1 Company Profile Kurita Europe Kurita Europe GmbH, headquartered in Ludwigshafen, Germany, provides technologies for water, paper and process treatment. Founded 1989, our team consists now of 550 employees at 12 various offices in Europe and Middle East, covering the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) sales area. With own production facilities we contribute to a reliable supply chain for our customers. Our own R&D centers, laboratories and pilot test plants allow us to develop continuously customised state-of-the-art technologies. Our business line Paper Solutions is one of the market leaders for functional paper additives. We produce and sell 80,000 tons of strength and sizing polymers from our facilities in Europe and Asia. Our innovative chemistry and a high level of experienced services contribute to achieve operational excellence in the paper manufacturing process. Packaging & Board: Providing innovative solutions with our sizing agents, strength additives and pitch and sticky control additives to the specific needs of paper process.

4.1 Cetamine®

Cetamine® is an innovative and comprehensive technology based on filming polyamines for boiler water and steam treatment. It prevents scale and corrosion in feed water tanks, boilers, steam and condensate systems. The treatment is based on the combination of several actions:

Formation of a mono-molecular film, adsorbed on metal surfaces all over the system; this polyamine film constitutes a continuous barrier between water and metal, cutting out corrosion without affecting the heat transfer

Dispersion of scale-forming salts pH control by means of neutralizing amines

The main benefits of Cetamine® are:

4.2 S.sensing MX S.sensing MX is a new, modular analyzer system especially designed for cooling water applications.

This integrated system with its range of different controllers and analyzers allows to fit S.sensing MX to practically any application and need. At the same time it is only installed what is really needed at the customer site. The selection of analyzers are based on the real needs: There are analyzers available for Kurita product active as well as for KPI measurement. Therefore S.sensing MX gives double safety - to control the treatment and the success of the water treatment!

4.3 HydroBio® Advance

Online method to determine and monitor biofilm in all water systems

Biofilms have in water and especially cooling systems ideal conditions to grow: right temperature, high amount of nutrients and a lot of sunlight.

The control of biofilm is essential in water systems to limit the bacteria development such as Legionella. The monitoring of biofilm thickness is crucial in microbiological growth control.

Each year biofilm costs industry billions:

Biofilm reduces heat transfer and increases energy requirements

Biofilm provides an environment for anaerobic bacteria which corrode the system

Biofilm is a source for dangerous bacteria like Legionella

Kurita brings to market a new and innovative online method to determine and monitor biofilm: HydroBio® Advance is designed to automatically monitor thickness and development of the biofilm, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This innovative method combines a highly sensitive measurement of heat transfer with biofilm thickness.

The right biocide can be adjusted with the right dosage at the right time. The customer can respond to changes faster and improves water systems reliability with real time information using the Kurita HydroBio® Advance.

4.4 Next generation water recycling system

Kurita Water Industries Ltd. received order from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for the manufacture of a flight model of the company’s next generation water recycling and demonstration system. This system is scheduled to be installed in the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo” on the International Space Station.

Since entering a research agreement with JAXA in 2011 to study future-type water recycling systems, Kurita has conducted research on the elemental technology and treatment methods for a water recycling system that can recycle water (urine) and stably transform it into drinking water. It comprises a control and water treatment system made up of ion exchange units, electrolysis units and electrodialysis units.

To transform urine into purified drinking water, the system removes calcium and magnesium components from the urine through ion exchange, electrolyzes the organic substances using Kurita’s own special electrodes, and then removes the ions by means of electrodialysis.

It is a maintenance-free, compact and energy-efficient water recycling system that achieves a water recycling rate of 85% or more.

Infrastructure overload due to high population of refugees: Our donation helps to improve and maintain the water supply systems in the camps (e.g. excavation, pipe laying and backfilling of water pipelines for repairs and upgrading of the existing water reticulation system).

Lack of hygiene knowledge: With our donation, CARE improves the sanitation and hygiene status of the refugee population (e.g. latrine building, soap for hand washing in schools, sensitisation for proper waste disposal and use of dumpsites)

Ensuring basic education to children: CARE e.g. qualifies refugee teachers and provides a safer learning environment by renovating dilapidated classrooms.

From Japan to the world.

The Kurita success story began in the middle of the last century: Haruo Kurita founded Kurita Water Industries Ltd. in Japan in 1949. Initially the company provided the Navy with chemical products for the treatment and optimization of boiler water. Kurita extended its range and offered systems for water treatment shortly afterwards. The next expansion came in the 1960s with chemical solutions for process optimization in paper production, the petrochemical industry and in steel production.

Its growing expertise in water and process treatment, its leadership in the Asian market as well as continuous research and development allowed Kurita Water Industries to consolidate its global market position. Now, the Group is comprised of more than 52 international branches and subsidiaries – one of which is the Kurita Europe GmbH.
