by carrying

material uniformly around structure, piping or conduit to approximately same elevation in each lift.

GRADING

General: Uniformly grade areas within limits of grading under this section, including adjacent transition areas.

Smooth finished surface within specified tolerances, compact with uniform levels or slopes between points

where elevations are indicated, or between such points and existing grades.

Grading Outside Building Lines: Grade areas within 10' of future building to slope and drain away from building

at 5%.

Finish surfaces free from irregular surface changes, and as follows:

Lawn or Unpaved Areas: Finish areas to receive topsoil to within not more than 0.10' above or below

required subgrade elevations.

W alks: Shape surface of areas under future walks to line, grade and cross-section, with finish surface

not more than 0.10' above or below required subgrade elevation.

Pavements: Shape surface of areas under pavement to line, grade and cross-section, with finish

surface not more than 1/2" above or below required subgrade elevation.

Grading Surface of Fill Under Building Slabs: Grade smooth and even, free of voids, compacted as specified,

and to required elevation. Provide final grades within a tolerance of 1/2" when tested with a 10' straightedge.

Compaction: After grading, compact subgrade surfaces to the depth and indicated percentage of maximum or

relative density for each area classification.

PAVEMENT SUBBASE COURSE

General: Subbase course consists of placing subbase material, in layers of specified thickness, over subgrade

surface to support a pavement base course.

Grade Control: During construction, maintain lines and grades including crown and cross-slope of subbase

course.

Placing: Place subbase course material on prepared subgrade in layers of uniform thickness, conforming to

indicated cross- section and thickness. Maintain optimum moisture content for compacting subbase material

during placement operations.

W hen a compacted subbase course is shown to be 6" thick or less, place material in a single layer. W hen

shown to be more than 6" thick, place material in equal layers, except no single layer more than 6" or less

than 3" in thickness when compacted.

RIP RAP

Riprap shall be placed to its full course thickness in one operation and in a manner to avoid displacing

underlying material. Riprap stone shall not be dropped onto fabric from a height greater than 1 foot.

Smaller-sized material shall not be dropped onto fabric from a height greater than 3 feet. Larger stones

shall be reasonably well distributed. Finished riprap shall be free from objectionable pockets of small

stones and clusters of larger stones. Hand placing may be required to the extent necessary to secure the

results specified and form uniform slopes.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

Quality Control Testing During Construction: Allow testing service to inspect and approve subgrades and fill

layers before further construction work is performed.

Perform field density tests in accordance with ASTM D 2922 (nuclear density) and ASTM D 3017 (nuclear

moisture), as applicable.

Footing Subgrade: For each strata of fill on which footings will be placed, conduct at least one test to verify

required design bearing capacities. Subsequent verification and approval of each footing subgrade may be

based on a visual comparison of each subgrade with related tested strata, when acceptable to Architect.

Paved Areas and Building Slab Subgrade: Make at least one field density test of subgrade for every 2500 sq.

ft. of paved area or building slab, but in no case less than 3 tests. In each compacted fill layer, make one field

density test for every 2500 sq. ft. of overlaying building slab or paved area, but in no case less than 3 tests.

Foundation W all Backfill: Take at least 2 field density tests, at locations and elevations as directed.

A Geotechnical Engineer retained by the Contractor and approved by the Architect will be required to

observe all cut and fill operations to insure that the plans and specifications are carried out during

construction.

MAINTENANCE

Protection of Graded Areas: Protect newly graded areas from traffic and erosion. Keep free of trash and

debris.

Repair and re-establish grades in settled, eroded, and rutted areas to specified tolerances.

Reconditioning Compacted Areas: W here completed compacted areas are disturbed by subsequent

construction operations or adverse weather, scarify surface, re-shape, and compact to required density prior to

further construction.

Settling: W here settling is measurable or observable at excavated areas during general project warranty

period, remove surface (pavement, lawn or other finish), add backfill material, compact, and replace surface

treatment. Restore appearance, quality, and condition of surface or finish to match adjacent work, and

eliminate evidence of restoration to greatest extent possible.

DISPOSAL OF EXCESS AND W ASTE MATERIALS

Transport trash and debris off site and dispose of in a legal manner.

Excess material, waste material including unacceptable excavated material may be wasted on site.
