SymmetryPart I: Notes

Symmetrical: A figure is symmetrical if it can be into 2 parts that are a reflection of each other.

The line of symmetry is the reflection line of a symmetrical shape.

In other words, a line of symmetry is the line that separates these two parts.

Here are some examples of symmetrical and non-symmetrical shapes. Draw a line of symmetry for each symmetrical shape

Part II: Hands On Practice

You will now get the chance to practice seeing if shapes are symmetrical or not. You will be given different shapes on pieces of paper. Try to find a line of symmetry by folding the shape against itself in various ways. If the two halves of the shape line up, then it is symmetrical. If you can’t find anyway to make the halves of the shape line up, then it isn’t symmetrical.

Below you have a mini-diagram of each shape you will get to practice with. Next to each shape circle YES if the shape was symmetrical or NO if the shape was non-symmetrical.

Symmetrical? Yes or No?1. YES NO 2. YES NO

3. YES NO 4. YES NO.

5 YES NO. 6. YES NO.

7. YES NO 8. YES NO.

9. YES NO 10. YES NO.

Part 3: Problem Practice

1. What shape is symmetrical?

2. How many lines of symmetry does this figure have?a. 1b. 2c. 3d. 4

3. In what drawing is the line of symmetry placed accurately?

4. What shape has only one line of symmetry?

Extra Credit: Draw a shape with exactly 4 lines of symmetry.
