Like so many other communities across the country, the eyes of Pickaway County are on the high school football field during the fall season. As the Friday night lights turn on, families gather and towns join in cheering on their team. Unique to our community is an active, collec-tive spirit that makes the Tackling Cancer Football Game such a success - with more than $100,000 raised in three years. Started in 2009 by athletic trainers at area high schools, the fundraising football game brings together local rivals for a common cause. While both teams scrap their school colors in favor of pink for the showdown, the event raises funds not only for cancer patients and research, but all types of cancer by way of the Berger Health Foundation and the Urban & Shelley Meyer Fund at The James. The 2013 event will be the fourth annual game and will feature the Logan Elm Braves playing host to the Westfall Mustangs on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

Nicole started with the health system in 2011. Nicole was nominated by Brenda Strittmatter, Chief Patient Services Officer, who said “Nicole is a dedicated Berger team member. She role models the Berger Way in every situation and is well liked by her peers and respected by physicians. She is highly deserving of employee of the quarter.” Nicole helped to formulate the Enhanced Berger Way document and participated in the Berger Way Grass Roots Campaign. Nicole also recently participated in a multidisciplinary team related to ED patient flow and was instrumental in developing four goals during the process which will improve patient experience and staff/physician satisfaction. Nicole also chairs the Med/Surg Patient Experience Team.

Pam started with the health system in 2011. Pam was nomi-nated by her manager, Charles Barclay, who said “Pam provides the highest quality service possible and then some. No task for her is too small or too big and she is never too busy to help. From helping a guest with a tray, running the cash register, working the starter position on the tray line, checking the tray line to doing dishes and making salads, Pam is an all around person who is not afraid of any task. Pam shows an everyday dedication to Berger and the department and is always truly thinking about the best interest of the people we serve. I have never seen Pam have a “bad day”, always smiling and always has a positive attitude. I asked her one day, why so happy? Her response was, I have a great job working for an excellent employer and I truly enjoy the people I work with, what else can you ask for?”

Berger hosts Volunteer Luncheon to thank, honor more than 250 dedicated individuals

Berger honored our volunteers on Thursday, April 25 at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held at Emmett Chapel Church. The event was held in conjunction with National Volunteer Week – April 21-27. Berger acknowledged five specialized volunteer groups consisting of approximately 250 volunteers that donate nearly 20,000 hours annually to patients, staff and our community. Don McIlroy, mayor of Circleville, presented a proclamation to the volunteers honoring National Volunteer Week as an officially recognized event in the City of Circleville. Volunteers received yearly service awards for their individual accomplishments including Peg Scherer who has contributed 45 years of volunteer service as a Berger Hospital Gift Shop volunteer. Berger’s Leadership team members acted as servers throughout the luncheon as the Teays Valley Symphonic Choir provided entertainment. Berger volunteers consist of the following groups: Circle of Caring Volunteers provide assistance to the frail, elderly and disabled individuals in our community in an effort to help them maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life in their own homes. Typically, volunteers assist with transportation, yard work, handyman chores, light housekeep-ing, friendly visiting and phoning, respite care, and ramp building. Berger Gift Shop Volunteers staff and manage the Gift Shop at Berger Hospital. Pro-ceeds from the Gift Shop are used to purchase patient care equipment at Berger Hospital. In addition, the Gift Shop offers scholarships to local students entering a healthcare field. Berger Hospital Volunteers donate over 12,000 hours annually at Berger Hos-pital. Their many volunteer activities include staffing the hospital information desk, trans-porting patients within the hospital, deliver-ing flowers and newspapers to patients, and providing needed assistance to the various

departments within the hospital. Hospice of Pickaway County Volunteers are caring individuals who provide support and assistance to terminally ill patients while also addressing the needs and concerns of the patient’s family. Hospice of Pickaway County is the only not-for-profit hospice care in Circlev-ille, providing care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. Friends of Berger Volunteers are an active fundraising group with a primary

mission to raise funds to support continuing education for Berger Hospital employees. This group’s major fundraiser is the Annual Holiday Food Sale held at the hospital. If you or someone you know would like the opportunity to help others while giv-ing back to the community, please consider volunteering. For more information, contact Kara Maddux, Director of Volunteers, at 740.420.8353 or by email at [email protected].

Construction Update: Emergency Department, Registration, Bradley Cancer Center & More Thank you to all our Berger team mem-bers for your continued support and assis-tance throughout Berger’s ongoing renova-tion projects as we continue our commitment to providing the highest-quality health care services to our community. Here’s a quick update on the latest projects: Emergency Department/Registration Three of four phases are now complete in the Emergency Department and Registration area. Phase Three, which covers the Emer-gency Department registration area, was completed on April 17th creating separate areas for outpatient and emergency registra-tion. Phase Four began on April 22nd and focuses on the new lab draw area and EKG room. Phase Four will take approximately four weeks with the projected completion date of May 20th. Bradley Cancer CenterThe estimated nine-week Bradley Cancer Center project began two weeks ago with the stripping of wall paper and the removal of the desk/wall cabinets in the Noecker Building. The Facilities Department is working closely with the Cancer Center and Maternity Department to phase in the new flooring and ceiling in an effort to create the least pos-sible disruption to traffic flow in those areas.

Private Room Mock-UpThe private room mock-up project began two weeks ago in Room 207 with the restroom and wall renovations. After completion, this room will serve as a demo to assess how pri-vate patient rooms on the Medical/Surgical Unit would look and function. The long lead time on the new head walls and fixture may extend this project out eight to 10 weeks.

Med/Surg. Unit Restroom FlooringThe Facilities Department is in process of re-placing restroom flooring in all patient rooms on the Medical/Surgical Unit. The project will begin as soon as the materials are delivered and the length of the project will depend the availability of patient rooms. The Facilities Department will be working with the Medi-cal/Surgical Unit team to create the least possible disruption to patient experience.

On Saturday, May 11, Rob is hosting the third annual 50s FYM with over 150 ultrarunning enthusiasts geared up to run circles around Hargus Lake. Then, on Sunday, May 12 – Mother’s Day – Rob is encouraging adults, children and families of all pace levels to come out and par-ticipate in Hargus High Fives, a 5k & 5 Mile Trail Run/Walk with a 1k Kid’s Fun Run. 50s FYM is a 25k, 50k and 50 Mile trail race. The event benefits A.W. Marion State Park in an effort to build bridges and perform additional trail maintenance. The most recent include the repairs of three of the bridges along the perimeter trail at Hargus using funds from 50s FYM. 50s FYM is nearly sold out for the third year in a row. Each year many families and friends come out to support their runners. Tents and chairs are set up at the start/finish area and there

is a wonderful feeling of camaraderie and community support at the event. If you’re not running yourself, feel free to stop by and cheer on the runners! Carroll is truly grateful for Berger’s continued support of the event from the beginning. Thanks to Berger and all of the supporters, Rob and his crew have been able to provide a low cost, close-to-home event which has raised much needed funds to help maintain our beautiful trails at Hargus Lake.
