The word community is de-fined as a feeling of fellowshipwith others, as a result of sharingcommon attitudes, interests andgoals.

Each year, Grace Place Pre-school in Tabernacle dedicates a

week to getting its parents andothers in the township involvedin an attempt to teach preschool-ers everyone plays a key role in acommunity.

No matter how big or howsmall, each job has a role andplays an important part in mak-ing the community a better place,preschool director Melinda De-petris said.

Depetris has been the director

of the preschool for almost twoyears now, but Community Work-er Week predates her time.

“The previous director startedCommunity Worker Week tobuild the preschool children’sknowledge of jobs and careers inour community,” she said. “Thechildren and adults enjoy it thor-oughly, and we bring it back year-

ly because of the past success.”The students have been learn-

ing about different jobs in thecommunity and how they eachplay a different role, so they arevery excited about getting thechance to meet the people who fillthese roles.

Seneca student council hosts dinner for charity

When faced with taking on a challengeor taking the easy way out, the SenecaHigh School Student Council embraced thetest.

Each year, the New Jersey Associationof Student Council Executive board choos-es a charity to sponsor. This year, the chari-ty is Hope Loves Company.

“We could have just written a checkfrom our funds to support this year’s chari-ty, but they decided to put a fundraiser to-gether in order to truly understand what

the organization is about and bring thisawareness into the community,” guidancecounselor and head of student councilErica Maira said.

The group decided to put together a din-ner and silent auction at the high school

with an open invitation. The community

service club, led by advisor Lynn Ritter,has taken over the food aspect of the event.The event will take place on Jan. 22 from

6 to 9 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets will besold at the door for $5, and guests will havethe opportunity to buy one ticket to win abasket for $10 or three tickets for $25.

All money raised at the event will be do-nated directly to the HLC charity.

Founded in 2007, HLC became the onlynon-profit in the U.S. dedicated to the chil-dren of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis pa-tients. The mission of the group is to pro-vide emotional and educational support to

children and young adults who have familymembers battling ALS.

The majority of funding for ALS goes toresearch and patient care. While that is im-portant, the children of these patients needto be addressed as well. It is estimated that

85 percent of ALS patients have children,so these children will witness a parentstruggling with terminal illness.

HLC founder Jodi O'Donnell-Ames willbe a guest speaker at the charity dinner.O’Donnell-Ames lost her husband KevinGerard O'Donnell to ALS in 2001.

The school prides itself on rec-ognizing each child as a uniqueindividual created by God.

Community Worker Week ap-plies this practice by showing thekids how each one of these indi-viduals uniquely benefits thecommunity and makes Taberna-cle what it is today.

Tabernacle resident AshtonYates, an art major at HardingUniversity, is among more than1,300 university students includedon the dean's list for gradesachieved during the fall 2015 se-mester.

Styers credited his father, whowas also a music major in college,for his musical talents.

Styers runs the Seneca band ina unique way that not only en-hances students’ musical skillsbut also allows them to grow in

other areas.“Like most sports, we have ourhigh-scoring years and our low-scoring years,” Styers said. “Butfor me, it’s about the journey andwhat the students learn as theygo through the program.”

While the Golden Eaglesmarching band practices andcompetes in a similar fashion tosports teams, Styers attempts toschedule practices and events toallow students to be a part of other clubs. He places a specific

emphasis on getting involvedwith something outside of aca-demics.

“All of my students have a skill,

whether it’s being able to play aninstrument well or being able tosing well. Whatever it is you aregood at, utilize that to the best of your ability,” Styers preaches tohis students.

Being the band director and soheavily involved in music at thehigh school, Styers is in a veryvisible role, and his colleaguesrecognized this when they nomi-nated him for the award.

“It’s all very humbling. I’ve

never looked at myself as ateacher of the year candidate oranything of that nature. That’s

just the way it kind of happened. I just do my job,” Styers said.

He considers the teachers atSeneca to be some of the best ineducation, so to be honoredamong that group has been a spe-cial experience for Styers.

Being selected as teacher of theyear at his high school has cata-pulted Styers as a nominee for adistrict, county or even statewide

award. He will now focus onworking on an application thatwill enable him to be a candidatefor these next levels of awards.

In 2003, O'Donnell-Ames mar-ried Warren Benton Ames and be-came the mother of his two chil-dren, 11-year-old Nora and 8-year-old Adam.

Nora and Adam lost their bio-logical mother Tina to ALS in2000, so they shared that same

feeling of grief due to the loss of a parent to ALS.ALS has united the O'Donnell-

Ames family through hope andlove. They live each day with hopefor tomorrow and want to helpother families who, like them,know ALS all too well.

The 501 (c) 3 non-profit waschosen by the NJASC as its desig-nated charity for this year. The

NJASC is the oldest state studentcouncil association in the UnitedStates, and has inspired the "Spir-it Of New Jersey Youth" since1927. Its members are from highschools and middle schools, pub-lic and private, across the state.

Maira said her student councilgroup would have never knownabout HLC if it wasn’t a part of the NJASC.

The group immediately ralliedaround the idea for the charity

dinner and got down to work, cre-ating flyers and going to localbusinesses in the area before win-ter break to try to assemble thebaskets to auction off at theevent.

They were successful in gath-ering some unique prizes and areconfident guests will enjoy theirwinnings.

“They are quality baskets this

year,” Maira said. “They requirea lot of work to put together, sothe students feel very accom-plished when they get to handthem to the guests on the night of the event.”

The student council also putsthe names of the companies ontheir respective baskets so thewinner knows from whom theirgifts are coming.

“That way it works out for bothsides,” Maira said. “It’s a good

way to advertise for these busi-nesses.”Maira has emphasized a dis-

tinct focus on raising awarenessfor the charity and bringing at-tention to the amount of work itdoes for the community on top of helping the group financially.

“People should know about agreat, hard-working cause likethis,” Maira said.
