LEAGUE NEWS

League Match Assistants Kat Carver and Ffion Eade have been appointed to the FA Girls Youth Cup Semi-Final between Southampton and Leicester City, which is scheduled to be played on 1 February at the Staplewood ground. The other Semi Final is between Chelsea and Everton. Both officials have impressed in the middle on Hampshire Premier League fixtures and we would like to congratulate them on this prestigious appointment. It’s that time of year when Rule Changes are brought forward- so if any club has a particular rule they would like to potentially see changed for next season, can you please email the League Secretary no later than 31st January 2020. We have been advised that Ted Walters cremation will be 14:00 on the 5th February at Bassett Green East Chapel Southampton. Family flowers only but donations if desired can be made to "Breathing Matters" (a UCLH Charity), and afterwards at Eastleigh Football Club. The Board have discussed the situation where a number of clubs have been asked to provide the League with the required floodlight certificate within a specified time but have failed to do so. A decision has therefore been made that all home Saturday games involving those clubs up to the end of February will kick off at 14:00. All midweek games involving those clubs will be reversed at no expense to the hosting club. Once the required certificate has been provided (possibly in the meantime), the kick offs and venues will revert to the normal times. In the short term this will have the following effect: SATURDAY JANUARY 25th Brockenhurst v Horndean will kick off at 14:00. Folland Sports v Downton will kick off at 14:00. TUESDAY JANUARY 28th Bournemouth v Bashley will be played at Bashley will kick off at 19:45. SATURDAY FEBRUARY 1st Bournemouth v Cowes Sports will kick off at 14:00. Folland Sports v Alton will kick off at 14:00.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 30

GOING TO WARMINSTER

The last in our series of looking back at Clubs that have graced the Sydenhams League in recent years before moving to other pastures takes us to Warminster Town. The Wiltshire Club was formed in 1885 and played in the Wiltshire County league until 1923 when they joined the Western League for the first time. Following the Second World War they had two further spells in the Wiltshire League interrupted by one in the Western League before joining the latter again in 1983/84. There they stayed until the end of season 2001/02 when relegation saw them return again to the Wiltshire League which at that time contained Clubs such as Stratton Crosslink and Chiseldon Castrol. Both totally unknown to the writer and rather reminiscent of perhaps a Railway Station and Filling Station. Third place in 2005-06 behind Corsham Town Reserves and Westside (the latter also outside the writer’s limited knowledge) saw them apply for and gain acceptance to join our league for the first time. In that first season they finished in a creditable 8th place behind the champions Hayling United in what was then known as Division One - it was the first year of the Premier Division - ahead of such as Blackfield & Langley and Petersfield who have since aspired to higher levels. They finished 7th and 5th in the following two seasons but then fell away to 12th and 14th places before finishing 16th out of eighteen in 2011/12 which was to be their final season in the League. Their overall record over those six seasons reads:-

PL W D L F A Pts 226 94 46 86 444 390 328

Their manner of leaving the League was not straightforward in that they virtually presented the League with a fait accompli having negotiated with the FA without any recourse to ourselves. They did not like the travel to the Island, this was firmly expressed- but there was also a suggestion at the time that the move was engineered solely by the Secretary rather than the club as a whole, but as stated, that was just a suggestion. The Club’s Ground in Weymouth Street was greatly re-developed in 1994 and they did play in the past, though when is beyond my finding, at Holly Lodge in Boreham Road should anyone be acquainted with the area. In the two major Cup Competitions they have never gone past the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup since World War 2, but have this season enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Vase by reaching the Fourth Round. Given that most Leagues have adopted the notion of a Premier Division over recent seasons it is difficult to completely ascertain but it is possible that in all their time in the Western League they may only have played in the Top Division when the League was reduced to one Division. In 2017/18 they finished bottom of Division One and should have returned to the Wiltshire League but were reprieved by the FA re-structuring and perhaps justified same by finishing in sixth place the following season. As this is written they sit comfortably in mid-table and we wish them well.

PROMOTION AND RELEGATION FROM STEP 5 AT THE END OF THIS SEASON This is how it will work: The 14 step 5 champions will all be promoted (14), then the second and third placed teams in the North West Counties League, Northern League and Northern Counties East League will all be promoted; making a total of 20. The four best by points per game second placed teams from the other step 5 divisions will also be promoted; making a total of 24. The remaining seven second placed clubs will play off against one of the seven clubs that finished bottom of a step 4 league in a winner takes all one off game. Relegation from Step 5 at the end of the season, will see the clubs finishing at the bottom of each Step 5 Division being ranked on a points per game basis and the 12 lowest will be relegated to Step 6. This effectively means that two Step 5 teams will escape relegation. This item is on the Agenda for 6 February.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes LYMINGTON TOWN 1-2 BROCKENHURST BROCKENHURST edged past local rivals Lymington Town to reach the final of the Bournemouth Senior Cup after a dominant second half performance but it took a spectacular goal by Toby Bailey in the first minute of stoppage time to secure the victory. The home side got off to the best possible start with a goal in the 2nd minute. Following his hat trick last Saturday, Sam HOUSE ran onto a through ball and slip it past Jon Webb in the Brock goal. Apart from the goal, Lymington had started the better and shortly after Mickey Finch had a low shot saved by Webb at the expense of a corner. Now the game settled into a midfield battle. As befits a local derby, there was the occasional flashpoint but neither side was able to gain the ascendancy. Around 10 minutes before the half Brockenhurst were adamant they should have been awarded a penalty when Will Tickle was brought down but their claims fell on deaf ears. At the other end Nathan Hurst had a similar penalty shout but this looked much less valid than the Brockenhurst one. Finally in the half there was a shot by Lymington's Harry Yates that just cleared the cross bar. HT 1-0 After half time Brockenhurst began to assert themselves and James Shorey fired just over with an early chance. On the hour Brockenhurst got a deserved equaliser. Tickle embarked on a trademark run from the right touch line but looked to be in a tight spot on the goal line. However he wriggled free and delivered a pinpoint cross to the onrushing Mitchell SPEECHLEY-PRICE who scored with a first time shot. Both sides exchanged chances, the best of which fell to Dom Falco, who was on in place of House. The Lymington striker had only Webb to beat but the keeper saved with his feet. On 82 minutes Brock had a golden chance to take the lead. A free kick by Tom Sykes clattered against the cross bar and back into play but in the ensuing scramble Dylan Manufor was brought down for a penalty. The kick was taken by Jude Nwachukwu and was high and wide to keeper, Ross Casey's left. The keeper stretched to get a full hand to the ball and deflect it over the bar for a fine save. It now looked as though the game would go to penalties but in the 91st minute Brockenhurst were awarded a free kick out on the right touch line. Tickle's kick was headed clear to Toby BAILEY who lined up a shot from fully 25 yards. On its way into the net it took a slight deflection but this should not take any shine off a goal that was worthy of winning any game, let alone a semi-final. FT 1-2

Mike Robins writes HAMWORTHY UNITED 1-2 DOWNTON DESERVED victory for the Robins on the night. On a bitterly cold evening it was a very even contest in the early stages with the best of the chances falling to Cameron Munn who dallied at the edge of the box and the ball was swept away. A quick break saw Tom Moseley force a save from Hammers’ Ollie King at the Bridge End of the ground from Diego Romero’s delivery.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 30

To be fair the hosts had the best of the opening quarter but simply couldn’t convert possession into goals. So it was just against the run of play that MOSELEY put the visitors ahead on 21 minutes after King had only partially parried a shot from James Clarke and it fell nicely for the skipper to fire home from close range. It was all square on 31 minutes when a Fawzi SAADI free kick from some 35 yards flew high into the top corner with Ernie Osei perhaps just getting a light touch en route, and then he was called into action just on the stroke of the half when a deft chip shot by Ollie Davis from distance was just tipped to safety. HT 1-1 The second half was a very end to end keenly fought contest with chances for both sides, Downton were under early pressure and made an acrobatic save to keep it one apiece. Munn also came close to putting the hosts ahead. Meanwhile at the other end Romero and Moseley combined well before the latter shot wide with King beaten and just after the hour mark the Hammers had a big let off when a Romero header was just wide of the mark. It was perhaps not really much of a surprise when the second goal for Downton did come. Again a dead ball that was converted by Dan TELFER from a not dissimilar distance and position to that witnessed in the first half. It was around this time that Downton took off Marcus Savage and replaced him with Matt Steer, whose contribution was a Steer free kick from around 30 yards went just wide of King’s goal, although both sides pressed for more goals. An enjoyable evening given the cold. FT 1-2 It now appears that Downton played an ineligible player because Matt Steer had played for Hamworthy United in a previous round and the decision of the Bournemouth F.A. is awaited Gary Day writes BASHLEY 3-2 QK SOUTHAMPTON THIS Southampton Senior Cup clash eventually took place at Bashley following various attempts to play at both venues. It was a busy week for Bash, who’d exited from the Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday. They were obviously keen to progress in this one, as they put out a strong XI, fielding seven of the players that had started that game two days ago. Three divisions separated Bash from their visitors. Just five minutes in, Harry McGRATH was found by a Lewis Ross pass and did well to sprint past a defender, skip past QK keeper Brad Dolton and slot home. It was an early blow for QK but undeterred, they got forward as Dillon Smith’s effort from distance just missed the post. QK lost the ball in a dangerous area and it came to Billy Cooper who found the side netting whilst later, a move involving McGrath and Harry Morgan saw Conor Whiteley’s effort just go the wrong side of the post. A loose ball by Bash keeper Ollie Bull gave QK skipper Tom Whitemore a chance but his snapshot was wayward. QK were competing well and a Jamie Pearson cross bounced awkwardly for Charlie Eccleston in the middle who just failed to control the ball. Cooper forced Dolton to hold high but, with time up on the watch, Bash added a second goal. It was a lovely move too as Jamie Webber passed to Ross who then found Whiteley and his low cross from the left went to the back post where Harry Bunce slipped it inside to MORGAN to apply the finish. Bash therefore netted at either end of the half. HT 2-0 QK pulled a goal back as Bash defender Brad Strickland, under pressure from Tom Nichols near to the touchline, intended to play the ball to his keeper but it presented an open goal for WHITEMORE to score. Bash got forward with a well-controlled Webber volley being excellently blocked by Dolton. Back at the other end, Strickland made up for his earlier error by making a fine challenge to deflect a goal bound Pearson effort clear, following a well-constructed QK passing move. Bashley added a third goal on the hour, referee Harrison played a good advantage in the build-up and McGRATH finished well into the corner. Bash were now 3-1 in front and Dolton was called upon to keep out further chances for McGrath and Whiteley. QK kept battling on with Brad O’Sullivan firing wide but they scored shortly after when a neat Pearson flick diverted the ball past a defender and set up WHITEMORE to fire a firm shot into the net. Plenty of time remained and QK were giving it a go as O’Sullivan’s fierce effort forced Bull to make a fine save and keep his side’s narrow lead

intact. Some of the QK players were running on raw adrenaline late on as Brandon Smith, despite carrying a knock, kept going at the back to inspire his teammates, whilst the midfield players worked tirelessly. It almost paid off too as, in the 89th minute, a Joel Thompson volley from 20 yards forced a good low save from Bull to prevent it going to penalties. FT 3-2 It was a gallant and committed performance by the QK boys who should be proud of their team effort. They ran Bashley close, making it a harder game for them than they’d probably expected. A mention of Dolton who had a great game in the QK goal, which isn’t bad considering he usually plays outfield! Ultimately though, whilst QK undoubtedly took the plaudits it was Bash who claimed the quarter final place.

MIDWEEK ROUND UP

Six Division One matches scheduled for Tuesday but only four played as the weather changed its mode of attack causing the games between Petersfield and Alton and Bemerton Heath and Fawley to be postponed because of frozen pitches. In the four games that were played two of the top contenders for promotion strengthened their positions with emphatic wins. Hythe & Dibden defeated Follands by five goals to one in a game that was both delayed and marred by an injury to the visitors’ Mason Baptiste just before halftime and we wish him a speedy recovery. Callum Craft scored the consolation goal for the losers while two of the Hythe goals came from Fillip Terzidis. Andover New Street made it ten wins in their last ten matches in all competitions when scoring six without reply at New Milton in something of a baptism of fire for the home side’s new management team. Shane Lock led the way with two goals and Rafa Ramos scored for the third game in a row. In the other two games Newport continued their domination of their landlords with a 4-0 victory over East Cowes Vics. Joe Craig scored twice as “The Port” secured the double having won 6-1 in the earlier fixture between the two. The final game saw Romsey and Ringwood share two goals and the points with Harry Draycott scoring for the home and Ryan Hamm for Ringwood. The position at the top of the table is now even more congested with US Portsmouth, Hythe & Dibden and Downton a point ahead of Andover New Street and Alton. Games in four different Cup Competitions and as to be expected Verwood found Weymouth too strong in the Dorset Senior Cup Semi Final going down 5-0 at the Wessex Stadium, their task made harder by the venue being switched after two postponements at Potterne Park. In the Hampshire Senior Cup a Conor Whiteley penalty for Bashley could not prevent Eastleigh progressing with a 3-1 win while penalties were needed to decide the outcome of the Russell-Cotes tie at AFC Portchester. In the latest El Creekio derby goals from Dan Wooden for the home side and Josh Benfield for Fareham left the game tied at one all after ninety minutes but it was the visitors who triumphed in the penalty shoot-out 4-2. To complete the evening the finalists in this season’s Bournemouth Senior Cup were confirmed with both semi-finals ending with two one score lines. At the Sports ground Sam House put Lymington in front at the break but a Mitch Speechley Price equaliser and a late goal from Toby Bailey gave near neighbours and rivals Brockenhurst the place in the Final. At the County Ground there was a triumph for Division One over the Premier Division as Downton defeated Hamworthy United courtesy of goals from Dan Telfer and Tom Moseley with Fawzi Saadi replying for the home side. Two games on Wednesday with Premier Division leaders Alresford having to come from behind to beat Fleet Town at Arlebury Park. Jake Hammond gave the visitors the lead before the break but two second half goals from Liam Hibberd and Sam Tonks ensured Alresford the spoils and a six point lead over their title chasing rivals. In the other game Baffins Milton Rovers moved in to the last four of the Portsmouth Senior Cup with a four goal defeat of Hampshire Premier League side Paulsgrove, scoring twice in each half. We were pleased to hear that the injured Follands player was treated for concussion and after a scan all was declared well, Thanks to all involved in looking after him on the night.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes ROMSEY TOWN 1-5 UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH This game was almost over before it began with the home side only able to name 12 players, several players on a stag do and the usual goalkeeper preparing for his holidays. And so it proved with U.S. Portsmouth enjoying a commanding lead halfway through the first half. Even before they took the lead on 5 minutes. U.S. had already had a goal disallowed for offside. When the breakthrough came it was a move down the left with Declan Seiden squaring the ball for Andy TODD to score. On 9 minutes they doubled their lead again it came from the left with both Elliott Turnbull and Seiden involved but this time Harrison BIRMINGHAM was on hand to score. Shortly afterwards Turnbull "scored" with a header but this was disallowed for offside. On 16 minutes it was three as a James Franklyn shot was parried by Romsey keeper, Jake Powell, but TODD was on hand to grab his second goal. Within two minutes U.S. had made it four as FRANKLYN was on the end of a through ball from Josh Hazell. On 23 minutes four turned to five as SEIDEN was on the end of a through ball to score easily. At this stage Romsey were being completely dominated by a 5 man midfield and you feared for what the score might end up being. However on 33 minutes they launched their first real attack as Liam Magee had a shot charged down and Geoff Dunn was too high with the follow up. Before half time there was just time for Franklyn to hit the base of a post for U.S. and Kieran Hancock to earn a sin bin for a word or two out of turn. HT 1-5 The second half started in more even fashion though before the hour Todd had hit the side netting when well-placed and U.S. had had another offside goal disallowed. On 71 minutes Romsey got their reward for a much improved second half display when Indrit ELEZI rounded keeper Price and shot into an empty net before the covering defender could clear. With 10 minutes left U.S. were awarded a penalty when one of their substitutes was brought down but Todd failed with his kick; keeper Powell made a good save. For the home side Dunn had a free kick touched wide when Price made a good low save but at the other end Todd had another good chance to complete his hat trick but he scuffed his shot to allow Powell to make an easy save. All credit to Romsey for not caving in when five down after 23 minutes but their inconsistent form continues. For U.S. there will be tougher tests to come as their promotion push gathers pace. FT 1-5

John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 4-2 LAVERSTOCK & FORD MAKING it eleven wins in eleven matches, Andover New Street took their goal tally to twenty one in the last four games and maintained their place in the Division One promotion race but they were made to work very hard for the goals and the three points. Laverstock & Ford are never an easy side to beat and with a touch of a local derby to the proceedings it was an enjoyable and full blooded encounter from start to finish. Both goalkeepers were in action in the opening two minutes with the visitors’ Tom Roberts saving at full stretch from Luke Hooper and Street’s George Baxter, back between the posts after a long absence, saving

at Lewis Wykes’s feet. Baxter was quickly involved again when some neat play between Wykes and Jake Rawkins created a chance for Russell Jones with the keeper turning the shot away for a corner. Laverstock were quicker in to their stride though Roberts had to save at Shane Lock’s feet and Jazz Beavis was inches too high with a free kick. Given the attacking threat from both sides it was a little surprising that the half had reached its halfway point before the first goal which came from the penalty spot. Lock endeavoured to control the ball with his chest just inside the area, the defender’s foot was dangerously high, there were few complaints and Jaz BEAVIS stroked home the kick to put the home side in front. The goal was followed by a spell of New Street pressure with a Rafa Ramos header from a Matt Scott free kick landing on the roof of the net, an in-swinging corner well handled by Roberts and Jason Silver stopped by a well-timed last ditch tackle by Adam Bourner. Beavis collected the first caution of the afternoon and a well worked free kick gave Lock a chance but the shot was too high before, with all checking their watches for the half time tea, Laverstock bought the scores level. The ball was worked out to the left, there was an absence of home defenders, there was no flag and Jake RAWKINS coolly beat the advancing Baxter leaving both sides with all still to play for. HT 1-1 The second half started, unlike the first, with a goal in the opening minutes, the fourth minute to be precise. A Lock corner from the left was only partially cleared and Alex DOCKREE’s shot from the eighteen yard line found its way through a crowded area to put the home side back in front. Baxter went a long way out of his area to halt an attack while at the other end Hooper seemed to have the right to go for a loose ball with the keeper but was penalised and cautioned for the subsequent collision. The game was very much end to end and the first substitution saw the visitors add Graham Mankin’s experience to their ranks. Roberts held a Scott free kick after something of a juggling act before the New Street skipper was cautioned for a foul in the centre circle with most of the Laverstock side gathered round advising the referee as to his actions, Why must players do that – the referee had given the free kick! The home lead was not decisive but they looked to have made it that way with a third goal on thirty three minutes and a very well taken goal at that. Dockree’s long ball forward was superbly controlled on the turn by RAMOS and slotted past Roberts to maintain the striker’s record of scoring in every game in the Street colours to date. But the visitors were not done and as the game moved in to the final ten minutes Russell JONES demonstrated as to why he is so often on the scoresheet, cutting inside from the left and firing in a shot that Baxter reached but could not hold. Game on again. Sadly then came the only flashpoint of the afternoon which could have been better handled by all. Tyler Brockway’s challenge on Dockree was dangerous and a little wild, and worthy in most peoples’ eyes of a red card. The inevitable melee followed with the usual difficulty of deciding the difference between combatants and peacemakers. When it quickly settled down the three Officials held court following which Mankin and Ramos received yellow cards as punishment for the melee – it could have been any of fifteen players – and, extremely belatedly, Brockway received a yellow card for the challenge. On in to stoppage time – an amazing seven minutes – and with four of the seven gone Jason SILVER made the game safe with a shot that seemed to be misjudged by Roberts and crept just inside the post. A good win for New Street - needed on the day as all the sides around them won as well – but Laverstock’s performance left one wondering as to why they are not higher in the table. Ninety (seven) minutes well spent on a dull and dismal afternoon in terms of the weather. FT 4-2

ROB TEPPETT On a personal note I am saddened to report the passing of Rob Teppett. Rob was Assistant Manager, Coach and Player for St Margaretsbury Reserves, but also played for the first team in the Essex Senior League. Locally he played for Bournemouth, Laverstock & Ford, New Milton Town and Dorset Premier side Swanage Town & Herston amongst others in the early 2010s. It was appreciated that Fleet Town and New Milton held one minute silences ahead of their games yesterday, and that hopefully the Collection for MIND held at the latter was well supported. Mental Health issues are to the forefront in many places today, so please just call or get in touch with the person that might be struggling, because although they may have a smile of their face, they may be suffering inside. Our sincere condolences go out to Rob's family and friends on such a tragic loss of someone who was held in high regard by those who knew him.

Could we ask clubs to check that both of your SMS contacts received the prompt text yesterday afternoon and report back anywhere the initial text wasn’t received together with the mobile number involved.

Thanks. Still not a full programme played but we are getting there – only one match postponed this Saturday – and a day when results went mainly to form with the leading contenders in both Division largely maintaining their positions. In the Premier Division leaders Alresford made it four wins in a row with a three nil victory at Shaftesbury, two more goals for Ollie Dennett and a fourth straight loss for the home side, but second place AFC Stoneham show no signs of weakening in their chase for the title. A 5-1 win at Cowes – two goals for Scott Hills – was their ninth win in a row and the Island side’s position must be an ever increasing source of worry to all concerned. Horndean climbed in to third place with a 2-0 success at Brockenhurst – Harry Jackson and an own goal the difference between the sides – and Lymington continued their run with a similar scoreline at AFC Portchester thanks to goals from Sam House and Mickey Finch and a fourth straight win. Hamble club were the only side in the top five to lose on the day going down to two Harry Bunce goals at Bashley who once again had the highest attendance, though they were run close by both Fleet and Portland. Baffins Milton Rovers went down for the fourth game in five as Christchurch scored three without reply at Hurn Bridge – two for Max Whitlock - and Portland won for the first time in five, 2-0 at home to Tadley with Jamie Symes and Manny Roche on the mark. At the bottom end of the table Bournemouth continue to struggle with a sixth loss in their last seven as the improving Fleet Town came out on top 4-0 with Malachi Thomas claiming two, but no joy for Amesbury Town, They were 2-0 up at the break at Hamworthy before two goals from Eddie Hodge helped the home side to a 3-2 victory to hopefully briefly lighten matters behind the scenes at the County Ground. The final game in the Division was the day’s one postponement with Solent University missing out at home for the third consecutive Saturday and giving Fareham an afternoon off. The students still have nine home games to play with the weather forecast not looking too good for Monday. The Division One title race remains as close as before with four of the top five recording convincing wins on the day, Leaders US Portsmouth scored five times in the first half at Romsey -two goals for Andy Todd – with the home side notching a consolation after the break, whilst Hythe & Dibden surpassed that by beating Andover Town 8-2 on the Waterside. Owen Fee scored a hat trick with five players scoring once as the usually steadfast Andover defence crumbled under the onslaught. Downton won 3-0 at bottom Club Follands – the usual goal for Moseley – and Andover New Street triumphed 4-2 in a highly entertaining and competitive game against Laverstock & Ford at Foxcotte Park. The only side in the top five not to win were Alton who were held to a goalless draw at New Milton and the League would like to express its sincere condolences to all at New Milton with regard to the very sad news in the week. Both Bemerton and Newport recorded convincing wins in their efforts to get in amongst the promotion hopefuls with the Wiltshire side keeping up their impressive home record with a 5-2 win over Ringwood. Newport, in turn, won 4-1 at Fawley for their fifth win in six and pushed the home side towards the relegation zone. Verwood claimed a welcome home win, only their third of the season, with a best of three win over Whitchurch – Lee Vint on the scoresheet – and there was also a welcome win for East Cowes Vics with Harry Furness scoring the only goal of the game against Petersfield. Mention briefly of two games in the Southampton Senior Cup third round on Thursday that were too late for the midweek round up. Bashley beat Hampshire Premier side QK Southampton 3-2 and Lymington won 3-0 at Fawley with both the winning sides playing their second game in three days. So at the end of the day Alresford still lead the Premier Division by six points and US Portsmouth head a three way tie at the top of Division One. Little changed. And finally a plea again for ALL Clubs to report their goalscorers and attendances - too often it is the same ones that are missing.
