And I don’t see it getting better any time soon. Sooooo …… with that said … The SFEA will begin it’s 2020/2021 meetings in September, however, it will look a bit different. We will be doing virtual meetings via Zoom. (I’m sure all of you have been doing many Zoom calls this summer.) The SFEA board has decided to get a premium membership with Zoom so we can have longer than a 45 min call and get all the perks. The September email will have all the log on details. We will be doing virtual meetings until we are allowed to meet in a restaurant again. Our meeting time will look different too: 5:00 pm : Meeting call to order with introductions, Announcements and Speaker Introduction. 5:15 - 6:00 pm : Speaker and Q&A 6:00 pm : Meeting will adjourn, however Zoom will be left open for more socializing. In the future, we hope to have breakout rooms for discussions after the speakers finish their talks.

Using Antimicrobial Coatings to Help Combat the Spread of Germs and BacteriaEDITED BY SCOTT FRANCIS Editor-In-Chief, Products Finishing

As the world works to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, our collective awareness of spreading germs is at an all-time high. Every surface is subject to suspicion. From railings to countertops to packages, every surface we touch is a potential danger. A Fed Ex package was recently left at my door and I left it on the porch overnight and kicked it into the house the next morning so I wouldn’t touch it with my bare hands. I’m sure many of you have been taking similar measures, which just a few of months ago would have seemed extreme. The coronavirus pandemic has forced everyone to become more aware of what we touch and what we come in contact with on a daily basis. Perhaps this heightened awareness can help to prevent future spread of germs.

Surfaces are everywhere and avoiding them is nearly impossible. We eat at a tabletop, our food is stored on shelves, to open doors you have to grab a handle, to fill your gas tank you have to grasp a fuel pump nozzle, and we walk everywhere. Simply walking exposes your shoes to all manner of microbes, which you then track and spread wherever you go. No matter the surface, its impossible to know who touched it last, what is on it and whether or not it is harmful. And while cleaning is vital, at the end of the day, there is no one answer to ensure that surfaces are clean and safe.

One solution that may help play a role in stopping the spread of germs are antimicrobial coatings. The technology has been on the market for more than a decade and the antimicrobial coatings global market is a billion-dollar industry, exceeding USD 3.2 billion in 2019.

While there are numerous antimicrobial coatings on the market with different formulations, those based on silver seem to be the most effective. One company, Vitracoat (Elkhart, Ind.), whose VitraGUARD line of coatings is designed to assist with this problematic paradigm. The technology is based on silver, a natural antimicrobial that has been shown to be effective in killing over 650 strains of bacteria, yeast, fungi and molds.

How Star Wars Inspired the Future of Robotics in ManufacturingPosted by Steven Brand

In a galaxy far, far away…

Well, how far exactly?

The technological advancements in the Star Wars universe may seem to be the stuff of fantasy. While Death Stars, droid armies, and flying starfighters are still just Hollywood creations, real world robotics have made epic advancements since Episode IV first debuted in 1977 (under the original title of  Star Wars, of course).

Although there is much to the films that is left to fantasy, some of the mechanical creations in Star Wars parallel robotic technology in real life. In fact, Star Wars may give insight into the future of robotics and it’s positive (besides the droid invasions).

Why Robotic Automation is the Future in Manufacturing

Robotics are an increasingly more common feature of modern manufacturing. In fact, 90% of all robots currently in existence are for industrial use. Each year, robotic automation becomes more cost-effective and efficient, so it’s clear that the future of robotics will see a greater presence in manufacturing. However, should people be concerned for their jobs?

The fear that robots will eventually replace humans, (or even stage a revolution and take over the world) is not uncommon. In fact, more than 70% of Americans are afraid that robots are “taking over their lives” and replace them in basic tasks.

The future of robotics should be welcomed and not feared. While there are some tasks that robotic automation will replace, robots actually help create more jobs and assist people. In fact, a good example of what the relationship between people and robots in the future would most likely look like is Star Wars.
