DESCRIPTION

ORCHARD The aim of our Orchard is to pleasurably engage and educate young children in growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing delicious and healthy fresh produce. It is based on the belief that these skills and understandings are essential to the development of life-long enjoyment of growing their own produce. We will be able to provide children from Foundation Year to Grade 6 with access to an extensive vegetable garden and orchards which they have helped design, build and maintain on the school grounds. They will spend time learning about plants, seed saving, water management, compost and soil health and they will also learn about the seasons, plant varieties, stages of growth and the connection between care in the garden and how it can be eaten fresh or used for cooking. We have a purpose-built kitchen for preparing and sharing a variety of foods created from their produce. As well, the Orchard would support our Breakfast program where we serve fruit, cereal and toasted sandwiches which we currently purchase. We are hoping that in future years we will be able to provide the fruit from our Orchard not only for Breakfast Club but other school events. We are also keen to start a café where we serve a variety of food, jams or condiments made by the children ie ‘Devonshire Tea’ and to serve our own produce at the Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea and similar school events.

SCHOOL INTRODUCTIONVision The core belief and central purpose at Yarra Glen is to have students leave the school with the skills and attitudes that will enable them to continue to learn as they move into further education and the wider community as adults. Values Yarra Glen Primary School aims to provide a positive culture for learning and human development throughout the school community. Using Values Education, we strive to develop a positive environment that promotes human growth and learning. We build connectedness through the development of Community Agreements among the students, adults with whom we work.

By implementing these values people learn to use specific collaborative skills, and to reflect both on the interaction and the learning that has taken place. This process establishes a caring environment for co-operative learning, and provides structure for positive interaction and continuity for working groups, in the classroom, administration and the parent community.

Context Yarra Glen Primary School is located in the township of Yarra Glen in the picturesque Yarra Valley on the outer eastern fringe of the metropolitan area some 50 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. The school is well situated on 3.2 hectares, with grounds which include a large oval, junior and senior playgrounds, grass and asphalt playing areas, basketball and tennis courts as well as attractive gardens, established trees and the following garden works in progress ; Sensory Garden, Dry River Bed and Orchard .

ORCHARD LOCATION

The above photos give the general layout of our vegie garden/orchard at our school. We have since been working on transplanting some fruit trees from other beds into the fenced off  garden. It is a better location for growing and will hopefully keep some fauna away from crops.

Proposed Area Mini-Orchard

Pot dimensions 560 x 560 x 400mm

This is where and how we would like to plant the Miniature Fruiting Trees.

The Upper banks have the relocated trees in them.  We have kept some spare plots for propagating and growing seedlings.

We are also very fortunate in having a hands on School Council President, parent volunteers and a maintenance man/gardener who volunteers his time each week to take groups of children to work in the garden.

In SummaryOur aim is to provide an Orchard which supports and educates our students in sustainability and the benefits of growing their own produce.

As with most schools our budget for these types of projects is limited and we would appreciate any assistance with funds to help with completion of our School Orchard.
