Writer: Say yes to Tobacco 21to help protect our youth

According to the American Heart Asso-ciation, smoking is responsible for killingmore than 480,000 Americans annually – including 11,800 New Jerseyans – makingit the No. 1 cause of death. It’s no secretsmoking results in heart disease, stroke, cancers and many other devastating healthissues. Yet smoking remains a crisis in theGarden State, especially when it comes toour youth.

In fact, 95 percent of smokers start thehabit before the age of 21. Each year, 24,500

New Jersey youth try cigarettes for thefirst time while 5,400 children become newregular, daily smokers.

As a pediatrician, I support every effortto deter tobacco getting in the hands of ourkids. I’m advocating for the passage of theTobacco 21 bill (A3254), which would re-duce youth tobacco use in New Jersey byraising the minimum legal sales age of to-bacco products to 21. Modeled after a simi-lar effort in Massachusetts, which saw a 50percent decrease in youth smoking, thisbill would help protect our adolescentsfrom making a decision that would nega-tively affect their health for years to come.

We know that this plan works. It’s seen

success in Needham, Mass., Hawaii andseveral other locations including New YorkCity. We saw success when a similar ap-

proach was taken to address underagedrinking. We raised the minimum pur-chasing age to 21 and saw drops in highwayalcohol-related deaths and high schooldrinking. Although teen drinking wasn’teliminated, the problem substantially im-proved. It’s our hope that we can gain simi-lar success with Tobacco 21.

It’s time for New Jersey to act. With lit-tle/no cost to taxpayers and the improvedwelfare of our children, saying “yes” to To-bacco 21 is the right choice to make.

Tis the season, as they say. ‘Tis

the season to be jolly. ‘Tis the

season to bundle up and drink

hot chocolate. ‘Tis the season to spend

extra time with loved ones. ‘Tis almost

the season to start your holiday shop-

ping – if you haven’t already. And ‘tis

the season to shop local.Next week marks the official start to

the holiday shopping season, but if

you’ve been out and about this month,

    you have noticed holiday decorations

and specials at stores throughout our

    area.

Much of the attention of the holiday

shopping season falls on two days –

Black Friday and, now, Cyber Mon-

day – but don’t forget to shop local for

    your holiday gifts.

    Keeping your spending dollars in

your hometown, or at least in the re-

gion, has immense benefits on the

local economy.Even companies as large as Ameri-

can Express are touting the impor-

tance of shopping local. The company

    started the now well-known Small

    Business Saturday – the Saturday

    after Thanksgiving, the day after

Black Friday – in 2010 to promote

    small businesses. Studies have found

that almost $6 billion is spent at small

businesses on that day each year!

A vibrant and successful local busi-

ness community has a trickle-down ef-

fect on our own pockets. Just think:

    • Successful local businesses make

other businesses want to locate in our

    town.

    • More businesses equals more rata-

bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.

    • The more ratables we have, and the

lower our taxes are, the more attrac-

tive our community becomes to futureresidents.

It all starts with you. If you have a

choice between buying a gift at a big

box store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-

port your neighbors by making that

    purchase locally.

    Our small businesses are already

fighting an uphill battle against the

marketing dollars of the big box

stores. Let’s all help them out by open-

ing their doors and opening our wal-

lets to them. We can make it a truly

    happy holiday season.

    in our opinion

Shop local! This holiday season, support local businesses

youngest in the class.During a conversation with

their neighbor, Emily’s parentsspoke about her interest in thesport and the neighbor was ableto get her in contact with DanRoberts who then invited her totry out for Static Steel Competi-tion Shooting.

It is a style of competitiveshooting that consists of fivestages in which the competitor

shoots five times per stage in anattempt to hit the five targets oneach stage, all while going againstthe clock.

Emily doesn’t let the fact thatthis is not a popular sport in herage group deter her from enjoy-ing it.

“It’s not yet a kids sport be-cause not a lot of kids are doing itand getting involved, but I don’tfeel like I am being put to the side,” Emily said. “All of us are

treated as equal no matter whowe are.”

“We are so proud of Emily andhow she has taken this sport tothe next level. She has learnedwhat true discipline and safety isand at the same time always re-members that school comesfirst,” her mother Lorie said.

Much to her mother’s relief, she also does not let her passionfor the sport deter her from doingwell in the classroom.

Emily is on the honor roll andhad perfect attendance in the2014-2015 school year.

In an incredibly competitivesport, Emily said winning or get-ting a trophy is not what fuelsher; just getting the opportunityto shoot and having a good time iswhat she loves most about the ex-perience.

However, the humble shooterhas only been on the competitiveside of things for three monthsand has already captured a sec-ond-place award in the Women’s

Division of the 2015 New JerseyState National Shooting SportsFoundation Rimfire Challenge.

“Winning second in thewomen’s division was awesome!”Emily said.

She was shocked to hear hername called with the winnersafter witnessing the level of tal-ent she had gone against.

“When Emily took secondplace in the New Jersey StateNSSF Rimfire Challenge,Women’s Division we couldn’thave been more proud. What agreat way to start and prove thatshe has what it takes to shootwith the best,” Cutts said.

This event was Emily’s first-ever statewide competitivematch.

She continues to hone her craftas she typically shoots aboutthree times a month.

Emily plans on staying in-volved with the sport and strivesto one day receive a scholarshipfor her skills and potentially get ashot to go to the Olympics.

Tabernacle Girl Scout Troop21502 spent a day off from schoolvolunteering at the Seamen'sChurch Institute in Newark. They packed more than 400 giftbags the institute will deliver toSeafarers during the holiday sea-son. The gift bags include itemsneeded by the men and womenwho spend up to nine months atsea. The girls packed hand knit-ted hats, scarves, toiletries, andcandy for the Christmas at Seaprogram.

Prior to packing the gift bags, the girls were taken on a tour of the Port of Newark. This sparkedsome interesting discussionamong the seventh-grade girls asthey drove past the ships andcountless containers transport-ing goods to their destinations. They were lucky enough to wit-ness straddle carriers loading

and unloading the enormous con-tainers from the ships. It lookedlike a scene from Star Wars!

The girls enjoyed the day andlook forward to future opportuni-ties to help with Christmas atSea.
