Midterm AssignmentWhile deciding what song verse I was going to use for the project I quickly

realized I wanted the song to have meaning. I wanted it to be deeper than a song about love or family. I wanted to use an older artist that I knew could tell a good story. After much thought and consideration I settled on the band Simon and Garfunkel. I enjoy their music, and they epitomize musical storytellers. I then searched through their songs and “The Boxer” stood out to me immediately. It was a song that I was familiar with, it wasn’t their most popular piece of music, and it told a great story that I would be able to interpret. The song is about a man who left his home early in life and has been fighting to find what he lost ever since. I interpreted the song using “The Matrix” aesthetic because like “The Boxer”, the characters in “The Matrix” are fighting for a world they lost. To give my photos the aesthetic turquoise look of “The Matrix” I decreased the temperature in the photos. I also used a variety of shots that could have been used in “The Matrix”.

My photo story begins with a man in a dark coat with white shorts. This is shown to specifically so the viewer cannot tell if he is good or evil. The man on the ground is dressed in a dark blue, another neutral color, he could be considered good or evil. The man in the dark coat stand in front of a building he needs to pass through. While inside he comes across another man in all white, this new man is clearly good. He has come to stop the man in the black coat from making the wrong choices. They battle once the man in the black coat disagrees. The final shot shows the man in white holding the black coat. It’s meaning is up to the interpretation of the viewer.

I used a high angle shot first to convey that the man in the black coat was not as powerful as he may seem. I next used a long shot to convey his unwillingness to go inside a place that looks dark and unwelcoming. The next shot was a close up of the back of the man in the black coat. In the distance is the man in white. His face is shown, but unclear because the man in the black coat is unsure of him. Next is a low shot where I laid down underneath the two characters to show their power and struggle against one another. Finally a long, low shot of the man in white succeeding in his task, he looks content.

The Boxer-Simon and Garfunkel

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains
