Durham is fresh off a 4-2 road trip, that saw the club take 2-of-3 from both Indianapolis and Louisville. At 11-6, the Bulls begin tonight a half game back of Gwinnett in the South Division standings. The Chiefs, meanwhile, just finished a perfect 5-0 homestand that included sweeps of both Toledo (two games due to a rainout) and Norfolk. Winners of six-straight, Syracuse has made up for their rough 2-7 start and now stand at 8-7, good enough to tie for second place in the North Division. SUNDAY NIGHT The Durham Bulls and Louisville Bats battled into the 13th inning Sunday afternoon, with both teams struggling to snap a 3-3 tie. Ultimately it was the Bulls who stumbled when they ran out of pitchers and were forced to put catcher Mike McKenry on the mound, eventually resulting in a two-out, bases loaded wild pitch that brought in the game-ending run in Durham’s 4-3 loss. Patrick Leonard, Mike Marjama, Granden Goetzman, and Cade Gotta all turned in two-hit games to lead the Bulls’ bats, while Jeff Ames tossed three perfect innings in his last-second spot start for the recently promoted Chih-Wei Hu. POSITION PLAYER ON THE MOUND Catcher Mike Marjama’s emergency pitching performance for the Bulls on Sunday marked the first time a position player took the mound for Durham since fellow catcher Mayo Acosta tossed a perfect 10th inning to earn the win vs. Gwinnett on 6/4/16. That was actually Acosta’s second pitching performance and second win of the year, as he also picked up the victory with a perfect 13th frame against Norfolk on 5/8/16. WERE GOING STREAKING! Mike Marjama kept his perfect start to the 2017 seeason intact on Sunday as his 2-6 performance extended his team-leading hit streak to 11 consecutive games, which also happens to be every game the catcher has appeared in this year. The 27-year- old’s impressive season-openening streak is currently the second longest ongoing hit streak in the International League, and the third longest overall in the league this year. MULTIPLE MULTI-HIT GAMES Patrick Leonard collected his seventh multi-hit game of the season Sunday afternoon, as the third baseman went 2-6 with an RBI. Leonard’s seven performances with at least two hits is the most on the Bulls this year, with no other teammate accomplishing the feat more than four times. BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 KING OF THE NORTH The Bulls face some stiff competition during this homestand, with two of the top teams in the North Division in Syracuse and Buffalo visiting the DBAP. Buffalo currently leads the way with an 11-4 record, while Syracuse is tied with Rochester for second place with an 8-7 mark. These series mark the only times this year that both teams come to Durham. ONE & DONE This series marks the only time this season that the Syracuse Chiefs visit the Bull City, as the two teams will only play each other six total times. The Bulls with visit Syracuse for the other three-game set 8/15 - 8/17. HOME RUN DROUGHT Durham returns home ranking third in the IL with 17 home runs on the season, but that number has remained stagnent for the past three days as the Bulls have gone homerless over that stretch. The three game home run droubt is the longest of the season for the Bulls, who had previously gone deep in 13 of their first 14 games of the year. EXTRA, EXTRA INNINGS Sunday’s 13 inning affair tied for the longest game this season for the Bulls, who also played a 13 inning contest in Gwinnett on 4/7. Durham has already played in three games that required extra frames this year, going 2-1 in such contests. The Bulls will have to pick up the pace however if they want to catch last year’s squad, who played in a league-leading 23 extra-innings games. 5 for 5 The promotion of RHP Brent Honeywell to Durham last week meant that all of the Top 5 prospects in the Tampa Bay Rays system reside with the Bulls, with all five also ranking among the Top 100 prospects in baseball. That list includes including SS Willy Adames (No. 1/MiLB No. 19), Honeywell (#2/#28), RHP Jose De Leon (DL, #3/#30), OF Jake Bauers (#4/71), and 1B Casey Gillaspie (#5/#99). THE CHIEF CHIEFS The Syracuse Chiefs’ roster currently has five of the Top 30 prospects in the Washington Nationals system, including three of the Nats’ Top 10 players. RHP Austin Voth heads the list at No. 8, followed by RHP A.J. Cole (#9), C Pedro Severino (No. 10), OF Rafael Bautista (#13), and OF Brian Goodwin (#26). None of five players appear in the Top 100 list for all of Minor League Baseball. The Nationals have only two players on that prestigious ranking, with both OF Victor Robles (#5) and RHP Erick Fedde (#55) playing lower in the Washington system. 2017 BULLS VS.
