SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

THERE IS A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING

Continuing to recall the first visit to Sydenhams League Grounds in some thirty years of watching non-league football with a look, in alphabetical order, at the coming season’s First Division commencing with ALTON. I have a soft spot for the Town, having worked there for twenty years, and go back initially to April 1994 when I saw Bass Alton beat Overton by four goals in a Hampshire League Division One fixture. Four years later, the same venue and the renamed Alton Town defeated Brading five two in the same competition. Fast forward a long way to December 2015 and Anstey with Alton progressing in the League Cup at Fareham’s expense to the tune of four goals to two. I also have to admit to seeing Alton play at Anstey Park more years ago than I care to remember when they were one of the top sides in the County. ANDOVER NEW STREET and the first in what is now well over one hundred visits was the opening game (I think) of the 1998/99 season and a win by the odd goal in three over Liss Athletic in Hampshire Premier League Division One. The Club is up with Amesbury in terms of the welcome and hospitality and the only thing I cannot remember is how on earth I found the Ground, having only been back in the area a couple of months. I dread to think the first time I saw ANDOVER but it was probably in the Western League at the Walled Meadow when I was at school but for the purposes of these memories my records start with a pre-season Friendly against Farnborough, also at the Walled Meadow in August 1987. The first fixture witnessed at the Portway was two years later - a one all draw with Bury Town in the Southern League, with regard to the present Andover Town one has to come a lot nearer to the present day and a four nil victory over Team Solent in December 2013. Incredibly I have now been to the Portway on more than 400 occasions and despite commencing with a goalless draw the average goals per game over that period is in excess of four. Many happy times and hopefully, and I am afraid it is hopefully, the Club will one day return to its former status. The next port of call is only a dozen miles or so from Andover – BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS in Salisbury. Andover were the visitors on my first visit to Western Way, winning three one in a Wessex League fixture and my main problem there over the years has been deciding which of the many doors in the Clubhouse leads upstairs! I am still far from certain. Remaining in Wiltshire and a few miles down the A338 from Bemerton is DOWNTON and, as with Andover, my first visit was for a pre-season friendly when a Southampton XI visited Wick Lane in 1990. Saints won three nil and memory suggests that they included a couple of Russian players on trial and one can recall thinking, rightly or wrongly, how different the pleasant environs of Wiltshire must have been from their homeland. Research suggests the two players were Aleksei Cherednik and Sergei Gotsmanov who made about thirty appearances between them in Saints colours – but I am happy to be corrected, the former is now a Scout for Shakhtar Donetsk apparently. From Wiltshire to Whippingham and a Club it is always a pleasure to visit – EAST COWES VICS. The first time I made the lengthy trek from the Red Jet Terminal to Beatrice Road was in January 1995 when Andover took the points in a Wessex League fixture courtesy of a three one victory and there have been numerous visits since. Nice place, nice people. FAWLEY AFC entered my records following a journey to the Waterside in October 2009 when Whitchurch advanced in the League Cup with a two-goal victory. The only memory from the game was the closeness between the colour of the referee’s kit and that of the home side. From one side of Southampton to the other and FOLLAND SPORTS. The Club has over the years undergone a number of name changes but when first visited in 1987 they bore the same name as now and lost by single goal to Petersfield in the Hampshire Senior Cup. Throughout all the changes they have remained a well-run and happy Club and it was nice recently to bump into a very fit looking Danny Bowers who did so much for the Club over the years. Re-trace the journey back across the City and Fawley’s near neighbours HYTHE & DIBDEN. The first venture to the delightful village was in November 2008 when Amesbury were beaten four nil in a Wessex One clash. It was a reverse score line in March 2015 when locating the current ground and seeing Cowes head back to

the island with a four-nil victory to their credit. Another Club that ranks highly in the welcome and hospitality stakes. The delightfully rural setting of LAVERSTOCK & FORD, despite its closeness to Salisbury, was encountered in September 2005 when QK Southampton conceded five goals in a Wessex Division Three fixture. In the League re-organisation, a couple of years later the Clubs went their separate ways and the Wiltshire side will not want reminding that when they met again in the Russell-Cotes Cup some six seasons later the Southampton side returned home with a seven-goal victory to their name. Back to the 1990’s for the initial trip to Fawcetts Field and NEW MILTON TOWN though it was Lymington and New Milton who were the home side for a midweek FA Cup replay. The opposition were Sheppey United – the Competition was not so ridiculously regionalised as it is now – and it was the Kent side who progressed by the odd goal in 3. Their round trip of 300 miles made mine, a third of the distance, rather irrelevant. Back to the Island and two trips to NEWPORT in the space of eighteen months. In the inaugural season of the Wessex League in April 1987 Road Sea won two nil at Church Litten whilst at St. Georges Park in November the following year the “Port” lost two one to Camberley Town in the FA Vase. A smashing Ground and set-up and it is sad that it is to be no more. PEWSEY VALE have re-joined the league for the coming season but when I went there in December 1999, they were in the Screwfix Western League Division One. They had just sacked their manager, Don Rogers, who played about half a million times for Swindon Town, and on the night were beaten four one by Exmouth – another long journey for a midweek evening. Some years later I saw a League match between Pewsey and Amesbury on one of the coldest nights I can remember watching football. From deepest Wiltshire to the far side of Hampshire and PETERSFIELD TOWN. When living in Godalming it was an easy and enjoyable destination for midweek matches starting in 1986 with a Vauxhall-Opel (now Isthmian [nee Ryman]) League match with Horsham. Plenty of goals as well with the visitors winning seven two and in the subsequent years there have been in excess of fifty further trips to Love Lane and it is a safe bet to say that Mark Nicoll was at every one of those matches. RINGWOOD Town were visited soon after my return to Hampshire in July 1998 for a pre-season friendly with AFC Bournemouth in July 1998 and two things recalled from the day. I asked a taxi driver in the Town if I could walk to the Ground -the reply was “not if you want to get there to see the match”- and whilst I cannot remember the figure the admission fee was far in excess of the norm at the time – and Bournemouth won 7-0. ROMSEY TOWN was another Club initially visited in the inaugural season of the Wessex League -January 1987 to be precise – when Road Sea scored four times without reply. The total visits are now approaching fifty and the Club has made immense progress both on and off the field over recent years. Two mentions for TOTTON & ELING with a visit to the old BAT ground in March 1990, when Newport won three nil in the League Cup, and twenty years later in October 2010 with the points shared in a one all Premier Division draw with Bournemouth at Testwood Park. UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH also comes in to my “difficult to find category” and when I first came across Burnaby Road in 1987 Portsmouth Royal Navy were the home side with Road Sea winning three one in the Wessex League. Back across Hampshire to Dorset and the pleasant surroundings of Potterne Park and VERWOOD TOWN. October 2011 and a three one win over New Street was the first of a dozen or so pleasant visits. It seems only right that the travels finish at WHITCHURCH UNITED, in effect my hometown Club. I played for them around the time cross bars came in to being – the pitch then was at right angles to the present one - but the first visit recorded as a spectator was in November 1990 when Bass Alton were defeated four two in a Hampshire League fixture. The total visits are now in excess of one hundred and fifty with power to add. Again, my thanks to all.

We hear that Patrick Wilson -recently Manager with New Milton Town will be starting in a new job with the FA on The FA Elite Coach Menteeship Programme- and will get to work across all areas in the game and be a part of the coaching staff for the under 16 England squad. On behalf of the League may I extend our best wishes to him on his career path. Former Verwood Town midfield player Tom Whelan has signed for Yeovil Town, last season he was with former members Salisbury.

MATCH REPORT Roger Allen writes SALISBURY HOSPITALS CUP FINAL [2018/19] BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS 13-0 SALISBURY As the saying goes you can only play the team that the opposition put out and so it was that Bemerton enjoyed a somewhat bloodless victory over a team of Salisbury youngsters who were no match for a strong, experienced Bemerton side. It was also a personal triumph for the experienced striker, Justin Bennett [pictured right], who showed all his predatory instincts in personally notching eight goals. One of Salisbury’s ex-players, Kane O’Keefe, was forced to retire early with a calf injury, and it was during the time before a substitution could be made that Bemerton notched the first goal on 7 minutes. Sean Wain floated a ball into the space behind the Salisbury defence and BENNETT pounced. Two minutes later Dan Finnigan had a goal disallowed for offside but on ten minutes it was two as the Salisbury keeper came to collect, failed and BENNETT headed home. The Salisbury keeper then made two smart saves from Ben White and Bennett denying the latter a hat trick. But on 16 minutes it was three as Adam PEARSON scored with a towering header from a Jake Rawkins corner. Salisbury were obviously coached to play out with short passes from the back but their team was simply out-muscled by the strong Bemerton midfield. Pretty football is all very well but it is useless without any end product. The last moments of the first half were notable for three events. Firstly a moment of madness by Pearson in

making a reckless tackle from behind which was punished with a yellow card that could so easily have been one of a different colour. Secondly Dan Kempson in the Harlequins’ goal was called on to make his only save of the night in smothering a shot by the Salisbury No7 (sorry no programme or team sheet). Finally BENNETT was set up by Finnigan to run home his hat trick goal. HT 4-0 The second half was simply a procession of goals. On 51 minutes PEARSON scored his second with a header from a Rawkins free kick. Then on 56 minutes it was six as BENNETT scored his fourth goal. Just before the hour WHITE scored from a Rawkins’ corner then

BENNETT scored again with a delicate chip after being set up by Finnigan. On 71 minutes it was BENNETT again as he was set up by a right wing cross from Ryan Lewis and on 80 minutes it was BENNETT again with a typical close range effort. To add insult to injury James LIGHTFOOT was tripped in the area and he stepped up to dispatch the penalty. With three minutes to go BENNETT completed his personal scoring with his eighth and there was just time for LEWIS to complete the scoring. FT 13-0 This game was held over from last season and the date had been in the diary for at least three months. That Salisbury chose to take a first team friendly against Eastleigh on the same night showed disrespect to a decent crowd, a charity competition and their opponents. It was perhaps poetic justice that their first team were also thrashed in the other game. For Bemerton – they are obviously going to be a force to be reckoned with as they attempt to regain their Premier Division status. An interesting season awaits in Division One as several teams have strengthened up in advance of the coming campaign.

IDEAS TO INCREASE ATTENDANCE AT YOUR CLUB ON NON-LEAGUE DAY

• Offer free entry or ‘pay what you want’ for all supporters. There have been some phenomenal crowds recorded using these incentives with reciprocal revenue generated through increased purchases of food, drink and merchandise.

• Offer discounts for season ticket holders of Premier League and Championship Clubs

• Issue a gift to supporters on arrival.

• Discuss moving KO times with leagues and/or nearby clubs, to maximise potential attendance. This is particularly relevant in areas with a high concentration of non-League clubs.

• Offer discounts or free entry to armed forces and emergency services

• Speak to youth teams about being mascots. Twenty two mascots leading both teams out will encourage parents to attend and build relationships

• Organise a “community day” with free coaching, penalty shootout competitions, inflatables and raffles etc.

• Run a Twitter campaign to promote your match. For example, #Target500 if you are trying to attract 500 supporters.

• Try and contact any local celebrities or special guests (Mayor, MP etc) who live in the area who may like to be a guest for the day.

• Incorporate a fund raising initiative. There may be a local cause or charity for which you would like to raise money, thus galvanising community interest

• Ensure the local press are kept abreast of plans and get them to run articles in advance

• Organise a supporters’ match before the game, or run a half time penalty shootout competition

• Run a 5-a-side tournament and invite local teams, newspapers and businesses to play.

• Advertise the event in your local area through posters and fliers

• Run special offers in the bar (e.g. discount drink offers)

• Enter a Non-League Day note on the fixtures in your programme / website to make it look more official

• Use contacts at Premier League and Football League clubs to promote your match through their media channels.

• Issue a commemorative match day programme. This could include submissions from supporters and staff; and is a perfect opportunity to showcase the history of the club and what it has to offer.

• Offer a pickup service on the day for elderly or infirm supporters.

• Even if your team isn’t at home on Non-League Day, there are still offers you can put in place to embrace the occasion. For example, you might be able to offer free or subsidised travel if your club is playing away. Part of the supporter experience is watching a club play home and away, so these factors could be taken into consideration.

Clubs are advised of this seasons Non-League

Day. Being promoted for 12 October, there’s

plenty of time to think out some ideas and

promote it locally. See below for a list of

some ideas you may wish to consider?

AFC STONEHAM- GROUND MOVE

AFC Stoneham will be moving to the new Stoneham Lane complex during September and the League has received the following communication from the club regarding entry to the complex: AFC Stoneham will shortly after the start of the 2019-20 season be moving to our new facility. Our first handful of games in both leagues will be at our current ground at The HP Arena. The following is taken from the Hampshire FA Website. Hampshire FA is proud to announce that they have been appointed as operators of the £9 million Stoneham Lane Football Complex facility, due to open in Autumn 2019. They are part of the Parklife Project which is an FA initiative to ensure the income generated at the football clubs is put back into funding grassroots football within the local area. In order to enter the facility, ALL users will need to register beforehand." By 'ALL users' they mean anyone who wishes to enter the ground, manager, coach, players, parent, spectator. Everyone who attends your away game at the facility will have to register first. By sharing this now, rather than dropping it in the form of a match day notification 7 days before a game, clubs are advised that it is quick and easy and can be completed at any time. http://www.hampshirefa.com/news/2019/jun/18/register-to-use-stoneham-lane-football-complex

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS

THE SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE 2019/20

Season 2019/20 will be the 33rd season of Wessex League Football and 1986/87, when it all started with Bashley as Champions – they also topped the table in the following two seasons – seems a long time ago now. The Premier Division came in to being in 2006/07 with AFC Totton the Champions and they and Sholing have won it twice with Poole Town taking the crown on three occasions. Perhaps surprisingly the First Division, over the same period, has never been won by the same Club twice. So, what of season 2019/20? With the FA re-organisation still in place we were forced again to have only two promotion and relegation places between the two Divisions other than the preferred three, but compared to some Leagues the changes caused by the aforementioned re-organisation have been minimal and this year to the better as the addition of one Club means twenty Clubs in each Division, making life easier for all, especially the Fixtures Secretary. Sholing of course were runaway winners of the Premier Division last season and return to the Southern League with trips to Brockenhurst and Bournemouth giving way to safaris to Barnstaple and Bideford. We wish them well and they will no doubt take heart from the performance at the higher level of Blackfield & Langley who carried all before them in their in their initial season following promotion. Replacing Sholing in the Premier Division are Fleet Town who were relegated from the Southern League and will be commencing their third spell as a Wessex League Club, having previously featured from 1989 to 1995 and 2000 to 2002. We bid them a warm welcome. The two up/two down “internal” relegation saw Amesbury and AFC Stoneham come up to the Premier and Andover New Street and Bemerton Heath relegated to Division One, the latter for the first time in their history. Amesbury return to the Premier Division at the first attempt and will be looking to draw on their experiences from their earlier spell at the higher level but for AFC Stoneham it will be pastures new and they follow Hamble Club and Baffins Milton Rovers in taking very little time from joining the League to taking a place at the top table so to speak. With a new ground soon to be unveiled as well, they face an interesting season. In Division One Andover New Street return after one season at the top and will be looking to regain Premier status as will Bemerton who already look to have strengthened their squad and backroom for a promotion push. The “new” team increasing the number in the Division to twenty is Pewsey Vale, “new” in inverted commas because this will be their second spell having been in Division One from 2010 to 2017 before returning to the Hellenic League from whence they came. The Club’s problem is something they can do little about - it is simply that the geographical location of Pewsey puts them on the fringe of the Western and Hellenic Leagues as well as the Wessex meaning they will always face the possibility of more travel than most. Hopefully to their advantage is the fact that they will have more fixtures this season than in the Hellenic League Division One West which only had thirteen Clubs. We welcome them back and wish them well. Clubs from both Divisions will participate in the League Cup which has been in being as long as the League, though was not held in season 2000/2001 when continuing “monsoons” meant it was a struggle to even get the league fixtures completed. The Trophy is currently in the possession of Baffins Milton Rovers who will start their bid to retain same with a 2nd Round trip to Bashley. The two new Clubs both face away fixtures with Premier League opposition – Pewsey Vale to Hamble Club and Fleet with the longest possible journey to Portland. We have a number of new Secretaries this year and we wish them well – never be afraid to ask – and we thank again our Sponsors, Sydenhams, for helping to make it all possible. Good luck to all and enjoy the season.
