ParticipationAt the beginning of each Quarter, students will be given a 100% for class participation. The participation grade will remain at 100% if you follow class expectations and procedures, and have your book, assignments, notebook, supplies and calculator with you everyday. Percentage points will be subtracted from the student’s participation total if they are missing any of their supplies, don’t complete the class work, or fail to actively participate in daily lessons.

Homework1

Page 2: Syllabus Template 2015-16

In order to be successful in this course, the student must attempt ALL assigned homework problems. Homework will be assigned daily. Homework is graded every day. Warm Up problems may be assigned daily during the first five minutes of the class period. They are graded each day and tracked. Students are allowed to miss two Warm Ups each quarter without penalty.

Students will receive full credit only if they have attempted / finished all problems, shown work, neatly written the solutions, and properly labeled the homework. A list of “answers” will not be sufficient. Though it is important not to miss class, if a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to secure missing assignments and notes. Use PlusPortal and classmates as sources for this information. If the review day prior to a test is missed, the student must still be prepared to take the test with his/her class. Assignments missed due to absence will be accepted as long as they are made up within the allowable days based on the number of days the student was absent. Homework is worth 10 points if accepted the first day, 5 points the second day and zero after the second day.

Students are encouraged to ask questions regarding what is expected of them on assignments, or if they are having problems completing any assignment. Students should not wait until the last minute to decide that they do not understand something!! START ON ASSIGNMENTS WHEN THEY ARE ASSIGNED NOT WHEN THEY ARE DUE!! Late homework normally will not be accepted for credit. Both homework assignment grades and test/quiz grades will be posted online for reference. We will start every lesson with a Q & A session about the homework, then new material will be discussed and finally homework will be assigned.

All classwork, homework, tests and quizzes must be done in pencil. Pens are only allowed for checking assignments. All work to be turned in must be NEAT, ORGANIZED, and UNDERSTANDABLE otherwise, assignments that cannot be read will EARN NO CREDIT.

Quizzes: Quizzes are given at the discretion of the teacher and there is no set schedule for when they will be administered.

Tests:Tests will be given at the end of every chapter. Before each test, students will be given a day of review activities and may be given a practice test as well.

Extra Credit:Extra credit comes in the form of challenge/bonus problems. Extra credit is not provided in order for students who have not been completing and participating during the chapter to bring their grade up to passing.

Make Up WorkMissing class surely puts the student at a disadvantage. In the event the student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain and complete any missed assignments. Missed test or quizzes are made up at the discretion of the teacher. Homework is always posted on PlusPortal. Classwork can be secured from a classmate.

Outside the Class/Teacher Assistance:Students are encouraged to come for tutoring on Thursdays right after school until 3:45PM. Students should come for tutoring as soon as they feel they have fallen behind. Don’t wait until the test day to seek teacher assistance. Fellow classmates can be a tremendous help. Learn early the advantage of study groups!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions at any time. It is understood that students are coming for help, not to be criticized for what they don’t know.

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Respect Yourself, Others and Property

Be prepared to begin class on time and have all the required materials when entering the room. Students will not be permitted to go to their locker during class.

Pay careful attention during class … no side conversations permitted. Sharing appropriate questions and/or thoughts on class material with the entire class is encouraged.

Interrupting the teacher while talking is not permitted at any time. Be patient and wait to ask questions or make appropriate comments.

Sharpen pencils before the bell rings….not after class begins….it is disruptive. Students are expected to greet all adults when they pass them on the campus….not just the

ones who teach them!! Defacing school or classroom property will earn the student a disciplinary action and will cause

the student to have to pay for the damage.

Attendance and TardinessAttendance is mandatory. Please refer to the Attendance Section of the current edition of the Student Handbook for more details. For details on consequences for tardiness, please refer to the most current edition of the Student Handbook. For this class, a tardy will be issued if you are NOT in the classroom when the tardy bell rings.

Behavior ManagementThe behavior expectations are very simple for this class. There will be one verbal warning given for a behavior that violates the respect policy. Consequences for disrupting student learning or the ability of the teacher to teach will earn a detention or referral depending on severity.

Behaviors that earn detention include but are not limited to the items listed in the current edition of the Student Handbook under Policy and Behavior Violations as well as an automatic detention for disrupting the ability of other students to learn or of the teacher to teach. Detentions are held after school as noted in the Student Handbook. If issued a detention, it must be served according to the current policy in the Student Handbook. If the student fails to serve his/her detention for any reason, it will automatically become a Referral and the student will be required to see the Dean of Students. Certain behaviors will warrant an automatic referral to the Dean of Students. These behaviors include but are not limited to the items listed in the current edition of the Student Handbook under Major Violations. Bullying of any type will not be tolerated. For a definition and explanation of what constitutes bullying, refer to the detailed explanation in the current edition of the Student Handbook.

Bits & Pieces of Information for Students It is important not to fall behind because learning and understanding one concept provides a

foundation for the next one. A student should not wait until he/she is several concepts behind before seeking help.

When sending questions/comments via email, always include your name in the subject line for a quicker response.

Two uniform infraction warnings will be issued. On the third warning, the student will be issued a detention.

Cell phone usage is strictly forbidden during the school day. If a cell phone is used, it will be collected and given to the Dean of Students.

There are adequate opportunities to use the restrooms throughout the school day: before classes begin, break time, lunch time, after school and when in certain campus buildings for classes such as the Media Center or locker rooms. A maximum of three restroom visits of five minutes each will be permitted each quarter. If violated, no more passes from my class will be allowed. You must sign out and in each time you go to the restroom.
