From the shadows of the temples: Abrahamic religions and their

contribution to education

Damir Bešlija

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The continuous process of secularisation has been active in many societies regardless of the ruling regimes

for many centuries. Since the education represents one of the most important and influential fields in

modern world, this transformation of society’s identification and affiliation from religious toward

nonreligious values has created a sort of aversion to religious teachings amongst scholars and people

overall. Consequently, the contribution of Abrahamic religions to the formation and establishment of

today’s educational institutions has been either neglected or observed as negative and decadent. However,

it is de facto that over the course of history Abrahamic faiths have overly contributed to the formation of

educational institutions we know today. Therefore, in this paper we discuss the teachings and perspectives

of Judaism, Christianity and Islam regarding knowledge and education, and present the positive influence

which religious teachings have had on the establishment of educational institutions.

KEYWORDS: secularisation, religious teachings, Abrahamic religions, knowledge, education.

The Places of Action in A Visit Story of Sezai Karakoç

Kemal Čedić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Sezai Karakoç is the writer who gained a reputation in modern Turkish literature with his short stories and

poems. Terms- such as Islam, civilization and humanity that form the axis of his thought – are the main

interests of his works. As a thinker who has witnessed the decadence of highly rated human values, Sezai

Karakoç considers that the teaching of modernity played the most important role in that negative process

that occured on Turkish teritories. In A Visit story which is the object of this research, Sezai Karakoç noted

the negative sides of urbanising as a product of modernity. After we have analyzed the locations where the

action takes place we have come to the conclusion that they play an important role in the storyline. By using

the method of text analysis, we have sorted out all the places of action that are to be found in the story such

as the village, the coffeehouse and the prayer house and we can conclude that the placement of these

locations is crucial for the essence of the narration. As Sezai Karakoc has written essays on different topics,

we used his philosophical views on the funcion of these locations in the social context. Actually, the

message that the writer wants to send us through the story is understood truly just by his description of the

places. So the inner or outer views of the places in A Visit story reflect the downfall of the human soul in

that period.

Türkçe ve Almanca Birleşik Cümlelerin Karşilaştirilmasi

Filiz Yıldızhan

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Her iki

Türkçe birleşik cümle yapısı tasnif edilirken; Muharrem Ergin´in; Türk Dil

Bilgisi, Zeynep Korkmaz´ın; Türkiye Türkçesi Gramer Şekil Bilgisi, Tahsin Banguoglu´nun; Türkçenin

Grameri ve Süer Eker´in; Çağdaş Türk Dili kitapları kullanılmıştır. Almanca birleşik cümle tasnifi için ;

Dursun Zengin’in; Modernes Deutsch Unter Allen Aspekten (Her yönüyle modern Almanca) ve Deutsche

romanından istifade edilmiş, Almanca örnekler için Siegfried Lenz´in “Deutschstunde” romanı

Tess of d’Ubervilles as a Pure Woman

Sadžida Ramović

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews one of the central aspects of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Tess as a Pure

Woman. Published in 1891, this masterpiece makes us question everything we thought we knew about

women and double standards. Struggles of one woman intertwined with the strict religious principles is

something the world has read about before. However, the greatness of Hardy's work lies in multiple

perspectives he offered while exploring the intricate relationships between a woman and a man, the complex

bond one has with God, the concepts of ancestry and wealth, as well as the concept of purity, which will be

explained further in this essay. Specifically, this paper will examine the societal roles women are bound to

play, (not only specific for the 19th century, but even today), the notion of purity and how it was the key of

Tess' tragedy, and with that the rape culture and the objectification of women in the world will be examined

as well. All things considered, Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a work of art that challenges readers to re-examine

their roles in society, especially if they are women. It challenges readers to question their sexual morals,

double standards and religious views.

English Language Proficiency Level of the Fourth-grade High

School Students in Canton Sarajevo

Fatima Kovačević

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The significance of learning the English language is evident in different areas, from employment

opportunities, establishing international contacts and offering a specter of opportunities for development

and advancement in educational and scientific purposes. It has been taught as the first foreign language

worldwide, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, where it is also widely present as an obligatory course in

elementary and high schools. However, a large discrepancy in students' English language proficiency can

be observed, with some students' knowledge being on an enviable level at the end of their secondary

schooling, whereas some other students' knowledge remaining on a rather low level. Despite the fact that

at the end of their high school education students are expected to reach B2 level (CEFR, 2011) of English

language proficiency (Ministry of Education 2016), this is very often not observed. Thus, the primary aim

of the current paper is to conduct pilot research in a high school in Sarajevo, by testing the fourth-year

students employing a specifically devised placement test. The main purpose of this research is to obtain

data on students' proficiency level, and to propose some solutions to the students' observed success or failure

in English language acquisition. Moreover, the obtained results will provide detailed information on the

students' real level of English language proficiency and might be of considerable significance for the overall

educational system. In this particular case, the data related to teaching and learning the English language

could be possibly extended to the schools across Bosnia and Herzegovina in some future research.

Impact of Culture on English Language Learning: A Comparison of

Bosnian and Turkish Foreign Language Education Systems in

Learning English

Naida Kadić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Over the past few decades, English learning has been increasing not just in its popularity but also in its need

for communication with emphasis on sociocultural factors that correlate with language education. The focus

of this paper is on the comparison of two cultures, more specifically Bosnian and Turkish, and how their

educational systems influenced their English language learning. The need for this research rises from the

increased cohabitation of the two closely related cultures which extended the curiosity of how the two

educational systems influenced students’ English language learning. Being closely related, these two

cultures have some significant differences that aid or hinder English learning which will further be

mentioned in the research paper along with their influence. Series of interviews, including a questionnaire,

used in this research, provide information about the sociocultural factors in English education. This research

is expected to enlighten the impacts or culture on/and English education, which will broaden horizons

paving the path for other researches.

How Sentence Complexity Influences our Understanding

Nejla Babić, Hidajeta Đogić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

It is a widely held belief that passive sentences are more complex in form than active ones, and despite

extensive research into the comprehension of ambiguous sentences, and research into the thematic roles of

passive sentences, little research has focused on the comprehension of the sentences in the passive voice

themselves. Thus, this study aims to investigate whether passive sentences take longer to comprehend. The

participants were foreign language learners divided into group A and group B. Both groups were asked to

read a simple story and then to answer a set of active and passive questions related to the story. Group A

answered four questions in the active voice first, and then four questions in the passive voice, while group

B answered the same questions in the opposite order. The research results indicate that the questions in the

passive voice do take longer to comprehend, which is being elaborated further in the current study through

in-depth research into the relationship between active and passive sentences.

Unusual If Conditional Sentence Construction

Belkisa Dervišević

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Throughout the high-school and primary school education, university-level students are exposed to real and

unreal conditional clauses. However, both types of conditional clauses are taught to foreign language

learners rather narrowly, in particular real conditional clauses where the only tenses claimed to be used are

the present simple tense in the subordinate clause and the future simple tense in the main clause. Due to the

fact that every in-depth analysis of corpus shows that real conditional clauses have many more possible

combinations than the one mentioned above, they seem to be the most poorly represented conditional

clauses in the books used in schools. Thus, this study aims to conduct an analysis of conditional sentences

through the corpus, which will determine how many conditional sentences out of all real conditional clauses

extracted do not use the basic, given combination of tenses. Additionally, through the use of a specifically-

designed questionnaire, it also aims to check whether the students of the English Language and Literature

Department are able to recognize real conditional clauses when exposed to them or whether they are able

to use them properly, despite their not being taught such structures explicitly.

Shakespeare in Sarajevo

Damir Kahrić

University of Sarajevo

ABSTRACT

This research paper will examine three basic elements of grave significance: firstly, it deals with general

condition of the stage in BiH and Shakespeare’s presence on it. A number of prominent actors and directors

of Shakespearean drama will be discussed in the light of their internationally recognized stature. The paper

will also introduce the post-colonial significance of Shakespeare in non-Anglophone cultures.

Performances of “Shakespeare Drama Club” UNSA, founded in 2000 by Prof. Shahab Yar Khan are also

included. Being the only amateur club in Sarajevo to have performed three plays in three evenings (during

Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary celebrations), the club’s founder and its actors conveyed the Bard’s

messages to the larger audience; i.e. Shakespeare’s ideas and worldviews of how a particular community

could be governed through a “matriarchal system”. The research focuses mainly on the characters of

Cordelia and Beatrice. Examples of Shakespeare’s depiction of strong, self-sufficient, and independent

women willing to go against the society controlled by men will be presented. These two characters,

unwilling to compromise on their honour, dignity or feelings serve as figures of rebellion in the world of

men endangering their status, privilege, and even life. In 2016, Shakespeare Club presented the tragic

repercussions of Cordelia’s exile from her family, due to her belief and worldviews, and in 2017, the

character of Beatrice was depicted in a similar parallel, but in this case, the heroine would not be subjugated

to any man even if it meant losing her affections for her significant other. Therefore, Professor Khan and

his team have produced and adapted a number of Shakespeare’s plays to draw close parallels with the

contemporary life in Sarajevo; the ideas of different economic, political, and family values have been

tackled in order to move the audience from the region of BiH closer to Shakespeare’s world.

KEYWORDS: Stage, club, non-Anglophone, performance, matriarchal, Cordelia

Debate in Contemporary Classroom

Amir Pečenković

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Ever since learning in schools and universities shifted to student-centered learning based on learning

theories of constructivists, the need for students to learn independently has become recognized. The debate

as a teaching strategy is in its nature an activity including peer-to-peer communication, competition and

requires both attention and activity to be executed. Drawing on the findings of prior studies related to debate

in teaching and learning, this study aims to present the benefits of debate, as well as the limitations on using

such an approach in the classroom.

EFL students' attitudes towards learning English language: The

case study of International Burch University students

Arnela Kačapor

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

After being given a full attention by the researchers of both first and second languages, attitudes are

considered as basic factors influencing language performance. These attitudes reflect learner's emotions,

affections and perceptions about language and serve as constructs of its linguistic behavior. The purpose of

this research study was to investigate students' attitudes towards English language learning at International

Burch University, grounded on three aspects: emotional, cognitive and behavioral. It also showed whether

there are any significant differences in the student's attitudes regarding English language learning based on

their demographic information( gender, field and year of the study). The study is quantitative, descriptive

in its nature. The survey instrument for this study was one attitude questionnaire, adopted from the Aptitude

Questionnaire Test employed by Boonrangsri, Chuaymankhong, Rermyindee, and Vongchittpinyo (2004),

the Attitude and Motivation Test Battery(AMTB) designed by Gardner (1985), and a Behavioral, Cognitive,

Emotional Attitude (BCEA) questionnaire(as cited in Abidin et al., 2012). SPSS software was used for the

data analyisis. There were 34 randomly selected respondents whose attitudes towards language learning

showed to be rather positive (in aspects mentioned above) than negative. Among thirty –four participants,

19 (55,9 %) of them were females and 15 (44,1%) of them were males. Additionally, differences between

the groups involved were not statistically significant and based on personal comprehension.

The study showed that International Burch University students at different departments hold highly positive

attitudes towards English language learning.

The Use of Euphemisms in L2

Merima Selimović

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Euphemism is a word or expressions that substitutes unpleasant or offensive expressions with politically

and morally correct one. Euphemisms are used on a daily basis, both consciously and unconsciously either

to amuse or to camouflage harsh or vague terms. This paper aims to investigate the familiarity with and the

use of euphemisms in the English language by Bosnian EFL learners. The results indicate that despite the

fact that a large number of participants are not aware of what euphemisms are, they use them regularly,

which indicates that people are more comfortable to speak about sensitive and taboo topics using adequate

terminology to avoid unpleasant and uncomfortable situations.

Analysis of Mercedes-Benz Advertisement Discourse

Hasan Okanović

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Drawing upon the theoretical framework proposed by Michael Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan (1976), this

paper analyzes two car advertisements in terms of formal, functional and social approach to discourse

analysis. Despite a substantial body of research conducted on the discourse of advertising, the way different

companies use language to appeal to the audience and represent themselves as a certain type of company

has not been researched in-depth. Therefore, this paper analyzes the transcription of the video

advertisements published by Mercedes Benz. The research indicates that the company represents

themselves as the best company in the world, which make cars exclusively for successful people. In

addition, certain models of the company (S Class) are represented to be made for men.

ABSTRACT

Explaining Aggressive Advertising and The Brand Fetishism of the

Youth Through Marx and Freud

Matija Popović

Second Gymnasium

ABSTRACT

Shortly after Marlboro Friday, corporations have figured out the reason for a short crisis of their market

failures. It turned out that their regular customers, in the time of recession, started taking care of the price

of the product, rather than its prestige. Shortly thereafter, companies have again started bombarding people

with advertisements, but this time, they started targeting another demographical group - the youth. They

have finally realised that grownups are becoming more conscious of inflated prices and their

(in)differentiation in use - value from less expensive products. They have realised that only teenagers are

left on the list of status-buying customers. After a short questionnaire conducted on high school students, I

have realised that this problem is taking hold, especially given the results - 1 in 4 students has felt

discriminated in a society where they have been wearing a brand cheaper than the others. Profit-seeking, a

usual and justified trait of capitalism has produced a form of discrimination. But still, the biggest question

is how could they make someone buy their clothes? By appealing to our primal sex instincts through

advertisements that include nudity, which is a weak point during puberty because of the release of

hormones, corporations have tried to persuade youth to exclusively buy their products which will then buy

them socially desirable status, and with such friends, sexual partners etc. After few products bought, it

turned out that teenagers no longer buy products because of their use-value, but their social values which

resulted in teenagers being ''possessed'' by brands. This paper aims to explain such a phenomenon or, better

call it, occurrence because it is getting very ordinary, by synthesizing two very prominent theories of the

20th century - psychoanalytic and Marxist. In particular, by Marx's Fetishism of Commodities and Freud's

instinct of Eros.

Difference Between Similar Words Written Separately and

Assembled

Berina Šijerkić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The main goal of our project was to determine the difference between similar words written separately and

assembled (however vs. how ever, into vs. in to, etc.) We explored the words’ history, their evolution to the

present day, their meaning and the context they were used in, and we provided numerous examples.

Moreover, we conducted a study in which students were supposed to share their knowledge about the

distinction between these words. The study method used was a questionnaire with four different items. The

participants were native and foreign language speakers, including 20 and 21 years old Turkish and Bosnian

students. Our findings showed that native speakers are more aware of this difference than second language

speakers, but they get confused when it comes to the formal and informal usage of the aforementioned

words. The research also indicated that in order to use these words properly, one must look at the context

because there is no pattern to locate and to follow the evolution of these words, and therefore every word

is an expression for itself and it is used in a different context.

Transdisciplinarity of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences – Past,

Present and Future

Benjamin Avdić, Danijel Vasilj

University of Tuzla

ABSTRACT

Education and rehabilitation science is a social science that studies people with disabilities, whose

authenticity is based on inter, multi and transdisciplinarity with numerous other sciences. The key of the

theory and practice of education and rehabilitation science is in the observation of a human as a

biopsychosocial structure, and the contemporary education and rehabilitation experts' practice has a holistic

approach, including the biological, psychological and social dimensions, and resting on the foundations of

team work. Historically speaking, it is a relatively young science whose development was primarily

influenced by the philosophy of a certain period and the historical relation of the social community towards

people with disabilities. This paper presents the most important milestones in the historical development of

education and rehabilitation science, its evolutionary phases and the protagonists that have given

importance to establishing the overall scientific system of higher rank and the founding of this science as

an independent one. Future perspectives are aimed at strengthening its uniqueness as an interdisciplinary

approach to humans as the only form of work in contemporary education and rehabilitation, but the practical

application of this form of work is, in its essence, a challenge. The current scientific thought endeavors to

develop, strengthen science, and strives to realize all the rights of people with disabilities and their

inclusion.

Jane Eyre as a Byronic hero(ine)

Ahmetspahić Adisa, Rumejsa Ribo

University of Zenica

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to offer a new understanding of the Byronic hero through the character of Jane Eyre. By

definition, Byronic hero presents a potent individual who defiantly breaks the social norms of his time as

they oppose his own moral philosophy. Ever since the archetype of the Byronic hero was created, only male

characters in literature have been characterized as such, from Byron’s Childe Harold, Emily Bronte’s

Heathcliff, to Dumas’ Dantes. Even though she was a female, Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte’s title character,

displayed behavior resembling that of the previously mentioned male characters. This indicates that Jane

Eyre did not only break the social norms of her time but also the mold of the Byronic hero. On her journey

from childhood to adulthood, many tried to suppress her wayward behavior. However, she always managed

to rise above such plights and continued going off the beaten track, just like other Byronic heroes. Relying

on the close-reading method, this paper follows Jane Eyre through different stages of her life in which she

reveals her Byronic nature.

sectors. After the accountant records the transactions and the company reveals their performance, there is a

group of people that check and fulfill what the company or employees might have missed or maybe hid

from public. That group of people or individuals are called the auditors. Their job is to check if the

performance of the company is regular and if it matches the criteria set by the government, it gets a positive

appraisal. This study will feature what is audit profession, what it represents and what it was before, what

challenges were and what challenges are now faced by the auditors, what is the situation and what is

happening in our region of the Balkans and in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this study, it will also be

Nature of Types of Fraud

Emina Ćiber

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The total extent of business losses due to intended false representation of accounting data is difficult to

determine. Fraud comes in many shapes and sizes, and encompasses a lot of different activities. Hidden

debt, inflated revenues, generated returns, falsified balances and embezzlement are just some of the many

forms of fraud– one of the most critical global-growing problems in the financial industry today. This

conceptual model focuses mainly on the most common types of financial frauds – asset misappropriation,

financial statement fraud, and bribery and corruption. Huge amounts of cash are lost, bringing disastrous

consequences –not only destroyed companies, but peoples' lives too. This is why businesses require

transparent corporate reports in order to ensure that decisions are not based on misstated financial

statements. For this reason, managers, auditors, investors and regulatory agencies need to be able to detect

and prevent potential financial disasters. The author’s goal is to encourage a common sense approach to

understanding and detecting fraud, its nature and its various forms. Every of the three main financial frauds

will be separately interpreted and explained.

Economic Effects of the UK leaving the European Union

Dalila Ivković

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The UK has been a member of the European Union since 1973. The European Union gives numerous

economic advantages to part nations. These incorporate free trade, internal speculation from European

organizations, free movement of labour, harmonization of controls and capabilities and the stability of being

in world's biggest trade square. In any case, faultfinders contend that the European Union forces

unnecessary expenses on business and hampers the UK capacity to develop. Leaving the EU could empower

the UK to have the economic advantages of a Single Marketwithout unnecessary expenses and bureaucracy.

The principle economic effect of leaving the EU would be less free trade with the EU. The UK at present

has facilitated commerce with every one of the 28 European nations, empowering a scope of imports and

fares. When the UK leaves, it will most likely be unable to arrange replacement free trade deals with every

one of the 27 nations. This could prompt exchange preoccupation and a negative effect on the UK trade

industry. The effect of Brexit will affect the economy for a long time. It additionally relies upon the kind

of arrangement and new exchanging courses of action made. In the quick repercussions of the vote, the

economy was moderately versatile, however, the degrading has started lessening expectations for everyday

comforts. Joined with poor profitability development, development conjectures have been downsized,

causing a crumbling in broad daylight funds.

ABSTRACT

Since the establishment of the European Union, many European countries have applied for its membership

to increase the economic growth and negotiating power, as well as to enhance different regulations and

rules. The main purpose of this study is to investigate why Switzerland has never applied for the European

Union membership. The investigation is performed by analyzing different economic indicators of

Switzerland, presented as advantages or disadvantages. The study also explains how Switzerland trade with

the members of the European Union and exchange its goods and services even if it is not the Union’s

member. The focus of the study is set on the economic and political stability of the country which make it

attractive when it comes to the foreign direct investment which positively affects the economic growth. The

economy of Switzerland mainly depends on the service sector that is highly developed, as well as on the

manufacturing industry based on educated people who know how to use high-technology. The study

highlights the power of Swiss franc, known as a safe haven for investment. Data retrieved from research

articles, reports, and books used for this study confirm the power and competitiveness of Switzerland's

economy even though it has not joined the European Union.

Rwandan Genocide – Causes of Conflict and End of Genocide

Amer Kurtović

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

This paper briefly chronicles a portion of Rwandan history (ca. 1500 – 1994) in order to identify the causes

of the long-standing conflict between the Hutu majority and the Tutsi minority groups and analyzes the

course of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda to draw conclusions regarding the end of the genocide. The main

cause of the conflict is identified as deep-rooted resentment by the Hutus against the Tutsis and the main

conclusion drawn regarding genocide is that the realist elements of international politics (i.e. military

power) as opposed to liberal elements of international politics (i.e. sanctions) proved decisive in stopping

the genocide. In other words, through inductive reasoning, it can be concluded that the best way to stop

genocide and other similar crimes is not through the international community but rather through the victim

group’s hard power. The former argument is widely accepted by the academic community but hardly known

by laymen, while the implications of the latter can be interpreted as an affront to the established international

system and prevailing values. It is far from definitive and needs further comparative studies to allow for

generalization, which is the topic of subsequent works.

Use of Benford's Law in Dedication of Financial Statement Fraud

Neira Memić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The goal of this research is to inspect all parts of how to prevent financial statement frauds using Benford’s

Law, with the information mining systems, and find the accessible and open data to intermediary factors.

Benford’s Law is a distribution that the first digits of many data sets conform to. It can be used to analyse

all data which have big values, data with variety of numbers, data that do not have pre-defined maximum

or minimum value.

In this research paper, we will examine how Benford's Law can be used to prevent (or detect) financial

statement fraud. Numbers in financial statements cannot be analysed alone one by one - they need to have

some correlation, to multiply them and then investigate. If certain data does not conform to Benford's Law,

it does not mean that it is a fraud, but it is a ''red light'' for further investigation.

In implementing Benford's Law in finding financial statement fraud, first needed is data-mining, and then

implementation of Benford's Law to spot any incorrections.

ABSTRACT

This research examines the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders of financial reporting in prevention

and detection of fraud. The methods used and types of transactions most vulnerable to fraudulent financial

reporting are examined. For the need of the empirical part of the paper, the questionnaire survey was

conducted. The respondents, external auditors, evaluated how often they encounter circumstances

indicating the possibility of fraud. In accordance with the conducted research the most common technique

used to fraudulent financial reporting involved overstatement of assets. This research work tries to find a

solution to financial statement fraud. Another area on which the research work will focus on is 'auditor

involvement in solving fraud problems'. Also, corporate governance will be considered as a tool in fraud

prevention and cost of fraud will be discussed as well. Fraud is a very big business risk which, if not

prevented, has a very negative impact on organizational performance.

Review of Data Mining Techniques in Detection of Financial

Statement Fraud

Minela Selman

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Financial statement fraud represents material misstatements of the accounting records with the aim of

misleading creditors, investors, and other relevant users of financial statements. The phenomenon of

financial statement fraud affects the economy throughout the world. One of the ways to combat fraud

occurrence is to strengthen law system and improve audit procedure when it comes to revision of financial

statements. However, fraudsters are versatile and will typically discover approaches to go around such

measures. A few data mining techniques have been created that enable one to extract significant knowledge

from financial statements in order to built the model that will recognize warning signs of fraudulent

statements. A thorough reading of financial statements can demonstrate whether the company is running

smoothly or is in trouble. This paper investigates the economic viability of data mining techniques in

detecting fraudental financial statements. In this paper three Data Mining techniques are presented such as:

Logistic Regression (LR), Genetic Programming (GP) and Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN).

Performance of three techniques is analyzed and compared on the basis of two important evaluation criteria,

namely, sensitivity and specifity.

ABSTRACT

Email marketing is a dynamic marketing platform that includes sending messages to users’e-mail

addresses. The following trend is a continuous process and one of the key factors of a successful online

marketing campaign. Internet advertising has several advantages over conventional forms. One of the

purposes of the research paper is to address advantages and disadvantages of email marketing. Since email

marketing is something that all companies are using, we conducted a survey of companies about their

preferences whether they want to directly promote themselves by email marketing or if they want to target

by social networks or browsing. We also conducted an online research to see whether email marketing is a

useful and safe way of promotion. Companies can track all visitors’ statistics on their websites and

customers of the product or service. Because of the explosive growth of popularity and use of social

networks, especially email, those points of contact are some of the most powerful tools for promoting a

company and marketing its business on the Internet. By using email marketing, customers are provided

with a free (email address only) and fast way of promoting themselves or their products. There is no limit

to this type of marketing, no money is needed, and it is the fastest way to promote companies worldwide.

Will Turkey Join the EU? Turkey's Accession to the European

Union

Dženita Šljivo

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Turkey has always been and always will remain one of the most important countries to the enlargement of

the European Union. The importance of this country’s relationship with the EU is rooted in historic time.

The relationship between Turkey and the European Integration Institution began with Turkey’s application

membership in the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1959. Turkey received access to full

membership and was approached to candidate status in 1999. Since its membership in the EEC the relation

between Turkey and the European Union have gained extensive progress and opened a journey for Turkey

to become a member of the community of 28 countries in the EU. Turkey's case of accession to the EU has

so far been a vicious cycle of ebbs and flows. The start of Turkey’s accession process towards the EU began

officially in 2005 and yet today is still an ongoing process. This research paper analyzes the potential

advantages, disadvantages and Turkey’s impact on the EU membership for both sides. It highlights

economic, political, social and security factors of its accession to the EU. The paper investigates the

relationship of Turkey with the „Big Three“ and otherminormember states. The main conclusion of this

paper is taking into consideration all effects and benefits of the membership to outweigh the possible

disadvantages for both sides.

Environmentally friendly

Sahar Yousif

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Air humidity is the amount of water vapor present in the atmosphere. The humidity in air varies from area

to area in temperature and atmospheric pressure. Humidity in atmosphere transforms into fog when it is at

100%, and when it is around 30%, atmosphere becomes dry and is transformed into dew.

High humidity in atmosphere is harmful to humans, food, buildings and environment in some hot coastal

places like Dubai and Sudan.

There is a relationship between human health and weather; since the physical functions respond to weather

changes, high humidity in air affects human health more than warming of atmosphere because the increase

of them both leads to excessive sweating that can cause loss of vital fluids and salts. That consequence

leads to the collapse of body temperature, and that is worse than disease. It might cause fatal asthma attacks.

High humidity also has bad effects on environment; when humidity rises in a particular environment, it

makes the environment fertile for the growth and activity of microorganisms, frequent living and rodents

enzymatic activity in animal and plant food, chemical reaction and physical changes, the spread of mold

fungi in homes and buildings. That consequently leads to spread of infections and, in tourist areas, the

visitors lose pleasure due to high humidity and heat. Because of that we created our machine to fix the

problem in air, so that people can breathe easily, and we will turn heat of sun into cool air. Therefore, we

will create a healthy environment and provide healthier life. Also, we will turn air humidity into water that

can be used for various purposes.

KEYWORDS: air humidity, atmosphere, heat, environment, health, transformation, cool air.

Y-Chromosomal Haplogroup Distribution in Balkan Countries; A

Concordance Study Using Four Different in Silico Algorithms Based

on Y-Str Data

Amina Beširović

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Y-chromosome is exclusively inherited by male lineage. Lack of recombination makes Y chromosome

inexhaustible source of information of our past. Consequently, this study is focused on identifying the most

abundant haplogroups in the samples from Balkan populations and comparing with the findings from an

earlier study performed on the populations from the Balkans. Furthermore, the overall performance

characteristics, such as the probabilities for each haplogroup assignment made by the four different

algorithms were investigated and assessed through a concordance study using the same Y-STR dataset.

Finally, a successful identification of the prevailing Y chromosome haplogroups in the Balkan countries

provided an interesting updated insight into Y haplogroup distribution. The target populations are Bosnians,

Serbians, Montenegrins, Albanians from Albania, Romanians, Albanians from Kosovo, Greeks, Croats,

Hungarians from Hungary, Romani from Hungary, Bulgarians, Slovenians. In this study following four

different in silico haplogroups, assignment algorithms were used; Whit Athey’s Haplogroup Predictor, Jim

Cullen’s World Haplogroup Predictor, Vadim Urasin’s Predictor and the NevGen Y-DNA Haplogroup

Predictor. According to the predictors, the three most abundant haplogroups are I2a, E1b1b and R1a.

Results are compared and proved compatible with previous studies on Balkan population. Using four

different predictors enabled us to obtain more accurate results on haplogroup distribution and see

differences and similarities between Balkan population haplogroup trees. Obtained results are analyzed

Disabled people and other users of ramps, in Visoko do not have

appropriate entrances to the public buildings and zones

Sumeja Zukić

ABSTRACT

During the construction of different buildings in Visoko, people with disabilities are usually put in the

background and are not able to use some of the public buildings. This paper aims to explore and analyze

possible entrances to public buildings for people with disabilities and other users of vertical

communications/ramps in the city of Visoko, and to asses whether they are appropriate or not. In

comparison with the standards of EU regulations, this paper finds that these standards are partially satisfied,

some of those public building entrances do not have an appropriate entrance for disabled people in terms

of correctness of slope of ramp as well as its length, materials, and turning way. Qualitative method, based

on researched books, standards and needs for disabled people are used. Each entrance to the public buildings

was measured by ramp width, height, slope and according to given standards, and evaluated whether they

are appropriate or not. This paper confirms that the process of making ramps for disabled people is different

for different buildings and mostly are made just to satisfy the standard of building regulations, without

correct and functional measures. For input data, photographs, which will be attached in this research paper,

are used.

Landmark in front of City Hall Sarajevo

Nadina Hrvić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Sarajevo is a keeper of some of the most beautiful objects in the world. One of them is the City Hall of

Sarajevo. Placed in the heart of Sarajevo, everyone stays speechless on its composition. However, the only

thing that one can do there to enjoy its beauty is to come in front of it, take a photography and leave.

The problem that needs to be solved is the view point on the city hall near to it. It can be solved by placing

a landmark with sitting places across the river Miljacka which is in front of the City Hall. This landmark,

which have three levels, the lowest point being on -80cm and highest point on 190cm, is designed to

completely integrate the surrounding. Also, on other side, it is designed to be of function to Sarajevo's

citizens as well as to be attractive to tourists who are visiting the town.

The goal is to enrich Sarajevo's environment with something that is functional and attractive and give the

City Hall what it really deserves.

Multi Unit Residential Complex

Mirheta Džebo

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

A design of a multi-residential complex is proposed for the site that is located in Sarajevo, Marijin Dvor -

a historically significant area where multiple different conditions co-exist. Challenging condition of the

project is how to incorporate urban and natural context within the immediate site, which is located along

the main road in between SCC Shopping Centre and the new residential building Dvor. The proposed design

responds to urban context by following the existing heights as well as facade’s rhythm of the surrounding

buildings. The building complex is opened towards the residential buildings on the east and closed from

the west, where the shopping center is located, in order to provide more privacy, reduce amount of noise

and increase quality of the views and light into semi public courtyard which is the focal point of the whole

design. The function and contents of the ground floor are directly linked to the courtyard and offer a lot of

content that can be used both by the residents of complex, by the surrounding buildings as well as other

visitors. Passage through the whole complex represents a transition between urban and natural contexts

from the north to the south. This project of a multi-residential complex proposes one way of how natural

features of surrounding could be integrated into urban context.

Convenient journey

Minea Čopra

ABSTRACT

Located in the heart of Sarajevo, in the close proximity to the Eternal Flame, a new building for a

Contemporary Gallery is proposed. The site is located next to the main road; the place is well visited

throughout the day. The lot is surrounded by buildings from Austro-Hungarian era as well as a smaller

number of buildings of later periods, while the site itself slopes in the north-south direction, ascending from

the main road into the hilly terrain at the back.

The concept of the project is to incorporate the terrain into the object. The building is envisioned as a

journey of decent that begins with outdoor ramp-stairs. With specific one-way circulation, visitors are

guided throughout the gallery. From the moment visitor enters the gallery, he or she gets isolated from the

outside world. With artificial lighting, art is in the main focus to a visitor. The game is equally occurring

through all three exhibition spaces of the gallery, giving the visitor a disassociation from the outside world

allowing them thus to focus on experiencing the art.

The new gallery is enriching both the immediate and wider surrounding. It is new, up-to-date building

which cannot remain unnoticed while passing down the street. It enhances and develops a new opportunity

for the citizens.

KEYWORDS: contemporary gallery, Austro-Hungarian, art, one-way circulation.

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Interior Design

Laila Mušić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

This research paper aims to seek the existence of a correlation between artificial intelligence technologies

and interior design, within the architectural field. More specifically, the goal of this research seeks to answer

the question: Is there a correlation between artificial intelligence and interior design? Knowing whether or

not there is a correlation can solve an issue of dichotomy between architectural and information technology

fields, and can point as to whether or not venturing into and expanding this correlation would help solve

problems in interior design. The method used to answer this question is a thorough summary of current,

existing literature and scientific works on the subject, and compiling the evidence to support or refute a

correlation between AI and interior design. The summary is then formulated into a concise answer as to

how AI can benefit interior design in the future. It is found that AI can help synthesize various ergonomic

interior design arrangements, generate digital interior designs, and control interior appliances in a smart

home. In conclusion, there is a correlation between artificial intelligence and interior design. Future research

could expand on this work by recognizing and categorizing the various types of artificial intelligence, in

specific, used in interior design.

Multiunit Residential Complex x2

Irhad Kentra

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

One of the main, historically significant parts of Sarajevo is Marijin Dvor. As a part which was built during

the Austro Hungarian period, Marijin Dvor is recognizable by its multi-residential buildings with inner

courtyards. The site for the proposed building is positioned between the residential complex of Dvor on the

east side and SCC Shopping center on the west side, while the predominantly urban zone lies on the north

and the green zone on the south side.

Since the northern part of the site is dense, crowded and features a busy main street, the proposed building

follows the height of the surrounding buildings in order to create a urban continuity along the main street,

while at the same time providing a protected inner part that would act as an urban oasis. As a connection

between the two zones, a linear passage is formed which dictates the organization of the public space

followed with commercial and entertainment content of the ground floor. Furthermore, the building

cascades towards the south in order to introduce more sunlight as well as to enrich the view and add open

green spaces for the residences.

Proposed complex design corresponds in every way to the existing state of the site and contributes and

improves the content of this part of the city. With a specific form of the building and content within the

object, this design will become important both for residents of complex and the surrounding buildings.

Does a Highway Sarajevo-Zenica Affect Employment of Smaller

Peripheral Cities?

Abdulah Yousef, Semra Hasić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

In 2014, Bosnia and Herzegovina got a new motorway on relation between Sarajevo and Zenica. Motorway

A1 is part of the Corridor Vc which connects Croatia and Hungary to Adriatic Sea. When the project gets

done it will be main link to Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Adriatic Sea to Central Europe. Current stage

of construction is passing next to few smaller cities in periphery that includes: Ilijaš, Visoko and Kakanj

that have exits from highway. Aim of this paper is to research influence of the existing highway on the

economic development in the sector of employment in the smaller adjacent cities. The study will examine

whether the number of employees is higher or smaller taking in consideration time of three years before

and three years after opening the highway. Methodology used for this research is based on various

information sources, including books related to the development of economy and employment, plenty of

web pages, especially those addressed on main web sites of the related cities. Some of the important

information are taken from direct contact with municipality, and calculations from their statistics. The

results of this exploration showed that in some peripheral cities the number of employees increased after

the opening of the highway, while in one of them it decreased.

It is concluded that construction of the highway on relation Sarajevo-Zenica has brought good effects on

the employment in peripheral cities. However, if the price of usage of the highway increased, it would offer

increase of development in the sector of employment in the cities that are on the middle point of the

highway, equally distanced from Sarajevo and Zenica. The limitation that was faced during the research

was the fact that the highway was opened relatively in recent time, only three years ago. Due to slow

development of all economic sectors this short time shows small differences in percentage, but it is a good

point of showing that in the future number of employees will increase.

Cinema Complex (Sarajevo Film Festival)

Merjem Berbić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF), as one of the most famous events in region, gives big importance to the city

of Sarajevo and greatly influences its economic and cultural development. Followed by bigger number of

visitors from year to year, it also greatly affects the city's tourism. The fact that such a festival, with all its

importance, is taking place separately on different location within the city, brings to the idea of building a

cinema complex which will unify all functions and give appropriate space for such events. The proposed

site is in the center of the city, across National Theater, alongside river Miljacka. The concept was mostly

influenced by the orientation of the site and the site's approach paths. Site conditions and stretchy material

forms, the push-pulled building concept was created, a very dynamic form that translates the festival

rhythm. The design concept is also tightly related to the perception of the site.

The design was started by pulling out four corners, and resulting form gives us feeling of abstract connection

with all today's SFF locations. At the same time, it accentuates the approach paths to the building, which

are from all four sides. Entrances are accented by the given shape, giving the feeling of drawing in to the

visitors. This produces cross movement both around and within the object. On the upper levels, pulled

corners of volume on the north side give a great and open view to the National Theater and festival square.

Between the building and the river Miljacka, a promenade is planned, which will represent the natural

extension of the nearby promenade of Mak Dizdar and will draw more visitors to the site. Proposed building

design will represent the significance of SFF and will upgrade the bank of Miljacka river, all of that while

giving to the city a new cultural venue throughout the year.

Soil-Structure Interaction and Prefabrication as Prevention from

Structural Damages

Zerina Hajdarevic

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Countries around the world face the problem of structural damages and human casualties due to natural

hazards such as earthquakes, high speed winds, landslides etc. When it comes to build environment, it is

almost impossible to construct an object which will 100% resist any type of disaster and stay undamaged.

However, there are still some methods which may improve building performance and reduce damages and

deflections during disasters.

This paper provides an overview of literature resources that discuss some of the most usual causes of

structural damages that can appear in engineering objects. It discusses the importance of soil quality which

greatly influences building performance but is often neglected in projects. Another consideration is

prefabrication which has proved to have very good seismic performances and is therefore more preferable

than conventional methods.

Paying attention to site and soil investigation and adapting buildings to the area, climate and weather

requirements can substantially reduce damages. Conventional and prefabrication methods both have their

advantages and disadvantages when it comes to disaster resistance. While conventional houses should be

improved by strengthening methods to ensure better structural stability, prefabricated houses have been

proved to have better performance due to the flexibility provided by their joints. Hence, this method is still

not preferred due to misconceptions about prefabricated objects but is likely to be spread in the near future.

Multi-Unit Residential Complex

Almedina Trbalić

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The designed multi-unit residential complex is located in Sarajevo, in the neighborhood of Marijin Dvor –

also identified as a second centre of Sarajevo. Characteristic about the plot is the contrast between the north

and the south side. Namely, in the north it faces the arterial street and the urban, dynamic part, while in the

south it is surrounded by a more peaceful, green area of the town.

Responding to the given situation on the north, the complex has been positioned to follow and extend

existing geometry of the street and neighboring buildings. The form of the complex protects the apartments

and the inner courtyard from external influences, while at the same time allowing the orientation of the

apartments toward the inner courtyard. Due to the need of providing enough sunlight into the apartments,

opening the views, and to assure quality of living space, building is terraced down towards the south. As

the result, the north elevation of seven storeys serves not only as a geometric adaptation to the context but

also as a protection for the inner court, against the noisy main street and with both cars and trams. At the

south side, however, there are only three storeys, which further reflects the contrast of the north and south.

As the main vision of the design was to create a connection between these two zones, the final step was

opening passages for walkers on the ground floor. The passages allow easier approach to the area of the

green zone on the south, from the dense crowded street on the north, while creating inner semi-public space

which corresponds to the commercial content of the ground floor of the building, where residents have the

opportunity to socialize without need for going out of the complex.

Semi-opened courtyard with contents of promenade, kids playground, open restaurant garden, potentiates

an upgrade of the quality of social relationships; while, on the other side, it procreates a slight transition

from the concrete and materials of similar origin towards the nature.

Inner courtyard contributes to positive perceptions of livability for the residents who prefer interactions

with community outside of the building, and offers different space experience for users. As the final result,

there is a multi-storey residential complex serving as a ‘merging point’ between the urban environment and

the calm natural zone.

ABSTARCT

Marijin Dvor represents the complexity of the multi-layered history of Sarajevo. The neighborhood was

initially built during Austro-Hungarian period with a predominant typology of full block multi-residential

courtyard building. The site for the project presented lies within this neighborhood between the new

residential building Dvor and SCC shopping center.

Along the northern side of the location lies the main street which is crowded and busy. As the result, the

building follows the street’s facade in height and proportion to defend the inner part of the complex from

noise. To introduce more sunlight to the inner area of the building from the south, the southern part of

building has reduced height. Inner space is the envisioned courtyard of the Austro-Hungarian period and is

designed as contemporary courtyard opened to two sides with a canopy, a covered passage for pedestrians.

Both southern and northern buildings ground floors are supporting and enriching the inner opened space

with their content.

The designs of the contemporary building, courtyard and public space are fitting into the urban part of the

city in which it is located. Building content attracts both inhabitants and passengers to enjoy in its inner

closed space.

KEYWORDS: Multi-residential courtyard building, Inner space, Austro-Hungarian period, contemporary.

Multi-Unit Residential Complex

Anisa Glumčević

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Marijin Dvor is a historically rich and architecturally versatile neighborhood of Sarajevo for which a

proposal for a design of a multi-unit residential building was done. The contrast of the site is represented

through the influence of north arterial street that is urban and dynamic, and calm southern front that

overlooks a park and a recreational zone.

By approaching the site and analyzing the neighborhood pattern, a decision to form a courtyard was made,

in order to create an intimate oasis within such urban context. A passage was indicated through the volume,

inviting and allowing direct communication between the two streets. The building was open towards the

south, providing unobstructed views, which resulted in alternation of volume heights. The concept was

driven by an idea of healthy living and connecting with nature, which governed the ground floor activities.

That allowed for a hierarchy of public and semi-public spaces, which contributed to the distinctive gradation

of content through section. Along the southern part of the lot, a promenade was indicated to stimulate the

curiosity of passers and invite them into the courtyard to discover its values. The elevation treatment was

inspired by the verticality of surrounding trees, introducing elongated plank cladding with clambering

plants, carrying out the green motive into third dimension.

The building concept was designed to encourage and invite the residents of this and surrounding buildings

to a healthier lifestyle, and bring them together in animating not only themselves but the entire complex,

providing them with a stronger sense of community.

A Story of Green Terraces

Azaudin Saračević

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

The location of the multi-unit residential complex is Marijin Dvor in Sarajevo, between the SCC shopping

center and a new residential building. The site is in between two opposite contexts - green context on the

south, and urban context on the north, which represents the main challenge of the location as to how to

establish contact and correlation between these two contexts.

The answer comes as a transition zone. The duality of the two zones is solved by the connection in which

the transition from the noisy place to the green context occurs. Transition occurs through two passages on

the ground level of the building. On the north facade of the building, monumental approach was used, and

on the south facade, softer terraced approach which corresponds with green context. The proposed solution

embraced the a transition between two zones and connects the urban and green context.

The proposed contemporary design of building, with terraces and a public space, completely fits into an

urban part of the city in which it is located. The building content attracts both inhabitants and the passers

to enjoy in its public green space.

ABSTRACT

The project of this residential house was located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project is a

renovation of an existing house but had to be adapted to fit the concept of open space interior due to client

requirements. The client is a single man, with long working hours and, as a result, the house is envisioned

as an oasis and restful place. The client also wanted an industrial-styled interior, especially in the more

public area of the house. The house was remodeled so it had an open space environment, a gallery facing

the living room, and big windows to emphasize the living room height. The ground floor and the first floor

are connected in the center of the house, with floating staircase. The kitchen and dining room, which are

done in industrial style, are set in between the living room and the stairs. The first part of the house upon

entrance contains a bar and a billiard table, while the first floor gallery was fitted with a library, industrial

bookshelves and is a real relaxing part of the house. The rest of the first floor is enclosed and private and it

also contains a walk-in closet, laundry room, master bedroom and a master bathroom. The space is a retreat

that encourages relaxation due to the nature of its design.

Sarajevo Museum of Contemporary Arts

Hekim Celik

International Burch University

ABSTRACT

Sarajevo has been under influence of several architectural periods and styles throughout its history. The

proposed site for a new contemporary art museum lays within the historic core, in the close proximity of

the iconic symbol of Sarajevo - the “Eternal Flame”.

The location was challenging as buildings from different historical periods co-exist, being, at the same time,

just one block away from the main pedestrian street Ferhadija. During the designing process, the urban

pattern and the heritage of the site itself needed to be protected in order to keep the same era. The concept

for this project was created by selecting three major cultural points in the city and by conceptually

connecting them. Although the intent was to keep the character of the era the same, the main intention was

also to make a clear contrast between the existing content and the new building. The building popped out

from the convergent lines and yet it fits to the already existing urban pattern. Inside the building, the aim

was to create a journey through the spacethat changes on every level. Vertical circulation and light played

a big role in the designing process as long and narrow openings were used, and they followed the form of

the building all the way through. The site was designed as a series of cascades and it creates a visual

connection on the sloped site. Those cascades are also an urban orbit where people can meet, sit end enjoy

the museum and the surrounding.

The main intention of the project was to create a journey by using difference in form, inner organization

and the appropriate material make the visitors feel and perceive that museums are not places where they

can only see the past but also reflect upon the future.
