On the Road with the Rabbi
The Israel Film Festival
Encirclements * **
Thursday, November 17, 7:30 pm Teaneck Cinemas, 503 Cedar Lane, Teaneck
I have purchased a block of 15 tickets for us …
first come, first served … $10/ticket Rabbi Ken Stern
Aharon, a 13‐year‐old growing up in a working class Moroccan‐Israeli community, is having a tough me. His father is distant; bullies hound him on the street; and the girl of his dreams barely knows he exists. When he is given the honor of carrying the Torah for Simchat Torah and represen ng all the Bar Mitzvah boys of his neighborhood, his status in the neighborhood is suddenly elevated. He becomes the portal to wishes and longings for the en re community — adults and children alike. As Aharon begins to feel burdened by so many wishes, especially his parents conflic ng wants, the tension leads to unexpected results. More than a coming of age film, it is a story of empowerment and triumph over tragedy.

*On Simchat Torah we carry the Torah around the shul 7 times in a ceremony called Hakafot - or “Encirclements”
**As you may recall, I was hoping that we could all go to see the Natalie Portman movie, based on the life of Israeli novelist, Amos Oz, A Tale of Love and Darkness. Unfortunately, it no longer seems to be playing in our area (or anywhere). This movie, Encirclements, is a great, if less depressing, alternative.

In the Quran, we Jews are referred to as People of the Book. Some of the Jews that Mohammed encountered were, I am sure, literate and well-educated. And I am just as sure that other Jews of that period acquired only a minimal education, or that they may have been illiterate. Nevertheless, even these Jews knew their Scripture - or at least the
Torah - probably by heart, even if they couldn’t read Hebrew. Throughout the ages, our people have prided themselves on acquiring an education. If the older generation was not fortunate enough to be literate or educated, then they made sure that their children were. There were two reasons for this: 1) you couldn’t be a good Jew unless you were educated; and, 2) while other people could persecute, uproot and displace us, they couldn’t take away our education! In medieval times, encompassing the Dark Ages, who was literate in Europe? The monarchs? Not so much. Literacy was the domain of diplomats, the Christian clergy (which is why they exercised such disproportionate influence in the royal courts)…and the Jews! And the Jewish thirst for knowledge was so strong that in a later period, once the idea of admitting Jews had gained some acceptance, quotas were instituted on campuses throughout Europe and the United States. This started not only because of prejudice and anti-Semitism, but because it was obvious that if Jews were to be admitted based solely on merit, we would have overrun every university! I am concerned that in recent years we Jews are losing this edge – our edge. That the thirst for knowledge is slacking, that the desire to excel academically is less and less important. And I see signs of this decline in Jewish education as well. While some point to statistics that show that this generation is among the most highly Jewishly educated in history, it is accompanied by a larger and growing group of Jews who are functionally illiterate. How many People of the Book, can read it in the original Hebrew, let alone understand it? As I’ve been told many times – often not with regret, or as a lament: “I can’t read Hebrew, but I can hum along & clap.” I wish that humming and clapping were enough to sustain Jews or Judaism. What can we do about it? First, we need volunteers who know how to read Hebrew,
and who are willing to teach other, one-on-one. Second, we need people with willing hearts and minds to come forward, and commit to learning to read Hebrew with those who would love to teach you.
Call me. Email me.
I know many Muslim immigrants to the United States who are not well-educated. But all of them know how to read Arabic – even if they cannot understand it – so that they can read the words of their holy Quran. Is it possible that the Muslim world, which has produced a total of 8 Nobel laureates, has a greater thirst for knowledge of their tradition than the Jewish world, which has produced 185? The Hebrew month of Cheshvan coincides completely with the month of November. It contains no celebrations or observances. And that is why Cheshvan is designated as Jewish Book Month. Isn’t this the perfect time to do something about your Hebrew/Jewish literacy?

THANKSGIVING IS EVERY DAY
NOTES FROM THE CANTOR CANTOR PAUL ZIM
paragraph that must be repeated. It is meant to teach us, to always remember to say “thank you” for every blessing and gift that God provides for us. I am reminded of the “Hallel” that we recited during the Sukkot and Simchat Torah celebrations. There is a phrase that is so appropriate. “Hodu Lodonai Ki Tov – Ki L’olam Chasdo – Give thanks to God, for God is good. God’s loving kindness endures forever.”
A NOTE OF “THANKS” FROM THE CANTOR
One of the hallmarks of our synagogue has been our warm participatory form of worship. Singing has made our worshipping a more meaningful service for everyone. So many prayers from the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur liturgy are solemn and soul-stirring. They are recited and sung (chanted) with the utmost reverence. To add beauty to our services, I have always enjoyed training some of our own to sing solos or to sing along with our congregation. These added voices were outstanding! Their participation has raised our prayers to divine heights.
The Yom Tov Singers (In Alphabetical Order)
Ashley Alenick, Paige Alenick, Suzanne Alenick, Alana Davis, Alexa Danoff, Casey Danoff,
Dr. Madelyn Danoff, Andrea Elrom, Darielle Insler, Jamie Obstbaum Leonhart, Rabbi Jay Levy, Martha Shemin, Miranda Stern, Raina Stern,
Stephanie Stern-Protz and Dr. Avi Yacobi.
A special Yasher Koach to Rabbi Ken Stern for his guidance, inspiration and musical talent.
Together, we continue to build a strong and vibrant Shul.
The last Thursday of this month (November 24th) conjures up a familiar day for so many Americans: spending time with our friends and loved ones, watching a football game or two, turkey, etc. . . . This is the stuff that Thanksgiving is made of. It
is a timeless ritual celebrated in the U.S. by all faiths and cultures, a civic holiday that is not connected to any one religion. We give thanks and gratitude for the land that we live in. After all, giving thanks is the most basic form of gratitude. Thanksgiving does have its roots in our holiday of Sukkot. On Sukkot, we celebrate the harvest. It’s a time when we decorate our Sukkah with seasonal fruits and vegetables surrounded by branches and greenery. We also offer our thanksgiving prayers to God for the bounty of food and our gifts of plenty. It has been said that the Pilgrims who landed in Plymouth Rock searched the Bible for a holiday of gratitude, and came across Sukkot. I have always found that Thanksgiving is a special time for inter faith services and a time when our Jewish and American cultures find common ground in giving thanks to God. My earliest memory of Thanksgiving was sitting around the table with my family and expressing our heartfelt and humble thanks to God, for providing an escape from the horror of destruction of Polish Jewry at the very last moment. It happened in July of 1938, not long before the war started, through circumstances that turned out to be truly miraculous for them. They were able to find passage on one of the last ships that left Poland for Canada, before the outbreak of the war . I have every reason to offer thanks, for without my family’s miracle, I wouldn’t be here. We offer thanks in the most sacred tradition of our people, by quoting the prayer of thanksgiving that we find in the Amidah that we recite three times a day. We are directed each day to say the Modim prayer (giving thanks) during the repetition of the silent devotion out loud. While we respond “Amen” to all other blessings of the Amidah, when it comes to this important t’filah of giving thanks, there is an entire

HEBREW SCHOOL NEWS MYRA LONDON & ZEEVA SKLAR CO-DIRECTORS
Every month in our Hebrew School, we focus on learning about mitzvot, and how we as children and adults can make a difference in the world. We have partnered with Chai Mitzvah, a program that was created to engage families to take some time to reflect on where they are Jewishly and how to engage in social action. Our topic this month is “Gratitude.” Here are some ideas from the Chai Mitzvah curriculum. Psychological studies have shown that feeling and expressing gratitude are important components of a happy, balanced life. There are elements in Jewish tradition that can help us to be aware of our blessings and to express gratitude. Expressing gratitude does not mean ignoring that there is pain and hardship in the world. It means making a daily effort to see that along with the difficulty, there is also good in life that is worth celebrating. Several quotes can help us to highlight the importance of gratitude in our lives. “To spend our lives enthusiastically acclaiming the wonders of the world is unnatural. Yet if we never acknowledge the good things that are ours, we are ungrateful, and we can become deadened to an awareness of life’s precious gifts. Reciting a brachah helps to restore the balance.”
From Pray Tell, Rabbi Jules Harlow, pp. 4-5
“Gratitude rejoices with her sister joy, and is always ready to light a candle and have a party. Gratitude doesn’t much like the old cronies of boredom, despair, and taking life for granted.”
Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, Chassidic Teacher “Who is rich? He who is happy in what he has, as it is said, ‘When you eat the labor of your hands, happy you will be, and it will go well with you.”
Psalms 128:2 This month, in addition to our annual participation in The Jewish Federations’ Mitzvah Day on November 6, we will create “Every Day of Gratitude” posters, and play a game called “The Wheel of Thanks,” among other things. Why not take part in an act of gratitude this month? Homeless animals will be grateful for a donation of towels or blankets to an animal shelter. A Package from Home is an organization that sends care packages to Israeli soldiers. These care packages are not only a warm reminder of love and esteem, but are also items they truly need. OUR BAR MITZVAH
Noah Burton is currently an 8th grade student at the Lewis F. Cole Middle School here in Fort Lee, NJ. Currently enrolled in 8th grade honors Algebra and honors Language Arts classes, Noah is a dedicated student and attained High Honor roll for all four marking periods of 7th grade. In addition to being an excellent student, Noah enjoys working out in the gym, listening to music, and socializing with his friends.
Noah’s Bar Mitzvah coincides with the Torah portion recounting Noah and the Flood. This is especially significant as Noah cares very deeply about the environment and ways to protect the Earth. The Mitzvah project Noah has chosen to do will center on donating a portion of his Bar Mitzvah gifts to a charitable organization which focuses on progressing positive environmental change.
GRATITUDE: MODIM ANACHNU LACH
