Hello, my name is Ralena Stanton,
and I graduated from UT Arlington
in 1998. I was hired for my first
teaching position as an 8th grade
math teacher the summer of 1998
at Euless Jr. High. I was at Euless
for 18 years before I transferred to
Harwood Jr. High where I plan on
continuing to work hard for the
success of my students. My son is
15 years old and is currently a freshman at Euless Jr.
High where his other parent is principal. I enjoy
baking, going to see movies and spending time at
home with family. We have two dogs, Razor and
Snickerdoodle, and are currently building a home in
Euless. The Stanton family is excited about
continuing our involvement with the students of the
HEB school district. Thanks to the Harwood staff for
being supportive and welcoming me to this school.
I am looking forward to a great year!
Lauren has become such a leader in Symphonic Band this year! There isn’t a day that
goes by where I don’t see her in her seat before class working on her music. She
constantly helps 8th graders in the clarinet section to make sure all parts are covered.
She is also President of Student Council, leading by example with a positive attitude.
Each day she strives to be the best she can be. Lauren is an outstanding leader at
school and in our community.
Zion is an outstanding tuba player in the Symphonic Band here at Harwood. His sound
is so big you can definitely tell when his presence is missing! He is always willing to help
his fellow bandmates. The type of leadership Zion brings is paramount for the
continuity of the band. He is a multi-sport athlete who works hard and does not
sacrifice academics or band due to his busy schedule. His positive attitude brightens the
day of those around him!
Yasmin is a section leader if I have ever seen one. She makes sure her section is
prepared for the day musically and logistically. One of her strengths is always being
willing to lend a helping hand without being asked to do so. She has taken it upon
herself to ensure the success of her section by helping those in need. I could not
have asked for a better section leader!
Taylor is an all-around awesome student! He sets the bar high by developing some of
the most unique ideas, then executing them with his own level of perfection. He has
one of the best work ethics I have witnessed in the school, and he is a leader in
behavior, skills and excitement for learning in Art.
Ellie is a ray of sunshine. She has natural curiosity and willingness to
learn that is infectious to everyone around her. Ellie’s great common
sense and intuition make her a joy to teach.
Alex is a great, mature presence in the Blackhawk Boys Choir.
He is very musically intelligent and is a great leader for his
peers. His voice is awesome and clear, but his leadership is
what sets him apart!
HARWOOD JUNIOR HIGH Distinction designations are awarded to campuses based on achievement in
performance indicators relative to a group of 40 campuses of similar type, size and student demographics. Depending on campus grade levels and type, the
number of potential distinction designations can vary. Harwood Junior High has received 7 out of 7 distinctions.
Commissioner of Education Mike Morath stated, “Earning all possible distinctions is a significant accomplishment and should signal to parents that
there is extraordinary work taking place on that campus.”
Dr. Toby Givens, Principal of Harwood, stated, "We are extremely proud to have a clean sweep of 7 out of 7 distinctions. This accomplishment speaks
directly to the focused, consistent, high-quality work of our students and teachers.”

Harwood & Central Junior Highs’
cheerleading teams combined their
spirit at the Harwood vs. Central
football game to get the word out
that October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. It’s time to think
pink! Many of us have been affected
by the fight and/or loss of someone
close to us due to this disease.
In an effort to celebrate cancer
fighters and survivors, remember
those we've lost and increase
awareness of this disease, both
schools will be cheering with pink
poms and sporting their pink!

Sarah is a freshman who started learning French
when she came to Harwood in 7th grade. She is very
enthusiastic about learning and always strives to
improve her French. She was in the office after school
when she heard a French-speaking student struggling
to talk to someone. Sarah was able to successfully
interpret for the new student. It is so great to see our
students use what they have learned in school to
help others!

Harwood 8th grader Ali Grady participated in Education in Action's summer
2016 Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. Ali was selected for the Lone Star
Leadership Academy camp based on her academic success and leadership
ability, educator recommendation and involvement in school/community
activities.
During the weeklong, overnight camp, Ali developed leadership skills while
learning about the great state of Texas. She and other participants
experienced what they are learning in school through visits to notable and
historically significant Texas sites.
The Lone Star Leadership Academy experience provides a unique opportunity
for students to learn about Texas leaders and what it means to be from the
Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem
solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice
presentation skills in Leadership Groups. In addition, participants have fun
meeting other students and making new friends while adding to their resume
of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home a
wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.
Congratulations to Ali for her outstanding leadership and academic
success. You are truly a role model worth celebrating! -submitted by: Cynthia Morgan, Assistant Principal, Harwood JH

The Harwood PTA would like to thank you for your support in making the Yankee Candle Fundraiser successful! We’d also like to thank our Harwood teachers, staff and our 8th grade office aides for assisting us in this endeavor. If you still have not turned in an order form or have an outstanding amount to be paid, please turn it in to the office as soon as possible. Deborah Gonzalez will be announcing prizes and delivery dates soon.
Thank you to all of our parents who helped make our Pink Out Barbecue a success this past Wednesday! A special thank you to Marsha Greeley for organizing this event and to Chrystal Riddell for bringing in all that chicken! Teachers and staff really enjoyed your home cooking! Our next luncheon will be in December.
We are looking for volunteers to join our Executive Board to fill the open Treasurer and Clothes Closet chair positons. We are also extending an invitation to interested parents who may be thinking about joining our board next year to attend an Executive Board meeting to see what we are all about. Please contact Karin Bunton if you have any questions or would like to know more about these open positions on our Board.
The National PTA’s Reflections program has begun using the theme “What is Your Story?” Students in Pre-K through 12th grade may create and submit works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and/or visual arts. One member from a participant’s family must be a PTA member in order to enter the contest. We hope to have many entries from Harwood; please contact Chris Willsey if you need more information. Forms can be found in the office, library or on the Harwood website under Documents → PTA. Entries are due Friday, November 4th.
If you would like to join Harwood’s PTA, volunteer or be added to the Hospitality committee, you can find forms in the front office or on Harwood’s webpage under Documents → PTA. To stay up to date, please ‘Like’ the Harwood Junior High PTA Facebook page. Thank you for your support!

Parents,
We want to remind you of our district and campus cell phone policy:
Your students may use their cell phones under the direction and
supervision of the classroom teacher for instructional purposes.
This is not only allowed but encouraged. However, cell phones may

cell phone is not under the direction of a teacher, school personnel
will confiscate the phone and turn it in to the office. Parents must
pick the cell phone up on the first incident. The second incident and
on, parents must retrieve the item and will be charged a fine of
$15.00 each time.
We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
