Lecture

Yasmina Reza and John TurturroPresent A Spanish PlayWednesday, January 31 at 1pm

Tony Award®-winning French playwright Yasmina Reza shares behind-the-scenes details of the upcoming production of her most recent work A Spanish Play, in which the line between real life and the theater begins to blur.

Reza discusses her play, which begins performances in January at Classic Stage Company, along with the play’s director, Emmy Award®-winning actor John Turturro and noted playwright David Ives, who translated Reza’s work for this production. The panel will be moderated by Classic Stage Company’s Artistic Director Brian Kulick.

Hazel Rowley and Fabrice Rozié Present Beauvoir and Sartre: A Passionate Pact Thursday, February 8 at 7pm

Hazel Rowley, author of Tête-à-Tête: Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre (HarperCollins), and playwright Fabrice Rozié discuss love, passion, writing and sexual freedom.

Rowley’s book, described by the Los Angeles Times as “a fascinating study of a passion that transcended convention” and “the surprise page-turner of the season,” has received international acclaim. Rozié is the author of the highly successful off-Broadway play, Transatlantic Liaison, about Beauvoir’s love affair with American writer Nelson Algren.

This event will conclude with a book signing and reception.

Pamela Golbin Presents Balenciaga Paris Friday, February 23 at 7pm

Pamela Golbin, author and editor of Balenciaga Paris (Thames and Hudson), discusses the designer described by Christian Dior as “the master of us all.” Balenciaga Paris traces the designer’s collections year by year through photos, press clippings and sketches. Two main periods are explored in depth: 1937-1968, when Cristobal Balenciaga made his name during Paris’s golden age of fashion; and 1996-006, the revival of the House of Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière, one of the most celebrated designers in contemporary fashion.

Golbin is curator of twentieth-century and contemporary fashion at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile in Paris, where she has organized numerous major exhibitions including Balenciaga Paris and written the accompanying publications.

Lecture with Toni MorrisonMonday, March 5 at 7pm

Toni Morrison, Nobel-prize winning author, reflects on her experiences at the Louvre Museum, where she curated a multidisciplinary series last November around the theme “The Foreigner’s Home.” FIAF is proud to host this special evening as the opening event of Art is Otherwise, a four-day festival in New York mirroring the “conversation” that Morrison created in France.

The festival also includes a unique performance installation by choreographer William Forsythe, as well as a concert by the Alliance Players, curated and commented on stage by Morrison herself. Both events take place at the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

Visit fiaf.org for complete details.

Art is Otherwise is presented by American Friends of the Louvre, Baryshnikov Dance Foundation, Forsythe Foundation, the French Institute Alliance Française and Musée du Louvre.

An Evening with Philippe DecoufléSunday, March 4 at 7pm

French choreographer and director Philippe Decouflé presents three of his short films. Decouflé gained worldwide attention for the opening ceremonies he staged for the 199 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville. His work is strongly influenced by the circus and the teachings of American choreographer Alwin Nikolais, but also by costumes and objects that put a new twist on the human body and its mobility. The choreographer’s creativity highlights the relationship between machines and living things.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Decouflé in English.
